Now that those are fixed I can share our last trip out.
I took three friends out for a Sunday fish. The weather was frightful to say the least. Blowing 20-25 knots and threatening rain.

Since I am getting used to fishing in that kind of weather it is no big deal.

First one on board with a nice Bluefin Trevally was Paul.

From Nov 1st Serua reef Paul, Vinod, John, Callan

Next up was John, he and I share the retail store space. He catches a little Bluefin also.

From Nov 1st Serua reef Paul, Vinod, John, Callan

Then Vinod lands a nice GT.

From Nov 1st Serua reef Paul, Vinod, John, Callan

At this point Paul's arms are getting tired from casting a 50lb rod and a big River2Sea dumbell popper. It said Sunday the 25th of October would be no good for fishing. Being my only day off to fish I decided it did not matter I was still going out. Sometimes you have to buck the trends.
We leave the jetty about 12:30 pm and head out to Serua reef. The wind is blowing like hell (25-30) and the tide is starting to fall.

With Captain Charlie at the wheel and Rosie at the stern and myself on the bow, we start the routine of casting and retrieving.

It is not long before I hook up to the first fish. It gives a good accounting of itself and soon is in the boat for it's picture.

From Oct 25 Serua reef

It is hard to tell but it was a pig of a Bass. Very fat and strong.

Soon after Rosie hooks up on a Bass also. A little smaller but a nice fish none the less.

Sorry no picture of that one, she declined.

She then followed the bass up with a nice Bluefin Trevally.

From Oct 25 Serua reef

I then proceeded to get rocked by another big Bass. Although I managed to get my lure back it won its freedom.

Things go quiet for a little bit then I hook up on something different. This time on top of the reef. I see the flash of white and then my line pulls tight. As the beast shoots through the water I am still wondering what it is. Then it exits it's water home to show off its aerial prowess. Low and behold it is a Greater Barracuda. A big one at that. After a spectacular display out of the water Rosie leaders it into the boat for a nice photo session.

From Oct 25 Serua reef

With a smile like this you better watch your fingers.

From Oct 25 Serua reef

All in all we did 4 for 5 in a two hour session.
Not bad for a day that was supposed to be bad for fishing.

I don't think I will be going back to that website.

Tight lines

<$BlogFeedsVertical$>

Popping video, how to

Here is a short video on casting and popping technique. It was a beauty of a day, blowing like hell but still gorgeous. We got a bit of a late start but still made it on the water by 9 am.
I decided to fish a spot that we had not fished. Charlie was at the helm Rosie at the stern and myself up on the bow. With the wind blowing a good 20-25 knots the bow was a bit tricky but manageable.

With in 10 minutes I had the first fish on board. A nice Emperor. Standing on the bow you get a great view into the water. This Emperor was fighting 3 other fish for my lure and won. This was a sign of things to come.

From Rosie Charlie Callan Oct 4 Serua Reef

Next fish on was a little Bluefin Trevally.

From Rosie Charlie Callan Oct 4 Serua Reef

Now at this point Rosie is none to happy. She has yet to get a strike, but that is about to change. Suddenly the water around her lure explodes and she is onto a really nice fish. As I look back to Charlie and Rosie and yell for them to see the turtle, Charlie yells back at me and my rod loads up and is almost pulled from my hands. By the time I compose my self maybe 50 meters of line is already gone and my line goes slack. I reel my popper back in and ask Charlie what the hell was that and he say he has no idea. He thought it was a turtle also until it toreout after my lure. Here is a picture of my lure when I got it back.

From Rosie Charlie Callan Oct 4 Serua Reef

Notice the front split ring and hook are gone and the rear hook is opened up. We still do not know what it was.

Oh well back to fishing and Rosie catches a nice Job fish. For those that have never caught a Job fish, the fight a bit like a trevally, hard and dirty.

From Rosie Charlie Callan Oct 4 Serua Reef

This is follow by more Red Bass.

From Rosie Charlie Callan Oct 4 Serua Reef

Then from out in the deep Rosie pulls a beauty of a GT.

From Rosie Charlie Callan Oct 4 Serua Reef

You can tell by the way she is holding it that fatigue is setting in on her. After so many fish she was getting tired, but not slowing down.

I want a break and am getting hungry so I give my rod to Charlie to have a bit of a fish. What happens next is what fishing dreams are made of.

Charlie hollers out that there is a big GT on his lure. As his rod loads up and 50 lb braid melts away he is hooting and yelling for joy. Then from behind me I her Rosie yell GT and then hear here drag start to scream in protest to the speed at which line is being taken. We have a double hook up on big GT's. Rosie makes her way to the front of the boat with Charlie and I start filming.

I will let the video tell the rest of the story.

From Rosie Charlie Callan Oct 4 Serua Reef

Not a bad morning. Here in Fiji it is only proper to go and ask permission to fish in a villages waters. As you saw in earlier posts I did this with a couple of villages already and all was fine. In fact on even asked me if I would help look after their waters, I said yes of course. So after many attempts to meet with the chief of Na Waisomo, Raviravi and Lalati, one person by the title Tui Raviravi, he agrees and gives me about 2 hours to get out to Beqa island where he is. We arrive there and present our Yanqona. We explain our intentions about running a guiding opeation and how it will be catch and release and so forth. Tui Raviravi then sits back and says, lets get right down to business, we want $5,000.00 dollars upfront and for you to write a letter of intent. After I pull my jaw up off the floor I tell him that is a lot of money and I need to think about it. Truth being, there was nothing to think about. No way! $5,000.00 for what? Why? What are you going to do for me? Well the answer to those questions is a resounding, Nothing. So Tui Raviravi and his entourage says they will let me think about it for a week and then call me for another meeting. They never call and I decided I will hold off on the charters for awhile. Too bad, but I will focus on my tackle shop and fish for myself and friends.

Now onto a fishy subject. We got out on the water the other day and it was a beauty of a day. Rosie wanted to go and do some bait fishing with her aunt Adi and sister Lou. So off we go, out to the reefs to drop anchor and bait. Now for those that know me, they know I hate bait fishing, mainly because I suck at it and I seem to catch the fishes house a lot. This day proved to be no different. My first fish was a cracker of a fish.

Luckily the day was awesome and we were having fun.

We caught all sorts of fish. Josh, Ryan, and Jimmy had come into the shop and wanted to go fishing. They said for me to pick the day with the best weather. Which is always iffy at best.
I decided Monday the 24th was the day and spent Sunday getting ready.

We met at the boat at 7:30 am and were on the water in no time. I had a game plan all worked out and was feeling pretty confident. All of that was about to change.

As we headed out to the first spot the weather started to decline rapidly. The sky turned dark and the wind picked up. On top of that not even a bite. By the second spot I was sure it was going to rain and still no bites.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

I worked the grounds hard for these guys but to no avail.

Luckily it never rained on us but the bite was not happening. We decided to try spot number three. We even trolled on our way over to it and didn't get a bite.

Before we got to the third spot the weather cleared and the wind died. It was going to be a nice day after all.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

We arrive to the third location and it looked fishy enough as it always does. By now the guys are using a lot lighter tackle. After what seemed like an eternity, Josh catches a small Coral Trout. He follows that up with a fish I have yet to ID. If you know what it is let me know.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

Then he adds a nice Job fish and a small Trevally.

Things slow down again and it is time to move on to what I am hoping will be a fishy spot at the bottom of the tide.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

About three casts into this spot Josh is on again, only this is a little better fish. It turns out to be a Bluefin Trevally.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

Picture time and then a quick release.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

Now by this time Ryan has not boated a fish.

His determination is only matched by his level of fitness in his ability to cast the whole day.

Jimmy is not on the board either. Although he is nursing a really bad motor cross injury. So casting is only done occasionally.

Josh then catches a nice GT, while Jimmy jumps in for the leader and tail grab.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

Now it is Ryan's turn. He gets into a nice Emperor. This is followed by a Black Trevally that gives a good accounting of it's self. And I might add he deserved it. He never gave up and it paid.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

What started out as a dark and gloomy morning with no fish turned out to be a nice day with a few nice fish and a great bunch of guys.

From JoshRyanJimmyAugust24

Tight Lines

<$BlogFeedsVertical$>

Gavin,Steve,Lindsey and Peter Aug. 21st Fiji fishing

With our shop open six days a week and all the other things that keep life interesting, we have not been out fishing a lot lately. Somehow we just can't find enough hours in the day to get everything done. The saying feast or famine truly applies to our situation.
So again Rosie and I are sitting in the shop working on some display when a group of guys that are visiting from Australia and doing some work for the schools and hospital come in. The first The first thing they say is, "Do you wanna go fishing?" Now haw can anyone turn that down. Of course we wanna go fishing. I ask in my most professional tone, "When would you like to go?" To which they reply, in unison I might add, "Now!" I swallow hard and say give us a few minutes to go and get the gear ready and we will come back to the shop to get you.

So off we go. It is around noon and the weather looks threatening but all of our spirits are high.

We arrive to our first spot and some quick instructions are given. Then the lures are flying. Not long after our start, Gavin is onto a nice fish. A good solid fight and Rosie give it a lift into the boat.

From gavinlindseystevepeteraug21

This is Gavin's first Red Bass, and after a few picture and some video it is back into the water and back to fishing.
Lindsey was using the 30lb rod and after a while of no bites, decided he had enough for now and would become the videographer for the gang.

From gavinlindseystevepeteraug21

From gavinlindseystevepeteraug21

He willingly turned his rod over to Peter. Peter then started casting like there was no tomorrow. Before long he was onto a nice fish. After a good fight and a little coach from Rosie, a Job Fish, first for our boat, was brought on board for it picture taking session.

From gavinlindseystevepeteraug21

Now there was one fellow who at this point was still not on the board, Steve. He was up front with a 50lb rig and doing everything right. He could cast a bloody mile, and his retrieves were perfect. For some reason the fish had lock jaw when it came to his lure. I have to say he persevered for the entire trip. Never faltering and never giving up. He must have had a million casts. I would give him a location and he would cast there, nothing. I would say cast out at 2 o'clock, he would and nothing, not even a bite. Then towards the end of our session with the tide ripping, he cast to a small coral head and had the mother of all strikes. The sound was massive and a hole opened up all around where his lure was. But alas it was not to be. The GT missed the lure and left Steve with the knowledge of what is out there.

From gavinlindseystevepeteraug21

Steve in action with one of many casts.

All in all we had a great time out. I looked to see who it was and saw my good friend Captain Charles' name. I answered with the usual "Hello Captain", to which he replied,"you wanna go for a fish this afternoon". Now usually when he says that it means he wants to eat fish and will drive the boat while I get to fish. Not this time. He says, "I have a couple of guys that want to go for a fish, do you want to take them?" I ponder this for exactly 1.5 seconds and respond sure why not. After all I was not rolling in customers.
Within 20 minutes I was at the jetty with all the gear and meeting my guests,

Denis and Christina Kay

From august5charter

Theo and Youlla Eriunidis.

From august5charter

As we pull away from the jetty, Capt. Charles is at the wheel and I have taken over as deckhand/host. Rosie, who usually does this job had to stay and watch the store.

It is about a 25-30 minute ride out the the reefs we are going to fish, so I sit down with my new angling friends and go over a few things about safety and not hooking me in the back or head with a lure.

We arrive at the reef and I give a few casting lessons and put Denis up at the bow and Theo at the stern. Lucky for me these two fellows are quick studies and are casting like pros in no time.

Unfortunately the fish gods were not shining their grace on us. Between a full moon and 25 knot winds we did not see a lot of action.

Denis landed a nice Bluefin Trevally on 30 lb.

From august5charter

We kept up the chatter and never lost hope. These two fellows put in the casting time and deserved more fish but it was not to be. The wind was relentless but every time we moved the boat Denis would get out on the bow and do a Leonardo DiCaprio "Titanic" impression, only his Kate Winslet decided it was way to rough to be out there so he did it alone.

From august5charter

In the end we had a good time despite a lack of fish as told by Theo's smile.

From august5charter

I hope to see this group again as it was quite enjoyable.

Tight lines

<$BlogFeedsVertical$>

After Noon Quickie

We have been working on opening up a fishing tackle store here in Fiji. Boy is it a heck of a lot of work and the doors are not even open yet. We found a shop that is in a good location and a good price and split the space with a friend named John. He will be opening a meat and specialty food shop. We are calling it "Pacific Harbour Fishing Tackle and Meats".
The other day we were inside painting and cleaning up the pig stye that the previous tenants left and finished up around noon. The weather looked ok and I said to my partners in crime, "why don't we go for a fish?" Of course there was a resounding, "sure what time?" To which I replied, "let's go home grab the gear and go." So we did.

I always leave the boat ready to go. It is cleaned fueled and watered. That way all I have to do is jump in and turn the key and go fish.

It is now just after noon and as we leave the shelter of the break wall it becomes obvious that the wind has picked up out of the SW and there is a rain squall coming our way. We put the hammer down and pound our way out across the channel to Beqa Lagoon.

Soon the clouds part and the sun comes out, although we are still contending with a 15-20 knot SW wind, it turns into a beauty of an afternoon.

Ok I need to back up a bit here and tell you that John has been out with us before but the weather has always been crap and he has declined to try popper fishing with the boat pitching in all directions. Not that I blame him. So this time it is just John, Rosie and myself out and John is at the rear with Rosie out front. After a few quick casting lessons John is popping like a pro.

Not long after we start really fishing, Rosie gets smashed by a beauty of a Long Nose Emperor. These fish fight like Mack trucks. They hit the lure and head straight for any structure they can find. and with a big fat tail propelling them they can move. After a good tussle Rosie brings it to the boat so it can have it's picture taken.

From XstreemFishingCom

From XstreemFishingCom

I instructed John on the fact that most, if not all first time poppers don't catch anything. It is just part of the learning curve. So to avoid disappointment I told him not to expect much in the way of fish but to practice and have fun.
Much to my and his surprise his rod suddenly loads up and he is onto a good fish. After a dirty fight with a nasty toothy Bass, John proves triumphant.

From XstreemFishingCom

Things go quiet for awhile after that and we settle into a nice rhythm and everyone gets a bit comfortable. This is not to last.

When you least expect it, I think the saying goes.

Suddenly, Rosie's rod loads up and line starts to peel off. With the drag screaming and me backing out of the reef the fight is on. We know immediately that it is a GT. Nothing fights like them. Deep powerful runs followed by massive head shakes and finally the long haul up with the fish using it's massive girth to fight you all the way to the top.

From XstreemFishingCom

It was like someone told all the fish that it was time to bite. With in a couple of minutes Rosie was on to another GT. A bit smaller but gave a good accounting of itself none the less.

From XstreemFishingCom

Now it was John's turn again. This time he was onto a Long Tom and it put on quite an aerial display. He handled it like a pro.

From XstreemFishingCom

Then it was back to the Trevally. This time Rosie lands a nice Bluefin Trevally.

From XstreemFishingCom

When the fishing is hot it's really hot and with great water clarity we all got to see the next fish swim up to the lure and nonchalantly take it. Once it had the lure and was heading in the opposite direction the massive GT turned on the after burners. The drag screamed as line melted from the reel. The fight was good and fair. Moving from on top of the reef to deep water followed by great head shakes and the long slug up to the top. Patience and perseverance finally paid off.

This catch is a testament to good angling skills. It was hooked with only one leg of a treble and only in the lip. When it was brought on board the lure just fell out. She kept constant pressure on the fish never slacking once. The rod stayed bent the entire time and she received her just reward a really nice GT. That was how the day started.

We had a late start, after 10AM. The weather was breaking and it was decided last minute to go fishing. The action was relatively fast, we probably landed 6 fish with a lot more strikes in about 2 hours. The water was clear as glass and you could see the strike as they happened.

From XstreemFishingCom

We caught about four Bluefin Trevally as well as Queen fish and Bass.

From XstreemFishingCom

This all happened before 1PM. So after much arse dragging we decided to go and have a fish. By now it is after 10:00 AM.
By 11:00 we are on the water cruising to a spot just a few miles away.

Things start out a bit slow. The tide has already turned and we have while until it is low. Still we fish on.

We were fishing inside the reef. Hitting all the little nooks and crannies. When all of a sudden Paul hooks up to a good size Barracuda. With plenty of jumps and a couple good runs it is brought to the boat for it's obligatory photo session.

From XstreemFishingCom

On a strange note, it seems lately that our first fish is always a Barracuda, don't know why but it has happened now about 10-12 times.

That lovely toothy critter was followed up by a Sea Bass

From XstreemFishingCom

Next on the menu is a bluefin.

From XstreemFishingCom

Then we get a triple hook-up of Bass and all three end up in the boat. Not bad if I say so myself.

From XstreemFishingCom

By this time the tide is full out and we spot a couple of schools of bait being busted up right next to the reef. This means all three poppers head in that direction.

Then suddenly a finned torpedo launches out of the water and lands mouth first on my lure. As the line goes tight I figure it to be a Wahoo or Spanish Mackerel. After a respectable fight on 30lb Rosie puts the gaff in a nice Spanish Mack.

From XstreemFishingCom

Not long after that Paul lands a nice Bluefin Trevally.

From XstreemFishingCom

Soon after the bite stops and it is time to head home. Not a bad day for a last minute fishing trip.

Tight lines

<$BlogFeedsVertical$>

Fishing report for first week of June

Our last two trips out have been quite good. Out come the skirts and here comes the Mahimahi.

From XstreemFishingCom

For those of you who have never caught a Mahimahi before let me tell you. They give a good fight, especially on light tackle but the kicker is when you bring them in the boat, they go mad. They are actually very dangerous, especially with hooks in their mouths. The best thing to do is put a wet towel over their eyes and they will calm down enough for you to hog tie them. If you miss with the towel look out, they are going to go ballistic. The upside to all of this is they taste great.

The next trip out saw us poppering the reef with 30lb and 50lb spinning gear. This time my good friend Captain Charles Wakeham took the wheel so I could also fish.

First up is a nice little Queen fish.

From XstreemFishingCom

That is followed closely by a Red Sea Bass. Normally considered a by-catch when fishing for GT's, but they do put up a good fight on lighter gear.

From XstreemFishingCom

As always when fishing around reefs you can expect sharks. Usually Black tip and White tip sharks are the first to turn up. Here is a nice Black tip caught on a popper.

From XstreemFishingCom

Going home without a GT under our belt just wont due. I have been going out regularly but no really catching anything.
We planned to go to Rukua village on Beqa to do a sevusevu and if we had time then a little fishing after.

The Tui Rukua was a very nice chief and we drank lots of grog and talked plenty. We spent about 3 hours with him and when we left we were thoroughly grog doped. No matter we had time for a fish so off we went to try a few new spots.

The wind was howling at a good 20-25 knts so we had to stay inside the reef.

Almost immediately upon fishing Rosie was on to a massive cod. It gave a good accounting of itself but soon succumbed to the 50lb braid. As she decided to have a break I took up her rod and had a few casts.

After about 15 minutes of drifting along and inshore reef we came upon a nice sunken coral head all by itself. I fired several casts at it when suddenly the water exploded and a giant hole opened up where my lure was. My line went tight instantly and the scream of the drag was unmistakable. I was onto a nice GT, finally. It was a good fight that the GT never gave up even at the end. After a few pictures the GT was in the water never looking back.

This was the first GT in the boat and I am hoping the end of my fishing slump.

Five more fish were landed during the session by others on the boat but I was one happy skipper.

<td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; The weather has shaped up for the time being. The boat did well but not I. For some reason I think I lost some of my mojo. Normally I do well fishing. I am not bragging here I just fish a lot and use my head to think like a fish, no matter how strange it gets. I have fished most of my life, so when I go on a streak of no fish it usually means something is wrong.
Now these last few trips I have had Captain Charles Wakeham with me and he does some of the driving and guiding. This could be my problem as I am jinxed when it comes to charters. Lately I have felt like I was on a charter boat with all the fishing I have been doing and Charles at the helm.

Although I did get smoked twice by GT's on 50lb braid. I felt like I brought a knife to a canon fight.

Oh well at least the rest on the boat are catching fish. Here are a few shots for you daily fish fix.

Sea Bass From XstreemFishingCom

Bluefin Trevally From XstreemFishingCom

Sea Bass From XstreemFishingCom

Casting From XstreemFishingCom

Tight lines

<$BlogFeedsVertical$>

Yanuca sevusevu, Fiji

Ok so you are asking what the hell is a Yanuca (ya-new-tha) sevusevu (say-voo say-voo).

Yanuca is one of the islands I fish around and sevusevu is a gift of goodwill.

Here in Fiji all of the inshore reef systems are part of a village qoliqoli (ngoly ngoly). In other words it belongs to them.

So in order for me to fish on these reefs I need to go to each village where I want to fish and ask for permission, or perform a sevusevu.

This entails a bundle of yaqona and the Chief and/or the Turaga ni Koro, (village headman).

I present the yaqona to the Chief/headman and someone asks for permission for me to fish.

Some villages charge money and some do not. No rain but the wind is still blowing. Not to be deterred we set out on a fishing expedition. The morning started out pretty good we had a NE wind that kept the swell to a minimum and allowed us do drift right along the reef and cast poppers. We caught a few nice Bass and a Bluefin Trevally. By the time we left the dock it was apparent that the weather was really bad. I think it was blowing 20-25 kts and raining like hell. The sea was a mess, but who cares we were going fishing.

We found some great locations for poppers and started to fish. Between the boat rocking and rolling and the wind blowing, it was probably the most difficult session I have had. We only landed a couple of fish.

This is one of them, a beautiful sea bass.

Even the hardiest of seamen fell to a bout of motion sickness.

As I said, we did find some great spots but they will have to wait for better weather.

Tight lines

<$BlogFeedsVertical$>

Fishing Frigates Passage in Fiji

We went fishing today on the new boat. A get away for the weekend. See something different and try something new. This idea led to my suggestion that we drive to the other side of the island and stay at Anglers Paradise. We both had heard and read about the fishing retreat. The owner James Siers had quite the reputation as a fisherman and a photographer.

So after several email and a couple of phone calls the plans were made. We would make the leisurely drive, about 3.5 hours to their place on Friday afternoon. Sleep there Friday night and fish on Saturday, sleep Saturday night and take off Sunday morning for a nice drive home.

After packing enough fishing gear for twenty people, I finally have the truck loaded and we are off to a great start at exactly 12:00 noon. Gas up, check the oil and fill the fluids. After all our truck is a bit old.

On the road again

The wind in my hair and pot holes under my tires. The road has degenerated since my last trip down here. Bad weather and lack of maintenance has taken it’s toll. Two hours later we have traveled what should have taken one hour.

We grab a bite to eat and hit the road again. Now it is starting to rain, but that does not dampen our spirits. After all we are going fishing!

We make a scheduled stop at a fishing store in the Jet set town of Nadi. We find nothing to buy and decide to just move on.

The road conditions in Nadi are horrible. This is the first impression a tourist/visitor receives. It is like driving on a logging road only with heaps of traffic and rain to boot. I have to say it is rather embarrassing.

It is now 4:00 p.m. and we still have an hour to go. They decided we should take the 40ft boat instead of the center console. A decision that would come back to haunt them.

The morning

The weather has cleared and it is shaping up to be a beauty, blue sky and a little puff of breeze. As we motor along to our first stop I am busy prepping our gear for the day. The mood on board is upbeat and anticipation is high. We are soon visited by a pod of spinner dolphins and they proceed to put on a show for us.

We arrive at our first fishing spot and after a little jostling around we pick our spots on the boat to fish and settle in.

The tide is starting to turn and go out, the weather is great and we are soon into a rhythm of casting giant poppers in hopes of enticing Giant Trevally to bite.

Things are a little quiet to start but that does nothing to dampen the spirits on board, after all, this place has a reputation of producing GT’s that can bust 80lb line like it was thread.

We are cruising along the edge of reefs and coral heads, casting at bait and anything that moves. There are big rises all around us and schools of bait everywhere. What a fishing dream.

The haunting

After about an hour of fishing, suddenly the motor is switched off and the crew are all inside the cabin with the engine compartment open. This can’t be good. Turns out the engine is over heating and no one knows why. The decision is made to drop anchor and call for help.

Unfortunately where we drop anchor is too far away from the reef to fish. So after 15-20 minutes of casting practice the rods are put up and we settle in for the wait. By the time help arrives in the form of a mechanic and Jim, several hours have ticked by.

It is decided that we switch to the center console and the mechanic and Jim will take the big boat back and we will fish on.

The afternoon

By now the tide is running full out and the sun is straight up. It is starting to get hot and the breeze is nonexistent. We continue to fish without a bite for the next couple of hours. Finally the deckhand, Murad, hooks what looks to be a nice fish. Unfortunately the fish made it home before Murad got it to the boat. Fish 1, boat 0. Amazing how one fish can get everyone a bit excited and reinvigorated.

A little while later Murad makes up for his lost fish and lands a nice GT.

Now everyone is fired up and the boat is abuzz with excitement. All for not.

The next fish would not be seen until 3:30 p.m. I was lucky enough to be the one to catch it. The surface exploded and a hole opened up where my popper was. As my 50lb braid came tight it was obvious this was a good fish. The fish gods were smiling down upon me as the GT headed for deep water instead of it’s home. That gave me a fighting chance. After several good runs pulling braid at 10kg of drag, the GT finally gave in and came to the boat. It pulled the scales down at a respectable 16kg. Not the biggest but a nice fish none the less. That proved to be the last fish we would see for the day until dinner.

Rosie had a total of one looker for the day.

I guess that is why it is called fishing and not catching.

We wrapped up the evening drinking kava with the staff and telling stories of fish caught before.

The drive home

We left our new friends from Anglers Paradise around 10:00 a.m. On Sunday morning and headed home. We decided to stop in Nadi to grab a bite to eat. As I was waiting for Rosie to get the food a friend who goes by the name of Elvis hijacks us to go to his house and have a bowl of kava. This turns into an all day ordeal. Oh well such is the life in Fiji. We finally arrive home after 6:00 p.m. And sleep early.

<$BlogFeedsVertical$>
