join the fight: art vs cancer!

come out to help bam pop fight cancer! on saturday, september 12th at the dragon's keep in provo, utah we will be joining forces with a band of other (much more talented than ourselves) funny book artists to peddle our arts and raise some funds for super awesome writer Jake Black who is battling cancer.

ABC News did a story about the event. hey, here's some video!...

you will be able to pick up some art of your favorite characters and support a really good cause at the same time! check out the list of amazing artists who will be there:

a little while ago our dear friend elsie called us up and told us she was about to embark on adventures in retail and open up a red velvet art store. we couldn't be happier for her and rva! it's an amazing accomplishment! to celebrate the grand opening and the month of love we have some exclusive prints there. and some bambots. ^__^ if you are in the area definitely stop by the shop. or check 'em out online!

when I was little one of the things I wanted to be was an astronaut. my dad built parts for a number of the shuttles NASA sent up in the 80s. that was super rad. I never got to go to space camp. but I watched the movie a thousand times! and I still stare at the stars.

scrapblog marketplace is live!

it seems like it was so long ago when we first got a call from this sweet little band of misfits from miami asking us to check out this thing they made called "scrapblog." at the time they already had like what, millions of scrapbloggers on their site? yet somehow we had not come across them before. needless to say we were blown away by the scrapblog app. it is the best thing to happen to digital scrapbooking EVER. what they created totally reinvented the medium! as content designers we had been steering clear of digital scrapbooking due to all the issues with piracy and infringement that are inherent in the format. scrapblog completely wiped away those fears for us. we were like "uh, where do we sign?"

BAM POP! is very privileged to be part of only a small group of lucky artists invited to join the scrapblog marketplace for its launch. being a part of this makes our cereal taste better and cartoons more funny ^__^

don't take our word for it. go see for yourself how rad scrapblog is. design some scrapbook pages with our art and your art and some other people's art (it's a huge collab!) and don't forget to send us a link so we can see your creations! and guess what, scrapblog will even make your pages into a book and send it to you! scrapblog is the new awesome.

we have been working hard on this for a while now, trying to get it right and we think we're finally ready to share. we'll start making t-shirts and other apparel available soon! first we'll start with baby and kids sizes then we'll work our way up to grown ups.

fine art prints & ice cream

a while back we started selling random prints of our art on etsy and our shop just for fun. sometimes with a toy even. we thought we'd get a little more serious, er a little bigger at least!

this is the original "ice cream social" painting. it's a tribute to a few of our favorite things--monsters, superheroes, and ice cream!

it took a few proofs, but the giclée turned out beautifully! the colors are so vibrant. it's printed on heavy watercolor paper and measures 14x18". it also looks amazing matted and framed (not shown).

Victionary loves BAM POP!

a little while ago, victionary invited us to be in the next book in their simplyseries™, titled simply pattern. well, now it's finally out and we're so thrilled to be a part of it!

cover to cover it's filled with some of the prettiest pattern designs around including work by some of our favorite artists like tado, jon burgerman, skwak, and julia rothman (an indie comics lover after our own heart...check out julia's book blog book by its cover--it's one of our favoritest blogs ever. seriously. put it at the top of your rss reader).

even the ninguins made it into the book! ^__^

Scrapbook Magazine loves BAM POP!

we finally got our copy of uk mag scrapbook magazine issue 29 which has a huge article (6 pages + a product feature) by fauve van maanen (she's rad!)

our stuff has appeared in other magazines, but this is our first cover feature and big article so it is extra special for us.

we are the future? be afraid!

it really is a rad article. sure we're a little biased, but fauve did a bang up job! check out the wicked awesome scrapbook pages she created to go along with it...

they even did a nice shopping guide ^__^

Our pop art gallery is full of amazing things created by super friends of BAM POP from all over the world. We thought it would be rad if we could spotlight some pop art on the products that were used in creating them. Pretty neat, huh?

Our retailers will be happy to learn that all of our scrapbooking stuff is now UPC barcoded. Yay! Personally, I am a little sad that we have to put them all over our artwork. Maybe because it kinda represents conforming to the establishment?

We were pretty happy to be able to go as long as we did without them. I mean, I see the benefit to the retail shop, I really can. I just think it's a little more hardcore to not have them. More punk rock yeah! It also had a more made-at-home feeling, to me anyway. Now we are a product. But I guess it is all a part of growing up. And now we get to reminisce about the good old days when we sang along with Sufjan Stevens while packaging stamps in our jammies and-- wait, err, we still do that. ^__^

Okay then, time to put on some Kimya Dawson and draw the new stamps!

Diva Craft Lounge loves BAM POP!

Diva Craft Lounge invited JJ to be on their radio show today to talk about all things BAM POP!

Their show is super fun. And oh gosh, listeners in 66 countries?! JJ was trying really hard not to think about that. I think he had fun though. Go listen to the show! :)

CHA, it was good to see you

We thought that after a year of being in business and not doing any marketing or anything it might be a good idea to let the world know about us. CHA Anaheim seemed like a good place to start. It is, afterall, supposed to be like the biggest scrapbooking and craft convention in the world, right?

When you become a CHA member they send you all these scary documents that talk about the show rules and stuff. One of the weirder ones says that unless you can set up your own booth by yourself (1 person) without the aid of anyone else and without the use of any tools in under 30 minutes you have to hire a teamster union dude to help you and you have to pay them like $100 an hour (or more!).

Now, we're not cheap by any means, but we are a little company (just 2 people) that pays for everything in cash. Plus it just seems wrong to pay somebody that much money to pop a few screws into some wood. What can you do.

So after a few visits to Ikea this is the set up we came up with. No tools needed and everything went up in about 10 minutes.

Pretty lo-fi, but since we are new exhibitors anyway, they stick us down in the dungeon with all the other newbies in our own special section. Next year we get to be upstairs with the grownups. Oh, and the funny thing is that nobody was going around making sure we were following the silly rules anyway. I guess it is an honor system!

Lots of rad people stopped by to say hi. Some old friends and some new. This is Chantel Mernickle of Treasured Memories and her awesome family. We love these guys! They are loads of fun. If you're ever in Edmonton, Alberta stop by their shop and pick up some BAM POP!

Martine was super sweet and gave me a copy of issue 10 of Scrap! Magazine, one of my new favorite publications from Holland. Actually, I don't read dutch so well, but I like to look at the pretty pictures.

There are some nice features on BAM POP in this one. And check out our homegirl, Fauve van Maanen, on the cover! She has some bad ass layouts in the issue including this one. It's our favorite ^__^

chipboard: concept to product

We had this idea to make some nested comic bubbles. Jen has been wanting to do something on chipboard for a while, so this seemed like the perfect medium for the nested bubbles.

Once we knew what shapes we wanted to make, we drew them up in illustrator and sent them off to a company that specializes in making dies for cutting these sorts of things. While the die was being worked on, I got busy drawing.

Here is the digital art.

Since the die line can't change, you are stuck with one set of shapes, so we thought it would be fun to do a variant colorway to get the most out of our die.

And this is how the final product turned out.

Ready to be used in scrapbooks or collages or whatever!
