Weekend - Oct. 11 - 12
There is so much to see and do this weekend! On Saturday, Oct. 11, wander the streets of downtown Brenham for the 3rd Annual Festival of Fine Arts from 9 am to 5 pm. Enjoy juried works of art in just about every medium from paintings, jewelry, photography and more.

Next, head to the country for Autumn Fest at the Monastery of St. Clare miniature horse farm. Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, enjoy games, cart rides and see the newest foal born weeks ago. Take some time to paint your own ceramic at the Art Barn gift shop.

The 31st Annual Scarecrow Festival in Chappell Hill can't be missed on Saturday and Sunday. More than 300 juried exhibitors with home decor, holiday items, clothing and jewelry accompany the live entertainment and food vendors to celebrate the season of scarecrows and pumpkins. Saturday hours are 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday hours are noon to 5 pm.

Visit Ellison's Greenhouses for National Herb Day on Saturday. Learn how to grow herbs, make herbal vinegar and herbal butters and spreads. These programs begin at 11 am and 1 pm. With all the talk of food, you'll want to stay around for a barbecue sandwich with proceeds benefiting the Brenham Children's Chorus.

Sit back and relax with the official release of Pleasant Hill Winery's 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon on Saturday and Sunday. This silver medal winner in the 2008 Lone Star International Wine Competition is made from 100 percent Texas Davis Mountain grapes.

Weekend - Oct. 17 - 19
Enjoy the Living Archeology History Fair & Festival on Oct. 17 - 18 at Fireman's Park near downtown Brenham. Kick up your heels to the sounds of Daniel and the Country Boys Friday from 7 - 10 pm. On Saturday, explore activities such as an antique car show, flag folding demonstration, speaking to an archeologist and more.

Don't miss the Blooms, Tunes, and Grub at Ellison's Greenhouses on Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. Check out the growing status of the 2008 poinsettias, see what is on sale - including pumpkins and veggies and the Greenvine Baptist Church Women's Bake Sale. As always, feast on one of Mike Kalil's barbecue sandwiches!

Make sure you stop by the Fall Fling held at the Senior Activity Center from 10 am to 3 pm. Arts and craft booths, bake sale goodies and entertainment promise a great time.

October - Other Highlights
Celebrate OKTOBERFEST at Rendez-vous restaurant in downtown Brenham Oct. 9 - 30 from 5 pm until it is quiet. Live German music Thursdays with Gene Hackemack and Fridays and Saturdays with Jason Keepers. Yodeling, Polka and Oompah music take over for October! Try some German "soda water" and food while listening to the tunes of the old country!

You can't miss Brenham Unity Theatre's Taming of the Shrew Oct. 23 through Nov. 9 with performances on Thursdays through Sundays. Shakespeare's ultimate battle of the sexes continues to amuse through the ages.

Ronnie Renfrow Big Band brings his 18-piece group to Blinn College to share the sounds of big band music on Oct. 26 at the W. W. O'Donnell Performing Arts Center beginning at 7 pm.

Samanthe-1923 American LaFrance Fire Truck

Samanthe is a 1923 American LaFrance fire truck and was Brenham's first motorized pumper. She has been fully restored to her original condition by the Texas Fire Museum in Dallas.

There were only 34 fire engines of this type manufactured between 1900 and the 1930's. Samanthe is only 1 of 3 that still exist.

She is housed in the Brenham Fire Company Museum at the corner of Alamo and Market in Historic Downtown Brenham.

Flying Horses Antique Carousel

This weekend marked the reopening of the fully restored Flying Horses Antique Carousel, located in Fireman's Park here in Brenham, Texas.

This carousel is one of 8 that still exist in Texas today and is the only example of a C.W. Parker carousel with Herschell-Spillman horses. It is one of the few known examples specifically built for a traveling carnival.

The carousel is housed in a unique 16 sided WPA building and was built sometime between 1895 & 1906.

This weekend the carousel was open on Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday from 1-4. The admission fee was a $1.00 /person/ride.

Lavender Farm Opens Saturday

Lavender Farm set to open Saturday

The Chappell Hill Lavender Farm opens for the season Saturday.

The 23-acre farm, which grows varieties of the fragrant herb, will remain open weekends through November. Group tours are available by appointment during the week.

The Chappell Hill Lavender Fest is set for Aug. 11, during blooming season.

The farm is eight miles north of Chappell Hill off of F.M. 1155. Hours are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Unity Theatre Production this SUMMER

Starting June 26th and running through to July 13th is this summers Unity Theatre production of Forever Plaid. This "heavenly" musical hit follows a 1950s singing group through a fatal car crash on the way to their big gig. The Plaids are miraculously revived to perform the concert that never was, entertaining audiences with side-splitting comedy and classic, toe-tapping '50s songs.

HAT - 25th Anniversary Annual Conference

For all of you current Innkeepers and aspiring Innkeepers mark you calendars for August 24, 25 & 26 for the 25th Anniversary Annual HAT Conference. This year this wonderful event will be held in Georgetown Texas at the Wyndham and Williamson Conference Center.

I have attended the HAT conference every year since 2000, even before I became a member of the organization. Every year I look forward to this opportunity the learn more about my industry, but even more than that I look forward to enteracting with other Innkeepers. I always learn something from just visiting with them.

There is also a wonderful Trade Show in conjuction with the Conference and I always find vendors that I need to be doing business with.

Blue Bell Commercial

Back in April we were so excited to be included in the many locations used to film Blue Bell Ice Cream commercials. They used the front porch of Ingleside to film a couple of the scenes. We can't wait to see the finished product.

118th Maifest - German Fun

The 118th Annual Maifest was held Mother's Day weekend and was a huge success. The most fun for guests at Ingleside is to be able to sit on the front porch and watch as the floats arrive and then start to fill with all of the wonderful costumed children. Then you get to watch the parade go right past your front row seat.

This year I had guests who came to Brenham for other reasons, not knowing about Maifest. They had such a good time that they booked their room for next Mother's Day weekend for two nights instead of one.

If you enjoy good German food, fun German music and costumes in all the colors of the rainbow, then next year you need to join us for the 119th Annual Maifest.

We are so proud of this small town tradition and would love for more non local people to have the chance to experience it. See you next year!!!

International Festival Institute at Round Top

There is no better way to spend a summer weekend than to visit the International Festival Institute in Round Top. This is a summer conservatory for musicians from all over the world. They come here to study and then perform for the public.

There are concerts on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening every weekend from June 7th until July 12th.

These concerts are held in the most incredibly beautiful building and the grounds and other building at the Institute are worth seeing.

We are so excited about all of the activities going on in and around Brenham this Summer.

Starting in May we have the Country Flavors Festival. It will be May 3rd from 10:00am to 5:00 pm. Come and enjoy a festival of food, beverages, shopping and other activities in the midst of live entertainment. Visitors are able to walk through more than 40 merchant locations. Arts and craft booths and various Children's activities wil be available. There is will be and ice cream smorgasboard with 30 flavors of Blue Bell. The Brenham Farmer's Market will also be open from 8:00am to 1:00pm. The Pilot Club is sponsoring a 5K Fun Run and 1 mile walk. Registration is $25.00, with last minute registration on race day at 6:45 am. Admission is Free.

Mother's Day weekend the 118th Maifest with be held in Brenham. There will be two parades, one Friday morning and one Saturday morning. There will be food and entertainment at Fireman's park, with a Coronation both nights.

June and July -- Cool Tunes on Hot Nights series kicks off with Abbey Rode on June 28th. July 5th is Big Otis, July 12th Vince Vance an the Valiants, Jerry Diaz and Hanna's Reef will play on July 19th and The Grooves finish off the series on July 26th. All concerts start at 6:30 on the Courthouse Square in Historic Downtown Brenham. Admission is Free

On June 20-21 Brenham will be celebrating its Sesquicentennnial. There will be a Gala, cultural and craft exhibits, good, old-fashioned games, a car show and live entertainment. Admission is Free.
