"Social Justice through Arts & Culture" Award

On Saturday February 21st, 2009

A landmark day at the "Youth can Move the World Symposium"

Marcelino Frost DaCosta & Ground illusionz received the Award for "Social Justice Through arts and culture", which was presented by the one and only, Mayor of Mississauga, Hazel MaCallion! Congratulations to the Ground illusionz crew!

The award created by Sheridan student Kyle Lane represents a high level of acknowledgment towards GI by the City of Mississauga and its Community leaders, as well as an example of inspiration for future generations. Youth across the GTA can have the confidence to know that a group of youth and young adults expressing themselves through Hip-Hop culture can really make a difference sharing with their community,

as long as you never give up.

Along with receiving this important award, the Ground Illusionz also performed a great Saturday morning piece, to liven up the audience of 300 hundred young leadership students and future Mississauga contributors. This showcase presentation was the event opener to a series of inspirational seminars lead by current Mississauga community leaders, including one popular workshop lead my Marcelino Frost DaCosta & Gi entitled, "Social justice through Hip-Hop".

Frost Awarded "Absolute Canadian B-Boy" for 2008

"Absolute Canadian B-boy"

On Dec 6th 2008, at the Canadian Floor Masters 25th Anniversary celebration, FrostFlow from GI was given the annual "Absolute Canadian B-Boy" award.

This award is annually distributed at "Cypher North" by the Stephen "Buddha" Leafloor, front man of the Canada's Oldest B-Boy crew the Canadian Floor Masters.

Frost has been recognized for representing in the Canadian scene for 10 years as not only a competitive dancer with winning titles, but more so for his community work and strong dedication in passing on knowledge. During the award introduction, Buddha had credited Frost with the rebuilding of the Ground illusionz crew and commitment to "inspiring B-Boys with Passion and Pride as to 'Why we do what we do."

"Cypher North Champion"

At the Same event, Frost also became Champion of the 3 on 3 Crew battle! The battle was won as "1ne Unit Blue Print", alongside his comrades representing: GI & MEC union (1ne Unit Tribe), Conscious Soles Collective, Unity & BluePrintForLife.

The Sheridan crowd erupted and roared! as the Mississauga heros took over the stage and delivered one of the most powerful performances of the evening! filled with character, dynamics and raw talent. Representing with a new generation of members who stole the show, the Ground Illusionz awed the crowd and threw-down not only a headline special guest showcase but in an encore performance as well! GI would like to thank the Sherdian Student Union for the support and to Mark Wlodarski for the photos!

BMO "Reaching For Rainbows"

On Nov 14th, The Ground Illusionz Crew threw-down an exclusive choreographed performance for the BMO audience at Old Mill Inn. The Gala night dinner and showcase was a fundraiser for the Charity "reaching for rainbows". The event was a success, congrats to all those who made a financial contribution the event.

"My Games" Mississauga Youth Games

G.I. members Yumi, Dust, Frost, Fate, Volume & Mad Matt performed and taught during the 3rd Annual Mississauga Youth games!

The Ground illusionz conducted performances and workshops for over 100 children on Sunday Oct 21st @ T.L. Kennedy S.S. in Mississauga. The Children witnessed the freedom of positive expression through freestyle dance circles known as cyphers. They also had the opportunity to learn some basics with members of Mississauga's legendary crew.

A special thank you to Matt De Philipis and Louroz Mercader for their work and allowing GI to be part of this event.

Frost Flow: Active Mississauga Cover

Congrats to Frost Flow for being the first b-boy on the cover of Mississauga's community activity program. The Parks & Rec book has been delivered to every home in Mississauga and will remain in circulation during this year.

Special thanks to Neil Rodman, Teresa Bodinado, KC Armstrong and the city for their decision to have Frost Flow represent the city.

City Dance Corps: Talent Defined

St Joseph's CSS: Host Bboy Class

After a summer full of competitions, performances & showcases, the Ground Illusionz have started a new set of teaching initiatives!

With over 75 students who were interested in learning to break this semester, St. Joseph Catholic secondary school in Mississauga decided to host a b-boy culture class every Tuesday from 2:30P - 4:00P. The school has historically had a large population of dancers and has been holt to past GI performances.

Some of the first members of the Ground Illusionz attended St. Joes were they started dancing in 1997!

Ground Illusionz: Competes In NYC

Frost Flow & Fresh FX in the Quarter finals at "Rukus In Da Forgotten Boro". The jam took place on Staten Island in New York, New York on Aug 16, 2008. They made it to the top 4 out of 24 crews which entered from across the states.

Twelve Step also of the Ground Illusionz Crew was invited to the event for an exhibition battle. Congratulations to him for representing Toronto in NYC!
