Desktop Gone Forever
If you can do without the regular NT 4.0 desktop permanently, it's possible to start with just the Task Manager even without Command Prompt. Launch the Registry Editor and locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/ CurrentVersion/WinLogon. Double-click on value named Shell (set by default to Explorer.exe). Enter Taskmgr.exe for the NT Task Manager. For a command prompt, enter Cmd.exe. Close the Registry Editor and log off.

Using the Windows Task Manager
Windows Task Manager can aid you in finding the amount of RAM you can regain by disabling unnecessary system services. Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager from the context menu. You can view the CPU usage and memory usage under the Performance tab, To regain resources, you can kill unnecessary processes from the Processes tab.

Fast Menus
You can change the Start menu delay in displaying sub-menus. Run Regedit adn navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Control Panel\Desktop. Change the value for MenuShowDelay to any number between 0 (fastest) and 4000 (slowest). If the above does not exist, add a string value with this name.

Launch Faster
You can change the default boot delay of 30 seconds. Open Control Panel > System > Startup/Shutdown. Under the Show List For, change the settings to the desired boot delay value. To bypass the boot menu altogether, set the delay to 0. Note: If you dual boot between the Operating Systems using the NT boot loader, do not set the boot delay value to 0.

Messing with Partitions
Before using Disk Administrator to make changes to the partitions, you may want to make sure you save your current configuration. To do this, click Start > Programs > Administrator tools > Disk Administrator > Partition > Configuration > Save. Insert a formatted floppy disk into your drive and click OK. You can restore the partition structure later by clicking on Partition > Configuration > Restore.

Performance Monitor
The Performance Monitor will not monitor disk performance unless you turn on the disk counters first. to do this, open the Command Prompt window and type diskperf -Y. r\Restart the computer. you can monitor disk activity with the Performance, you should turn them off by typing diskperd -N at the Command Prompt when you have finished testing.

Restart the system for the changes to take effect. Now, at the Command Prompt window, type in the first few characters of the file or folders and press Tab to complete it automatically.

Saving Recent Desktop Settings

Permanently delete files
To permanently delete files without moving them to Recycle bin, hold down the Shift key while pressing delete. To stop using recycle bin altogether, right-click the Recycle Bin and click on Properties. On the Global Tab, select Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. If you enable configure drivers independently, you can set this up for the drivers you want.

System Configuration
Avery useful tool included with Windows is the System Configuration Utility. Select Start > Run and type 'msconfig' in the Open box to launch the application. The system Configuration utility makes fiddling with programs to launch at Startup or editing autoexec.bat, config.sys etc. a lot easier. To system Configuration Utility also allows you to crease a backup of your system files. It would be a good idea to use this before you begin making changed.

Optimizing the Windows 98 Registry
Windows 98 compresses the registry by default at restart if it fins that there is more than 500KB of empty space in the registry. this is controlled by the line Optimize=1 in the Scanreg.ini file in \Windows directory. To compress the registry manually: 1. Restart in MS-DOS mode. 2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type scanreg/backup. This will backup your registry. 3. Now type scanreg /opt. 4. Scanreg will compress the registry.

Preview Media Files
Internet Explorer allow previewing media files (wav, mid, avi, mov, mpg) in Windows Explorer. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to \Windows\Web, and open Folder.htt in Notepad. Look for wantMedia = false and replace this with wantMedia = true. you should now be able to preview media files in folders that you viewed as a web page.

Optimizing the Swap File
With most resource hungry applications today, the RAM is not enough to help all its data. Windows uses a portion of the hard disk as RAM, constantly swapping data between RAM and hard disk as required. The speed of your hard disk is nearly 1000 times slower than that of your main memory. Inefficient use of the swap file could considerable slow down your system to a very great extent. One of the best ways to speed up the swap file usage is to create a permanent swap file. In a permanent swap file, the file used for swapping information has a fixed size and location on your hard disk. When a temporary swap file is used, the location and size of the file is determined by application being used and is not predictable. Also, since a temporary swap file is constantly written to and is not fixed in size, it would be highly fragmented across the partition that holds it. A better option is to create the swap file on a dedicated partition on your hard disk. By doing this, the swap file will never be fragmented since that partition is only being utilized by the swap file itself. You can configure the swap file size and location from Control Panel > System > Performance > Virtual Memory. The size of the swap file should be around 2.5 times the amount of RAM on the system.

Dummy entries in Add/Remove Programs list
Sometimes, even after program are uninstalled, or due to the files being deleted instead of a uninstalled, the entry in the Add/Remove Programs list does not get deleted. To remove it form the list: 1. Start the Registry Editor. 2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Uninstall. 3. Delete the program entry here. You can also use TweakUI to do this.

Restart only Windows
When restarting Windows, you don't always need to go to thought the BIOS initialization and POST. Instead of simple clicking on Restart form the Shut Down Windows dialog box, help down the Shift key as you click on OK. This will restart only Windows. This is particularly useful when you change some registry entries or a few system settings.

Improve Removable Disk Drive Performance
Windows gives you the option to use write-behind caching to improve the performance of removable disk drivers. 1. Open control Panel > System > Performance and click on File System. 2. Check the Enable write-behind caching on all removable disk drives check box under the removable Disk tab and click OK. Note: If this result in a problem with disk operations, uncheck the Enable write-behind caching on all removable disk drives check box.

MS Office memory hoggers
A typical installation of MS Office installs Find Fast, an indexing utility that loads at startup. This hogs system resources by regularly indexing the entire hard disk(s). You can improve performance of your computer by removing Find Fast form your Startup folder. To reclaim the space used by the Find Fast index, open Control Panel > Find Fast, select your hard drives(s) and form the Index menu, click on Delete Index. when you've deleted your Index, click on Close and Stop form the Index menu. Another item installed in the Startup folder is named Microsoft Office. this does nothing apart from loading all MS Office libraries at startup to speed up launching of any Office applications. Since this is not necessary, you can delete this shortcut, too.

Stop Automatic Dialing
Many Internet applications or software are often set to automatically dialup and connect. To setup automatic dialing, open Control Panel > Internet Options. Under the Connections tab, enable Never dial a connection.

Automatic maintenance
The Windows Maintenance Wizard can automate a lot of routine system maintenance tasks. To open this wizard, choose Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Maintenance Wizard. It sets up the Task Scheduler to regularly run Scandisk, Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup.

Clean Desktop
To hide all the icons on your Desktop, open the Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft \Current Version\Policies\Explorer. Add a DWORD value and name it NoDesktop. Change it's value to 1. Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows.

ToolTips
To disable ToolTips in Windows, open the Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. Double-click UserPreferencemask and change its value to 3E 00 00 00. Chose the Registry Editor and restart Windows.

Speed to your modem - Yay!
Even if your modem if apparently working well, the baud rate of your COM Port might not allow you to reach top-speed. To improve your port's speed: 1. Click Start >Settings > Control Panel > System. 2. Click the Device Manager tab, and click on the "+" sign next to Ports (COM & LPT). 3. Select the port your modem uses, click Properties, then click the Port settings tab and set the Bits per second to 115200 bps. That way you won't have a sort of filter on the Port.

Associations in a jiffy
To associate files of a certain type with a different program, hold down the Shift key while right-clicking on a file of that type and click on Open With... from the context menu. Select the program you want to open files of this type with and enable Always use this program to open this type of file. Henceforth, the file will always open with this program when double-clicked.

Fix the color
When opening opened existing graphics in Photoshop, web designers would have noticed drastic color shifts. The new color management system used in Photoshop reinterprets files by default. If you work with Web graphics, you need to turn this feature off. Open File > Color Settings > Profile Setup. Uncheck RGB under the embed profiles. Under assumed profiles, select non form the RGB dropdown. Under profile Mismatch Handling, select Ignore.

Easter Egg
Hold down Ctrl and Alt on the keyboard and click on Help > About Photoshop. When the Strange cargo splash screen appears, type 'burp' and crate will open slightly with the Big electric Cat peeking out. Type the cat's name - 'Udo' - to hear him meow. Positioning Object in the Center
If you need to position an image in the center of the canvas, you don't need to calculate image parameters and reorganize the image accordingly. All you have to do is to cut the object and paste it back.

When the Scratch is Full
If you get a warning on the screen like 'You scratch disk is full', you can free up some space by saving the file. However, Photoshop may not let you save it. Create small file, say 3x3 pixels and save it in Photoshop format. Photoshop will flush the scratch and you will be able to save the file that you are working.

Make a logo stamp
If you have on image that you use over and over again, such as a logo or signature, you can make it into a brush, when you create custom brushes from image files, Photoshop saves the image on your Brushes palette. Select the image, click on the Menu arrow on the Brushes palette and select Define Brush. The image now appears on the Brushes palette. You can use it just like any other brush.

Save photo as Gifs
Photoshop has improved index color conversion, which allows higher quality 8-bit, 256-color conversions from 24-bit image. Although photographs are normally saved as Jpeg images, the improved color conversion makes it worthwhile to convert them to Gifs for Web use. This reduced file size while retaining image quality. To save an image as Gif, click on File > Export > GIF89a Export

3D Transform
The new 3D Transform plug-in lets you work with 2D images as if they were solid 3D objects, so you can adjust the perspective on an image from straight-on to various angles. click on Filter > Render > 3D Transform. Draw a wire-frame on your image.. Use the Pan Camera and Trackball tools to manipulate the image perspective and click OK.

Make it an Action item.
Actions automate routine tasks and save a lot of time, To create and Action, click on the Menu arrow on the Action palette and click on New Action. Click Record to start recording and carry out all the steps for the action. When you finish, click on the Stop button on the Action palette. To repeat the Action, select it and click on the Play button on the palette.

Make your images fit
The Fit image command resizes on image to fit within a given area without altering its aspect ratio. Click on File > Automate > Fit Image. Enter a new width or height and click Ok to resize the image.

Between the lines
If you want a line to appear above or below a paragraph, you can draw one using the Line tool. However, if the text is realigned, the line does not move with the text. PageMaker can set lines before and after a paragraph. Click on Type > Paragraph > Rules to open the Paragraph Rules dialog box. Select the appropriate choices for the rules above and below the paragraph and click OK.

Typographer's Quotes
To use typographer's quote, open File > Preferences > General > More. Enable use Typographer's Quotes. This works on the publication currently open. If you want it to work on all future publications, close any open publications and follow the same procedure.

New Styles
To quickly create new styles, select some text and format it with all the character and paragraph attributes for the style. On the style palette, double-click [No Style] and enter a name for the style. click OK to add this style.

The Rotating Object
To rotate an object using the Rotating tool, it is not necessary to use one of the object's handles. The object can be rotated from any center, within or outside the object area.

Tool Settings
To set a default setting for any of tool, select the tool and don't create anything with it. Instead, change the properties from the relevant menu items under the Element menu. All items created henceforth with that tool will use these settings

Minor Adjustments
To move objects by precise amounts, you don't need to draw guides. For a quicker solution, cut the object and click on Edit > Paste one copy, entering the offset as the distance you wish to shift the object by.

Wrap text around text
To wrap text around an existing text bloc, select the text block with the pointer tool and click on Element > Group. click on Element > Text Wrap and change the Wrap option. Now you can flow text around the grouped text block.. you can do the same with already flowed text.

Change Measurement Units
To change your measurement system, you can click File > Preferences > General and select the desired measurement unit. It would be faster, though, to right-click on either ruler and select the unit from the context menu.

Image Captions
If your images are supplemented with captions, place the image with text wrap turned off. Type or place the caption, again with text wrap turned off. Select picture and caption and click on Clement > Group. Now set the text wrap from Element > Text Wrap. On resizing the image, the text size will not change. You can still edit the text, just like any other text block. also, the image and caption will always move together.

Formatting tab leaders
Leaders adopt the formatting of the space before them, so you can not select the leader area and change its formatting attributed. You can, however, put a space before the leader and format that blank space. the leader will adopt the same formatting.

Working with Lines

Text Around a Graphic
To wrap a text around an image, select the image and click on Object ? Text Wrap. Click on either the Wrap Around Bounding Box or the Wrap Around Object Shape button on the Text Wrap palette.

Size of an Object
InDesign gives you the ability to measure on abject from the edge of it's stoke or from the center of it's stoke. The stroke weight always starts from the center of the stroke, because of which the object's size can be affected. To know the size of the object from it's actual stroke edge, enable Dimensions Include Stroke Weight form the Transform palette menu.

Format with Eyedropper
Use the eyedropper tool in InDesign to copy character, paragraph, fill and stroke attributes across text. This saves time and ensures consistency. By default, the eyedropper tool copies all attributes of a type selection, but you can specify the attributes to be copied. To change the settings, double-click the Eyedropper Tool. choose the desired options and click OK. To apply the formatting, select text you want to format using the Type tool, Select the Eyedropper tool and click the text you want to copy attributes from, The formatting is copied and the Eyedropper tool reverses direction and appears full to show that is has copied the attributes!

Shape Text
You can edit a text frame just as you would a graphics frame and have it take up the shape of virtually any shape on the document. use the selection or the Direct Selection tool to select the text box. Use the pen tool to add anchor points. You can manipulate these anchor points just a an image.

Other Font Characters
To insert special symbols into a document , say, for an end-of-story character, you don't need to use images; you can use fonts instead. Click on Type ? Insert Character to view all fonts and their character sets. Choose the font from the Font droplets, select the character you want to insert and click on insert

Easter Egg
In InDesign, hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and click Help > About. Instead of regular about screen, you can now see an InDesign component Screen that displays the Application Information, Requires Plug-ins and information about the install plug-ins

Converting to outlines
When printing documents, it is essential that all the fonts used reside on the system it is printed from. Small amounts of type in document may be converted to outlines to avoid font issues. However, you will no longer be able to edit these. To do so, select the text an click on Type ? Create Outlines

This step and repeat functions is very useful for creating precisely spaced duplicated of an object on a page. To duplicate or set of objects, select them and click on Edit ? Step and Repeat. Ser the horizontal and vertical distances to place the copies accordingly

Batch Processing
Converting images to GIFs or JPEGs in as a batch can save a lot of time when working with many images. You can save your preferred settings in a droplet and then apply it to any image or batch of images. To create a droplet, click on the Create droplet arrow on the Optimize palette. Save the file on the hard disk. To process a file or folders, drag them onto the droplet icon from an Explorer window. The droplet will create copies of the original files in the same folder

Image ready can become very slow when working with very large images. The program works best with only 72 dpi images. All other editing should be done with PhotoShop, resize to this resolution and then worked upon in ImageReady

Easter Egg
Hold down the Ctrl key and click on Help > About Adobe ImageReady to see the beta splash screen. You can also open this by holding down the Alt+Ctrl and clicking the logo on the toolbar.

More Ducks
Hold down the Alt key and click the logo at top of the toolbar. The picture becomes a duck. Open a new image with transparent background. Type the word "duckerboard" (without quotes). The checkerboard pattern is replaces with a duck pattern.

Using Multiple Views
You can use multiple views to compare images in various modes. Click on View > New View to create a new view. for example to view the image with browser dithering and a third to see how to the image would look on a Mac. Change the new views to Optimize the mode by selecting the tab on the image workspace.

Control Dithering
The dither Algorithm dropdown on the Optimize palette lets you choose a dithering method for the image. The Dither percentage slider lets you control the range of colors simulated by dithering. A higher dithering percent creates the appearance of more colors and more detail in an image, but can also increase the file size. for optimal compression, use the lowest percentage of application dither that provides the color detail you require.

Lights, Camera, Action
Use actions to automate repetitive tasks and save time. to create and Action, click on the Menu arrow on the Actions palette and click on New Action. Provide a name for the Action and click Record to start recording. Carry out the steps for the action if the sequence that they should occur. Click on the Sop button on the Actions palette to stop recording once you finish. To apply an Action, select it and click on the Play button on the Action palette.

Better Text Effects
When using antialiased text with a transparent background, define the Matte color to be the same as the background color you are using on HTML page. This avoids the appearance of a halo effect around the edge of the text. To specify Matte color, select the color form the Matte dropdown on the Optimize palette. You can also select either the Foreground or Background colors as the Matte color form here.

Web View
Click on File ? image info to enter the title of the output Web page. Click on File > HTML Background to set the background color of image that you want the image to appear on in the browser

Masking with type Outlines
You can cut an object within the shape of any other object the has a path. First, draw the shape that will be the mould for the other object. Now position the other object over this one and select both the objects. Click on Object > Masks > Make.

Changing Tool Pointer
You can change the appearance of the pointer from the tool pointer to a cross hair for more precise control. When the pointer is a cross hair, more of your artwork is visible. this is convenient for detailed drawing and editing. To make a drawing tool pointer appear as a cross hair, press the Caps Lock key before you begin drawing with the toll. To make this change permanent, open File > Preferences ? General/ Enable use Precise Cursor and click OK.

Draw Straight
When you draw or move objects, hold down the Shift key so as to affect it within a range of 45 degrees. this angle can be changed from File > Preferences > General. Enter the new Constrain Angle and click OK.

Scratch Disk
For best performance provide Illustrator with ample swap space on the hard disk where it can temporarily store information about the workspace, such as the image information, undo information, etc. this will ensure smooth functioning of the program, especially if you work with large, complex graphics. To change the location of the scratch disk, click on File > Preferences > Plug-ins & Scratch Disk.

View Print Colors
You can have Illustrator display colors on screen close to what they would look like when printed. Click on File > color Settings. Enable Simulate print colors on display. the colors will match more closely if the correct color profile is chosen for each device.

Easter Egg
In the lower left hand corner of the drawing area, Illustrator by default displays the current tool being used. You can click on it to view other items, such as the Date and Time, the amount of Free Memory and the Number of Undoes. If you hold down the Alt key while clicking on the drop-down, you can choose items like number of shopping days left till Christmas, a pair of eyes that follow your cursor, the number of mouse clicks, the moon phase among other things!

Custom Brushes
To use an object as a brush, select the object and click on the new brush icon on the brushes palette. On the new brush dialog box, select the kind of brush to create and click OK. Set the properties for the brush from the Brush Options dialog box and click OK to create the brush.

Artwork and Preview
You can view some items in Preview mode and other items in Artwork more simultaneously. Place the objects on separate layers. Double-click the layers you wish to see in Artwork mode and disable Preview from the layer Options dialog box.

Looking and Hiding
TO lock the hide items, by select the objects and click on Object > Lock or Object > Hide Selection. However, often it may be easier to lock or hide the items that are not selected. to do so, hold down the Alt key while clicking these menu items.

Text on Path
You can apply text around any object in Illustrator. First create the object around which you want the text to appear. Select the Path Type tool. To do so, hold down the mouse button on the Type tool until the options below it appear. Create in insertion point near the edge of the object and type the text

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
You may think you'll have to fork over a few twenties to get competent virus protection, but that's not necessarily the case. True to its name, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition keeps your computer safe from the Internet's latest hazards at no cost. Of course, the program lets you manually update its definitions at your leisure, but we recommend enabling the scheduling feature, which will check for updates every day at the time of your choice. Eventually, you might want to pay to upgrade to the Professional version, or you may decide to buy another antivirus suite altogether. Regardless, you should make downloading AVG Free a top priority as soon as your computer is connected to the Internet.

HijackThis
Anyone who's been in the ring with spyware knows some opponents just refuse to go down. If your arsenal of spyware-removal tools has failed to eighty-six a particularly devious intruder, this program could be one of your last hopes before reformatting. But unless you're a serious computer surgeon, you'll probably need to consult a Web-based forum to make sense of the program's scan results. (For more information, read our HijackThis tutorial.) Though you won't use it every day, sooner or later you'll be glad you have HijackThis.

Spybot - Search & Destroy
Like Ad-Aware, Spybot - Search & Destroy has played a prominent role in the history of the Great Spyware War. Also like Ad-Aware, it's completely free. Spybot, however, boasts a number of convenient extras, such as a full-fledged scheduler and a file shredder. It's also no slouch when it comes to sniffing out malicious software. We should note that when it comes to antispyware utilities, you can never have too many, so you may want to load up on a few more freebies, including Microsoft AntiSpyware and Spyware Doctor.

Webroot Spy Sweeper
The bad news is that Spy Sweeper isn't free. The good news is that it's worth every penny of the $30 registration fee. Spy Sweeper's real-time protection shield is one of its major advantages, alerting you when unwelcome guests attempt to clandestinely infiltrate your machine. The program's scanner is fast, and results are nearly flawless, thanks to Webroot's top-notch research-and-development team. Even though we recommend you keep multiple antispyware solutions close at hand, Spy Sweeper is powerful enough to act as a standalone solution.

ZoneAlarm
A firewall should be one of the very first programs you put on your machine. If you don't already know, a firewall is absolutely essential in preventing hackers and other cyberthreats from accessing your PC. Unfortunately, many of them can be tough to configure, baffling even seasoned geeks. Not so for ZoneAlarm, one of the most trusted firewall utilities on the scene. The program walks you through the set-up process, offers several levels of security, and doesn't overload you with a bunch of highly technical jargon. Just set it and forget it, and you'll sleep well at night.

Though the vast majority of average users will never need the PDF-creation tools of Adobe Acrobat Professional, just about everyone will want to have Acrobat Reader on hand. Though this stalwart isn't exactly exciting, it should be a required download for every person who owns a computer. By default, Web browsers log information about what sites you've been visiting via cookies and temporary Internet files. Needless to say, such information can be potentially embarrassing if you share your PC with other users. Although you can manually wipe away these tracks by digging into your browser of choice, Asmw Eraser Pro offers a more convenient way to clean the slate. The program removes your fingerprints from a number of popular applications and deletes potentially incriminating files so they can't be recovered. You can even schedule Asmw Eraser Pro to continuously clean up after you in the background.

BCArchive
You may not be an international person of mystery, but chances are you have a few secrets you'd like to keep. That's where encryption utilities come into play. BCArchive provides all the essentials in an easy-to-use package. The program lets you lock down files according to a number of secure algorithms and can create self-decrypting archives so you can share sensitive data with others, even if they don't have BCArchive on their machines.

ChoiceMail Free
Due to antispam legislation, unsolicited e-mail isn't as big of a problem as it was a few years ago. Still, spam is prevalent, and it's just as annoying as ever. If you're using Outlook Express as your primary e-mail client, make sure to get your hands on ChoiceMail Free, which blocks spam with a challenge/response methodology. NoteTab Light
Windows' built-in text editor could be the poster child for the phrase bare bones. Notepad works fine for the simplest text-editing chores, but most users will appreciate the additional functionality found in NoteTab Light. Tabs let you easily access multiple text documents from one interface, and the program even provides templates and macros for writing basic lines of HTML. NoteTab Light also provides more editing tools than Notepad, and since the program is free and comes in a tiny package, there's no reason not to keep it around.

RoboForm
No one would argue that the Internet has made everyday tasks--such as paying bills, shopping, and banking--unbelievably convenient. The downside is that many users find themselves buried under a mountain of half-remembered logins, passwords, and credit card numbers. If this describes you, you'll certainly appreciate RoboForm, a tool that automatically fills in Web-based forms for you. Since the program encrypts your data, you won't need to fret about security. You can even use RoboForm to generate passwords hackers will never guess. You'll lose some of the application's functionality unless you register after 30 days, but even if you don't buy it RoboForm will generate passwords and store 10 logins, making it worth the download.

Installing and uninstalling loads of software can leave your machine's registry a mess and lead to decreased system performance. To combat this problem, many habitual downloaders turn to TweakNow RegCleaner, a simple app that takes a no-nonsense approach to Registry optimization. The program lets you know which junk and invalid keys are safe to delete, but you should still use the built-in Registry backup tool before wiping away problems. We always make sure to run this speedy little number at least once a week, and we suggest you do the same.

Like the aforementioned Adobe Acrobat Reader, WinZip may not be flashy, but it's one of those programs you won't want to go without for very long. Not only does the program prove capable of transforming large batches of files into a much smaller archive, it also boasts extras such as encryption and virus checking. Most notably, WinZip's ease of use can't be beat; even Luddites will quickly get up to speed, thanks to the inclusion of multiple wizards.

FastStone Image Viewer
Programs such as Photoshop offer a full-fledged workshop for editing and creating images, but they're too powerful, complicated, and expensive for casual photographers. True to its name, this intuitive program does indeed let you view your pics, but it also does much more. For starters, it can convert and rename images in batches--a handy, timesaving feature. It also provides a decent set of basic editing tools, including those for cropping, rotating, removing red-eye, and adjusting brightness, color, and contrast. FastStone Image Viewer can even display your photos as a slide show, complete with your favorite songs. There's a lot to like here, and nothing to pay.

iTunes
Just because Windows Media Player came installed on your PC doesn't mean you should skip Apple's much-loved jukebox. This looker lives up to all the hype, with an exquisite design and a laundry list of features, including multiple EQ presets, visualizations, and CD ripping. iTunes also is a necessity if you plan to patronize Apple's megapopular online music store. If you've never used the program, you might want to take a look at Download.com's iTunes Advanced feature, which provides basic tips along with advice for more seasoned folks.

Nero 7 Ultra Edition
Nero is one of the best-known names in disc-burning software, and once you take a look at this comprehensive suite of tools, you'll know why. Nero 6 Ultra Edition goes far beyond the standard CD- and-DVD-burning formula, packing in features such as the ability to watch and record TV, a cover-creation utility, audio-mixing and audio-editing tools, and a file converter. At $80, Nero Ultra is the most expensive of our 20 essential programs, but we think you'll agree it's a fine investment.

Skype
E-mail and instant messages are certainly efficient communication tools, but some complain they lack the personal touch of traditional mediums such as the telephone. Skype combines the best of both worlds, allowing you to place free PC-to-PC voice calls around the world via VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology. Of course, to use the service you'll have to plunk down a few bucks for a microphone, and any call recipients will need to install Skype, too. Also, you'll need to sign up for a paid service if you intend to call a landline or cellular phones. VoIP may not have reached critical mass yet, but this is one technology that's on the way up.

Trillian
Anyone who's into instant messaging--and that would cover a large portion of the industrialized world--knows that having a bunch of chat clients running simultaneously can take a toll on system performance. The beauty of Trillian is it lets you talk to your Yahoo, AIM, MSN, and ICQ buddies in one interface. If you already have a username and a buddy list on one of those services, the program can quickly import that data. If you've never had an IM account, Trillian can help you set one up with very little hassle. Stop fooling with multiple windows, usernames, and passwords; Trillian embodies the spirit of one-stop shopping.

Typing DOS commands on the Windows Command Line prompt is a most efficient and faster way of doing things in Windows XP. Here's a run-down of the most useful DOS commands available in Windows XP. Some of these DOS commands even do not have an visual alternative.

DOS Command-line tools must be run at the prompt of the Cmd.exe command interpreter. To open Command Prompt, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

ipconfig - Windows IP configuration
Useful for troubleshooting your internet connection. Displays the current IP address of your computer and the DNS server address. If you call your ISP for reporting a bad internet connection, he will probably ask you to run ipconfig.

fc - Free BeyondCompare in XP
FC is an advanced DOS Command that compares two files and displays the differences between them. Though the file comparison results are not as interactive as BeyondCompare or Altova DiffDog, fc is still very useful. You can even set fc to resynchronize the files after finding a mismatch.

type - open text files sans Notepad
Similar to Unix cat command, Type is my favorite DOS command for displaying the contents of a text files without modifying them. When used in combination with more switch, type splits the contents of lengthy text files into multiple pages. Avoid using the type command with binary files or you'll hear alien PC beeps and see some greek characters on your PC.

ping - Say hello to another computer
Ping network command followed by the web-address or IP address tells you about the health of the connection and whether the other party is responding to your handshake request. Ping tool can also be used to convert the web address to a physical IP address.

tree - visual directory structure
You often need to take prints of your physical directory structure but XP has no simple "visual" commands for printing directory contents. Here, try the Tree DOS command and redirect the output to a text file.

tree > mydirectory.txt
print mydirectory.txt

attrib - make hidden files visible
Attrib lets you change attributes of System files and even hidden files. This is great for troubleshooting Windows XP. Say your XP doesn't boot ever since you edited that startup boot.ini file (Hidden), use attrib to remove the Hidden attibute and edit the file using EDIT dos command.

assoc - which program will open that .xyz file
The assoc DOS command can be used to either isplay or even modify the file name extension associations. The command assoc .htm will quickly tell you the name of your default web browser (see picture)

move - more flexible than copy-paste
Say you got a lot of XLS and DOC files in you MyDocuments folder and want to move only those XLS files that have their name ending with 2006. In XP Explorer, you have to manually select each file and then cut-paste to another folder. However, the DOS move command make things much simpler. Just type the following at the command prompt:
move *2006.xls c:\2006Reports\

find - advanced file search with filter
Find is the most powerful DOS command and even more useful than the Windows Desktop Search tool or the Windows Find Wizard. The find command searches for a specific string of text in a file or files. After searching the specified file or files, find displays any lines of text that contain the specified string.

To search your hard disk to find and display the file names on drive C: that contain the string "Google" use the pipe (|) to direct the results of a dir command to find as follows:
dir c:\ /s /b | find "Google"

Quick tip - Drag to avoid typing: When your command acts on a file or folder, you must type the path to that folder after the command. You can save typing time by dragging the file or folder from Windows Explorer into the command window.

To view help at the command-line, at the command prompt, type the following:
CommandName /?

How to: speed up your wireless internet connection on Windows XP

If you have a slow wireless internet connection that often crashes, then there’s probably something wrong with it. (Duh!) Here are some tips and tricks to fix some of the most common wireless problems on Windows XP. Before you start “fixing” anything, make sure your wireless connection isn’t already at it’s best.

1. Move the wireless router to a better location

The first thing you want to do is to make sure your wireless router is in the best location possible. If you have a laptop that you move around all the time or if you have several computers, the router should be in the centre of your home and office. Don’t hide it into cupboards, or under chairs and tables.

But if you only have one stationary computer, use a cable connection to the router or move the router as close to the computer as possible.

You can check the signal strength from the Wireless connection menu, accessible from Start -> Connect To -> Wireless Connection. You can also access it by clicking the wireless icon at the bottom right corner of the screen if you are connected.

2. Upgrade the wireless router firmware

Sometimes the problem is with the router firmware. Make sure you update your router firmware as often as possible to avoid incompatibility with newer systems. You can update your router firmware from the wireless router control panel. Type your router’s IP address into the browser to access the CP.

The default IP of routers is normally 192.168.1.1 for Linksys, 192.168.0.1 for D-Link and Netgear, some US Robotics routers use 192.168.123.254 and some SMC routers have 192.168.2.1. The router’s default IP address is always in the documentation of the router.

3. Change the wireless broadcast channel

If there are several wireless networks in your area, they can begin to distract each other. Most routers use the wireless channel 6 by default and the channel can slow down if full of signals coming from many routers. You can change the wireless channel from the Wireless Control Panel.

If changing the channel didn’t speed up your wireless connection, change it back to 6. It’s better not to play with them too much because this can distract your firewall.

4. Update your computer’s wireless network drivers

You can search for driver updates from the Windows Update site or your manufacturers website.

How to: Make 4 fake computer viruses!

Disclaimer: Everything here is for informational purposes only.

Why not have some fun and prank your friends? There are several kinds of fake virus messages you can make. I will discuss 4 of them:

1. Fake error message

This one is by far, the easiest one to make and all you have to do is to make a new text document with notepad, type msg * YOUR MESSAGE and save asanything.bat. As always, make sure that you select All files instead of Text Document.

2. Forced shutdown

This will display a custom error message and start a countdown which will shut down the computer.

Right-click your desktop and create a new shortcut.
Paste the following code into the Location box in the Create Shortcutmenu:
shutdown -s -t 30 -c “Your message here“

Replace 30 with the length of the countdown you want (in seconds) and place your custom error message between the quotes. Click next and name the shortcut to something the victim would be likely to click on such as “Internet explorer” or “My Documents”, etc.

Next you’d want to change the icon. Right-click on the shortcut you made and click properties. Find the Change Icon button and click it. Choose a suitable icon for the name you chose earlier.

And that’s all! Now you just have to sneak the shortcut onto the victim’s desktop and run!

Note: to stop it, open Run from the start menu and type shutdown-a.

3. Endless Command prompt windows

This will open up a series of command prompt windows that will never end.
The basic idea is that there are two .bat files that open the other one when opened, so the other one opens the first one again and the windows just won’t stop coming.

How to do this:
1. Fire up notepad and type: start 2.bat
2. Save it as 1.bat (make sure you choose all files when saving it)
3. Make another new text document and type: start 1.bat
4. Save it as 2.bat into the same folder as the other one.

All you have to do to start it is to click on either of them.

The only way to stop it is to wait for the windows to become so numerous that they are a group on the taskbar. Then you can use Close group to get rid of the bastards.

4. Fake Command prompt viruses

These are also a good way to make the victim believe that a worm is gnawing at their hard drive and that they can’t do anything to stop it.

Open up notepad and type @echo off

To make text appear, type it after an echo tag.
To have the the commands wait for the user to press any key type pause

(Note: if you write pause >nul it won’t display Press Any key to continue…)

To have a complete high-speed description of files in the drive of the .bat file, type dir /s
You can also initiate any other command we covered earlier, such as shutdown, error message, etc.

And why no include all of these in one fake virus?

Have a damaged CD or DVD that your computer can’t read? - Recover Disk can help you out. It doesn’t matter if the disk is scratched, microwaved or just incorrectly written.

To be honest, I didn’t try the microwave experiment and I recommend you don’t as well. To relieve your curiosity and save you from a harmful dose of radiation, the picture on the right shows you what a CD looks like after a bit of “cooking”.

With Portable Apps and Firefox, you can surf the web without leaving any trace on the computer you are using. If you want extra security, install a Firefox security plugin such as FoxyProxy. To iput Firefox onto the drive, just copy-paste the Firefox folder from you computer, or install Firefox onto the thumb drive.

Set a program to run automatically (autorun)

Using autorun, you can set a program to start up automatically when you connect the drive to a computer. You can also use the same script for a data CD-ROM. Note that some computers have autorun disabled for security purposes. [Here's how to disable autorun.]

Open up notepad and paste the following script:

[autorun]
ShellExecute=filename
Label=description
UseAutoPlay=1

Make sure you replace filename with the full path to the file. For example, a file called program.exe in a folder called “programs” on the thumb drive would be /programs/program.exe

Replace description with a short description of the program, for example, My Jukebox or Mozilla Firefox.

Save the file as autorun.inf, making sure you select “All Programs” from the save menu, not “Text document”!

Help! I’m lost!

Ever lost a USB drive? Even if you haven’t, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll lose a few during your life. And with all the important information on it, it could be a disaster to have it fall into someone’s hands.

A good idea is to encrypt all the information on the drive, but you would still want it back, wouldn’t you? Luckily, the folks at the Daily Cup Of Tech have come up with a solution.

Save a program called “Help! I’m Lost!” on the drive, that a finder just can’t get around opening. The program opens a message box with your personal “I’m lost” message. It’s a good idea to offer the finder a bigger reward than the drive itself, so that they’ll be interested in contacting you.

Hide the drive inside something

Why not surprise your friends and co-workers by sticking something that looks like a broken USB cable into the computer’s USB drive?

You’ll be sure to get a few shocked faces when you start to play a movie from it.

Secure your PC

Just like with an RFID badge, you can use a USB drive to lock and unlock a PC. Insert it to begin working and pull it out when you’ve finished, locking the computer. There are several programs for this . Rohos, a commercial program and WiKID, a semi-open source one.

If you really need to secure your computer with a USB drive, I suggest you give Rohos a try, as WiKID is rather complicated.

Portable jukebox

Don’t just carry the music with you, also carry the player! You can install audio programs such as WinAmp and CoolPlayer+ on your thumb drive. Just unextract the ZIP folders to the USB drive.

If you want the jukebox to start up automatically when you connect the memory stick to the computer, use the autorun feature shown tip 3 and point it to the exe of your audio player.

Encrypt your data

If you carry any sensitive indormation on your USB memory stick, a good idea is to encrypt it. Hardware-level encryption will help, but it will cost extra. You can get a free program to encrypt your data just as securely. For this I recommendTrueCrypt, but most others will also do.

You will need admin access on the computer you want to use your encrypted thumb drive on, so this it’s usability a little.

Run a standalone OS for dedicated tasks

The easiest OS to boot from a USB drive is probably Linux. There are many small capacity Linux versions out there that will fit on your drive. The best 3 are Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux and Webconverger.

Make sure you select a version that needs less space than your USB drive’s maximum, so you have room for files and software.

And this leads us nicely to the final tip…

Run Windows itself from a USB thumb drive
Modifying Windows to work on a USB drive is quite difficult, but luckily there are some tools that will do it for us. Note that you will need a separate Windows license for this, as Microsoft only lets you use one for each single computer, and a USB drive is treated by them like a computer…

What you’ll need:

A licensed copy of Windows
A USB device, min. 1GB (We recommend a USB hard disk, as a flash memory stick will become unusable after 100000 writing processes. Assuming that only 2 processes are used per second, the drive will last only 60 days with 8 hours of work each day… A hard disk doesn’t have this problem.)

If you use more than one computer then Foxmarks might become handy as it keeps your bookmarks and passwords (optionally) synchronized.

Adblock Plus
This is a must-have add-on for Firefox. Many sites have annoying flash ads in them. Not anymore - Adblock plus blocks them all!

Sxipper
Tired of filling in various web forms and all the spam you get on your e-mail? This add-on automatically fills in registration forms and creates fake e-mails which forward to your e-mail. If you get too much spam from one of the fake e-mail you just cancel forwarding. Simple as that!

Greasemonkey

If you want to make your browsing more comfortable then this comes handy as you can use all the user made scripts. The largest script database is at Userscripts.

FireFTP
Don’t want to install an extra program for FTP? Download this add-on and you gain FTP access to servers from your browser.

ChatZilla
Another useful add-on with which you can chat on IRC networks and you don’t have to install a separate program!

Make your Folders Private

•Open My Computer
•Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C:), unless you have more than one drive on your computer).
•If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.
•Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
•Double-click your user folder.
•Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
•On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.
