AbbeyFest 2008 is underway with fabulous line up of top shows in the Colour House Theatre, including late night theatre for the first time. We have four 1 hour shows throughout July opening with a hilarious musical comedy, Under The Knife, a great take on the world of cosmetic surgery! In August we have longer shows finishing with a double bill of two new shows, The Cage Birds and Lord Buckley.

Last year we reintroduced open air theatre with a very successful production of A Mid Summer Nights Dream, so this year we have gone for three productions; an innovative and exciting adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Neverland The Peter Pan Musical (a magical, spellbinding musical extravaganza), and to finish, Tales of the Old North, a show filled with fantasy, fairytales and black magic. An exciting line up for all the family to enjoy!

All our favourite jazz artists for the ever popular series of free Friday night jazz concerts, in particular Tony O'Malley who launches this years festival on Friday 4th July. In addition, and another first, we have programmed a superb season of free weekend lunchtime jazz sessions running throughout July and August from 1pm - 4pm on both Saturdays and Sundays.

The blues this year (Blues at the Mills) starts a day earlier on Thursday 21st August, a bonus for all you Blues lovers out there!

Our Comedy line up (Slaughterville at the Watermill) is possibly the strongest weve had to date, with 4 Edinburgh preview nights and 3 stand up shows. We bring you a top quality gathering of some of the best comedians on the circuit today, guaranteeing lots of laughter along the way.

To complement the festival's music theme we have programmed a couple of delightful chamber concerts (Sunday Evening Music Among Friends).

Mrs Eddy

A little old lady is on trial. Her son wants to prove that she is mentally and physically incompetent and he should take control of her assets.

However, this is no ordinary little old lady. This is Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science and widely reported as imprisoned at home against her will, and dying or dead.

Mrs Eddy opens at the Colourhouse on June 12, 2008.

7:30 pm on the 20th February 2008 sees the launch of regular quiz night that will run on the third Wednesday of each month in the Colour House Theatre.

Entry is 2 pounds per person for teams of up to five, and money will be raised for the Disasters Emergency Committee.

The Mack Big Band

The Mack Big Band invites you free of charge to its public rehearsals every Tuesday evening 7:30 for 8pm in the Colour House Theatre.

Come along, get a drink from the bar, and listen to 5 saxes, 3 trombones, 4 trumpets, piano, bass, guitar, drums and vocalists run through a classic big band repertoire.

The line up started its life as the a rehearsal band run by the Great British Band Leader, Ken Mackintosh who sadly passed away in 2005.

To dancers at the great London ballrooms of the Empire, Leicester Square, and the Hammersmith Palais, the name of Ken Mackintosh was synonymous with suave orchestral accompaniments, which he provided for more than 14 years in the 1960s and 1970s.

To fans of Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey and Matt Monro, Mackintosh was the bandleader who frequently backed them on national tours.

To enthusiasts of big band music, he was a musician who kept the spirit of the great 1940s swing dance orchestras alive, while providing more contemporary fare for younger audiences.

Come and hear what all the fuss was about.

Something in the Air

In early 2008, inventor Trevor Baylis will launch London's first ground-based wind turbine at Merton Abbey Mills.

The turbine will be used to supply 100% green electricity to The Colour House Theatre, making it the first in the world to be powered exclusively by wind energy.

CabareX

For the second year running, the Hot Stuff Theatre company return to the Colour House Theatre with CabareX, a scintillating combination of music-hall comedy and burlesque.

Performances at 8pm from Wednesday 20 to Saturday 22 December 2007, with two tickets for the price of one on Wednesday.

THE SNAIL OF ELBING

The Colour House Theatre's resident Wheelhouse Theatre Company's commitment to new writing will bear fruit in 2008 with the premiere of Barry Langley's "The Snail of Elbing".

Langley, whose directorial credits in film and TV span five decades, has crafted a challenging play - set in war torn Prussia during the Nazi uprising - in which an SS officer's divided loyalties wrench him between his duty and his wife, as she is entering into a dangerous affair with a Jew.

The author will be working closely with director Peter Duggan when rehearsals begin early in the New Year for a March run, and in an innovative initiative the play has been made available to interested parties for the duration of audtions.

Update: February 11, 2008. Script No Longer Available as we move towards rehearsal.

There is something for everyone in the Colour House Theatre on weekends.

On Friday October 10, in "Exchanging Notes" - as part of the Wimbledon Book Festival - pianist, writer and broadcaster Susan Tomes, author of A Musician's Alphabet, talks to Robert Philip, author of Performing Music in the Age of Recording about the pleasures and pains of a life in classical music.

For the kids, Red Riding Hood - the Colour House Children's Theatre's 63rd production - plays 2pm and 4pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday.

And finally make sure that you book your tickets for the Wheelhouse Theatre Company's stunning version of Hedda Gabler which will be performed at 7:30pm on Saturday and then return on Monday for the final week of its run.

The Colour House Theatre is situated in the picturesque setting of Merton Abbey Mills, a riverside oasis in South Wimbledon, and is run by Wheelhouse Productions.

Opening in 1995 with its first show 'Goodnight Gilda', the Colour House has seen more than 100,000 through its doors. It is home to the acclaimed Wheelhouse Theatre Company, who stage dramatic work from classics to cutting edge new writing and musical shows throughout the year. Their seasons combine in-house work and incoming independent productions of the highest quality.

The theatre is also home to the Colour House Childrens Thetare which has produced over 50 musical shows for families during its 13 year history.

The Colour House Theatre is available for hire for theatrical productions, private parties, events, exhibitions, concerts, workshops, rehearsals and castings.
