From photogram to silk-screened X-ray to pigmented ink, these works offer a new perspective of the power and vulnerability inherent in nature and in us.

Amanda Means works without a camera, placing the plants themselves in an enlarger and exposing their forms to photographic paper below. The result is a negative image; an intimate, luminous explosion of petals blanched white against a rich blackness. The densest parts of the flowers shine with almost unearthly glamour and the size of the prints accentuate their sensual elegance.

Steve Miller's images are from his recent series, "Health of the Planet." Miller traveled to Brazil and worked with a local hospital to create these high-quality digital X-rays of Amazon plants. Ghostly in their translucent, X-rayed form, the plants are caught like patients under the scrutinizing eye of the X-ray, while bold splashes of opaque, silk-screened paint alternately obscure, tussle with, and highlight their delicacy. The images, carbon prints and acrylic on canvas, marry the organic to the technical and ask the viewer to diagnose both his own state and that of the earth.

Inspired by 18th and 19th century botanical prints, Gary Schneider creates his intimate table-top still-lifes through durational exposure, sweeping a flashlight over plant contours and capturing the images in pigmented ink. Figs, leaves, chestnuts, and roses well voluminously up out of the darkness. They hover above the viewer with a dense, unsettling beauty, somewhere between that of the religious icon and the sci-fi fantastic.

Howard Yezerski Gallery
460 Harrison Ave.
Boston, Massachusetts 02118
www.howardyezerskigallery.com
Tues. - Sat. 10 - 5:30 pm

Ritchienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5282184.post-73334897158889287822009-07-02T00:23:00.001-07:002009-07-02T00:23:48.390-07:00SOMERVILLE GALLERY EXHIBITION - July 11 - August 9, 2009The Nave Gallery
Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church
155 Powderhouse Blvd
Somerville, MA 02144
www.navegallery.org

Press contact: Susan Berstler
info@navegallery.org

"Physical Digital" at the Nave Gallery in Somerville
Rachel Gargiulo ◊ Ted Ollier ◊ John Pyper ◊ Liz Shepherd
Four artists interpreting ways of turning virtual information into physical
structures.
Exhibit dates: 11 Jul - 9 Aug 2009
Opening Reception 11 Jul · 6-9 pm

Free and open to the public.
High res images available upon request.

ABOUT THE SHOW

(Somerville, MA) Physical Digital features sculptures and works on paper by
Rachel Gargiulo, Ted Ollier, John Pyper, and Liz Shepherd, each of whom
explores unique aspects of the structure and configurations inherent in
living digitally.

Today we find ourselves surrounded by data, meta-data, information,
references, keys, passwords, hyperlinks, applets, status bars,
transactions, and other digital ephemera. While these tools can provide a
bona fide relief this data is often an annoying companion that we are
forced to live with daily. A digital fog, sometimes navigable, sometimes
tiresomely perplexing has descended on our lives.

Gargiulo's "Chronicle I: The Pretenders" details her side of a
collaborative project where she produced a simulated love affair on the
internet. The online correspondence prior to their initial face to face
meeting is documented here. The consequences of this emotional simulation
are not yet evident.

Ollier <http://www.mindhuestudio.com/> scrutinizes the information for
which we have developed blind-spots -- the barcode, the scaleless map, the
depiction of compression, the languages that run our computers, and
unintentional digital artifacts. His meticulously accurate depictions
create abstract forms that force us to reconsider what we thought we
already knew.

Pyper explores the fiction, appearance, and ephemera found in the
backgrounds of home video game console games. His objects and prints allow
us to approach objects sought after and navigated through for countless
hours in a new and material way.

Shepherd <http://www.lizshepherd.com/> has developed a visual vocabulary by
digitally drawing with discarded everyday illustrations. Her hushed totems
of travelers made from architectural drawings and her depictions of
hopeless characters acting out dangerous activities derives from digital
manipulations and contextualized images.

Ritchienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5282184.post-2381674259797057282009-07-01T23:10:00.000-07:002009-07-01T23:12:26.855-07:00BOSTON MOBIUS EVENTS - June 29 - July 6, 2009Boston: Exhibit
Photographs by Bob Raymond and
Installation by Wenxiong Lin @Studio Soto
EXHIBIT: June 21st through July 19th, 2009

Studio Soto presents:

this: moment
missives from another world
photographs by Bob Raymond (MAG)
+
S T I L L M O V E
installation by Wenxiong Lin

Studio Soto at Thompson Design Group
35 Channel Center Street, corner
gallery hours Fri 4 - 7; Sat 2 - 5; Sun 2 - 5
www.studiosoto.org

Cohasset: Exhibit
Faculty Art Show @Dillon Gallery
June 5th through July 12th, 2009

featuring

"Down the Yangtze"
a collage by Margaret Bellafiore (MAG)

Dillon Gallery @South Shore Art Center in Cohasset
Website: www.ssac.org

money

Address:
South Shore Art Center
119 Ripley road
Cohasset, MA
781 383 2787

Boston: Performance Art
Every day @12 noon: Oct 7, 2007 - Oct 6, 2009
Trinity Church

The Human Cost of War
Joanne Rice (MAG)

http://www.iraqbodycount.org/

matt2
photo: Matt Samolis
About Mobius:
Mobius (est. 1977) is a non-profit, artist-run organization, whose mission is to generate, shape and test experimental art. The piece was created by Nell Breyer and Alissa Cardone-- leaders
in the New England dance community and organizers of Boston Cyberarts' dance
and technology events for the last several Festivals -- along with their
colleagues Lorraine Chapman and Bronwen MacArthur.
The piece is part of
the Summer Stages Dance/Baryshnikov Arts CenterResidency Project 2008. It was
commissioned and developed by Summer Stages Dance, in association with the Baryshnikov
Arts Center, The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, the Regional Dance
Development Initiative of the New England Foundation for the Arts, and Vermont
Performance Lab.
It's happening on July 11 at 7:30 at the ICA,
100 Northern Ave in Boston. This
gallery installation puts the viewer in the belly of a film projector, brought
into motion by model steam locomotives and by the spectators themselves.
The locomotives transport projector bulbs illuminating over 200 celluloid
oversized film frames, selected from the silent films that form a ribbon
spooling between two reels, spanning the entire space. Moving through the
installation, the viewers, like film editors, assemble frames into the scenes.
"The Refractive
Kinescope" is on view through October 18 at the MCLA Gallery 51 Annex @ 65 Main
Street in North Adams. There will also be live dance performances in the
gallery at 6pm on July 30, August 27, and September 24. The installation was commissioned
by Downstreet Art. Kinodance Companycreated the concept; the sculptural
installation is by Dedalus Wainwright and Alla Kovgan with contributions from
Bryan Long and Gideon Weisz; and the performers include Alissa Cardone, Ingrid
Schatz and guest artist Michael Jahoda. Running 24/7, life-size screen images and AV technology will enable
real-time chat between residents of the two neighborhoods. These portals would also
act as media centers for news collection and
dissemination. In this way, the viewing and sharing of news is brought out of
private spheres and into a public forum - a kind of virtual town hall meeting.
The project is being
organized by John Ewing, in collaboration with Carmen Montoya, Kevin Patton,
Christopher Robbins and Minotte Romulus. Those of you who have been following Boston
Cyberarts for awhile will
remember John's earlier project called "Symphony of a City," which premiered at
the 2001 Boston Cyberarts Festival. "Symphony of a City," pictured here, used
headcams, projections and streaming video to paint a portrait of Boston through
the eyes of eight different residents - with results projected on the walls of
Boston's City Hall.
We'll keep you posted
on the progress of "Virtual Street Corners" as the project gets closer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cyber-Publicity for You
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you have a cyber event or exhibition coming up this fall? If so, please send
details and an image to press@bostoncyberarts.org [mailto:press@bostoncyberarts.org]
by the 15th of the month preceding your event. Standing at the Pacific shore, he started to plan longer trips: west to Asia and east to Europe.

Shots Abroad: International Photography by John Martino, which is on view at the Brookline Arts Center from Thursday, June 18 to Friday, July 17, 2009, presents a selection of black and white photographs from Martino’s voyages across Asia and Europe. A free opening reception with Martino will be held on Thursday, June 18 from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

“When I am out in the streets photographing, I try to notice the details that imply a larger context,” says Martino. “With the camera, I transform my surroundings into an image that is also a work of fiction. The best photographs bring a magical perspective: they cast spells that charm the viewer into attention.”

“We have shown John Martino’s Boston-based photography in previous shows,” says exhibition curator Susan Navarre. "Now, it’s very exciting to see the connections he made with other cultures during his four-month immersion in the cultures of Asia. And always, John’s stunning black and white prints are filled with the rich hues and detail of traditional photography on film.”

Martino lives near the Brookline Arts Center, in the Fenway neighborhood. He is from the Pittsburgh area and has a Ph.D. in English from West Virginia University. Martino’s work has been collected by the Boston Public Library and the New England School of Photography, and was featured in one-person exhibitions at the Eclipse Gallery, Stairwell Gallery and the Massachusetts State House in Boston; and McQuade Art Gallery, Olin Gallery, Khaki Gallery and Village Art Gallery elsewhere in Massachusetts.

Shots Abroad is on view Monday through Friday from 9:00am – 4:30 pm. The glistening, shining surfaces of her paintings give them an appearance of being wet with beaded water. The physical properties of the paintings fill viewers with an almost irresistible urge to touch them.

However, if the artwork is touched, it is easily scratched and residues from oils and salts from fingertips and hands are left behind. This will cause major damage to the surfaces over time.

In response to this dilemma, the artist has created a special piece of artwork entitled “PLEASE DO TOUCH” as part of the collection in this exhibit. Sand T says she “hopes this particular piece gratifies the 100 touch receptors in each of your fingertips, and the other works touch your sense of sight and artistic sensibility.

Viewers will have a chance to see 10 new pieces from Sand T’s latest collection in this solo exhibit at the Willow Community Gallery at LynnARTS from June 15 through July 17, 2009. The public is cordially invited to a reception with the artist scheduled for Saturday, June 27, from 2-4pm.

SAND T’s new works on acrylic glass panel using epoxy resin and graphite create a meditative visual experience with basic elements of dot, line, color, surface and light. They suggest abstract concepts such as time, concentration, and the meditative energies of motion.

Simplicity, repetition, and structure inspire the unifying theme of this exhibition. This is achieved through lines drawn with graphite, dots formed by resin droplets, monochromatic color scheme, square panels and light.

These newly created works will join another 90 pieces of the series in an exhibition at the Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah at University Sains Malaysia in Penang, Malaysian for the month of December in 2009.

Sand T was awarded FIRST PLACE by Nick Capasso, Senior Curator of the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park of Lincoln, MA for works from this series submitted to a juried show at Clark University in November 2007.

Sand T has exhibited her work in solo shows in Malaysia and the United States. She has participated in group shows in the United States, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. Her work resides in public and private art collections worldwide, including Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and The United States.

LynnArts is a private non-profit dedicated to enriching the lives of Lynn residents and the Greater North Shore Community by offering cultural and educational programming that fosters an appreciation of, and access to, the visual and performing arts.

“TOUCH ME NOT” exhibition is on view from June 15 through July 17. Thematically his work deals with our, often, dysfunctional relationship with nature and with one another. Looking at one of Bulkeley's pieces the viewer is initially seduced by what appears to be a bright happy world. On closer inspection we discover that under this bright veneer of color and surface things are not going so well. Limbs litter the landscape along with beer cans, packs of gum, candy and cigarettes. A bear like creature stares out at us with a portion of a human torso in its mouth. Bulkeley makes work that encourages us to ponder the human condition while at the same time captivating us with his wit, whimsy and hand.

Catherine Kehoe, who is known for her self-portraits, treats her still-lifes with the same intensity, capturing diverse textures and effects with startling economy. There is a poignant melancholy in Kehoe's work that speaks to the passage of time and memory as well as endurance and strength. A highly accomplished draftsman Kehoe combines her drawing ability with a similar mastery of the palette knife. Using knife and brush she is able to construct compelling "portraits of flowers from planes of color".

Donald Shambroom makes large scale paintings of plants at unusual, often unnoticed points in their life cycle, in spring or early fall, before or after they have flowered. He is moved by the notion of animated things coming from the inanimate, as poppies growing from the trenches of war. The paintings begin with the study of these plants, followed by their sometimes, rapid re-animation in paint, and a reinvention of their gestures, color and light. Their growth is both exuberant and unpredictable. The results are paintings that are at the same time beautiful and provocative.

Howard Yezerski Gallery
460 Harrison Ave.
Boston, Massachusetts 02118
Tues.- Sat. 10 - 5:30pm
www.howardyezerskigallery.com

Ritchienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5282184.post-56236541383671842072009-05-27T23:34:00.000-07:002009-05-27T23:35:03.638-07:00BOSTON GALLERY EXHIBITION - May 30 - July 3, 2009Success and Happiness:
New Work by AIR Alumni, Kelly Sherman

Barbara Krakow Gallery
10 Newbury St, 5th Floor
Boston, MA
617-262-4490

Exhibition: May 30th to July 3rd
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 30th, 3-5 pm
Artist Talk: Saturday, June 20th, 2pm

K.
