The megamodel and muse to Tom Ford sets his sights on Hollywood !

The business of being tall, dark, and handsome isn't as easy as it looks. Just ask Jon Kortajarena, the Spanish model-turned-actor better known as Jon K. "I can't tell you how rare it is for me to find a couple of days to just relax", he sighs. Kortajarena was scouted right out of high school. His debut gig was a Cavalli campaign, to which he showed up a bit naive. "I remember asking, "So who's this Cavalli ? Where is he ?" he laughs. "Everyone just kinda stared".
Armani, Versace, and Tom Ford campaigns soon followed. A steadfast friendship with Mr Ford has provided Kortajarena the opportunity to leap from being just a pretty face to serving as a full-blown fashion muse. Now, with Tom F making his directional debut, Jon K has made the crossover to acting. In Ford's film "A single man", Jon K plays Carlos, a struggling young actor who winds up turning tricks in a liquor store parking lot. The emotionally redolent film scored high with critics at the Venice Film Festival. "I knew the movie was going to be something special from the moment I read the script", he says. "I had tears".
Jon Kortajarena describes working with Tom Ford on the film as the high point of his career so far, and he hopes to do more acting in the future. "I realized that while playing this role, I felt very strong and very secure, maybe more than in real life", he says thoughtfully. "If you feel that way doing something, it means you're supposed to do it".

Yay ! Breaking news from Tim Hamilton : after several years of presenting in New York, the designer will be showing in Paris for Spring 2010, giving his first-ever runway show at the invitation of France’s Chambre Syndicale. Appropriately enough, the concept for the new collection is an American in Paris -by way of space (Virgin Galactic anyone ?). "Envision a guy who lives in New York, travels to space, and lands in Paris", Hamilton says. "I’m going more futuristic with the fabrications, but still having the same rhythms I’m known for". Ground Control to Major Tim, is it ? More as we can pry it out of him.
Tim Hamilton presented this season's collection at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery. Like the previous season, the presentation left you with the feeling that this was the place to be to relax and wind down after the chaotic start to fashion week. The vibe was causal and relaxed but the clothes were fiercely good. A bevy of attractive models sported clothes inspired by old world charm. Sharp, crisp trenches over dapper straight leg pant. Knits were printed in stripes and bright blue layered over a dark pallet of parkas in grey and black. In the center of the model line-up, Hamilton reserved his most liberal use of color staging two models in head to toe scarlet. The collection was young, polished, and put together with a mischievous wink. 80s minimalism and German industrial design seemed to blend together quite nicely into militant boyish silhouettes. Hamilton has stuck to simple graphic prints and sober usage of color. The line is both rigorously youthful and confidently masculine, bouncing between 60s Bohemian roadwarrior and Mod elegance. The patent leather boots -once again made by ultra-cult designer Carol Christian Poell's Viennese cobbler- in black, and matte leather white pairs are incredibly chic and so severe. Known for his ability to balance abstract design with fine craftsmanship and guided by a philosophy that includes both his design background and his Iowa upbringing, Hamilton regularly designs with geometric details, innovative elements, and simple silhouettes. The final look lies somewhere between casual streetwear and refined tailoring.
Did I mention Tim Hamilton won the CFDA/Swarovski Award for Emerging Menswear this year ?

This is his menswear sophomore collection and with this first men’s show, Richard Chai established a distinctive handwriting. This season, he takes his knack for finely constructed coats and stellar knits to create an emo-chic collection of disheveled dandy looks. Boiled wools and muted plaids in washed cotton had an outdoorsy flavor, but Chai’s fresh blend of sharp tailoring and rugged style was equally perfect for city or country. The coats hang freely on the models with urban charm, while trousers go up and down the “slim-to-slouchy” scale. And, of course, savvy fall-friendly layering was popular among the looks that traveled down the runway. Reverse seams subtly highlighted the tailoring, and the designer’s placement of zippers as embellishment throughout the collection was masterfully controlled. His sense of volume and proportion made every model look elongated and powerful. The utilitarian cut of the pants, with a slightly dropped crotch, also felt refreshingly masculine, especially when tucked into a heavy boot. Textured cashmere cardigans and long johns proved Chai’s background in knitwear. But above all, he proved that fashion sense and manliness can go hand in hand.
Eddy Chai has been one of New York's most powerful tastemakers for some time now -if you've walked through East Village menswear boutique Odin, or walked past someone who has, consider yourself influenced- but his brother Richard has been left toiling away in womenswear. Until now, that is. His new collection takes the preppy look a few steps further, resulting in revamped peacoats and cardigans that manage to look a few decades ahead of the usual polo shirts and slacks. In other words, you'll be the best-dressed person at the Strand... for those critical times when you're aspiring for that title. Of course, it's a fall collection, so you'll also have your pick of impeccably cut flannel shirts and vividly colored V-necks to prepare for chillier times, along with a set of close-cropped pants of the kind you might expect from his brother...
