Proposed activity includes: carving a large head out of polystyrene, laboriously painting a replica of a pizza shop artwork, rejection-relieving paper object-making, and weird world animation, plus a full blown DIY blockbuster featuring lots of Donald Trump. Details of individual artists’ projects below.

The residency programme will culminate with a weekend exhibition showcasing work from all the artists involved.
Preview Thursday 25th September 6-8pm
26th - 28th September 2008 (12-7pm each day)

7th July – 13th July
Freya
It is said that God created the world in 7 days. Freya will attempt to create her own world with same amount of time but with the added advantage of chocolate for fuel. Viewers will be able to observe the painstaking but knowingly futile process of reproduction. At the end of the residency the audience will be invited to compare the original mural with the artists imitation.

18th – 31st August
Steven Morant
Steven’s residency will be concerned with the manner in which sky-scraper sculptures, such as the Great Sphinx, demonstrate the timeless appeal of architectural sculpture. How did carvers on one side of the Great Sphinx’s nose make their work exactly reflect the work on the other? During the residency, it is hoped to test theories about such questions through the six-fold enlargement of a life-size head. Afterwards, when cast, the enlarged head will allow children to shelter inside it.

1st – 14th September
Roman Alaska Worlds Enterprises
Co-founders Laurence Collyer and Richard Lewis will use the two weeks in 42 to develop and present their ‘DIY Blockbuster Group Show’ including an exhibition by artists and musicians of portraits of Donald Trump and the Planets; a bric-a-brac shop made by Roman Alaska World Enterprises displaying homemade submissions of all kinds, and performances in 42 on Sat 6th September + a satellite event at The Brudenell Social Club on Friday 5th. Inspired by the enduring relevance and timeless qualities of Shakespeare’s plays, this exhibition takes as its starting point the intriguing relationship between eyewitness account and fiction.

Two specially commissioned works by contemporary artists are displayed alongside photographs and documentation from the infamous Cottingley Fairies story, forming an investigation of ideas such as ‘evidence’ and ‘proof’ in art’s attempt to enrich everyday life.

The photographs taken by Yorkshire girls Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright are now nearly 100 years old but time hasn’t eroded the impact of their playfulness. In 1917, it seemed as if the whole world was taken in by their photographs of fairies in Cottingley Beck, which were lent further authority by the patronage of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The exhibition will display five photographic prints of the Cottingley Fairies alongside drawings and writings by Frances and Elsie. Interviews with the pair nearly 60 years after the original fairy-furore in a spellbinding documentary made for Yorkshire Television’s Calendar News programme in 1973 will also be shown.

'Distant Relatives' is a newly commissioned photographic series made to accompany Opera North’s production of Macbeth. Artist Giuseppe Lambertino travelled to the far reaches of Scotland to document actual sites relating to the real 11th century Scottish king, who may or may not have been the inspiration for Shakespeare’s play.

'Love Capital' accompanies Roméo et Juliette and displays the results of artists Eva Rowson and Yvonne Carmichael’s trip around locations in Verona associated with the world’s most famous lovers. The installation will present their souvenirs with an artist’s book exploring the commercial opportunities created by Romeo and Juliet’s tragic but everlasting love.

Saturday 3 May Parent and Child Art Activity
Create your own legendary creature at 42 New Briggate Gallery on Mayday weekend with community artist Tim Curtis. Inspired by the bright lights and style of Italian shopping boulevards, the window scene interrupts reality with rubber plants, colour saturation, speed and chickens.

Commissioned to accompany Opera North’s brand new The Adventures of Pinocchio, Super Fast Chickens is by no means a sweet fairytale; a hint of the dark side noticeably creeps in.

The Adventures of Pinocchio is composed by Jonathan Dove who says “For a long time, I have thought that the tale of Pinocchio would make a marvellous opera, one that appeals to the whole family…Marionette-dances, fairground rides, assassins giving chase; terrifying men and a captivating girl; crime and punishment, remorse and reconciliation”.

Hannah Bolland and Edward Mortimer are West Yorkshire based artists. They both have individual art practices that use found objects, assemblages and installation. Edward describes his work as humorous or sinister, kitsch, ugly, absurd, aesthetically pleasing or just unusual. Hannah’s work focuses on childhood and play, shrines and ritual, seasons, cycles, life and death. In 2005 they received grants from the Arts Council England and Esmée Fairburn Foundation to create a new work, ‘The Magical Realm of Light’ for South Square Gallery in Bradford.

This commission marks a new stage in the development of 42 New Briggate Gallery, which will support artists from the north of England. It is the first work to be made specifically for the gallery in response to an opera.

Email: enquiries@42newbriggate.co.uk42 New Briggatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12207205484812454678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5167566530448590364.post-12353946893059031952007-12-17T17:20:00.001Z2007-12-17T18:21:54.945ZImages of Residency Exhibition

42 New Briggatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12207205484812454678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5167566530448590364.post-72892798152585894322007-12-07T13:08:00.000Z2007-12-12T11:17:10.240ZInvitation to join us for a one-off evening exhibition. To conclude our series of window residencies at 42 New Briggate Gallery we will be hosting an evening event from 6-8pm on THURSDAY 13TH DECEMBER.

The artists involved have undertaken a variety of projects - from working with homeless people in Leeds to locking themselves up in the 42 ZOO (as seen on Look North - come on Thursday to see the recording....).

Please join us to celebrate the work of the artists and to get into the festive spirit, 42 style!

Artists involved in the residencies are:

Jennifer Ohlson
A Latento (Alex Farrar, Harry Meadley and Iona Smith)
Patrick Gildersleeves
Andy Abbott

See here for more details.

COMING SOON: FRIDAY 21ST DECEMBER - OPENING OF SUPER FAST CHICKENS.
see here for more details42 New Briggatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12207205484812454678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5167566530448590364.post-55989803788472377562007-11-13T12:00:00.000Z2007-11-14T10:36:42.612ZResidency Line UpFrom Wednesday 14th November 42 New Briggate will be hosting a brand new series of residencies.

Artists were invited to put forward proposals for how they would use the gallery space to make work that is visible in or through the gallery’s large front window.

Email: enquiries@42newbriggate.co.uk42 New Briggatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12207205484812454678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5167566530448590364.post-51861850936860383172007-10-28T10:07:00.000Z2007-11-14T09:49:07.901ZResidency Opportunity @ 42 New Briggate Gallery 42 New Briggate Gallery is inviting proposals from artists or artists groups to utilise the front gallery space for a week of experimenting, making and creating. Each student had a digital camera and was asked to choose one image at the end of the day which summed up their activities. All sorts of creative endeavour was employed - from stalking passers-by, to finding houses parent's lived in as students, to retracing first steps in the city, to re-visiting old halls of residences, and even going home to Bradford and back in 2 1/2 hours.

Green tea and critical feedback session:

The students with Dinu:

42 New Briggatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12207205484812454678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5167566530448590364.post-81513791382741065372007-10-12T15:02:00.000+01:002007-09-27T22:33:25.181+01:00Light Night: Chronicle of a Dream ForetoldDinu Li's film 'Chronicle of a Dream Foretold' will be showing in the gallery for Celebrate Leeds 07 Light Night, October 12th 2007

Looped screening from 7pm – 11pm
(Film duration 20min 30sec and will start on the hour and half past the hour through the night)

Chronicle of a Dream Foretold is a video work made by Dinu Li during a residency in Kazakhstan for the Central Asian Project. It blurs the boundaries between documentary and fantasy. Inspired by Jean-Luc Goddard’s 1960’s film of The Rolling Stones’ rehearsing their song Sympathy for the Devil it shows a Kazakh rock band as they rehearse their latest song ‘Dreams’. This is combined with scenes such as footage of young men training to become equestrians, the flickering of images from a television set, time lapse footage of light passing through a snow covered landscape and montages of still photographs.

Central Asian Project is a collaborative exchange organised by Cornerhouse (Manchester), SPACE (London), and AsiaArt+ (Almaty, Kazakhstan) dedicated to forging new links between the UK and Central Asia.

‘Chronicle of a Dream Foretold’ will be screened only on Light Night at 42 New Briggate, Leeds. Through a series of colour photographs Li charts her journey from China to England.

This artistic collaboration between mother and son uses recollections of memories that were told to Dinu and together they have attempted to photograph the exact sites of her stories in China, Hong Kong and Northern England. In this exhibition at 42 New Briggate Dinu’s photographs are displayed as prints, whilst being accompanied by his mother’s personal family archive.

The exhibition links in with Opera North’s first new production of Madama Butterfly in almost a decade, which opens at Leeds Grand Theatre on 15 September. Set to Puccini’s poignant score, this touching story of innocent love crushed amidst the mutual incomprehension of two utterly different cultures, resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.

About the artist:
Dinu Li is a UK based artist, born in Hong Kong and living in Manchester. Its curious that in Leeds, a city which wants to ‘be big on’ every conceivable subject, artists have a track record of working with great success on the miniature-scale. Locker and doll’s-house galleries including Lawrence Molloy’s ‘A Delicate
Matter’ and Harry Meadley’s 1032 have provided the inspiration for this show of small works which will act as a round-up of the last couple of months activity in our similarly dinky gallery space.

Works have been acquired through an open submission and invitation format with loosely stipulated size restrictions. Over 25 artist’s work will be accommodated into the gallery in various media ranging from postage-stamp painting to multiple edition bagged sculpture and food for the smallest of appetites. Many of the works will be available for purchase providing a rare opportunity to own some exhibits for those small of pocket. Refreshments provided on the night will be in keeping with the diminutive theme.

The Artists

1. With moving images from artists such as Bob Levene, Esther Johnson, Josh Whitaker, and Andy Abbott there will be something for every attention span and interest.

Kulture Cine Club Show reel: 5 – 6pm every evening

As part of this exhibition kultur Cine club will be presenting some of their favourite shorts. Kultur Cine Club is a film exhibition and audience development organisation set up in Oct 2006. They deliver their own events and offer programming and consultancy services for arts and cultural events, film festivals and cinemas in the UK and worldwide. This video is the closing chapter in a work where remains of the destruction caused during the Battle of Verdun were formed in to large-scale bullets. The bullets were then destroyed utilising hand-crafted baseball bats so the rubble of the battlefield once again returned to its demolished state. The piece explores the cyclical nature of man; the destruction of the work becoming its own completion.

Bryony Pritchard and Yvonne Carmichael: Bus Dancing by Numbers was a collaborative performance enacted at various bus stops around Leeds. Bryony and Yvonne had developed a series of dance-moves corresponding to the numbers that indicate the bus routes and chose a few sunny days to put them into practice in public. This video documentation also operates as a family-friendly party game.

Josh Whitaker: A series of famous and lesser-known clips taken from film and television are edited together, creating a surreal amalgamation that gradually appears to take one particular direction. In this film Josh demonstrates how the stuff of our image-saturated everyday lives can be altered and find meaning in new contexts.

Victoria Lucas: Through metaphorical representations, the medium of video is used to present the transitory nature of life and notions of mortality. Objects, places, and moments that celebrate life are examined, reinforcing the ephemeral nature of existence against the passage of time.

Andy Abbott: ‘The Canal-Church of Ratty’ is Andy’s exercise in the dual détournement of the serene glow felt at the end of a regular bike-ride along the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath and the Zen undertones of Wind in The Willows. Footage shot near Silsden by Andy and an audio book of Grahame’s children’s slacker classic have been processed to convey what a jolly life it is to live by the river and to work indoors at a computer for most of the day.

Rachel Jesse: Documentation of the destruction of Rachel Jesse’s installation, Graph Paper Ruined my Mind (2007) which was exhibited at 42 New Briggate Gallery in July 2007. After laboriously removing the negative space from 18 sheets of graph-paper with a scalpel Rachel sanctioned curators Yvonne and Vicky’s destruction of these skeletal sheets, thus reversing hours worth of time and patience employed by the artist during the making of the work.

Rose Butler: Butler creates films that form relationships between the context of the moving image and sound to the actual framing and manipulation of film itself. Box represents the movement of birds heard throughout the film, through edited flickering motions.

Esther Johnson: Tune In follows the fascinating world of amateur radio operators, better known as HAMS. Dealing with the politics of space and social communication, this portrait blends documentary and abstract audio to reflect the world of HAM radio and the use of DIY equipment in an ever-changing modern world.

Joe Gilmore and Paul Emery: Clut is a collaboration documenting a series of experiments using an analogue and digital feedback system. The system consists of a digital 3D model displayed on a monitor which is in turn being captured by a video camera whose input is then textured back onto the surface of the 3D model.

Your Arms!: This film documents the ‘Bring us Your Arms Bradford’ participatory event which happened as part of 2007’s STIR festival. The Your Arms! project intends to link communities affected by present changes in industry and production through the exchange of picture-books made by groups and individuals. In this instance passers-by contributed to a collaborative ‘Book of Bradford’. Further info about the project can be found at www.yorkshirebiella.blogspot.com

Greg Kurcewitz: Three-dimensional imagery is created through the manipulation of the moving image captured on film. The distortion of film creates a seemingly living organism, the sounds of birds creating a suspension of disbelieve within the viewer that enables them to be part of the illusion depicted.

Thanks to Lumen for their support.

Macunicate is an independent enterprise based in Leeds (UK), specialising in film marketing and promotion, exhibition and audience development.

Kultur Cine Club is the film exhibition and audience development arm set up in Oct 2006, delivering its own events and offering programming and consultancy services for arts and cultural events, film festivals and cinemas in the UK and worldwide.

Macunicate offers marketing, PR and consultancy services for independent film production, sales and distribution companies, willing to reach new markets, taking an unique approach to each project and working to create effective marketing campaigns, develop effective release strategies and facilitate entry in international markets. These performances consist of Claire escorting a ball of tumbleweed around the city whilst wearing different outfits and employing assorted tumbleweed-animating techniques.

Maps will be displayed in the gallery to show where the walks are going to take place, and the performances will be relayed into 42 on five separate monitors. Viewers are invited to make suggestions as to the attire Claire should wear, the method she should use to guide the tumbleweed and the destination of her fifth and final day at the late night opening event 6-8pm Friday 24th August.

Dave Ronalds’ hole-punch drawings reference some kind of architectural mapping, but the ambiguity as to whether they are plans of rooms or buildings, maps of streets and towns, or whether they mark territories dividing countries is intentional.

Dave’s drawings can be read as critical exercises in the way in which we listlessly navigate the all-to-familiar city, but they also hint at how we can reconnect with the city through a shift in perspective.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes to the editors:

Claire Blundell Jones graduated with a Fine Art degree from Wimbledon School of Art in 2004.
