The succes of Sturmgeschutz III/40 design in anti-tank role clearly showed what was needed: a low silhouette vehicle with a 7.5cm or 8.8cm antitank gun with a closed combat compartment and heavy armour. The new vehicle was known as the neu Sturmgeschutz. A project was started to resolve some shortcomings found in the StuG assault gun, related to its use primarily in the anti-tank role. It was realised that such modifications of the StuG III, named neu Sturmgeschutz could not be easy and would not be made quickly, by which time a new design could be ready. The proposal for neu Sturmgeschutz made by Vomag AG was accepted. A new vehicle based on PzKpfw IV Ausf. F chassis named Jagdpanzer IV Sd Kfz 162 Ausf. F - armed with deadly 7.5cm Pak 39 L/48 AT gun. This booklet contains information about an improved version of Jagdpanzer IV Sd Kfz 162 Ausf. F - Panzer IV/70 manufactured by Vomag and Nibelungenwerke (Alkett design) and experimenal vehicles based on standarised Einheitsfahrzeuge chassis of PzKpfw III and PzKpfw IV tank.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Boulton Paul Aircraft

Boulton Paul Aircraft has been in the aircraft industry for over eighty years, and in that time has changed its name on three occasions. It began in 1915 as the aircraft department of Boulton & Paul Ltd, a well-established Norwich company, but in 1934 the aircraft department was sold off and became an independent company, Boulton Paul Aircraft Ltd, moving to Wolverhampton in 1936. In 1961 it merged with the Dowry Group to become Dowry Boulton Paul Ltd, beginning to trade as Dowty Aerospace Wolverhampton in 1991. Its former parent, Boulton & Paul Ltd, is actually 200 years old, and went through several name changes in ics own development. It was founded as an ironmongers in Cockey Lane, Norwich in 1797 by William Moore. Through the nineteenth century it became an ironmongers, woodworker and steel erector, with successive name changes as first William Staples Boulton and then John Joseph Dawson Paul became associated with the company. By 1914 it was a large diversified concern most widely known for its pre-fabricated wooden buildings, but also produced an astonishing array of products from cast-iron manure carts to motor-boat engines. In 1915 the Government awarded Boulton & Paul their first contract to build aircraft with an order for fifty No. FE. 2Bs, the first flying on 4rh October 1915. A total of 250 No were built, followed by 300 of the Rolls-Royce Eagle-powered FE. 2Ds.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Deutsche Nurflugel bis 1945

Am 14. August 1993 starb Dr. Reimar Horten in Villa General Belgrano/Argentinien im Alter von 78 Jahren an Herzversagen. Die Royal Aeronautical Society of Great Britain verlieh ihm als zweitem Deutschen (neben Hugo Ek-kener) die »British Gold Medal of Outstanding Achievements in Aeronautics«.

Heinkel He 177-277-274

Naval Fighters No.22 - North American AJ-1 Savage

The North American AJ "Savage" came into being as a direct result of the greatest Navy and Government controversy since Billy Mitchell and the Battleships. This controversy was over the future nuclear strike capability of the Navy, if any. At the end of World War Two the U. S. Army Air Corps controlled the few atomic bombs that existed and had the only means of delivering them, the B-29 Superfortress. In September 1947, the U. S. Air Force was formally established and sought to control the nation's nuclear strike capability totally. With this control the Air Force would assume the role of the primary military force in the United States. The Navy would be nothing more than a logistic support group in support of the Air Force. The most aggressive stance against the Air Force controlling the nuclear destiny of the nation came from RADM Daniel Gallery, Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (guided missiles), in a report dated 17 December 1947. Interservice rivalry being what it is, ADM Gallery of course believed the Navy could do the job better and outlined why in the "Gallery Memorandum." He argued that the current Air Force nuclear delivery platform, the B-29, lacked the range necessary to strike an overseas enemy from the United States. Furthermore, the long-range B-36 which was replacing the B-29 required fighter escorts which would have to use overseas bases. With these facts in mind, the Admiral proposed a new carrier and a new aircraft dedicated to the nuclear mission. In theory this aircraft would run in on the deck to avoid detection, thus eliminating the need for fighter escorts. What follows is the salient excerpts from his report.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Naval Fighters No.19 - Vought's F-8 Crusader Navy Fighter Squadrons

CONTROL PROCEDURES. The environment which surrounds the U.S. fighter pilot, i.e., over enemy territory, vectored against a superior enemy GCI system, SAM, and AAA threat, and an equally aggressive enemy fighter pilot, requires the ultimate coordination between the controller and the pilot. CAP aircraft must be given positive vectors to intercept the MiGs. The controller must assume aggressive, positive control and must endeavor to give a good set-up on the MiGs, specifically, put our CAP between 3 and 9 o'clock 1-3 miles aft of the MiGs. In order to prosecute the intercept with as little penetration as possible into the area of operations for our strike aircraft, the fighter must necessarily be vectored toward the enemy aircraft. However, to reduce the probability of allowing a second enemy fighter section to be vectored to the six o'clock position of friendly fighters and to enhance our capability of cutting the enemy off from sure retreat to the north of 19°, the intercept vector was delayed until such action will make these eventualities more certain. A second MiGCAP section under a separate controller could be used to guard the six o'clock of the first MiGCAP section by trailing at approximately five miles. Experience showed that controllers had difficulty in holding a second MiGCAP section in this optimum position and that usually the vector to intercept presented friendly fighters at the twelve o'clock of at least one section of enemy fighters even though the lead section of friendly fighters was able to gain an immediate offensive.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Hawker Hurricane

Designed by Sydney Camm in early 1935, the Hawker Hurricane was the first British fighter to achieve the, enormous for the time, speed of 500 ktn/h. The excellent performance of the prototype, which bore RAF serial K5083, resulted in the Air Ministry deciding to order the Hurricane as the principal RAF fighter. Almost at the same time that the prototype testing was nearing completion, an order for six hundred aircraft was made and production started, an unprecedented fact in peacetime. Such a rapid start-up of production lines was possible thanks to the foresight of Hawkers, who have previously prepared a production line and stored the necessary numbers of parts and sub-assemblies. The first production Hurricane was test-flown in mid-1937, and by December the first sixteen aircraft were delivered to 111 Squadron RAF, based at Northolt.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Russian-soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasua, Central Asia, and Afghanistan

Though little known, Russia's Caucasian campaigns from 1801 to 1864 constitute one of the most fascinating and instructive episodes in modern warfare. Pitted against the determined, resourceful Muslim tribes of the mountains and forests of the central Caucasus, Russia's military forces compiled a frustrating record that reflected many of the difficulties inherent in armed conflicts between Western-style, conventional armies and non-Western, unconventional forces in theaters lacking a highly developed transportation and communications infrastructure common to urbanized societies. Repeated Russian failures, the product of errors and the increasingly skillful leadership of the resistance, forced Russian military analysts to reexamine their approach. In the end, the conquest of the interior Caucasus depended upon the Russians' gradual recognition of the distinctive nature of their opponents and the local conditions, subsequent adaptations of their strategy and tactics in the face of intellectual and institutional inertia, and relentless and methodical prosecution of the war.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Battles of the Dark Ages - British Battlefields AD 410 to 1065

The Dark Ages were, in Neville Chamberlain's notorious words, 'a far away place about which we know little'. Yet they seem to have shadowed my life, partly in my imagination but also, unexpectedly, in everyday life. As a son of an officer in the RAF I had an itinerant boyhood moving from one place to the next every two years or so. And, it seemed, wherever I went there was a local battlefield, often one so remote in time and so poorly known that it was less an actual place and more of a kind of haunting, a historical shadow where folklore reigned over fact. This gave the Dark Ages a special appeal, a distant time when the land was wild and dangerous, where wolves and eagles hovered around the places of slaughter and when the very names of people and places sounded strange and foreign. At least to my ten-year-old mind it was a magical place unbothered by the boring bits of history like laws, charters and economics.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Immortal - A Military History of Iran and Its Armed Forces

THIS HISTORY OF IRAN’S ARMED FORCES at empts to illustrate some important truths that can be helpful in understanding the Iranian military’s potential role in the world in the coming century. Iran has not done well during the past two centuries in the box- score shorthand of wars that include the number of bat les lost, men killed and wounded, and equipment destroyed. Nonetheless, this book will show that Iranian men-at-arms, despite a modern history dominated by poor leadership, maltreatment, and a poverty of means, have demonstrated qualities that bear careful consideration by potential opponents. It would be a serious mistake to overlook the bravery and perseverance of Iranian soldiers or the costs they have imposed on their enemies by hard fighting, clever tactics, and the exploitation of Iran’s imposing geography. While i nal victory has often eluded them, Iran’s armed forces have enjoyed surprising tactical successes at home and abroad against their foes. This history also tries to provide background on the nationalist, tribal, and religious heritages that motivate Iranian military personnel at all ranks and that are necessary for comprehending Iran’s armed forces today and in the future.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Military Parade 07-08 1997

The new generation of Mig-AT trainer has a wonderful history. Let’s remind it to our readers. — Seven years ago, in late 1990, we spoke about such a plane at Mikoyan Design Bureau with Air Force Marshal A.Yefimov, at that time Air Force Commander-in-Chief. He asked us to consider the matter. An aircraft design tender was announced. Four design bureaus participated: Myasischev, Yakovlev, Sukhoi and the Mikoyan Design Bureau. It is worth mentioning that the Myasischev Design Bureau had never designed fighters in the past, while the Yakovlev Design Bureau had not worked with fighters for the past fifty years. The Sukhoi Bureau designers also had to pull out from the "game," because they could only offer a one-engine airplane project, while a two-engine airplane project was required by the tender. At last, only the Yakovlev Design Bureau and ourselves remained in the tender. When projects were discussed, P. Deinekin, the Air Force Commander-in-Chief, took a wise, I think, decision: not to sum up the tender results: the flights should prove the results. The planes—our MiG-AT and Yakovlev's Yak-130 — were being built. It was a friendly competition, and the MiG-AT proved to be a more comfortable and suitable plane for pilot flight practice and their combat training.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Sky Model No.20

Naval Fighters No.10 - North American FJ-2 Fury

As noted in Naval Fighters #7, the North American FJ-1 Fury ($5.50) was the forerunner of the famous F-86 series. Although the FJ-1 proved valuable in developing jet procedures aboard carriers, its performance was inadequate when compared with the XP-86 which flew ten months after the FJ-1. Because of the successful development of the swept-wing F-86, North American initiated project NA-181 for a navalised F-86, on 30 Jan. 1951. The proposal was tendered to the Navy on 6 Feb. 1951 and accepted on 10 Feb. Contract approval came on 29 May 1951 and the mockup inspection was conducted on the 26th through the 28th of June 1951. The skipper of the FJ-1 squadron VF-51, Commander Aurand, became the project officer. Three pre-production prototypes of the XFJ-2 were ordered by the Navy. Two aircraft (133754 and 133755) designated NA-179 were ordered on the 8th of March; the third (133756) designated NA-181 was ordered on 19 March 1951. These three aircraft were built at the Los Angeles plant, while the production aircraft were to be built at North American's Columbus factory.

Download (depositfiles.com)

P-51D Mustang

Few aircraft in the entire history of aviation achieved so much lame and so many favours as the American fighter, the P-5I Mustang. Historians and hobbyists usually consider the P-51D the best fighter of World War 2, and together with the B-17 Flying Fortress they are considered symbols of the American air force in the largest conflict of the modern age. The end of the Battle of France in 1940, found the Royal Air Force in a rather difficult position. British fighter squadrons had as their main equipment the Hawker Hurricane, the performance of which was not enough to meet the Bf 109E on equal terms. On the other hand, the Supermarine Spitfire, an excellent fighter of the RAF that could easily match the aggressor's aircraft, only equipped a few squadrons. The pressure the RAF exercised on the industry failed to bring the expected results. Despite intensive efforts, factories were unable to meet the demand. This difficult situation forced Britain to take a look at the aircraft manufactured in the USA.

Download (depositfiles.com)

US Special Operations Forces in the Cold War

As the Cold War grew even chillier after the Korean conflict (1950-53), the United States put even more emphasis on highly trained special operations forces to operate behind enemy lines should the Cold War turn hot, to train potential guerrillas within the Communist bloc, and to operate against Communist guerrillas attempting to topple democratic governments. The Vietnam War (1959-1975) particularly engendered the rapid expansion of special operations forces who could operate in Viet Cong 'safe areas' and gather intelligence or deny safe havens to the guerrillas. In the post-Vietnam era many of these special operations forces would evolve into counter-terrorist forces or other highly trained specialists in low-intensity conflict. In 1951, the Ranger units operating in Korea were deactivated and their personnel merged with other Infantry or airborne units. Later in that same year, the Ranger Department was activated so that the skills of the Rangers would remain within the U.S. Army. However, rather than training Ranger formations, the Ranger Department was charged with training officers and NCOs in Ranger skills so that they could perform their missions with conventional Infantn units more effectively.

Download (depositfiles.com)

The US Home Front 1941-45

The rapid fall of France to the German Blitzkrieg invasion of May-June 1940 shook but did not destroy the strong isolationist, even pacifist sentiment among the American public. Suddenly, Great Britain stood alone against Nazi Germany, and looked toward the United States for support - which was given, in the form of vitally needed supplies shipped on a "buy now, pay later'" basis. As early as 1939 patriotic and service organizations had begun to spring up across the United States in anticipation of the war spreading, and these efforts redoubled as the reports of the Battle of Britain and the bombing of British cities were reported by American radio correspondents into American homes. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was criticized by many as a war-monger for his patient efforts to carry the people with him in turning the United States into the "great arsenal of democracy" during 1940 and 1941; but at the stunning news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941 patriotic feeling soared in American society, and the United States became fully committed to the war against the dictatorships. Americans' willingness to carry out blackout and civil defense drills; to save everyday materials for recycling; to work longer hours, while having fewer consumer goods to buy with their salaries — all these demonstrated the nation's strong support for the war. There were more fundamental changes than these habits of thrift: World War II brought about a political, psychological and economic shift to the right in the United States.

Download (depositfiles.com)

The International Flag Book in Colour

The International Flat Book in Colour - which is here published in a fully up-to-date edition is the most comprehensive book on flags at a popular price available anywhere in the world today. It contains reproductions and descriptions of almost all National, State, naval and mercantile flags in use today of all the world's Sovereign States. Constituent States. Colonies, etc. In addition, there are numerous other currently recognized official flags (for Heads of State, etc.) and finally some older flags of historical interest -a total of about 700 different flags in all. The book also contains Coats of Arms for the States, etc., of all the world—a total of about 180. An explanatory text at the end of the book corresponds to each number on the colour plates. Numerous variations in flags, for which there was not sufficient room on the plates, are explained in the text.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Charge! These characteristics were as valid in the Napoleonic era as they are today. Cavalrymen in 1800 did not always have the protection of armour, as is enjoyed by modem tank troops, but they certainly had increased mobility compared with the infantryman. The power of their swords, and the brute force of a squadron of mounted men at speed, gave them the historical equivalent of the shock of the modern tank. The rules of the game today are that 'cavalry' may be used to take ground, but should not be expected to hold it on their own. The Battle of Borodino will give us an example of what happens to cavalry when it is given such an inappropriate task. To succeed at this defensive task today's 'cavalry' need the close support of infantry, artillery, engineers and air power. Ideally, cavalry should always be employed offensively and defensively in close integration with the other arms if the best is to be made of its potential. These principles applied also to the cavalry of 1792-1815.

Download (depositfiles.com)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://military-machine.blogspot.com/2009/11/charge-great-cavalry-charges-of.html' title='Charge! Japoński lekki krążownik MIKUMA( w 1937 r. ) uzbrojony w 15-cie dział kal. 155 mm.

Assault from the Sea - The Amphibious Landing at Inchon

This is the second study in the Naval Historical Center's monograph series, entitled "The U.S. Navy in the Modern World." The purpose of the series is to bring to the attention of today's naval personnel and other readers the contributions of the naval service to the nation, in war and peace, since 1945. During the Cold War, the Navy helped resist Communist aggression, deter nuclear and conventional attack on the United States, protect American trade at sea and ashore, strengthen regional alliances and foster the growth of democratic and free market institutions worldwide. The strength and overseas presence of the U.S. fleet often resolved crises without the use of force. But when force was necessary, the Navy fought hard and well. In light of the Navy's current emphasis on littoral operations, I believe that Assault from the Sea: The Amphibious Landing at Inchon, by Curtis A. Utz of our Contemporary History Branch, is an appropriate title for the series' second work. His monograph demonstrates how the Navy's veteran leadership, flexible organization, versatile ships and aircraft and great mobility gave the theater commander, General of the Army Douglas A. MacArthur, the ability to launch a devastating offensive against the North Korean invaders of South Korea.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Panzer Armee Afrika Tripoli to Tunis

With the Allied 'Torch' landings in November 1942 and the fall of Tripoli in January 1943, the position of the Axis forces in North Africa had become perilous. Rommel, commanding Panzer Armee Afrika, had been pressing with increasing urgency for the promised reinforcements of six or seven divisions and two heavy tank battalions with their 40 Tiger tanks and 40 Pz Kpfw IIIs. After his recall to Berlin in March 1943, during which he requested the evaluation of his remaining forces in Tunisia, Rommel was replaced in command on the 9th of the month by Von Arnim, who had formed the 5th Panzer Armee in December 1942 and who retained overall command of Armee Gruppe Afrika until the surrender of all Axis forces in Tunisia in May 1943. The reinforcements promised to Rommel never fully materialized. No more than five of the promised divisions (only two of which were top quality) were sent, while, of the Tiger units, the 501s. Pz. Abt. (Heavy Tank Battalion) started to arrive in Tunisia in late November 1942 but was not complete-there until January 1943. It never fought as a battalion, its two tank companies being separated one in the north and the other in the south of the country where they were destroyed piecemeal. The second Tiger battalion, 504s. Pz. Abt., was retained for the defence of Sicily, only one of its tank companies (No. 1) being sent to Tunisia in March 1943.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Panzers in The East (1) The Years of Aggression 1941-1943

In the autumn of 1940, following a series of regrettable political decisions, the world was plunged into a nearly global war. which was later named World War Two. None of the countries involved was really ready for the bloody slaughter. Nor did any of them have time to make necessary preparations. Of course, Germany's Third Reich faced this same predicament. The questionable decisions Hitler made in 1940 resulted in a German Army that was not strong enough and was equipped with outdated weapons. Within Das Heer (the Army), this problem was the most extreme in the Panzerwaffe, the armored shock force of the land army. Without armored units, all of Das Heer's efforts would be useless. But these all-important divisions suffered from a lack of trucks, good tanks and other vehicles, as well as powerful anti-tank guns. For example, the production of tanks in 1940 was 1,600 vehicles, only 600 tanks more than in 1939. Even worse was that many of the tanks were old models. The biggest problem, however, was the main armored personal carrier, the Sd.Kfz. 251, of which only 337 were produced. This was only 105 more than in the previous year! Each motorized infantry battalion in a Panzerdivision needed about 100 Hanomags. So. during the whole of 1940. Germany could arm only three out of about 80 battalions in about 20 armored divisions with these vehicles! Without this vehicle, a complete armored attack, typical of the Panzerwaffe's tactics on an open field, was almost impossible.

Download (depositfiles.com)

AFV News Vol.30 No.2

The article by Dick Harley in AFV NEWS Vol. 28, No.3 "Take Nothing For Granted" prompted me to put pen to paper with some further notes on the M3 Medium series in Australian service. A commonly held belief is that the M3 Mediums were shipped to Australia at the end of the North African campaign. Under closer examination, this seems to be most unlikely. The indications are that all the M3 Medium tanks for Australia were shipped directly from the USA, although the tanks formed part of orders from the British War Office on the US Government. During the second part of 1942, the M3 Medium formed a large portion of British tank strength in the Middle East, and it would seem most unlikely for tanks of this type to be removed from the Middle East at such an important time, especially as the Sherman series did not arrive in North Africa until August/September 1942. The delivery times of these vehicles to Australia is of interest: on 30 April, 1942, fifty-four M3 Mediums had arrived in country and by December 1942 a total of 757 M3 Mediums were in hand. Photographs of M3 Mediums on the wharves or in depots immediately after their arrival in Australia show them in a dark colour, most probably Khaki or Olive Drab, indicating the United States as their origin. Also, comments by Ordnance Personnel on receipt of the early shipments of M3 Mediums indicated very good packing and preservation material was used, and in fact many vehicles were carefully stripped, and the details of packing and preservation noted, so that these could be used in the future for the proposed shipment of tanks from Australia to overseas destinations. This would most probably refer to the proposal to send the newly formed 1st Australian Armoured Division to serve in the Middle East after it was equipped and trained.

Download (depositfiles.com)

Sky Model No.16
