KIOWA COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Because of the move to the Courthouse, during July, the Kiowa Co. Health Dept. will not have Open clinic days on Tuesdays. Please call ahead to make appointments for any services you need during July.

GREENSBURG RECREATION COMMISSION
· 8-man Tackle Football: 3rd – 6th grades, Meeting July 6th at County Meeting trailer.
· Youth Basketball Camp: Kindergarten – 5th grade. July 6th – 8th. Greensburg Gym. $10 fee.
· Back to School Swimming: Going to Rock River Rapids in Derby. $8 per child. 9:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
· Youth Football Camp: 2nd – 6th grades. July 21st – 23rd. $10 fee. Greensburg Football Field.

COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE OFFERS LICENSES
The Kiowa County Clerk’s Office is now able to issue Hunting and Fishing licenses. Additionally, they can process boat registrations and renewals.

Subsequently, the Courthouse offices are scheduled to be closed July 13th – 17th to move into the new offices of the courthouse.

STARS OF HOPE
On June 3rd, the Greensburg 4-Hers picked up the Stars of Hope signs throughout Greensburg and began placing them in the Livestock Pavilion on the new fairgrounds in accordance with the New York Says Thank You plans.

With the help of some volunteers, the 4-Hers were able to place 96 of the original 220 stars in the barn. If you have picked up a star for safe keeping, could you please return it to the Kiowa County Extension Office as we would like to place all of the stars in the pavilion.

KIOWA COUNTY FAIR
The Kiowa County Fair Board has scheduled the 2009 4-H and Free Fair for July 27th – 29th. The 4-H Style Review and King/Queen contest will be on Tuesday, July 21st. The Horse Show will be held on Saturday, July 25.

Watch for more details as the fair gets closer! Fair Books will be available soon.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
The First United Methodist Church in Greensburg is planning “Crocodile Dock”, the 2009 Vacation Bible School program. All children ages 3 – 5th grade (having just completed) are invited to participate in the program.

The VBS program will be held on July 13 – 17 from 6:30 - 8:45 p.m. Please contact Mary Mayhew at 620-723-3338 to sign-up for the program.

The Greensburg Farmers Market is back. The market intends to attract vendors from the local area offering fresh produce, baked goods, and other specialty items. Come down to Davis Park each Saturday until September 26th from 8 – 11 a.m.!

GREENTOWN TOURS OFFERED
Summer Tour Schedule for GreenTours:
Monday – Friday: 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Tours last an hour and cost $5 per person, with a $10 minimum. This would be a great activity for your out-of-town company. Call if you have questions 620-723-2790.

The Kiowa County Master Gardeners will be hosting Plant Problem Clinics the last Saturday of each month at the Farmer’s Market. The June clinic will be June 27th!

The Master Gardeners will be available to help diagnose problems with turf, vegetables, trees and fruit production. Bring down your horticulture questions and get help from trained gardeners.

KIOWA COUNTY UNITED GROUND BREAKING
The Kiowa County United Building will be breaking ground for the new facility on Saturday, May 23rd at 11 a.m. The location of the facility will be at 100 South Main Street.

GREEENSBURG ALUMNI PICNIC
The GHS Alumni Picnic will be at noon, on May 23rd, at Davis Park. All GHS Alums who sign in at the registration table, will be given a ticket to present to Tina & Jay White, at their concession stand - and their lunch will be paid for by an anonymous GHS Alum. PEOPLES BANK GROUNDBREAKING
The Peoples Bank will have a Groundbreaking Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 29th, at 102 S. Oak St. (building site). Following the groundbreaking, we will have a COMMUNITY BBQ from 11-1 at The Peoples Bank temporary bank location (303 E. Kansas Ave.)

WHEAT PLOT TOUR
The Kiowa County Wheat Plot Tour is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th and will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the test plot site. The plot is located 1 mile east and ½ mile south of Haviland. The tour is being sponsored by Kiowa County Extension and the Farmers Coop of Haviland.

Kent Martin, K-State Research and Extension Agronomist will be present to discuss the test varieties.

THE BIGGEST LOSER, SEASON 2
The Lighthouse Worship Center will begin their second season of “The Biggest Loser” on Wednesday, May 13th. Anyone within our community is welcome to participate. The weight-loss program will run from May 13th through July 29th. Weekly weigh-ins will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.

PLANET GREEN TV SERIES ON DVD
You can buy the DVD set of the first season of Planet Green's "Greensburg" series at the GreenTown office. The 4-disc set containing the 13 episodes of the show retails for $45.

GREENTOWN OFFICE NEWS
GreenTown is the drop-off site for unwanted cell phones; these will be donated to domestic violence programs. You may also recycle small batteries and portable electronics.

Residents who have not yet received their free e-cloths can pick these up at the office. The company who donated these cleaning kits call the cloths a "revolutionary way to clean" using only water. You can check out their website at www.e-cloth.com.

The GreenTown store is open Monday through Friday from 10-5. On Saturday, May 23 there will be special business hours to accommodate folks coming in for Memorial Day weekend; we will be open after the parade until 4 p.m. For more information please call the office at 723-2790.

COMMUNITY GARDENS
A community gardens area has been established for residents of Greensburg who do not have space for a garden. There are garden plots (15’x15’) available on a first come basis. The plots are $10.00 each. The ground will be worked and ready for planting. Water will be provided. Call the Extension Office for your garden plot at 620-723-2156.

FARMERS MARKET
The Greensburg Farmers Market is back! The market intends to attract vendors from the local area offering fresh produce, baked goods, and other specialty items.

We are looking for vendors. Vendors are responsible for bringing their own display tables and collecting their own sales tax. Each seller agrees to pay $5 for their booth space for doing business at the Market. If you have something to sell, please contact the Kiowa County Extension Office at 723-2156.

If you are a consumer who is looking to support local food production, here is a great opportunity! Show your neighbors that you are interested in eating locally, saving on gasoline, and keeping the local economy healthy.

WHEAT PLOT TOUR
The Kiowa County Wheat Plot Tour is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th. The plot is located 1 mile east and ½ mile south of Haviland. The tour is being sponsored by Kiowa County Extension and the Farmers Coop of Haviland.

A community gardens area has been established for residents of Greensburg who do not have space for a garden. There are garden plots (15’x15’) available on a first come basis. The plots are $10.00 each. The ground will be worked and ready for planting. Water will be provided. Call the Extension Office for your garden plot at 620-723-2156.

FARMERS MARKET
The Greensburg Farmers Market is back! The market intends to attract vendors from the local area offering fresh produce, baked goods, and other specialty items.

We are looking for vendors. Vendors are responsible for bringing their own display tables and collecting their own sales tax. Each seller agrees to pay $5 for their booth space for doing business at the Market. If you have something to sell, please contact the Kiowa County Extension Office at 723-2156.

Congressman Jerry Moran will visit Kiowa County this week during his annual Listening Tour. Moran is visiting communities in each of the 69 counties of the First Congressional District.

Moran will be in Greensburg at 547 Arts Center, 204 W. Wisconsin, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, May 2, 2009, for his Kiowa County Town Hall tour stop. Area residents are invited to attend.

ARBORETUM TO BE ESTABLISHED
The Kiowa County Commission has agreed to establish the Kiowa County Arboretum on the new Fairgrounds. The trees to be planted in the arboretum have been selected by the Greensburg Tree Board in conjunction with the Kansas Forest Service. The Arboretum will be planted along the walking path that was proposed in the design of the new fairgrounds in the Long Term Recovery Plan.

The Greensburg Tree Board and the Kiowa County Master Gardeners along with 14 students from Fort Hays State University will begin planting the first 80 trees at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 24th. The planting will be finished on Saturday, April 25th. We are asking anyone interested in helping to meet at the fairgrounds.

TRACTOR SAFETY TRAINING
The Kiowa County Extension is co-hosting 2 Tractor Safety Trainings for youth 13 to 15 years of age. The training will be held on May 2 at Dodge City Community College.

The City of Greensburg is in the process of a sewer lining project in the city limits. Periodically, you may notice an odor when the crew is in your neighborhood. This odor is not harmful. The New York Says Thank You Foundation is coming to Greensburg on September 4th - 7th to help rebuild the 14,000 square foot 4-H Livestock Pavilion on the new fairgrounds. Local residents are asked to come work side-by-side the 300 volunteers coming from around the country for the Old Fashion Barn raising.

The newsletter will be published by Greenlight Printing, owned by Rebecca and Joe Kilduff, a new print shop that is moving to Kiowa County. The print shop is planning to be housed in the Business Incubator in Greensburg as soon as it is completed.

HISTORY OF RODEO COMES TO GREENSBURG
The Rodeo Clown Reunion that will be in Dodge City for Dodge City Days will make a trip to Greensburg on Friday, August 1st. At 10 a.m. the clowns ranging in age from 50 to 99 will be at the Triangle Rodeo Grounds to present the Kiowa County Library with the books they have collected in a Book Drive. They will also sign autographs.
Come out and meet:
· ‘Toad’ Cook - a rodeo clown from 1970 to 1983. ‘Toad’ originates from Big Rapids, Michigan and has faught bulls from coast to coast and in Canada.
· Dixie Reger Mosley – the only woman bull fighter. Dixie hales from Amarillo, Texas and performed for 13 years. She was instrumental in the development of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. Dixie began her rodeo career at 5 ½ years of age and is now a member of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and the Rodeo Historical Society Hall of Fame.
· Wayne Cornish from Enid, Oklahoma also got an early start to his rodeo career at the age of 8 or 9. He performed for some 22 years as a barrelman and Roman rider. He was the barrelman in the 1960s television series, Stoney Burke, about a rodeo cowboy. Wayne’s barrel is in the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

CANDIDATE FORUM
Residents of Kiowa County are invited to attend a “Meet the Candidate” forum night to be held at the Greenleaf Ranch on Tuesday, July 29th at 7:00 p.m. Come hear what the candidates have to say and visit over cake and ice cream. Please bring your own lawn chairs to the event.

The newsletter will be published by Greenlight Printing, owned by Rebecca and Joe Kilduff, a new print shop that is moving to Kiowa County. The print shop is planning to be housed in the Business Incubator in Greensburg as soon as it is completed.

As of July 7th, the Kiowa County Courthouse will no longer be available as a storm shelter due to remodel construction. Reconstruction is anticipated to be completed by June 2009.

· CUSTOMERS MOVING TO NEW ADDRESSES: Please notify the Greensburg Post Office when moving. New addresses must be entered into the Address Management database in order to be recognized by the United States Postal Service. It is imperative that new addresses be recorded, as any mail for addresses not entered into the database can only be held for a maximum of ten days, after which time all mail will be returned to the sender with the endorsement: "Address Not Known". BLOOD DRIVE
The Greensburg Community Blood Drive sponsored by the American Red Cross will be held on Friday, Aug. 1st from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The blood drive will be held at the Bethel Mennonite Church located 3 miles south and 1 mile west of the Highway 183/54 interchange.

YOUTH FOR CHRIST GROUND BREAKING
Everyone is invited to attend the Youth for Christ Teen Center Ground Breaking will be held on Sunday, August 10th at 2:00 p.m.

The new location of the Teen Center will be adjacent to the GHS parking lot (between parking lot and tennis courts).

As of July 7th, the Kiowa County Courthouse will no longer be available as a storm shelter due to remodel construction. Reconstruction is anticipated to be completed by June 2009.

AFTER HOURS NETWORKING SESSION

APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS: EXTENS A HELPING HAND TO GREENSBURG
Wanted: helping hands of all skill levels to participate in building Habitat for Humanity houses in Greensburg this summer. The Pratt/Kiowa County chapter of Wichita Habitat for Humanity has openings for 1,500 volunteers as it builds three houses in Greensburg. Volunteers will be helping every Tuesday through Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., July 24 through August 23.
Volunteers should bring their own sack lunch and Habitat will have ice, water, Gatorade and shade available on site. Volunteers 16 and older are welcome to join the build. For safety reasons, youth 16-17 years old will need to be accompanied by their legal guardian or parent.

PRATT MUSIC THEATRE TO CLOSE AFTER 18 YEARS
The Board of Directors of Pratt Music Theatre released this statement announcing their decision to dissolve Pratt Music Theatre no later than June, 2009.
This difficult decision was not reached easily and only after prayerful & soul-searching consideration. While we have maintained and continued to improve on our high standards PMT has set, it has been increasingly difficult. Even with a large number of volunteers during production, it has been harder and harder to find individuals to accept leadership roles in the organization. Over the past few years, the artistic core and leadership component of the PMT organization has dwindled to a few, through moves from the community and other life changes. This has made it impossible to continue with the quality of productions we have all come to expect.
The Board of Directors is very grateful to Pratt and the surrounding communities for the support, encouragement and active involvement that have been shown to PMT over the last 18 years.
From the beginning of PMT in 1990, the Greensburg and Haviland communities have always been actively represented by the gifts of time and talent of many performers on the PMT stage. The community has supported PMT by their presence in the audience & as donors. Together we have sustained quality music theatre entertainment in a large rural area through 41 shows and 18 years. This, indeed, is a remarkable achievement. The enthusiasm and enrichment PMT has brought to this area has been a gift given and received. More often than not, it has brought out the best in people and has made our shows something in which we can all take pride.
Thousands of people have been involved in PMT on stage, back stage and as audience members. Lives have been touched, memories created, skills gained and developed. All of those seeds have been planted and will continue to bear fruit. Join with us in celebrating the positive influence PMT has been in this large area over these many years. Thank you all for what you have each shared with Pratt Music Theatre over the years. All mail for Greensburg City Delivery addresses is currently delivered through external boxes located at the Post Office, 139 N. Main St. When moving to an address served by the Greensburg Post Office, please notify the Post Office of your current address and obtain a key to your assigned box.
CUSTOMERS MOVING TO NEW ADDRESSES: Please notify the Greensburg Post Office when moving. New addresses must be entered into the Address Management database in order to be recognized by the United States Postal Service. It is imperative that new addresses be recorded, as any mail for addresses not entered into the database can only be held for a maximum of ten days, after which time all mail will be returned to the sender with the endorsement: "Address Not Known". (DMM 1.2, 1.4)

PRIOR POST OFFICE BOX CUSTOMERS: The Postal Service's AMS Database will begin to reject ALL Post Office Box addresses in the near future. All customers who have received mail via a Post Office Box are required to submit a change of address to a physical address as soon as possible. Customers who meet delivery guidelines for rural delivery will be required to install a mailbox for reciept of mail at their physical address. Access Hollywood and the Discovery Channel will be hosting a screening of the 1st episode of the show “GREENSBURG: A Story of Community Rebuilding” on Sunday, June 15th at 6 p.m. at the Greensburg High School Gymnasium.

Later that evening the episode will air on the Discovery Channel and launch the series that follows Greensburg’s rebuilding.

KIOWA COUNTY CHAMBER BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT GROUP
The Chamber Business Development group is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, June 3, 5:00 p.m. at Brown Auction Center.

SCKTRO ANNUAL MEETING HELD
South Central Kansas Tornado Recovery Organization had its first annual meeting on May 27, 2008. We reviewed some of our accomplishments for the past year. We are handling 225 cases with the residents of Greensburg and the surrounding areas. ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is searching for HEROIC FAMILIES for their next season. We are in search of real heroes – people that have amazing strength and who have put their own needs aside to help someone else. In addition to heroics, the producers are looking for families whose homes are in dire need of help. We don’t want to tear down a nice looking house. We want to see houses that look like they might fall down on their own!

A family must own their own single family home and be able to show producers how a makeover will make a huge difference in their lives.

Interested families should e-mail a short description of their family story to extremefamilycasting@gmail.com. You can nominate a family, please include:
· The names and ages of each member of the household.
· A description of the major challenges within the home.

GREENSBURG STARS OF HOPE
A very special photo book was released on Friday, May 2nd to commemorate an extraordinary community art project carried out by the children of Greensburg, Kansas as way to bring a sense of color and hope back to their devastated community in the wake of last year’s EF-5 tornado which destroyed 95% of their town. The photo book called “Greensburg’s Stars of Hope” shows in brilliant color and inspiring words how the 220 children in Greensburg created and planted 220 individually designed wooden stars which can be seen on nearly every street corner of this South Central community.

But the real story behind “Greensburg’s Stars of Hope” is a story of survival and “Paying it Forward” as the children of Greensburg were helped in this project by the New York City firefighters who survived the 9/11 attacks and who serve at Ground Zero, and how they in turn were aided in this effort by a Texas family whose tornado-ravaged home was rebuilt by the FDNY firefighters on last year’s 9/11 Anniversary, and how they created the stars for the children in Kansas to pint and beautify their town as their way to “Pay It Forward.”

The “Stars of Hope” project was organized the by The New York Says Thank You Foundation, a unique disaster relief organization that helps to rebuild communities around the United States affected by disaster as a way of saying “Thank You” for all the love and support Americans gave to New Yorkers in the days following September 11th. The book was made possible by MyPublisher.com which is donating 50% of the proceeds of the book sales to help The New York Says Thank You Foundation in their upcoming 9/11 Anniversary 2008 rebuilding project in Greensburg. The Foundation hopes to rebuild the 14,000 square-foot 4-H Livestock Pavillion on the Kiowa County Fairgrounds. The book can be previewed online and ordered by going to www.NewYorkSaysThankYou.org.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND RODEO PARADE
The Triangle Rodeo Club will be sponsoring a parade on May 24, 2008. The “Stars of Hope” project was organized the by The New York Says Thank You Foundation, a unique disaster relief organization that helps to rebuild communities around the United States affected by disaster as a way of saying “Thank You” for all the love and support Americans gave to New Yorkers in the days following September 11th. The book was made possible by MyPublisher.com which is donating 50% of the proceeds of the book sales to help The New York Says Thank You Foundation in their upcoming 9/11 Anniversary 2008 rebuilding project in Greensburg. The Foundation hopes to rebuild the 14,000 square-foot 4-H Livestock Pavillion on the Kiowa County Fairgrounds.

The Kiowa County Extension Office and the Kiowa County Health Department are sponsoring a “Health Contract” Program to promote healthy lifestyles. The program will kick off on May 5th and end August 15th. If you would like to participate in the “Health Contract” program, please stop by the Extension Office and pick up a team packet.

A community gardens area has been established for residents of Greensburg who do not have space for a garden. There are 36 garden plots (15’x15’) available on a first come basis. The plots are $10.00 each. The ground will be worked and ready for planting. Water will be provided at no cost. Call the Extension Office for your garden plot at 620-723-2156.

CONTRACTOR/RECONSTRUCTION INFO
· All contractors must register at City Hall between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Contract work is prohibited without registration and/or license. Contractors are responsible for hauling jobsite debris and must plug any sewer lines.

ALUMNI BANQUET
The Greensburg Alumni Banquet will be held on May 24th at 6 p.m. at the Greensburg School Gymnasium. Tickets for the banquet are $12.50 and can be purchased at the Greensburg State Bank. Deadline for registration is May 16th.

BUSINESS INCUBATOR GROUNDBREAKING
The Business Incubator groundbreaking will be held at 6 am on Friday, May 2nd. The groundbreaking will be broadcast live on the CBS Early Show and the whole town is invited! There will be food and live entertainment from REO Speedwagon. It should be a great party, even though it’s early!

BIG WELL PARK
The CBS Early Show will be broadcasting live Monday-Friday from 6-8am from Big Well Park. Everyone is encouraged to be there during the broadcast times to help with the playground construction. This will be a big week for our town, and it would be wonderful if you can come out and help!

CELL PHONE DIRECTORY
The Community Recovery Action Team is asking the community to help us revise the Cell Phone Directory that was published last June. We would like to make a Greensburg Phone Book including new addresses.

We are asking businesses to compile a list of employees with phone numbers and addresses. Over the Celebration Weekend there will be notepads placed around the community to add you information too. The National Weather Service will be on hand from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3rd. We have scheduled two presentation times, but seating is limited. If you do not make the presentation, stop in and visit with Mike Umscheid and Larry Ruthi, during the day. Storm chaser Lance Fergeson will also be available to share his experience with the community. They will be located in the Kiowa County Meeting trailer located just west of the Courthouse (219 S. Oak).
