On our final morning in Israel, we visited the Jerusalem hostel where Tom stayed before travelling to Gaza. We were shown the bed he slept in, the table at which he ate. A poster of Tom was tacked to the wall beside posters of Rachel Corrie and Iain Hook: a 'martyrs' gallery'. But from what I had learned, Tom's outlook was far too curious, his scepticism too healthy for him to willingly sacrifice his life for a cause that wasn't his own.

Smith's journal recalls daring missions, such as when he produced a detailed sketch of an oak tree just six metres from enemy lines so engineers could produce an exact copy - with a built-in observation post - that was swapped for the real thing.
But it also describes more ordinary but moving tasks he was commissioned to undertake, including painting the names of fallen comrades on simple wooden crosses or scrubbing out German street names in northern France and replacing them with the French originals. The most remarkable aspect is that even in the heat of battle he produced work that was not merely functional but beautiful.
Before the war, Smith, from Walthamstow in east London, had a fledgling career as a commercial artist and enjoyed some success designing a poster advertising Crosse and Blackwell jam. At the age of 22 he enlisted as an infantryman. He hid his notebook and pencils in his leggings and kept an illustrated diary.

irstie Buchanan, the creative director of the agency s Manchester office, has told How-Do that the agency is desperately on the lookout for a wealth of talent (our recruitment ad rates are very reasonable Kirstie! Ed) due to new business wins and organic growth.
One way the agency is looking to bring in new faces is through an initiative it calls Monkey Nuts.
This sees a poster campaign appearing in several universities, online activity and beer mats being placed at a range of venues - all designed to encourage digi-savvy people to attend an evening at a Manchester drinking den.
The idea, says Buchanan, is that it will provide an opportunity for Reading Room s team to meet anyone looking for a career within the digital industry over an informal beer or two.
The evening is the third time Reading Room have held a Monkey Nuts event and will take place at some point in November (and will no doubt be a lot more expensive than a few recruitment ads on How-Do! Ed again).
Reading Room has recently picked up the accounts for Leeds University and Knowsley council

Apart from the manuscripts, the most telling lot in today's auction is a giant poster from a Brel appearance at the Carnegie Hall in New York in the 1960s.
Brel, who left Belgium as a young man to escape the disapproval of his wealthy, bourgeois family, is the most popular 'dead' singer in the French language. He still sells more than 200,000 albums a year, significantly more than Edith Piaf. Many of his foreign fans many of his French fans assume he is French.

The famous aviator was well known for buzzing the city when he flew into Kanawha Airport to visit his parents in Hamlin.
A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Bergdahl remained fascinated with Yeager's exploits, especially tales about his flight under the South Side Bridge.
He heard the rumors about the Air Force squashing the story. 'The Air Force became an independent force in 1947, the same year Yeager broke the sound barrier,' he said over the phone from his home in Denver. 'He was like their poster boy. If it came out in the paper that he flew under the bridge, he would have been demoted.'
Eight years ago, working in Minneapolis with an airline training program, Bergdahl attended the opening of a sports equipment center. 'I looked over and thought, 'Oh, my goodness. I think I recognize this guy.''

Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations vary by age, gender and level of activity. Men can consume more calories than women without gaining weight, and 20-year-olds more than 60-year-olds.
New York City's calorie-count regulation has paved the way for similar laws elsewhere. California last week became the first state to require restaurant chains to reveal how many calories are in their standard menu items.
Natalia Kaplan, of Queens, said she hadn't noticed the poster directly behind her on an E train featuring that 1,170-calorie burrito, but she approved of the campaign.
'It makes you aware,' said Kaplan, who said she pays close attention to the calorie information fast-food chains are now required to provide.
'If I go to Dunkin' Donuts, I look at the calories, and I try to take the least-calorie doughnut,' she said.

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 7 -- Alba Therapeutics Corporation presented results from two clinical studies this week at the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) 2008 Annual Scientific Meeting. Data from study CLIN 1001-004, the first Phase IIa trial conducted in celiac disease and the first to assess the prevention of immunologic changes in celiac disease, showed that larazotide acetate (AT-1001) successfully demonstrated prevention of gluten-induced immunologic changes in celiac patients.
Results from the study showed that larazotide acetate is the first pharmacologic agent to prevent changes in blood mononuclear cell populations (specifically T-reg cells and B Cells) and other markers of immunological change associated with active celiac disease. This data suggests that larazotide acetate offers potential as a future treatment of celiac disease. Results from a second poster presented at ACG showed that larazotide acetate also inhibited the effect of inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and interleukin (IL-4) on intestinal epithelial permeability, in vitro, further suggesting that the product offers potential as a future treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Larazotide Acetate is a novel, non-absorbed peptide currently being studied in Phase IIb trials for the treatment of celiac disease. Larazotide acetate has the potential to become the first approved medicine to treat celiac disease and has been granted 'Fast Track' designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this indication.

Results of FLEXX Trial Presented at the Osteoarthritis Research Society International's 2008 World Congress
PARSIPPANY, N.J., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Ferring Pharmaceuticals Inc. recently presented results from the FLEXX Trial of Osteoarthritis of the Knee, showing that EUFLEXXA(R) (1% sodium hyaluronate), a highly pure non-avian high molecular weight form of intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IA-HA), is superior to intra-articular saline (IA-saline) for the relief of pain in knee osteoarthritis (OA) at 26 weeks. The results of the trial of 586 patients were presented in a poster at the Osteoarthritis Research Society International 2008 World Congress in Rome, Italy. The study results clearly demonstrate that EUFLEXXA rapidly relieved the pain of knee osteoarthritis and that effect was sustained at the six-month period, said Dr. Roy D. Altman, MD, a FLEXX Trial investigator.
About the Study
In the 26-week randomized, saline-controlled, double-blind study, 586 patients were evaluated prior to and following three weekly intra-articular injections of IA-hyaluronan (n291) or buffered IA-saline (n295). The demographics of the hyaluronan group were: age 62.5 (plus or minus) 10.6, 63% women, BMI 32 (plus or minus) 7, Kellgren-Lawrence Grade 2-41%, Grade 3-59%, initial pain 56 (plus or minus) 22, with minimal differences in the IA-saline group

Someone write a script, if only because ET2 would look totally cool on a film poster.

The frozen pizza company will introduce a new logo and a packaging redesign to refresh its range.
It is also adding 11 new products to its three core sub brands, Goodfella's Deeply Delicious, Goodfella's Delicia and Goodfella's Solos, alongside improvements to existing recipes.
The marketing drive includes national poster ads and a double sponsorship of ITV shows 'You've Been Framed' and Harry Hill's TV Burp'.
The new brand positioning 'Devoted to pizza pleasure' is based on research which revealed that consumers want to buy pizza that has been created by pizza experts who really care about authenticity, taste and product quality.
Goodfella's aims to establish a clear identity for itself and to drive consumer reappraisal of the frozen pizza category.
Kevan Mallinder, Goodfella's head of UK marketing, said: 'This is a huge step for us and one which couldn't come at a better time when more consumers are buying into frozen as a result of the economic climate.
'By rebranding, and introducing new products, we aim to increase our brand differentiation and consumer relevance, and further appeal to our family orientated target audience.'

As if investing wasnt challenging enough, the basic investing strategies have risks of their own. Today, 2 of the 4 biggest banks in the country are literally suing each other for the right to buy the troubled Charlotte-based lender.In what already seems like ancient history, just weeks ago investors fretted over Wachovia's fate in the wake of Washington Mutual's dramatic collapse into the waiting arms of JPMorgan Chase (C) teamed up with the FDIC to save Wachovia from the abyss. Toting a federal backstop for its quickly eroding loan portfolio, Citi snatched up Wachovia's retail branches and various other operations for a mere $2.1 billion. The move was surprising: Citi has plenty of troubles of its own. Once the largest financial company in the world, Citi has become a poster child for mortgage and credit troubles - it didn't need to go out and buy any more.At the time, many puzzled over Wells Fargo's (WFC) reluctance to step into the fray, as Wachovia's footprint out East seemed a perfect fit with Wells' strong presence in the West.But then last Friday, in a stunning development, Wells stepped in with what appeared to be a far superior offer. Rather than dumping a chunk of Wachovia's risky loan portfolio on taxpayers via the FDIC, Wells not only upped the purchase price to $15 billion, but shunned government money to complete the transaction.You could almost hear the lawyers licking their chops for high drama in the New York courts.Citi claimed Wells had unfairly infringed on its right to buy Wachovia, that their agreement prevented other suitors from upping the ante.Wells, for its part, found a loophole, asserting that the newly minted bailout package -- just hours old -- contained a clause allowing it to make a legal counteroffer.Accusations flew, motions were filed, and judges, courts, attorneys and bankers dug in for a bloody fight.

A crucial difference between the NHL's European premiere and the 39th Game is that only four of the league's 30 teams are involved. And decent ones at that, the Swedish match-up being the equivalent of, say, Arsenal v Aston Villa.
The Penguins also brought Sidney 'Sid The Kid' Crosby with them, the league's current poster boy and equivalent of Cristiano Ronaldo. That he had a reasonably quiet game was by the by; he was here, he spoke to the media, and was generally the living, breathing embodiment of the glitz and glamour of the NHL game that no amount of live TV coverage could ever convey.
Quite how a game between the rather less successful - not to mention fashionable - Florida Panthers and the Nashville Predators would have gone down is another matter entirely.
And yet the NHL can get away with this because of the fundamental equanimity that exists at the heart of the game

Perhaps that's why the Guardian's ongoing series, Writers' Rooms, is so appealing. Here you discover that historian Antony Beevor hung a Soviet-era anti-drinking poster to remind himself 'not to touch a drink until dinner time.' That Kate Mosse, author of Sepulchre and Labyrinth, writes very early in the morning and uses her laptop for novels only -- 'no email, no journalism, no internet, no administration.' That Roald Dahl didn't want to have to get up from his chair so he created a lap desk and kept a sleeping bag near at hand for his legs should they get chilly. Dahl wouldn't let anyone into his writing 'shed'; he shut the curtains tight 'so that nothing from outside came in to interfere with the story that he was imagining.' Now that's a useful tip. Somebody pass the smelling salts! There's a new poster online for Twilight, with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson looking all loved up / vamped up (respectively). Click here to see the full Twilight poster.
The story concerns Stewart's Bella, a teen in love with Pattinson's Edward. Only problem is that he's a vampire, which can really put the brakes on a relationship - what with the whole age difference / well-nigh uncontrollable urge to drink your loved one's blood and all.
The keen eyed among you will notice that a) it's a lot like the poster that's already out there but also that b) Pattinson's Edward looks a lot more sinister this time (there's a hint of non-canonical red around his amber eyes here).

There may have been a Shamrock or two ahead of him on meet day through the past four fall seasons, even during the indoor and outdoor campaigns.There may have been Shamrocks with more natural foot-speed, with more of a fluid style, with faster times and prominent top 10 positions. But all Phipps has done is chisel 20-30 seconds off of his previous best times from year to year, become one of the Shamrocks' top three runners and consistently break from the pack at the big meets.

A MOTHER who battled skin cancer has criticised an advertising campaign detailing the health benefits of sunbeds.
The poster, saying 'Sunbed sessions ARE good for you' is produced by The Sunbed Association (TSA).
TSA promote good practice within the unregulated tanning industry, and say regular exposure to UV light is essential for the creation of vitamin D.
But skin cancer survivor Karen Hills said the poster may send out the wrong message, especially to children.
Karen, 40, of Dunholm Avenue, Middlesbrough, said: 'I don't think it's a very good message for young people, who are under pressure to look glamorous

Now Beamish Museum in County Durham has launched its Belgians in Birtley project at Birtley Library.
It is hoped that local people will become involved in helping to research Elisabethville - named after the Belgian queen - and its community from records at Beamish and in Gateshead Library.
The Beamish collections include archive photographs and objects such as the clogs which were worn by the Belgians, a Belgian policeman's cap and a poster from Sacriston in County Durham which was used to raise money for the refugees.
Helen Barker, collections officer at Beamish, said: 'The Belgian soldiers who came to Birtley were not fit for active service but they still wanted to do something for the war effort.
'Today we are not sure how many people in Birtley are aware of this village.'
It was administered by the Belgian authorities and run as a military establishment.
In addition to the housing there were three dining halls, a church, primary school, market, public laundries and baths, police station and a prison

This years poster
Michael Vollbracht designed this years Clearwater Jazz Festival poster.
Born in Quincy, Illinois, Vollbracht began his career in 1965 at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. He graduated in 1969, winning the Norman Norrell Award, the schools highest honor. The award was presented to Michael by Bill Blass and thus began a long and lasting friendship.
In 1969, Geoffrey Beene selected Vollbracht to become a member of his design team. In 1971, Donald Brooks hired him to work under his label as the designer for Boutique Donald Brooks. Afterwards, Vollbracht joined the elegant store Henri Bendel in 1973 as their in-house illustrator.
In 1975, Vollbracht began illustrating Bloomingdales stores advertisements

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- He may be the NHL's poster boy, but Sidney Crosby has nothing on teammate Jordan Staal if NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is in search of an endorsement for future season-opening games in Europe.
'As first road trips go, it was pretty cool,' Staal said of the Penguins' nine days in Stockholm, Sweden, for the NHL Premiere. 'I'll remember the scavenger hunt most. Seeing (Stockholm) from all those different places; who gets to do that?
'But the (Vassa Warship) museum - that was pretty good

Donald Sutherland deserves an Emmy for his Tripp Darling character. He really is that good. I loved how, after finding out that his son Patrick's (William Baldwin) wife was dead, he rushed over to his son's apartment and sat on the toilet in the bathroom, right next to the body, his legs crossed, completely diginified. That should be on a poster somewhere. And now that we've seen that everyone involved with the Darling family has something to hide and is somewhat disreputable, it'll be interesting to see if Nick can somehow slow his ongoing personal descent into evil as the Darling family lawyer, whether or not he'll cheat on his wife with Karen Darling, and it'll be interesting to see if Blair Underwood really does have Tripp's number. I think, at least by the end of the season, we'll see Underwood's Simon Elder and Sutherland's Tripp do serious financial battle

The idea of leeway, or discretion in the policy, did not sit well with Janet Griffin.
That's what I have the problem with is the discretion, there's nothing black and white in here, she said. What makes that historically significant? This is what we don't know, this is up to the discretion of the historic district commission, and we don't like that, Janet Griffin said.
Twin Gate is the poster child for the overlay district, according to the Griffins.
I'm sorry to bring up Twin Gate, I'm sure you are tired of hearing about it, but they are the only people that have come forward with anything, so that's why we bring it up, Dennis Griffin said.
Resident Marie Evans, another abutter to Twin Gate, echoed the comments of many other abutters concerned over what allowing commercial developments next door would do to their property value.
I really feel that commercial development could damage the only investment I have left after the last couple of weeks on the stock market, she said.
Residents Reed Clark, Hank Peterson and Al Baldasaro also spoke on the importance for the council to clearly define what commercial development would look like in the years ahead for Londonderry.
