Well honestly, in a situation in which one to three people are shoved in a tight space, it's actually very helpful to rely on loft beds and bunk beds. They can definitely help you make the most of the tiny quarters you're forced to live in. Thanks to the varying degree of options in which they accommodate crowds: futon bunk beds, twin-over-twin, twin-over-full, and the less frequent twin-over-king and queen make these two choices ideal.

What Do You Do When Three's a Crowd?

Suppose you have three people sharing a small place rather than your typical two, and you need a space saving option for the three of you? Well, that's where triple loft beds come in. Loft beds are great for kids' rooms, dorm rooms and studio apartments where three people are basically living on top of each other and need an ideal living and sleeping arrangement that's space-conservative.

Triple loft beds are a way of combining two or three bunk-style beds into one single loft. They are typically arranged in an "L" shape (most likely placed in a corner) in which two beds are arranged up high and the third bed is built below. Some will also occasionally include a wardrobe. This is particularly helpful because you no longer have to disperse all of these items throughout your room. They're all in one location, which can save you a tremendous amount of space.

Two most notable space saving features are when a desk or set of drawers are built into the bed. Since both take up a lot of space independently on their own, you get to cheat a little and eliminate the need for a dresser that would've otherwise stolen a chunk of space in your room. And the desk that might've other eaten an entire wall up has pretty much given that wall back to you because it's built into the bed. You'll be able to fit additional things in a room that might've otherwise proven difficult.

What Do You Do When Two Beds are One Too Many?

Bunk beds are the traditional version of a loft bed, with a bunk on top and a bunk on the bottom. They used to be relatively common, but as the 80s became a thing of the past, bunk beds aren't quite as popular as they used to be. Today you'll find that bunk beds are still available, but they are not nearly as space-saving as loft beds or triple loft beds, due to the fact that they only accommodate for sleeping two people but don't really help you save space with additional furniture.

But that doesn't make them completely useless, right? Maybe all you really need is a way to fit two beds in a room that might've otherwise difficult with two separate beds. Well if that's the case, then you already know bunk beds are great for all tight spaces. Besides the usual living arrangement in dorms or studio apartments, they're great for single or two-child households.

With two children, they'll obviously be able to share one room. But with one child you might find them very useful if your child tends to have friends stay over frequently and you don't have a guest room. Idealistically, the second bed can then be used as a guest bed. And in the meantime your child can just have fun switching beds whenever (s)he is up for it.

So there's no question that loft beds, all-in-one loft beds, triple loft beds and bunk beds are all great ways of saving space in your kids' room, dorms and even studio apartments. The advantage of combining sleeping and work areas together leaves more room for other things and eliminates the need of having to squeeze everything into a small room crammed with too much stuff.

Times are tight nowadays, and if you're at all handy with tools, you may have considered building some furniture for your family. If you're thinking of choosing bunk beds as one of those plans, please make sure you take extra time to research the many different specifications and safety features needed in a bunk bed. You may think it's cheaper to build it yourself; it may not necessarily be so.

Of course, there are many skilled people out there who could accomplish this rather daunting task with no problem. There are others, who, perhaps after viewing one too many home-repair shows, now feel themselves fully qualified to do any type of construction involving assorted power tools. Bunk beds are different. There is nothing more important than the safety and security of your family, and bunk beds present multiple opportunities for catastrophic failure.
A good way to learn about bunk bed construction before you attempt it on your own is to help a friend put his bunk beds together. Usually, if you think about it, pre-packaged bunk beds come with the "plans" to build them. A space greater than three inches should not be tolerated.

Anyway, before you begin building your bunk bed, with your new plans that you have, build it in the actual room that the bunk beds will go in. Believe it or not, many people start projects without accurately measuring the room into which their project will go. You will need more things than I can tell you in this short article. The plans will tell you the right drill bits, nuts and bolts to use. It will also be your choice so far as which wood to use, but oak is always a good choice. Go with your preference, and what you're used to working with.

Another word about safety, as you finish up your bunk bed: the distance in-between your bed frame and your mattress must not gap by more than three inches, or your children will be in danger of strangulation. PLEASE make sure you measure this accurately, and that your bed and mattress fit snugly.

And even before your children start clamoring over who gets to sleep in the top bunk, take a few minutes and go over the safety features of your new bunk beds. We recommend not allowing children under the age of six to sleep in the upper bunk. The access to the upper bunk is also important. Please take a moment to teach your kids how to safely use the ladder of the bed. Also, consider using a children's night light. The extra light provides additional security, both for the child, and for you.

For centuries the bed has been one of the most important items of furniture in a household.

Beds are a status symbol: the Tudor royals and noblemen showed off their wealth through their huge four-poster beds and elaborate drapes and hangings, and many people today covet a spacious and beautifully designed bed in their home.

The difference in the quality and comfort of beds has always separated rich from poor and continues to do so. While some of us enjoy the luxury of fine Egyptian cotton sheets, others around the world still prepare for the night by rolling out a simple sleeping mat.

Beds in the ancient world

The earliest beds were little more than piles of straw or other natural materials to ease the discomfort of lying on a bare, cold floor. An important change occurred when beds were first raised off the ground to protect the sleeper from draughts, dirt, and pests.

More than 3,600 years ago, the Persians filled goatskins with water to create the first water beds. In ancient Egypt, beds were made from wood and reed matting, and the bed functioned as a place to eat and entertain socially as well as to sleep.

In Homer's Odyssey, the bed of Odysseus is described as being made of woven rope, while the ancient Romans had a variety of beds for different purposes. These included the lectus cubicularis, or chamber bed for sleeping, the lectus discubitorius, or table bed, on which up to three people would lie to eat, and the lectus funebris, on which the dead were carried to the pyre. In most ancient societies, however, only the rich would have enjoyed the luxury of sleeping in a bed.

Beds in the Middle Ages

In Saxon England, a bed typically consisted of a mattress on wooden boards, covered with quilts and fur rugs. In the later Saxon period, some beds were raised wooden platforms. Again, it was only the rich who slept in beds; everyone else spent the night on the floor huddled around the fire in the great hall. The 13th century saw the arrival of the canopy or tester, which was suspended by cords from beams above the bed. Curtains were hung on it to block out draughts and light. Gradually bed covers became more elaborate, often incorporating gold cloth and decorative fringes. In the early 14th century, feather beds imported from France became popular in English homes. In the wealthiest households a feather bed was placed onto the matted truss (mattress) of straw, with a layer of canvas in between.

The woollen blanket also appeared around this time. The great four-poster bed was first introduced in the 15th century, probably from Austria. These beds were typically enormous with huge intricately carved pillars up to 18 inches in diameter carrying the vast weight of the wooden panelled tester. Carvings on the bed included the family coat of arms, monsters, griffins, Cupids, and knights, and drapes and tapestries were heavily embroidered in splendid colours and exotic designs. When lords travelled between manors, they frequently took their beds with them. Portable beds were known as 'trussing' beds and the hangings were referred to as 'the portable chamber.' In 1600, the bed in a poor household would consist of a timber frame with rope or leather supports. The mattress was a bag of soft filling, usually straw or sometimes wool. However, a tradesman might have several feather beds in his house, often with an elaborately carved back and posts.

The origins of the modern bed

By the mid 18th century, a greater range of materials for bedding had become available. Quality linen or cotton was used for covers, while coconut fibre, cotton, wool and horsehair filled mattresses and pillows. By the late 19th century, iron and steel frames had largely replaced the traditional timber bed.

In 1873, Sir James Paget at St Bartholomew's Hospital first used a waterbed to treat and prevent pressure sores. The water-filled mattress allowed pressure to be evenly distributed over the body. By 1895 a few waterbeds were sold by Harrod's via mail order. But due to a lack of suitable materials, the waterbed did not gain widespread popularity until vinyl was developed in the 1960s.

In 1900, American William Lawrence Murphy invented the space-saving 'Murphy Bed', which folded up into a closet. 1929 saw the arrival of expensive latex rubber mattresses, and at around the same time pocket spring mattresses were introduced. These consisted of individual springs sewn into linked fabric bags.

The pocket sprung mattress is still sold worldwide today, though new technology has enabled alternatives to be developed such as the memory foam mattress, which moulds perfectly to the shape of your body and ensures a great night's sleep.

From an aesthetic perspective, beds made from natural materials such as pine have enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity.

By allowing some pieces of orange peel to dry, you can mix them with small pinches of sweet spices, such as cinnamon, ginger, and allspice, to make a potpourri. Once it's mixed, set it in your room in an open bowl for a truly lovely aroma. In the summer, you can always add flowers to your room. If you don't grow your own, look for wild daisies and roses which will smell wonderful.

Ever since I was a child, I have adored canopy beds. Growing up, my parents had a great wrought iron bed that I still think of with great fondness. You could go contemporary with styled art, or you could go traditional with flowers and patterns. Remember...traditional is full of color and patterns and modern is a smooth solid color feel.

Be Bold- You like to make statements? Well be bold in your design with vibrant color and many patterns. Have fun with all your decorating. Try bold, matching black and white patterns for the bedspread, wall paper, etc and off set these with vibrant colorful accessories. It will definitely make a statement.

Class and a Wooden Bed Frame- Add some class to your wood toned bed frame. Get a tan bedspread to offset the dark wood. Use dark throw pillow covers. Make sure to have a good combination of light and dark varying shades of brown and tan. Don't go with black or white...these will not match your wooden bed frame.

The important thing to remember is that you should decorate how YOU want to. In the end this is your bedroom and you are the one who has to live in it, so you may as well love it. Good luck!

In 1988, sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski discovered that trading in your old bed for a new, more comfortable one could give you an average of 42 minutes extra sleep -four times as effective as a typical over-the-counter sleep remedy. So if you're feeling cramped in your sleeping space, or you're tossing and turning on an uncomfortable mattress, one of the most important things you can do for your health is to invest in a new bed.

Choosing a bed for a tall person

According to the Sleep Council, most of us are sleeping in a bed that's too small. 75 % of double beds sold are still the standard size: 4' 6" x 6' 3" (135 x 190cm), yet men and women in the UK are getting taller. Each generation is on average 0.75 inches taller than the last, which means that within the next 50 years, the average man is likely to be 6 foot tall. The Sleep Council recommends that since we don't sleep with our heads right up against the head board, we should choose a bed that's at least 6in (15cm) taller than the tallest person sleeping in it. If you or your partner are above average height, even upgrading to a 5' x 6' 6" (150 x 200cm) king size could make a dramatic difference to your night's sleep while taking up very little extra space in your bedroom. And at 6' x 6' 6" (180 x 200cm), a super king size should give most tall people the extra length they need. If you're very tall, an alternative is to consider a custom made bed. While this will be more expensive, the advantage is that the bed can be designed to your exact specifications to suit you and your home.

Choosing a mattress for a heavy person

If you or your partner is heavy, a standard double bed probably won't be wide enough for you to sleep comfortably without disturbing each other. Like tall people, you'll benefit from a king- or super king-sized bed to give you that extra room. However, a further difficulty for heavier people is that when you sleep on a conventional innerspring, air, or foam mattress, your body weight pulls you down. As the compressed air or springs push back, your skin and blood vessels are squeezed between the force of your weight and the upwards force of the mattress. This causes pressure points, which constrict circulation in areas like the shoulder blades, buttocks, head, heels, hips or elbows. Pressure points can result in numbness, stiffness and pain and lead to a restless and unsatisfying night's sleep. The heavier you are, the more likely this is to be a problem. An overweight person needs a firm and supportive mattress made of a higher density material such as memory foam to relieve pressure and ensure restful sleep. Memory foam, or visco-elastic foam, was originally developed by NASA to ease the pressure of extreme G-force on astronauts. A memory foam mattress can reduce your need to toss and turn during the night by up to 80 %, resulting in a much deeper, more restful sleep. It is also very durable and will continue to provide comfort and support for around 15 years.

When choosing a new bed or mattress, make sure both you and your partner visit the showroom together. Don't be afraid to try out a number of beds by lying on them to find the one that's most comfortable. It's worth investing time into finding the right bed, as a good night's sleep makes so much difference to your health and well-being. Remember that the level of firmness or softness that suits you best is a personal choice, so never let a salesman talk you into buying anything that doesn't feel right. Once you've got your ideal bed, make sure your bedding and bed linen fit perfectly too. If your covers are too large for your bed, they can easily slip and slide off. If they're too small, they won't cover you properly and you'll wake up cold.
