Rules for travelers change often. Effective since January 1, 2008 the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that a new rule regarding lithium based laptop batteries would be put into effect. The new rule discusses loose batteries in checked and unchecked luggage.

According to the new flight rule, loose primary lithium or lithium-ion batteries will not be allowed in checked baggage. This rule mainly applies to people who like to pack spare batteries for either long flights or vacations. The types of laptop battery that this rule applies to are laptop batteries, cell phone batteries, camera and camcorder batteries, etc.

In the TSA’s statement, which can be found on their website, it states that the potential fire hazard from these batteries is considered a security risk. Although lithium batteries are not allowed in checked luggage, they are allowed in unchecked carry-on luggage.

A member on the Eee PC User forums has decided to make a project that, more accurately than ever before, emphasizes the word BOOK in the term netbook. Member randyrsx has decided to demonstrate what can be done when you want to use a book to house your netbook and turn it into a protective case.

Several pictures show just how snug an Eee PC 901 can be stored away inside the protective shell of a hollowed out book, and could inspire those to use the idea as an anti-theft device, considering how much, when the book is closed, it would be difficult to guess that it wasn’t actually a book at all!

Dell Vostro 1500 CPU upgrade to Penryn T9300 2.5Ghz

have a fairly top spec Vostro 1700 here 2Ghz cpu, 160Gb hdrive, 2gig ram, 256meg graphics. Its prooved to be just too big and heavy for anything other than a desktop replacement so although it is a nice machine and games well in Crysis I will have to sell it on soon and have chosen a Vostro 1500 to replace it.

While dell were giving plenty of discount on the main site I bought a Vostro 1500(dell Vostro 1500 battery) with Intel Celeron Processor M 540 (1.86 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB) with the intention of swopping the cpu for a 2Ghz T7200 or maybe a Penryn chip.I have a spare 100Gb 7200rpm hard drive so was happy to only get a cheap slower 80Gb one with it.This is what I ordered for £350 after discounts

I have had it a few days now and thought I would see how well it performed with its celery cpu.

Out of the box it produced 3027 with 3Dmark 06

Farcry ran at max everything with ease.

Crysis GPU bench produced a playable 36fps @ 1440x900 low detail

dropping to 15fps @ 1440x900 medium detail.

I changed the dell supplied video drivers to forceware 169.04 and tried again.

3Dmark 06 was up now at 3161 but it only added one fps to the 2 crysis gpu tests.

Having overclocked the graphics on the V1700(dell inspiron 1520 battery) with ease and no overheating I thought I would try the same on this one, I used Atitool 0.27 and set the GPU at 600 and memory at 500.

3Dmark 06 went to 3738 and the Crysis GPU tests showed 1440x900 Med 20fps and low gave 41fps

Compare this against my XPS M1530 that had T7500 2.2Ghz cpu and 8600GT with DDR3 memory running much faster.

The XPS M1530 gave 4329 marks in 3Dmark 06 and 2 more points on the Crysis fps.

So the Celeron isnt doing too badly in the tests above.

I admit it may not do so well in cpu intensive benching but for my needs I was impressed how well it did perform.

I managed to get hold of a well priced Penryn cpu so I have now swopped the Celeron M540 cpu in my Vostro 1500 for a Penryn T9300 2.5Ghz (6meg cache)

Overclocked the gpu a tad (gpu 600 memory 500) and

Running cool under load, well as much load as I can give it. Had to scrape off the nasty sticky heatsink pad dell fit and use Artic silver. Took around an hour to fit, I was being very careful as its a major strip down to get the the cpu in the Vostro.

As I was unable to find a picture of the cpu and gpu heatsink assembly online this may help anyone considering doing the changeover.The gpu sink assembly should be removed before the cpu one as its added last and just traps the cpu sink on the outgoing side of the fan but I was a bit loath to remove it and found I could just about jiggle the cpu sink out from under it, though putting it back was a bit more of a struggle.With hindsight I might take the gpu sink off next time.

There is also to the right of the cpu sink another chip (northbridge?) which has the tail of the cpu sink on it, I didnt replace the pad between the sink and chip but relied on the original going back in exactly the same place. If doing it again I would get some pads so I could replace this one as it did look like it wasnt making very good contact when I removed the sink so chances are its got less of a good contact now with the reused pad.

1. Defragmet your hard drive regularly - The less your hard drive spins - less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly.

2. Dim your screen - Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra dell xps m1330 battery juice.

3. Cut down on programs running in the background - Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down dell xps m1330 battery life. Shut down everything that isn't crucial when you're on battery.

I noticed that my laptop power stayed at 6% even though I was on power for over two hours. I checked and noticed this…plugged in, not charging.

My laptop is pluged on but the hp dv6000 battery meter keeps telling me that it’s not charging.

Well…I have had the same problem with my DV6109. When the battery completely discharges due to lack of use and charging, it gets stuck at 0% and the red X appears across the hp laptop battery.

Basically, power down the laptop and then remove the AC adapter plug. Remove the dv2000 battery, perhaps wait a minute. Then put the battery back in and then plug in the AC adaptor plug. You then should see the charger light come on showing the battery is charging. Perhaps wait a few minutes before powering on the laptop to confirm that the battery is indeed charging. The problem seems to be in the logic (not sure where, if it is the software driver, etc.) when the laptop is on, it doesn’t get a charge. But with the laptop off, plugging in a battery after it has been removed - it works with a simpler charger system that doesn’t use the computers’s main CPU.

The problem is i shut it down fully charged. the next morning i star it up and it look ike it has been running as the dv6000 battery is down to almost half, i want to go away for a month and want to take it with me but cannot work on a half battery always. i enstalled the vista battery gadgets thingy, will that have an effect. when i shut it down it looks like there is some thing on still as a blue light stay blinking for a long time.

My laptop DV6500t turned itself on automatically after I shut it down. This caused the dv2000 battery to drain all the time. I sent it in for repair, but HP couldn’t reproduce the failure and just sent it back to me.

I have problem with my laptop, its 1y old, I bought it from a friend, and until now I didnt notice anything bad, because it was always plugged into power. Just got it to charge again.While the laptop is powered and in Windows XP, press and hold the POWER button until it dies. Then, remove the dv6000 laptop battery. Power it back up and enter Windows. Then, re-insert the hp laptop battery.

So I always remove the Hp dv2000 battery after I have powered down the laptop, and I have not had any battery problems since then!

I had the same issue my fix was a new cmos battery that was only $10.00 and install updated bios software from HP

I had the dv6000 battery problem where it showed my battery NOT CHARGING. I took it apart because my QUICKPLAY would not work either and the QUICKPLAY lights stayed on even after I shut down the laptop. I found that the black ribbon cable on the right (the other looks the same but you can see it is for the power button) was slightly kiltered in the flat socket it goes to underneath the area where the quickplay button is. I straightened it out and made sure it was pushed all the way in and locked and put it all back together and everything worked perfectly after that. About a month before that my POWER and SOUND didn`t work. I did the same thing to fix those problems. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THOSE CABLES EXACTLY RIGHT in there, IT MAY JUST BE YOUR PROBLEM TOO.

Some people dont realise that you should avoid short charges and discharges, if your batery does not go above 40% mabe its charge memory thinks its full. to fix this problem let the batery run fully down, then charge it all the way again. try it a few times if it doesnt work. and you have to go all the way, not let windows go into hibernation. to do that you need to get the batery low, then boot to some boot disk and let it sit till the batery dies.

HP has posted BIOS updates to address hp laptop battery problems as well as the auto startup on some.If you will post the full model number,someone can help you find your driver/updates page.

Build and Design

Dell received some much needed attention in 2007 with the introduction of the sleek, high performance XPS M1330 and XPS M1530 notebooks. Although these more expensive notebooks in the Dell lineup were praised for their looks and low weight, the Dell Inspiron 1520 was criticized for being yet another bulky and unattractive laptop. Dell listened closely to this criticism when they designed the new Inspiron 1525. The Inspiron 1525 is in fact 25% smaller, 30% slimmer and almost half a pound lighter than the Inspiron 1520.

In addition to the eight color options available on other Inspiron notebooks, the 1525 offers four new patterns. These designs are inlaid molds so there's no risk of the design coming off.

Although I wasn't a huge fan of the glossy inlaid "Commotion Pattern" design on our pre-production Inspiron 1525, I must say it looks flawless. I was highly critical of the paint application on the Inspiron 1420, 1520, and 1720 because the paint has questionable durability. The new glossy lid designs might be a magnet for fingerprints, but it certainly looks more durable than the old Inspiron paint jobs.

Screen

Display options for the Inspiron 1525 include a matte finish 15.4" Widescreen XGA (1280 x 800), a 15.4" Widescreen XGA (1280 x 800) with TruleLife (glossy finish), or a 15.4" "high resolution" (1440 x 900) glossy widescreen display. On the surface the lack of higher resolutions is a serious flaw in the design of the 1525. In truth, the overwhelming majority of "average" notebook users will think the WXGA resolution looks stunning.

The screen on our pre-production unit looks flawless from straight on and the horizontal viewing angles are great. Upper vertical viewing angles are good, but colors did begin to invert at lower viewing angles when the screen is tilted back.
