First, I was having ISP troubles. I think my webhosting is still kind of weird, but FTP seems to be working a LITTLE better. Then, we went on a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada. We weren't expecting the Las Vegasiness of it all. Still, it was fun. Niagara Falls IS pretty, and they light the waterfalls up at night. (We don't think they are as pretty as Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-10514820324127415742007-08-08T07:44:00.000-04:002007-08-08T16:28:07.334-04:00Which socks should I make?I have this Queen Anne's Lace (wild carrot) yarn:Which of these should I make? The latest Six Sox KAL socks, I Love Gansey socksHederaBaudelaireHelp me decide, I just have to sew together my last Six Sox KAL socks and then I will have no socks to knit on the bus! They are sort of lemon-flavoured. (Isn't it amazing what random things one eats when one is small?)I decided to try to try dyeing with it, here's what I got:At first, I didn't like the beigey colour, but it kind of grew on me over time, there is something fun and old-fashioned about it.For colour referenceRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-61546546979998566592007-08-01T23:41:00.000-04:002007-08-01T23:45:53.700-04:00Harry Pottering AlongI finally finished clue #1 of the Mystery Stole. Now I am just three and a half clues behind. I thought I would make some headway this week, but I finally got my Harry Potter book.Yesterday when I was getting my coffee I saw a lady pushing a baby carriage down the sidewalk with a bird cage inside and a grey parrot perched on the handle.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-54033182962809953842007-07-24T21:14:00.000-04:002007-07-24T21:24:39.322-04:00April CornellThe other day, I was cooking supper and was wearing an April Cornell dress and spilled whatever I was cooking (it involved grease) all over my pretty dress. So I decided I needed an apron.I found this free "pattern" (it's more like a set of instructions). I happened to have some pretty stash fabric that had been intended for some gift project that I never made years ago, so I sewed myself an Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-26027062877657227642007-07-20T19:48:00.000-04:002007-07-21T13:04:38.837-04:00New HampshireLast weekend, we went up to Concord, New Hampshire to see Okkervil River play. We stayed in the fabulous Centennial Inn. It is a beautiful Victorian, redecorated in a classic modern style. Our room was beautiful. The food was excellent, and reasonably priced. The bathroom had Gilchrist & Soames soap, shampoo, AND conditioner. And of course, the concert was fun.I had joined the Mystery StoleRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-42123084529242594192007-07-13T08:54:00.000-04:002007-07-13T10:18:50.591-04:00Weed PlayI had these weeds growing in my yard, they reminded me of Japanese Indigo and I thought maybe I can do something with them:As a Girl Scout, I always won the plant identification contest, I enjoyed poring through books to find the match. So I used Google and identified these as Polygonum Persicaria, in English smartweed (among other names: Redshank, Lady's thumb, Heartweed), in Icelandic flóajurtRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-5282850200165423442007-07-09T21:40:00.000-04:002007-07-09T22:02:18.094-04:00Into the Way Back MachineWe went to an antique store the other day, and I found this vintage knitting book from the 1970s. It's pretty cool, some of the stuff is dated, but there are some nice articles on basic design and fitting, and some stitch patterns (with samples in colour) and tips on crochet and embroidery. I'm kind of excited to have this good basic reference, especially with crochet, which I am still not goodRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-22708688182536004872007-06-29T17:32:00.000-04:002007-07-13T10:19:38.684-04:00White Coral BellsI have a lot of lily of the valley growing in my garden:So I decided to cut it up and put it in a dye pot:I cooked it and let it sit overnight. Then I strained out (and discarded) the leaves and put yarn that had been mordanted with alum into the pot. I cooked that for a couple of hours, until it looked ready, then I left it overnight. I washed it out in the morning, and let it dry:Now I have Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-7516668350625533422007-06-25T21:17:00.000-04:002007-06-26T17:24:44.646-04:00Moominsummer MadnessEvery year, one of my university friends has a big midsummer party. I always feel like I am dragging K to this party of crazy people drinking akvavit and eating homemade pickled herring and roast pig. She was really disappointed to miss it. I love the colourful sock yarns but I keep liking this intricate patterns that look awful with it.I went to the hardware store today to get Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-47151368710605714962007-06-14T20:39:00.000-04:002007-06-15T17:03:18.551-04:00Oh, DeerEvery morning, I go make coffee and get a glass of orange juice and drink my juice while reading emails. This morning, I looked out the window and I saw a black-tailed deer. Sadly, I don't have a decent camera, so I couldn't get a picture. Which is really too bad, because they aren't from around here, they are from the other side of the country. Part of the problem is that my tape measures seem to have all run off with the gypsies. Or whomever it is that tape measures run off with. At any rate, I thought this sweater seemed to be long enough, until I finished the lace bit (the really complicated lace chart bit that took days) and realized the sweater didn't measure the number of cm it wasRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-5045923614047678952007-06-06T21:30:00.000-04:002007-06-06T21:50:31.041-04:00Roses grow(Bonus points for anyone who recognizes the song title)It's been a crazy week, so I've been knitting but have had no time to photograph knitting, and am sharing a shot of my roses which suddenly budded and opened over the last few days. There are also a few flax plants flowering near them, as well as my lavender all budding. This is such a fun time of year.So instead I will share a few fun Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-6347746473783439582007-05-31T18:03:00.000-04:002007-05-31T18:22:26.674-04:00Seven Random ThingsTabitha tagged me, so I guess I will play.I think we've all seen the rules, but just in case.... if you are tagged, you are supposed to write the rules and seven facts about yourself. You are theoretically supposed to tag 7 other people and leave their names on your blog as well as leaving a comment on their blog, but I don't think I will do that to anyone. But we did see a nice Icelandic woman,. she tracked us down after we had had a chat with the sheep breeders about Iceland.I had to buy Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-79453694749286382132007-05-24T17:31:00.000-04:002007-05-24T18:36:08.694-04:00Stepford WifeI got a pool membership today, so I think that makes me officially a suburbanite. Scary. In keeping with my Stepford Wife status, I made some food for a school fair, Swedish meatballs and Pepparkakor. When there is decent sunlight, I'm busy, and my digital camera is crappy enough to not photograph things well if it's not bright out.I finished the Elfine socks the other week, and I even wore them last week when it got a bit colder again. Rósaleppaprjón í nýju ljósi, which I thought looked like a cool book, but I was mistaken. It is actually an incredibly cool book. There is a huge section on various knitting history (mostly focused on different types of classic shoe insoles, which the designs are based on). A colourful hat for the pope? An alternate shell for a large tortoise who has misplaced his?I hope that last step doesn't need much yarn because this leftover stash yarn is almost gone. I had to rewind the purple yarn to finish this bit. This is a peculiar New England thing (I guess anyway) where at least in this town everyone argues about the budget. We have two groups, the people who think the elected officials are making sensible decisions about the budget, and a group that just doesn't wantRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-73334137113702036272007-05-02T17:56:00.000-04:002007-05-02T18:10:17.153-04:00Kool YarnI dyed some yarn with Kool-aid this weekend:I love those expensive hand-dyed yarns that get pretty variegation in the same colour. So I wanted to try getting that effect with Kool-aid dyeing. I love how it's knitting up so far. Here's how I got the effect. I took one 100 g skein of superwash white yarn and soaked it in the sink with 1 cup of vinegar and a squirt of castille soap and warm water.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03721322624791772809noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5266070.post-79020301113396211362007-04-28T00:28:00.000-04:002007-04-28T00:36:09.542-04:00Christmas gift knitting beginsI haven't been able to get a picture of the shawl in-action, or Aftur (which I actually wore today, since it got cooler). So here's something I started this week (excuse the blurry picture, hopefully I can get a shot with better lighting later):It is the Horcrux socks, from the Yahoo Group Six Sock Knitalong.
