As of last week,<a href="http://www.2news.tv/news/35767489.html"> the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl had only sold approximately 24 tickets</a>, and that is not a misprint. The only reason it's approximate is that Maryland had to estimate its 16 tickets sold, while the University of Nevada knew it had sold exactly eight.<br /><br />This is the bowl game integrity that the BCS system is trying to protect, right? If college football went to a playoff system, what would the family of eight from Nevada do during the holidays?<br /><br />We'll avoid going off on a tangent about a college football playoff system, but let's try to figure out why the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl is struggling to sell tickets. Sure, it doesn't help having Boise State actually get invited to another bowl as it has this season, but why wouldn't you want to attend this game. This is how <a href="http://www.humanitarianbowl.org/">officials are trying to sell the game</a>:<br /><br /><blockquote>“The University of Nevada and the University of Maryland have two of the strongest football traditions in the nation,” said Kevin McDonald, executive director of the bowl. “Our fans should be in for a treat as both these teams have great athletes.<br /><br />“This match-up will showcase college football’s most innovative and experienced coaches in the nation in Chris Ault and Ralph Friedgen,” said Kelly Rhinehart, president of Roady’s Truck Stops.</blockquote><br /><br />Even if that was remotely true, we still wouldn't visit Boise, ID. We aren't saying it's not an incredible place to visit, but we just checked the weather and it's currently 20 degrees. No thanks.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5189865371224978798-1624237636626514071?l=www.thesportspoint.net'/></div>The Sports Pointnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189865371224978798.post-58347518944879211412008-12-17T11:52:00.002-05:002008-12-20T00:48:03.630-05:00The Sports Show, Episode 2<embed src="http://blip.tv/play/AwGP8S4" width="260" height="220" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed><br /><br />Here's another installment from our friends at <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">Sports Blog TV</span>. According to the <span style="font-style: italic;">Associated Press</span>:<br /><br /><blockquote>The lawsuit accuses him of hitting and slapping her in the face, shaking and kicking her, and battering her twice when she was pregnant with Giles' child.</blockquote><br /><br />Coincidentally, the alleged battery was occurring during the same time period of Giles' most productive seasons at the plate. From 1999-2002, he hit more than 35 HRs each year, while his other 10 seasons in MLB failed to produce anything more than 23 HRs in a single season. Apparently his agent, Mark Rodgers, has a <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081201&amp;content_id=3696729&amp;vkey=hotstove2008&amp;fext=.jsp">deal in place with the Houston Astros</a> pending a physical.<br /><br />We understand that Hampton had a great three years with the Astros, but that was 10 years ago and he has shown nothing since. Ask Atlanta what type of return it received after inheriting his 8-year, $120 million contract in year three from Colorado.<br /><br />These prices,<br /><br /><table border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="2"><tbody><tr><td style="font-style: italic;">2003</td><td style="font-style: italic;">Atlanta Braves</td><td style="font-style: italic;" align="right">$13,625,000</td></tr> <tr><td style="font-style: italic;">2004</td><td style="font-style: italic;">Atlanta Braves</td><td style="font-style: italic;" align="right">$14,625,000</td></tr> <tr><td style="font-style: italic;">2005</td><td style="font-style: italic;">Atlanta Braves</td><td style="font-style: italic;" align="right">$15,125,000</td></tr> <tr><td style="font-style: italic;">2006</td><td style="font-style: italic;">Atlanta Braves</td><td style="font-style: italic;" align="right">$14,503,543</td></tr> <tr><td style="font-style: italic;">2007</td><td style="font-style: italic;">Atlanta Braves</td><td style="font-style: italic;" align="right">$14,500,000</td></tr> <tr><td style="font-style: italic;">2008</td><td style="font-style: italic;">Atlanta Braves</td><td style="font-style: italic;" align="right">$15,975,184</td></tr></tbody></table><br />Have yielded an average of 14.2 starts, 5.8 wins, 4 losses, and 85 innings per year during his six seasons for the Braves. And it couldn't have excited Atlanta fans too much when Hampton's final month of his contract was the only healthy month during his final three seasons. At least we can finally say we are getting some offseason movement.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5189865371224978798-2943848496708570800?l=www.thesportspoint.net'/></div>The Sports Pointnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189865371224978798.post-61443811829239889562008-12-02T08:27:00.003-05:002008-12-02T08:40:30.202-05:00Tuesday Blog Podge: Facebook Can Make You Famous<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2hUK7D5qk_I/STU6x6edpTI/AAAAAAAABt4/RRzg948LpVE/s1600-h/louise_glover_image_5_big.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 287px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2hUK7D5qk_I/STU6x6edpTI/AAAAAAAABt4/RRzg948LpVE/s400/louise_glover_image_5_big.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275187167719433522" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Send us any links to stories or pics that you think might be a good addition to our daily Blog Podge post to </span><a style="font-style: italic;" href="mailto:thesportspoint@gmail.com">thesportspoint@gmail.com</a><span style="font-style: italic;">.<br /><br />Louise Glover via <a href="http://www.hollywoodtuna.com/?p=3736">Hollywood Tuna</a>.<br /></span><br />Have you always wanted to get on TV? Well, we can't really help you out there, but wearing your schools scent might create some nostalgia. Penn State is one of two schools currently available from the <a href="https://masik.com/universities">Masik Collegiate Fragrances </a>collection. We've never been to Penn State's campus, so we aren't quite sure what it would smell like. We're thinking something like our grandparents' old house. After all, JoePa is Penn State, right?<br /><br />This is how the cologne is described:<br /><br /><blockquote>Penn State for Men conveys a classic and refined style. The fragrance exudes Penn State blue and signifies masculinity, passion and honor. The fragrance opens with the freshness of Italian bergamot and chilled gimlet accord. The middle note combines the coolness of blue cypress with the subtle spice of cracked pepper vapor. The base notes end with a deep black amber and cool moss. A new classic for the proud Penn State man.</blockquote>Maybe Masik could use <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPJ2ZcHWSy8">this video</a> to give consumers an idea of what the fragrance embodies.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.philly.com/philly/wires/ap/news/state/pennsylvania/20081130_ap_perfumecolognecapturescentofpennstate.html">Perfume, cologne capture scent of Penn State</a> (Philly.com)<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5189865371224978798-6382907665949573679?l=www.thesportspoint.net'/></div>The Sports Pointnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189865371224978798.post-37300040692004530602008-12-01T08:05:00.003-05:002008-12-01T08:20:15.456-05:00Monday Blog Podge: Gameday Signs and a WAG Calendar<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2hUK7D5qk_I/STPkh89EMKI/AAAAAAAABto/wzTJPNn0jQc/s1600-h/bianca_gascoigne_04.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2hUK7D5qk_I/STPkh89EMKI/AAAAAAAABto/wzTJPNn0jQc/s400/bianca_gascoigne_04.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274810860530053282" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Send us any links to stories or pics that you think might be a good addition to our daily Blog Podge post to </span><a style="font-style: italic;" href="mailto:thesportspoint@gmail.com">thesportspoint@gmail.com</a><span style="font-style: italic;">.<br /><br />Bianca Gascoigne via <a href="http://saltymilk.com/nggallery/post/wake-up-with-bianca-gascoigne/page/907">Salty Milk</a>.<br /></span><br />Lenny Dykstra has an obsession with Twizzlers. You have to give the man credit for his confidence but not much can be said for his intelligence or use of tact. For those that aren't familiar with the rivalry, the Tigers had beaten Alabama six straight times before being blown out 36-0 and Tubberville was predicting the seventh. Ironically, Auburn left Tuscaloosa with its seventh loss of the year instead.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5189865371224978798-1737461605561183154?l=www.thesportspoint.net'/></div>The Sports Pointnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189865371224978798.post-32963731913306635442008-11-28T14:22:00.005-05:002008-11-28T14:53:32.388-05:00Gator Fans Wear Jean Shorts, Right?<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2hUK7D5qk_I/STBL_nLII0I/AAAAAAAABtQ/v6YCjCs4yOM/s1600-h/gator+fans+and+jorts.jpeg">o<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 350px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2hUK7D5qk_I/STBL_nLII0I/AAAAAAAABtQ/v6YCjCs4yOM/s400/gator+fans+and+jorts.jpeg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273798719870346050" border="0" /></a><br />As the college football regular season winds down, no team has been adored by the media like the Florida Gators. While they have looked as talented as anyone in the country, we still think they are very beatable. With Florida State and then Alabama in the SEC Championship, the Gators will have its work cut out.<br /><br />Just in case this two game stretch isn't enough to bring Florida fans down to Earth, maybe a history of their association with jean shorts, or jorts, will do the trick. <a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/orl-sportsfbcjorts28112808nov28,0,5362682.story">The <span style="font-style: italic;">Orlando Sentinel</span> revisited the origin of the insult</a> that has become the favorite amongst Florida's rival fans. However, the early season does provide us with some high-profile non-conference games in these tip off tournaments. While we haven't been able to watch the entire top 25 play, there have been three teams that we feel could be around in late March. Keep in mind that it's not necessary to bring up the Tarheels, who are playing at a higher level than anyone else.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 102, 0);">Notre Dame</span> - This seems to be an obvious selection after beating 7th ranked Texas, but there we're not sure how many people actually think that the Irish are legit. They've been such an up and down team the last five years, but this team has a great starting five and the chemistry seems to be there early on. The Irish rely on the three but have enough shooters to avoid an off night, led by the confident Tory Jackson. Hopefully, North Carolina won't make us regret our opinion tonight.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(153, 0, 0);">Oklahoma</span> - Blake Griffin has been a beast through four games, averaging 26 ppg and just under 20 rpg. He's been unstoppable on both ends of the floor, while his brother, Taylor, has quietly been contributing as well. The Sooners play solid defense and wouldn't be a surprise to win the Big 12 this season.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Syracuse</span> - The Orange took home the CBE Classic Championship Tuesday defeating 18th-ranked Florida and defending-champion Kansas on back-to-back nights. They've done so behind the superb play of sophomore Jonny Flynn, who had 25 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals in the win over the Jayhawks. This squad has looked unselfish thus far, and might just be a better team without Donte Green, who was a first round NBA selection after just one season in college.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5189865371224978798-1909586579198070435?l=www.thesportspoint.net'/></div>The Sports Pointnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5189865371224978798.post-27251436252571085202008-11-26T08:11:00.003-05:002008-11-26T08:30:37.610-05:00Wednesday Blog Podge: Food Network Chicks and Coach Struck By Player<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2hUK7D5qk_I/SS1PTHnQGQI/AAAAAAAABtA/jqtG11VqK0Q/s1600-h/sarah_rae_01.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2hUK7D5qk_I/SS1PTHnQGQI/AAAAAAAABtA/jqtG11VqK0Q/s400/sarah_rae_01.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272957928600508674" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Send us any links to stories or pics that you think might be a good addition to our daily Blog Podge post to </span><a style="font-style: italic;" href="mailto:thesportspoint@gmail.com">thesportspoint@gmail.com</a><span style="font-style: italic;">.<br /><br />Sorry for the lack of posts lately, we have been real busy at the 'ol 9-5.
