With recent summer showers, the mosquitoes were out in force. I was swarmed so badly I'm surprised I have any blood left.<br /><br />Bug spray and a portable bug zapper improved the situation and I had a wonderful afternoon painting at one of my favorite locations - <a href="http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/state-park/1142.aspx">Hampton Plantation Historical Site.</a><br /><br />"Sunshine on Hampton Plantation"<br />Oil on cradled panel<br />Dimensions: 11" x 14"<br /><br />I had the pleasure of meeting internationally famous author and painter, <a href="http://www.kevinmacpherson.com/">Kevin Macpherson </a>when he was in Charleston this spring. Mr. Macpherson creates beautiful, <a href="http://kevinmacpherson.com/collections/20051">award winning paintings</a> using a limited palette of only 3 primary colors (yellow, red, blue) with white. In his <a href="http://kevinmacpherson.com/collections/20050">books</a> and workshops, he teaches the importance of mixing "harmonious colors and sensitive grays".<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SlqvdlO9nQI/AAAAAAAADJ8/SIfSKXeG2rU/s1600-h/Oil+paints+mixed+on+pallete+for+plein+air+demo.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SlqvdlO9nQI/AAAAAAAADJ8/SIfSKXeG2rU/s320/Oil+paints+mixed+on+pallete+for+plein+air+demo.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357787629456563458" border="0" /></a>Although I like to use a few more "tube" colors on my palette for convenience, I am working on mixing a wider range of grays and neutrals. Here's a photo of my palette showing the mixtures I've been experimenting with recently.<br />The shadows and sunshine in the painting "Sunshine on Hampton Plantation" gave me an opportunity to try out these new neutral mixtures while working with color harmony and accurate values. I feel the painting succeeds in portraying the effect of light and shadow on the white mansion due to the use of a wide range of warm and cool grays.<div class="blogger-post-footer">Katherine M Schneider Artist-Paint Charleston Daily.blogspot.com<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4928140380497602867-5319913134742982575?l=paintcharlestondaily.blogspot.com'/></div>Katherine Muschick Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09326709786215862656katherinesartwork@yahoo.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4928140380497602867.post-52488306594445059862009-07-10T19:00:00.000-07:002009-07-12T22:41:37.615-07:00"Evening Light at Hampton Plantation" A Plein Air Painting of a Historical Site<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SlhQd3CYYmI/AAAAAAAADI8/NTXBBln-oME/s1600-h/Plein+air+painting+on+location+at+Hampton+Plantation+July+09+view+4+resized.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 216px; height: 288px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SlhQd3CYYmI/AAAAAAAADI8/NTXBBln-oME/s320/Plein+air+painting+on+location+at+Hampton+Plantation+July+09+view+4+resized.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357120230677570146" border="0" /></a>I took advantage of the cooler weather today to paint "en plein air" (on location) at Hampton Plantation <a href="http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/state-park/1142.aspx">State Historical Site</a>.<br />The magnificent "Washington Oak" framing the plantation house's stately front portico with moss draped branches is the subject I chose to paint this afternoon. This <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etching">etching </a>(or "<a href="http://artmondo.net/printworks/articles/process.htm">printed painting</a>") is one in a group of artworks I made entitled "<a href="http://paintcharlestondaily.blogspot.com/search/label/Hurricane%20Art">The Storm Series</a>". In creating the etching "Waterspout", I used value changes and broad, diagonal strokes to express my impression of the wind and ominous cloud formations I experienced viewing the event.<br /><br />Although waterspouts rarely last more than a few minutes, cause widespread damage, or make landfall, they are still an alarming natural event. The sight of a large, churning funnel cloud heading toward land is a unnerving and memorable sight - even for a "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane">hurricane</a> hardened" viewer like myself.<br /><br />"Waterspout"<br />Variable wiped <a href="http://artmondo.net/printworks/articles/process.htm"></a>zinc plate etching on<a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/rives-printmaking-papers"> </a><a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/rives-printmaking-papers">rives BFK</a> paper<br />Image size: 27.5" x 25.5"<br />Framed size: 39" x 32"<br />Price: $450.00<div class="blogger-post-footer">Katherine M Schneider Artist-Paint Charleston Daily.blogspot.com<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4928140380497602867-7894916949631248168?l=paintcharlestondaily.blogspot.com'/></div>Katherine Muschick Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09326709786215862656katherinesartwork@yahoo.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4928140380497602867.post-795715044518646342009-05-30T20:33:00.000-07:002009-06-01T16:16:40.436-07:00South Carolina Tramp Brigade Living History Group Camps at Fort Moultrie<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SiJO0SF-JTI/AAAAAAAADEU/pRqkYMyXG8I/s1600-h/Living+history+reenactors+at+Ft.+Moultrie+5.30.09+resize.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SiJO0SF-JTI/AAAAAAAADEU/pRqkYMyXG8I/s320/Living+history+reenactors+at+Ft.+Moultrie+5.30.09+resize.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341918768131876146" border="0" /></a>Living historians from the <a href="http://www.trampbrigade.com/">SC Tramp Brigade </a>were among several groups of historical interpreters participating in events at <a href="http://www.nps.gov/fosu/historyculture/fort_moultrie.htm">Fort Moultrie </a>on Sullivan's Island today.<br />The groups are portraying life at the Fort during the period from 1809-1860 ( mainly 1859) when the US Army Regulars were stationed at Fort Moultrie prior to the <a href="http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/civil_war.htm">War Between the States.</a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SiJKQc10xlI/AAAAAAAADEM/mlV4OO6LnjU/s1600-h/Evening+in+anti-bellum+Fort+Moultrie+camp+resize.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 306px; height: 268px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SiJKQc10xlI/AAAAAAAADEM/mlV4OO6LnjU/s400/Evening+in+anti-bellum+Fort+Moultrie+camp+resize.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341913754495141458" border="0" /></a><br />The historians are conducting artillery drills, demonstrating firing muskets, and portraying the daily life of 19th century soldiers and their families. Originally I planned to leave the painting loose and "sketchy", but think I'll add a bit more finish to the work.<br /><br />I've been inspired to resume my efforts by seeing the work of three accomplished artists -<a href="http://web.mac.com/nancyguzik/iWeb/NG/Home.html">Nancy Guzik<span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span></a>, <a href="http://www.burdicklyon.com/">Susan Lyon,</a> and <a href="http://www.colemanfineart.com/bio.asp?artID=7">Mary Whyte</a>. Each painter brings a sense of spontaneity and freshness to their work which is built on mastery of draftsmanship, paint handling and creative vision.<br />All three artists have had their artwork featured in recent publications for the members of the <a href="http://www.portraitsociety.org/index.html">Portrait Society of America </a>of which I'm a member. Its charming setting among graceful live oaks near Charleston Harbor makes it a frequent subject of photo's and painting's of Historic Charleston.<br />Yesterday, the City of Charleston announced an $885,000 project to improve <a href="http://www.scgreatoutdoors.com/park-whitepointgardens.html">White Point Gardens</a> which includes plans to renovate and restore the 102 yr. old bandstand. A $273,500 contract will include repairs to the 1907 structure's brickwork and will lower the base from its present 6 ft. elevation to the original 3 ft.<br /><br />I'm posting my recent ink drawing of the bandstand with its 6 foot tall platform rising from ground.<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 309px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/Sa4fVb8yglI/AAAAAAAAC28/_5K9I2hCZT8/s400/White+Point+Gardens+Bandshell+ink+drawing+final+resized.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309215463856833106" border="0" /> I'll need to redraw the structure in the future when the base of the bandstand is lowered 3 feet.<br /><br />Although it will be nice to see the restoration, I wonder if the bandstand will look quite as grand or provide as nice a view when it's lowered 3 feet to the ground.<br /><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/Sa4o_jJ3Z6I/AAAAAAAAC3E/S8nai2wVmqg/s320/Little+Dancer+Statue+at+White+Point+Garden+resized.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309226082949883810" border="0" /><br />Hopefully the White Point Garden <a href="http://www.charleston.net/news/2009/mar/02/american_bandstand73500/">renovation plan</a> can be modified to include the long overdue placement of a plaque to identify the Charleston Children's Fountain (<a href="http://paintcharlestondaily.blogspot.com/2007/11/tribute-to-willard-hirsch-in-article.html">click here for article</a>) and its beloved "Little Dancer" bronze statue by Charleston sculptor Willard N. The Coastal Carolina Camellia Society (<a href="http://www.camellias-acs.com/display.aspx?catid=1,281&pageid=924">2009 Show</a>) says there are now over 20,000 named <a href="http://www.greennurseries.com/wintergarden">varieties of Camellias</a> with more being introduced every year. With so many new varieties available to gardeners, the older varieties-referred to as heritage or ancient camellias are sometimes overshadowed by the newcomers.<br /><br />For over 50 years my <img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SZzV2HpjxpI/AAAAAAAAC2I/DDCwKgO5JMk/s320/Rose+N+Muschick+in+her+Chas.+Camellia+Garden+resized.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304349586878613138" border="0" />mother, Rose N. Muschick has diligently collected and cared for an ever growing collection of camellias in her <a href="http://paintcharlestondaily.blogspot.com/2008/05/flowers-from-charleston-garden-for.html">Lowcountry garden.</a> Many of her camellias were gifts from friends who have long since passed away.<br /><br />I was in her garden today painting some of the many varieties currently in bloom. Here's a painting of a "Camellia in the Rain" that I painted from a flower on a bush that is one of her older, "historical" varieties of camellias. I think the variety was named "Princess".<br /><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 292px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SZzE2eNcWRI/AAAAAAAAC1o/SRYUSzbCbvg/s400/camellia+in+the+rain+color+resized+adjusted+2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304330901237029138" border="0" />I've asked several camellia growers if this is the correct name for the variety but they are unsure due to it's age. These camellias look as if they have a gold "crown" rising from the center of the bloom.<br /><br />A few of her camellia bushes have so many blooms the branches can hardly hold them.<br />What a cheerful sight in the middle of winter.<br />I hope these photos of camellias from <img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 332px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SZzJoE90V8I/AAAAAAAAC1w/K5s4Jbm3BUA/s400/One+of+Mom%27s+camellia+bushes+in+bloom+resized+front+circle+3+crop.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304336151500576706" border="0" />her winter garden brighten your day. It's a memorable sight.<br /><br />The vista is often painted with brightly colored azaleas in the Spring. It's rarely painted when the rich colors of Autumn reflect in the bright winter light on the pond, as I have here.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SX0N_Ssm3hI/AAAAAAAAC0A/zVBVk68E68s/s1600-h/Magnolia+Gardens+Plantation+House+Gallery+and+Gift+Shop+entrance+resized.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_X7M7a33yq-k/SX0N_Ssm3hI/AAAAAAAAC0A/zVBVk68E68s/s320/Magnolia+Gardens+Plantation+House+Gallery+and+Gift+Shop+entrance+resized.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295404117859425810" border="0" /></a>The painting is one of six artworks I have entered in the 2009 Winter Garden Festival <a href="http://paintcharlestondaily.blogspot.com/2009/01/magnolia-plantation-and-gardens-winter.html">Art Show </a>at Magnolia Gardens Jan. 24 - Feb. 28th. It's in their leaves and branches and huge, twisting trunks. It's in the grey moss and soft, filtered sunlight moving on the ground underneath.
