A PCO's job is to talk with his neighbors about politics on a regular basis. Doing it independently, as described in the article, is probably more important, but being a PCO gives you useful structure and support. It also gives you an opening to actually knock on people's doors a couple of times a year and talk politics.

I personally want to wring the necks of most of the national Democrats, but a lot can be done locally.

Jana C.H.
Seattle
Saith Will Rogers: I don't belong to an organized political party' I'm a Democrat.Jana C.H.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16974426405568302762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5288939.post-81146999605538059382008-05-13T01:53:00.000-04:002008-05-13T01:53:00.000-04:00The solution is BOTH electing honest governement A...The solution is BOTH electing honest governement AND talking to our neighbors. What governmental regulation we have of plundering corporations, we want to keep. So sure don't stop voting or doing political activism. In fact, maybe we can do political activism with neighbors. From time to time, the common people realize that this is a lie, and a revolution occurs. The new regime may endure, but the knowledge does not last.

Consent of the governed is a fact.Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00296104831502728637noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5288939.post-59969464402540709792008-05-12T23:41:00.000-04:002008-05-12T23:41:00.000-04:00The government is not going to watch corporations ...The government is not going to watch corporations in our interests. The state was founded and is run in the interests of the capitalist class. It only regulates corporations in order to maintain capitalism, reconcile the conflicting interests between capitalists and capitalist institutions (like corporations), and to stave off working class movements that challenge capitalists for power.

Capitalists do change the rules of the governmental game at their whim. If they don't like the results of an election they're perfectly happy to kill the elected politician and massacre his/her movement. Simply look at Allende in Chile, The fascist overthrow of the Spanish repubic in the thirties, Iran in 1954, etc.

The bosses' government is not the only democracy in existence. Nor are they or their government the only bodies capable of exercising power. Working people are fully capable of forming their own democratic institutions. They are particularly strong in revolutionary moments, but exist in some form wherever a social movement develops.

We need to build these democratic institutions to the point where they can replace those created by the ruling class. When workers' democratic institutions acquire enough authority, they can win the military to their side and prevent the ruling class from continuing its rule. (we are the majority, after all)

For instance, the first Open Democratic assembly against the war in Iraq is going to be held this June 28-29th (Saturday, Sunday) in Cleveland, Ohio. It is the most critical opportunity in the coming months to build an anti-war movement capable of halting the war machine in its tracks. Representative government is the only structure in society that is set even attempts to provide an opportunity for the average guy to have a say. All imperfectly implemented, but governemtne regulations, laws, etc. are teh only thing that present any impediment to the rich and powerful buying and selling us like 18th Century Africans on the block.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5288939.post-7770257779755519882008-05-11T22:22:00.000-04:002008-05-11T22:22:00.000-04:00No wonder you libs are always so miserable.
