What is Periodontal Disease?

An estimated 80% of American adults currently have some form of periodontal disease. "Perio" means around, and "dontal" refers to teeth. Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures around the teeth, including the gums and the bones that hold the teeth. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis-an infection of the gums. To maintain proper periodontal health it is recommended that you see your dentist twice a year and maintain proper hygiene, i.e. proper brushing and flossing. At your next hygiene visit please ask your hygienist the proper techniques!!

Breath RX

Breath RX is a scientific bad breath treatment system specially designed to help treat both the causes of bad breath and the symptoms. The system attacks the causing bacteria and neutralizes the foul smell. It is recommended as an antimicrobial mouth rinse in conjunction with brushing twice daily and flossing once a day. Breath Rx is available at Walgreens and they usually have a special deal on it!!

Electric Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes move the bristles at a much faster rate then the human hand can possibly move. With the bristles moving much faster, the toothbrush is more aptly able to remove plaque and can provide a better clean for in between the teeth. Although they have been shown in studies to significantly reduce the amount of plaque on the teeth, no electric toothbrush eliminates the need for flossing. To get the best deal on an electric toothbrush you should go to Costco. Not all toothbrushes are created equal, so be sure to do your research before buying.

MI Paste

MI paste is a milk derived product containing Recaldent that is applied with your finger or toothbrush after your regular brushing and flossing routine. MI paste helps in increasing the strength of the enamel on your tooth, increasing salivary flow, boosting fluoride sensitivity and decreasing sensitivity. We recommend this product for people experiencing sensitivity associated with whitening or gum recession, those who are currently undergoing or have recently completed orthodontic treatment and those with dry mouth associated with medication. This product is safe for those who are lactose intolerant but not those with an actual milk allergy. We do sell this product in our office, so ask about it next time you are in!

Biotene

Biotene offers many products that help relieve symptoms of dry mouth, also known as xerostomia. The reduction of saliva can make you more susceptible to cavities and gum irritations. Biotene products contain enzymes that help replenish and boost the natural antibacterial action of saliva. Ask one of our hygienists about Biotene next time you are in!

Xylitol

Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener that is being incorporated into chewing gum, breath mints and candy. Studies have shown that Xylitol is both non-cariogenic in that it doesn't contribute to the formation of dental cavities and is cariostatic because it prevents or reduces the incidence of new cavities. Xylitol actually reduces the amount of plaque and the number of bacteria associated with tooth decay in plaque. Look for Xylitol as a secondary sweetener in gum, such as Ice Breakers Ice Cubes and Trident!!

Adult Fluoride

Studies show that fluoride helps fight tooth decay in people of all ages. In our office, adult fluoride is applied in the form of a varnish. This varnish adheres to the tooth to deliver the fluoride over a 4-6 hour time period. Fluoride can also give relief to people with hypersensitive teeth, in addition to helping fight tooth decay. Ask us about it next time you are in!!

Peridex

The main ingredient in Peridex is Chlorhexidine Gluconate, which is a germicidal mouthwash. Chlorhexidine Gluconate reduces the bacteria in the gums and is used to treat gingivitis (inflammation, redness and bleeding of the gums). Peridex does need to be prescribed by a Dentist, so ask us about it next time you are in!
