Resale Stores and Used Jeans

Recently I was reading an article in the AARP Bulletin that discussed how thrift shops (now calling themselves resale stores) are growing during these challenging times. Why? Because they offer people great product at very reasonable prices.

That's what we do here at tanas banana. We hand pick used jeans and jean merchandise for you. Gently used clothing that still looks great and has many years of wear left.

The Resale and Thrift Shops say that their member stores have shown an increase of 30% since last fall. It shows that consumers are looking for ways to stretch their clothing dollars.

Today I just got back from buying alot of great used jeans and have added denim skirts to this growing line of used clothing. So, stop by, just did some listing today. You may find just what you need to add to your wardrobe.

Okay, so I'm enamored by this ebay store. It's just a joy to know that it is an eco-friendly creation where I feel like I'm 'saving the world, one pair of jeans at a time'. Whether it's economics or your passion to live a more sustainable life wearing jeans that are already comfortable and broke in is fun!

And, of course, as I find jeans that fit me, I quickly place them in my closet and now I have great used jeans that are fun to wear because I'm saving money and continuing to learn how to reuse stuff to help the planet.

Skin care and cosmetics are a non-regulated industry and this study showed that teen girls in America have toxic, cancer causing and hormone-disrupting chemicals in their systems.

All of us assume that when we shop for skin care and cosmetics that the products are safe and have been tested. However, this is not the case.

Living a Love Story Everyday - Valentines Day

I have never written a Love Story, but I live one everyday. My husband and I will be married 44 years on February 15, 2009, so Valentine’s Day holds a very special place for us. The only reason we weren’t married on Valentine’s Day was because the court house was closed. Our parents, Dads, took us to be married at the court house, we were 16 and I was pregnant. In the 60’s the values were different. When I became pregnant I was not allowed to attend public school and our families believed that we should take responsibility for our actions by getting married.

Recently I needed a copy of our marriage certificate. I drove an hour to the county clerks office where they could not find it. The woman taking care of me asked how old I was when I was married and I told her 16. I was sent to probate court and had to go to the probate judge’s office to get a copy because we were minors at the time. What a flood of memories when I received the copy and saw our Dad’s signatures, who both have passed, on the marriage certificate. We became underage adults through our actions.

Now this love story is filled with great difficulties because when children so young get married your life is unplanned and the possibilities of fulfilling any dreams that you had are extinguished, but, our hearts and souls led us to create a house filled with Love and the passion to get through the dark times.

And we had great joy and happiness. We were blessed with a daughter and a son and now have seven grandchildren. Our home is filled with ‘I Love You’ and calls from our children weekly sharing their lives and always ending each call with ‘I Love You Alot!” It is the joy that makes my heart swell with great pride at our little family that was built on Valentine’s Day Love.

I would never suggest unwed teen pregnancy because I personally know the cost to everyone for that action. We never attended college and had to learn how to survive using hard work and our wits.

However, something magical happened with us, we were deeply in Love then and we are deeply in Love now, true soul mates living through the great difficulties and joys that come as married children and the bountiful blessings that have surrounded us as we grew into adults as a family of four.

We will live together until we die and still my heart beats fast when I see him, when I lay next to him at night and when I hear his voice on the phone. I see him with the great Spirit that he brought to our Love from the beginning and that is what I will see until we part. February 14th is always a day of celebration for us and sometimes we share memories, it’s easy, because there are so many. There is no one on the planet that knows us like we do and I am thankful for him, he is my Love who has been with me since we were young teenagers.

Lately I've been finding more websites online that help me find local resources for additional recycling. Staples and OfficeMax will take your recycled cell phones and other technology equipment. I have an old modem from the internet satellite days and certainly don't want to put it in the recycling bin.

Today some ideas for recycling shoes came across my desk. Don't throw them in the trash, recycle. Nike recycles them and uses them in products, even some shoes. I began signing petitions that would come to me via email and noticed that sometimes I received these great responses from her. I was impressed and thought here is someone who takes the time to draft a response and send it to her fellow citizens.

The Honorable Al Gore says that we must connect and speak to our representatives in order to bring about the rebirth of a healthy, green planet - to stop global warming. It is our individual actions that will bring about change.

I have been working to making sure that America can compete in the new Green Economy. We can't afford to move from a dependence on foreign oil to a dependence on foreign technologies. I am committed to reducing emissions and making our communities cleaner while creating new, good-paying jobs here in America.

That is why I created my Green Collar Job Initiative, a five part strategy aimed to embrace opportunities and help us lead the world in innovation. I've brought together more than 33 Senators to support my initiative, which was included in the Senate Budget.

The budget blueprint, passed by the Senate, calls for more than $2 billion invested in:

.Energy Efficiency and Conservation. These grants would help build partnerships between cities, counties, and states to take on our energy challenges and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. My initiative puts decision-making at the local level, where in many cases, local governments are already breaking ground to reduce carbon emissions and become more energy efficient. This creates new high-paying jobs for architects, construction workers, contractors, and engineers.

.Advanced Batteries. As domestic automakers are building new hybrid vehicles, they currently have to use foreign-made batteries. The Budget calls for investments in loans and grants to support the domestic production of advanced battery technologies, such as lithium ion batteries, hybrid electrical systems, and component and software design. This will create new manufacturing jobs here in America.

.Retooling older plants. The Budget would invest in a new Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program, which authorizes loans to encourage retooling of existing factories to produce the next generation of vehicles. Retooling will help prevent plant closures, saving thousands of American jobs.

.Biofuel production and access. These grants would help build our biofuel infrastructure - including hauling, storing, and dispersing these fuels. This provision also encourages the development of the next generation of biofuels, like cellulosic ethanol and biodiesel that can reduce greenhouse emissions by up to 80% compared to current fuels in use today. It also creates new construction, agriculture, engineering, science, and trucking jobs.

.Green Job training program. The Budget calls for competitive grants to non-profits, private partnerships, and labor unions to help workers who have lost their jobs to find work in this groundbreaking field. There is a real need to train workers for new green jobs in renewable energy or advanced technology automobile manufacture, and to retrain existing workers to give them new skills for higher tech jobs.

These programs are now before the Appropriations Committee, which makes the final decisions on how funding is allocated. Additionally, I was successful in including billions in loans to retool factories and funding for advanced battery research and development in a new economic stimulus bill that has been approved by the Appropriations Committee and is now pending votes in the full Senate. I will continue to support full funding for programs that increase the diversity of our energy supply, improve technology, and expand workforce capacity and job skills as next year's federal budget continues through the legislative process.

Investments in new technologies can create green jobs that utilize Michigan's engineering, manufacturing, and agricultural expertise, while protecting the environment and reducing costs. In the future, I will continue my work to bring new jobs to Michigan that will strengthen our competitiveness in a global economy and reduce American dependence on foreign oil.

We can feed the world and must restore ecological health to our planet. The new Organic Green Revolution will mark a dramatic change, moving from unsustainable, increasingly unaffordable and petroleum-based and toxic fertilizers and pesticides, to organic regenerative farming systems that sustain and improve the health of our world population, our soil and our environment.

While feeding the hungry has always been a challenging global issue, the juxtaposition of the food price, fuel price and financial crises of this past year have disproportionately hurt the world’s most vulnerable - plunging an additional 77 million people into malnutrition, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Now more than ever before we need a paradigm

"Organic green revolution" can solve global hungerIn a new report, the Rodale Institute calls for a dramatic shift from costly, chemical-intensive industrial farming systems to regenerative organic systems, which it says can help the world feed itself. The report cites a study of small-scale farmers in 57 countries whose yields increased by an average 79 percent when they used sustainable agriculture techniques and other research in developing countries that found organic farming was two to three times more productive than conventional farming. Organic farming methods restore nutrients and carbon to the soil, resulting in higher nutrient density in crops and increased yields. Organic soils also contain more beneficial microorganisms, are less vulnerable to erosion, and retain moisture better to help plants survive drought conditions. A 28-year side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional practices on Rodale's research farm in Pennsylvania has found that organically grown corn and soybeans are more resistant to drought, outperforming conventional crops by 30 percent and 50 to 100 percent respectively. What’s for Lunch? Schools Bring Vegetarian Options to the Table

Recognizing students’ nutritional needs and preferences, districts across the country are revamping their menus—and receiving kudos for their healthy efforts.

While peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and cheese pizza have long reigned as vegetarian option kings in school cafeterias, the face of the vegetarian meal is starting to change for the better of children’s health—and for good reason. A recent report from Johns Hopkins University predicts that if current trends continue, 24% of children and adolescents will be overweight or obese by 2015. And children enjoying vegetarian lifestyles aren’t necessarily immune to this plight.

Just as labeling a food organic doesn’t make it healthy, saturated fat and cholesterol can easily find their way into a vegetarian school lunch when oily cheese pizza is an afternoon mainstay. “A lot of vegetarian foods aren’t necessarily low in fat or saturated fat, and they can be very high in cholesterol and sodium,” says Susan Levin, MS, RD, a staff nutritionist at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). She names cheese pizza as an example: “That to me is not an acceptable alternative to any other junk food like chicken nuggets. Dairy is the No. 1 source of saturated fat in kids’ diets, so you’re not only not getting that out, you’re giving them more.”

But on a brighter note, another trend is also emerging. Not only are more students boarding the meatless train to a vegetarian lifestyle, but schools are also catching on and offering more plentiful and healthful vegetarian options such as Italian pasta fagioli, veggie burger wraps, and build-your-own bean burritos. . .

Erik Peterson, director of public awareness for the School Nutrition Association, recognizes the obstacles that U.S. schools need to overcome in the National School Lunch Program.

Peterson says that while there are exceptions, he sees many schools are overcoming today’s regulations and are serving more healthy meals, including more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat dairy than ever before. . . read the complete article

LA Times - Avoid the marketing misuse of 'green'

I found this in Twitter from the Los Angeles Times, the article by Shaila Wunderlich, Chicago Tribune reporter, is a reminder that green can be confusing. I know, it's just another thing to think about, but, certainly mindful spending really counts here.

Yesterday I was speaking to a friend who shared a story they had seen on 20/20 where a municipality had hired a 'green' company to dispose of their technology products and found that they were shipping the computers and other hardware to a third world country where 'disposable people' sat in the dirt stripping hazardous material with no oversight. This is not green!

Another sure sign of green washing is no ingredients, unclear or incomplete listings on household cleaners.

What are Your Possibilites in 2009!

Happy New Year!

I know that many people around the planet are concerned about this year, 2009! And yet, I feel so hopeful about the possibilities. Maybe it's because much of my time is spent looking at the good news, the green news, the green biz news. And I find many non-profits geared toward creating well-being and abundance with a vision of offering people the opportunity to build businesses through micro-lending that can feed families throughout the world.

All you need to do is take a look. When I spend time looking I see the incredible difference that families, small companies and even corporations are making as we move toward a green economy. We are poised at the brink of a New Earth, which is what Ekhardt Tolle discusses in his book.

Will it be filled with bumps and bruises? Yep, but, with great anticipation I'm excited to be here and experience all of the greatness that humanity has stored inside of ourselves. Perhaps saving our planet is the catalyst that will bring about that greatness that is in each of us.

Have a New Year that is filled with possibilities, greatness, abundance, courage and action.

Finding Our Peace in the Stillness

Recently I had a conversation with someone who had a very difficult family matter to deal with. The person was trying to figure out how to deal with someone they loved dearly and received only hate and negative actions. The cause of this ordeal is not what is important, it is our daily reaction to it, how we work at understanding and learn the great gift of love.

There is compassion for both sides of this sad disconnect. The one who is spending energy everyday in hate is wasting a part of their life being pulled down by the whirlpool of negativity. Building a dark wall that becomes thicker and more difficult to breach.

The one who wants to love is filled with conflicting emotions because there seems to be no resolution. Each encounter with this loved family member is filled with rejection, hate and unkind action.

Can these family members eventually create peace? They don't know. Creating peace truly comes from within because when you learn to live in peace with yourself the conflicted hateful energy from another cannot disturb you. Even if you have others around you that this conflict is affecting your directed peaceful energy is how you can help them create their own peace within this situation. It also has the possibility of breaking down the dark wall that is separating you from someone you love.

Learning to forgive sounds easy, but, it is a most difficult action. In our stillness the monumental upheaval of these emotions come forth so they can be released and replaced with Love, Light and Peace.

You cannot change others, you can only change yourself.

EPA Puts Up $1 Million to Fund Sustainable Ag Projects

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Under a new series of grants announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, five projects across the country will explore cutting-edge ways of reducing the use of pesticides on farms.

The grants will study integrated pest management (IPM), natural solutions to controlling insect and other pests on farmlands. IPM methods range from relatively simple practices, like lining irrigation ditches with plants that absorb pesticides and nutrients from agricultural runoff, to more complex procedures that encourage beneficial insects to make habitat on farmland and keep destructive pest populations in check.

Two farm projects and three university programs are receiving funds. The farm projects, both in California, are working on some of the state's most lucrative crops. A project in the Sacramento region is working on ways to reduce water runoff from fruit and nut orchards, particularly almonds, walnuts and peaches. The crops combined cover 324,000 acres in California and generate more than $1 billion in revenue every year.

In central California's wine country near Paso Robles, another project aims to help farmers reduce the need for "high-risk" pesticides in vineyards, as well as helping marketing grapes and wines that are grown using organic and low-impact methods.

At the Universities of Michigan and Florida, two teams earned grants to study IPM methods that could be put to use in crops ranging from blueberries to greenhouse-grown tomatoes.

The final grant goes to the IPM Institute of North America in Madison, Wisc., to implement IPM methods in all K-12 schools in the U.S. in the next seven years.

Climate change is one of our most pressing issues and trees supply the planet with oxygen, maintaining the soil and habitat for thousands of species. Science shows that trees, growing as part of a biodiverse native forest, will not only absorb greenhouse gas emissions, but will also help to tackle salinity, improve water quality and provide essential habitat for native species.

Use this carbon emissions calculator to calculate your carbon footprint and then choose an organization that will plant trees to offset what you use.

Australians since 1997. These trees will form permanent forests and create an investment in rural Australia for future generations. For $51 they will plant $17 trees for you.

arborday.org - Inspires people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. The Arbor Day Foundation with plant 2,500 square feet in the rainforest for $10.

carbonify.com - One of the main offenders contributing to rapidly increasing temperature isn't carbon itself, it's increased carbon dioxide (C02) emissions, methane and deforestation. For $2.95 mo. Carbonify.com will plant 5 trees for you each month.

These organizations offer something that most of us can afford. Start thinking about how 2009 will be the year when you will lessen your footprint by planting trees.

Filling Our Lives with Prosperity

In these challenging times it can be difficult to feel like our lives are filled with prosperity. Our thoughts and actions scream of lack and disappointment being caught up in the insanity of the world's financial woes. We all know someone who is being touched in some manner by the drastic changes that have happened recently in the financial markets.

Abundance seems so far removed from the daily concerns of keeping our jobs, paying the bills and feeding our families. This is a time when each of us can use our own thoughts and actions to bring relief and rebuild the connection that we all share.

The holiday season is here and many of us will experience fewer gifts, but, it is our giving actions that can truly make a difference in our lives and others.

Here are some action ideas for the holiday season:

give to a charity you believe in, whatever you give will help someone

volunteer, just for a few hours, for some non-profit organization

create a 'smile day', everywhere you go smile at those who are taking care of you like cashiers and waitstaff

when you wakeup think of 5 things you are grateful for

be patient even when things are not 'going your way'

You can probably add to this list, do that, our loving, kind and heartfelt actions helps reconnect us and lifts all of us to a better world.

Learn to Receive in the Season of Giving

In this season of giving we are all reminded of how fortunate we are. Placing money in that big Salvation Army pot, dropping off new toys for children in need or giving food to families are outstanding acts of kindness. Giving seems to be effortless for most people.

Receiving is where we create natural prosperity that allows us to live abundant and joyful lives. Many times I find that people don't accept a compliment gracefully. Someone says 'I really like that shirt' and then the compliment is downgraded by a remark like, 'oh, this old thing, I've had it for years.'

Personally I enjoy compliments and sincerely express how good it makes me feel, because it does. When I react with acceptance I'm building my ability to receive the great bounty that the Universe has for me. Simple acts like graciously accepting a compliment teaches me that I'm worthy of receiving and builds my self-esteem.

Receiving compliments is learning how to joyfully accept someones sincere feelings about something they like about you. The next time someone gives you a sincere compliment, be joyful, accept it graciously. You also uplift the person giving you a compliment by making them feel good.

Accept the positive and feel worthy knowing that there is so much more waiting for you.

Imagine a World Where . . .

At times the very beauty of this planet awakens in me the essence of its overflowing beauty. I imagine a world where people understand and act on how deeply we are connected with one another and our planet.

In that I gain a sense of why it is so important to me to do what I can to help the environment by living as green a life as possible. The connections with my children and grandchildren push me forward to continually speak for them and their home-the Earth. This way of thinking takes me away from nationalism and I see myself as a valued member of planetary life. My actions matter.

Each of us is here to make a difference, in our own spectacular way, and your actions matter. It is becoming easier to find ways, small ways, everyday ways to make a difference for the environment. There is no doubt that your everyday choices are making a difference. It is these small choices that have the possibility of creating a green planet where great abundance and prosperity flows through all cultures and countries.

You can choose, empower yourself to create a healthy, green lifestyle. Listen to the inner self that is guiding you toward choices that will help you make a difference.
