Aviva World Trials and UK Championships 2009

Shrewsbury had one athlete at the World Trial/ UK Championships this weekend.

Emma Pullen ran in the 400m, after team mate Claire Burgoyne pulled out the same event after physio advice.

Emma ran in heat 1 against Christine Ohuruogu (Olympic Champion) and finished 3rd in 56.20. This performance gave Emma the chance to run in the B Final, but she also withdraw with concerns over a foot injury.

English Schools

At one of the most prestigious and biggest competition, the English Schools Shrewsbury AC had 3 athletes.

Hannah Bridgwater made it through to semi final in 75m hurdles. She Ran 11.7 in heat to equal her pb. Just missing out qualifying for the final.
Libby Naylor ran 11.91 in her heat of hurdles just 1/100th out side her pb.
Sam Edwards came 8th in triple jump setting new pb 14.08m.
He opened with 14.04 then improved in 3rd round and again in final round.

All SAC athletes pleased with their performances especially as it was the first English schools for them all. Well done all.

Midland League, 3rd Meeting at Stourport

Shrewsbury Men and Ladies produced another good set of performances at Stourport, with the Shrewsbury Men winning for the 3rd time, only to pipped into 2nd Place by 22 points, by home team Kidderminster and Stourport.

This means that Shrewsbury must win (or finish above K&S to win the division), but we are all but certain to gain promotion.

We need everybody at the next meeting, to produce a big finish on the end of an excellent season.

AVIVA ENGLAND UNDER 23 AND UNDER 20 CHAMPIONSHIPS

At the Under 23 English Championships in Bedford on Saturday Emma Pullen ran the 400m. In her heat she ran 56.17 and finished 3rd to gain her place in the final .

In the final on Sundy, she ran another PB 55.2 secs and finished 3rd, bringing home the Gold Medal.

Well done Emma.

Junior Snowdonia Fells - Moel Hebog

Junior club member Ross Kirby took on the fells in the Snowdonia series over a 2mile course which took in 700ft of climb.
Hot conditions made the race even more of a challenge, however Ross completed the course in 23:55 to finish 12th overall.

Rodneys Pillar Fell Race

8 Club members turned out to run this years event, as well as the club providing the marshalls for the course.

Juanda Castillo was first home in 8th place overall, ahead of Pete Ball in 11th and Kev Francis in 13th. Grant Lloyd showed a strong uphill run to be in the leading group, eventually finishing in 19th.

Our next 3 runners finished in 36th, 39th and 43rd places with only a minute gap between each of them. Callum Dodd 31:02, Dan Fleetwood 32:07, Adam Stockwell 33:03.
Rob Tedcastle was our final runner in 50th place.

Next race in the Summer Fell calendar is the Pontesbury Fell Race this Wednesday, 24th June @ 7.30pm. SAC is hosting this event, so your support as a competitor or as a marshall is appreciated.

Shrewsbury Master (Veterans) continued the success of the clubs juniors athletes on Sunday at the Midland Masters Athletic Champs at Solihull.

They came away with 4 Gold Medals, 4 Silver and four Bronze, including a Championship Best Performance for Peter Duckers.

Senior Shrewsbury debuts for Katie, Tom E, Nick, Becky and Olivia.

Stretton Hills Fell Race

New Hammer Cage

The new Hammer and Discus throws cage was been installed at the track last month.

The cage was partly funded by the Norwich Union £1,000 grant, so a big thank you to everyone who voted for our cause.

The remaining cost of the cage was provided by the club and the council.

Also Libby Naylor was the only Shrewsbury Athlete at Birmingham for the under 15 & under 17 Midland Champs.

Libby was 3rd in her 100m heat in 13.57 and was second in her 200m heat finishing 6th in the final with a PB of 26.86

Midland League First Meeting

Shrewsbury athletes produced excellent performances at Mansfield in the first meeting finishing the event in second place.
Shrewsbury Men won with the women second behind Kidderminster & Stourport. We had probably the most talented team there winning many of the events including 1st A and B strings. Unfortunately the lack of distance runners meant we couldn’t challenge K&S for 1st place.
Well done to all who competed and thanks to Peter, Doreen, Rob, Vanessa and Judith for their help.

British Records for Pete Duckers

In the British Masters 56lb ( 25kg)weight Champs at Stoke on Peter got the silver medal with an overall distance/height of 35.66m.

He also got the British over 65 record for the Heavy Slingball (28lbs or kg 12.70) at 7.02m,
beat his own British Record in the Heavy Hammer (28lbs or kg 12.70) by 3cm with 10.34m, and equalled his own British Record of 4.20m in the Heavy Hammer for Height (28lbs or kg12.70).

Mad Jack's Five 2009

Following the success of the inaugural Mad Jacks Five race in 2008, Shrewsbury Athletic Club have confirmed the date for this years event.

In partnership with, and by kind permission of the National Trust, the race is again hosted at Attingham Park on Sunday 8th November with an 11am start.

Shropshire Year 5 & 6 Cross Country Champs.

The winter Cross Country season came to a close this weekend for our young athletes who competed in the County Championships at SCAT. With 5 athletes only competing across the 4 races, we fell short of fielding a full scoring team in any of the races, however individually the performances were again encouraging and full reward for the hard work put in over the winter.

With the ground good for a fast race, the only challenge was the swirling winds which circled the first quarter of the race in the exposed sports fields.
First up, Eve Lucas ran the Y5 Girls race as the clubs sole representative. A steady start was a sensible tactic running into the winds, and this allowed Eve to pace a good run for the remainder. While her opponents were recovering from over-exertions through the wind, Eve picked off a number of placings to finish in 28th position.

Next up saw the Y5 Boys trio of Eddie Brittleton and twins Tom & Freddie Turner compete, all fresh from recent successes in a local inter school competition. The boys grouped together tightly for the first half of the course, but at this point both the Turners cranked things up a gear to pull away from a large group to chase down the leading pack. It was Freddie who put a consistent effort in for the full second half of the race, including a very fast past final 200m where he moved up 3 places to finish a superb 6th overall. Tom followed his brother in closely in 10th as he pulled away from a group which included Eddie Brittleton in 15th. A very strong showing from the boys indeed.

Our final interest in the days action saw the ever consistent pair of Luke Howes & Ross Kirby take to the field in the Y6 Boys race over 1600m.
As in previous races this season, the boys worked together in the early stages of the race, with a couple of metres between them leading into the halfway stage. Luke then moved on with the aim of closing down the leading pair, with a fast finish rewarded with 5th place ahead of Ross who lead home a group of five athletes to finish 11th.

Masters Cross Country Teams- Two Top Ten Finishes.

Shrewsbury AC took two teams to the British Masters Cross Country Championships Ruthin, and had two top ten team finishers with Kev Francis and Graham Jones leading the two teams home both in 9th place in this National Event.

National Indoor Championships and European Indoor Trails

One of our Senior tarck athletes Claire Burgoyne recently travelled to Sheffield for the NAtional Indoor Championships and European Indoor Trails to compete in the womens 400m. The event attracts the all the top British athletes all hoping to gain selection for the European Indoor Championships to be held soon in Italy.

Claire went in the second heat and finished a close third of five competitors qualifying to run in the next round later in the day. When this race came around she went up against some of the favourites to win the final. When she got to this race she had to come in the first three to go through to the final. Claire held onto fourth all the way through the race so just missed out on making the final. She managed to stay consistant with her times throughout the day running 55 seconds for both races.

W. Midlands Regional Sportshall Finals

Under 11 Fun in Athletics W. Midlands Regional event at Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre on 25th January. The following Under 11 athletes from Shrewsbury AC represented Shropshire - Lauren Rickard, Charlotte Edwards, Ellie Ferguson, Sally Joyce, Luke Howes, Alex Wetton and James Woollam.

Under 13/Under 15 W. Midlands Regional Sportshall Finals at Perdiswell Leisure Centre, Worcester on 1st February.
Lucy Freeman and Fae Lester represented Shropshire in the Under 15 Girls All Rounder competition and helped their team to finish in a superb 2nd place overall behind winners Birmingham.

Well done to all Shrewsbury Athletes selected for Shropshire.

Shropshire Sportshall League Review

For the first time in a number of years Shrewsbury AC were able to put out teams of Under 11s and some Under 13 and Under 15 athletes to compete in the Shropshire Sportshall League - a competition held over 4 league meetings during the winter season and involving all the clubs in Shropshire.
Both the Under 11 Girls and Boys competed extremely well to give the other clubs some strong opposition and there were some outstanding individual performances. Going into the final league meeting at Oswestry on 8th February things couldn't have been closer in the Under 11 Girls competition with Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Telford all in with a chance of winning the overall team trophy.
But a magnificent team performance from the Shrewsbury girls - Charlotte Edwards, Holly Shaw, Jordan Hall, Ellie Ferguson, Lauren Rickard and Sally Joyce, saw them win overall on the day with 85 points - ahead of Oswestry 75 points and Telford 59 points. This was enough to take the Under 11 Girls team trophy with 15.5 league points, beating Telford into 2nd place with 15 league points and Oswestry 3rd with 14.5 league points.
The Shrewsbury Under 11 Boys and Under 15 Girls teams finished in 3rd place overall with the Under 13 Girls and Boys in 5th place overall.
In the overall Team competition Shrewsbury finished third, behind Telford and Oswestry.
Very pleasing results and great support and enthusiasm from all the young athletes.

Silverware Haul for Shrewsbury AC

The clubs recent & continued success over the Cross Country season has been rewarded by a haul of team & individual silverware after the North Wales X Country League finale last weekend.

Pictured with the Veterans Team Shield and Mens Senior Trophy is club captain Graham Jones, whose efforts in transforming the teams success was recognised by the League organisers who presented him the Bebbington Trophy.

Club legend Evan Williams is pictured with his Over 70s 3rd prize, and Anna Bartlett with her 3rd overall and 2nd in V35 trophies.
