Savvy N' Coole!

Tis’ the season for festive drinks! A winter wedding or a holiday event wouldn’t be complete without the unique and frothy appeal of Coole Swan dairy cream liqueur. A blank palette for drinks this season, you can turn any cocktail into it’s own little winter wonderland. Light and refreshing, Coole Swan redefines cocktails into chic, buzz-worthy ornaments in the hand. Here’s my favorite way to drink this moonlight treat:

Coole & Dreamy 

1 oz Coole Swan 

2/3 oz vanilla vodka 

1/3 oz Frangelico   

Garnish: Strawberry and dark chocolate shavings.    

Combine all ingredients together in a shaker with plenty of ice. Shake well and strain into chilled martini glass.   Garnish with a fresh strawberry and shavings of dark chocolate.

Nothing is more comforting as a bride than knowing that you aren’t alone in the journey…and what better way to step alongside you for your experience than to have our in-house bride-to-be walk you through her own planning?

My name is Katelin, and I’m the newest addition to the Tara Wilson Events team. I’m also newly engaged and ready to share my walk (and sometimes run) toward the aisle with you. Stay posted as I will be guest blogging to give you a window into my design and planning process so we can all learn, laugh, and have fun with the numbered days we have left as 'single girls!'

For starters, I wanted to share these beautiful engagement pictures taken by one of the most talented girls I know, Dixie Dixon. Someone once recommended to me to look for images that really captivated me and then to find out who took those pictures; that's how you know who your photographer should be. My wedding-in-the-works has a vintage yet classic feel, and I knew exactly what I wanted. I've always been entranced in those old Ralph Lauren Romance advertisements, and here was my chance to be the girl I'd always envied. It's never to early to start your own fairytale--why not with your engagement pictures? And if you're looking for someone local, Dixie knows all about making it happen!

This Halloween, spook your guests with creative and eye-catching ideas:

1. Devilish Drink Station: Stock your station with both creepy cocktails and monster mocktails. My favorite Halloween cocktail is the Chambord Liqueur Royal de France blood-red martini; this extravagant black raspberry liquor gives the potion a red tint. Top it off with some gummy eyeballs to give it a Halloween twist. And in keeping with the hit movie, Twilight, try a 'Shape-Shifter' mocktail. 2. Trick or Savvy Treats: Offer your trick-or-treaters the sweet dessert-scape of their dreams. Make your entryway a spookily inviting atmosphere of wrapped orange cupcakes, giant swirly lollipops, packaged candies in giant apothecary jars, and miniature boxes of candy corn. Don't forget to dress the items up with festive tags. We love Tom Kat Studio's tags(featured above)!

3. A Ghostly Entrance: Make your front door scream Halloween. Buy white pumkins and paint your favorite Halloween silhouette (bats, ravens, or witches) in black on the outside. Pick up fall garlands at your closest craft store, put up bewitching signs, and make your guests as fearfully excited as they can be to enter your 'haunted' house!

4. Eerie Invites: Set the spooky tone with invitations to die for! Box invitations up and include cauldron-esque items like a black rabbits foot, a locket of hair, a skeleton bone, and a glass eyeball (use a large marble). Set the tone with a rhyme or poem that gives the details for the deadly delight.

5. Light Fright: Change your party pad into a darkened den by covering each can light with tissue paper. Just measure the circumference of the can light and then draw out a circle that will fit over the opening. AFfix the tissue paper to the base of the light with double-sided tape to cast a ghoul-like glow. Try blood red, burnt orange, or midnight black.

What's a girl to do when she has a special event to attend and feels a little less than "Little Black Dress" worthy? You know what I'm talking about ladies...when you feel as if there's nothing in your closet that fits or looks good? What do you wear then? I have a savvy standby...the dressy black tuxedo. It's perfect for any evening event and the jacket hides all my flaws when I'm feeling a bit, well you know, bloated!

With the tux you can glam it up (wear a sequin top and bold jewelry) or keep it classic (think black cami and pears). To really punch it up, invest in great pair of high heels that make a statement such as red satin or bright patterned pumps.

Having a "go to" outfit makes getting dressed for a special event so much easier. And knowing you look fabulous allows you to focus on what's really important...having fun!

With the season for winter whites on its way, it’s time to pay attention to the new showstopper of the chilly wedding season. Nudes are the new neutral; everything from camel and beige to champagne and blush create a monochromatic palette for a rich and flavorful dress.

There are several places to incorporate these barely-there shades into your big day—from the undergarments you wear to the dress that you walk out in, you’re sure to feel fresh-faced and current. One of my favorite bridal down designers, Vera Wang, showcased the gorgeous hues for next year's collection. Nude and ivory tones look best on women with fair skin. If you’re very pale, consider using one of these colors to compliment the color of your skin and add some warmth to your look. Always check to see if a dress you love comes in both white an ivory or nude—you might be surprised to find which one looks better on you!

Tonight is another night for a party in the life of an event designer, and now we're adding an interesting twist. We're showcasing a hip 'green' party--with everything from organic invitations to the beautiful setting of the great outdoors. This is sure to be a fabulous dinner and cocktail soiree on the lawn, with plenty of fun to go around.

Keeping with the theme, we're serving organic wines, micro brew beers, and all-natural cocktails. We're most excited about the PAMA-tini's we'll be making with PAMA Liqueur as tonight's signature drink. All natural and made in California, PAMA Liqueur is the perfect compliment to any drink--it's sweet yet tart--and it's sure to make a statement. Here's how we're making the signature PAMA-Tini's tonight, so you can join in the 'all natural' celebration yourself:

1 1/2 oz PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur
1 1/2 oz Vodka
1/4 oz Orange Liqueur

Shake and strain.

Bold shoulders, cinched waists, neon pops of color, leather, blinding lip hues, and mega statement jewelry. But this version carries a sophistication of it’s own, if you use it to your advantage!

How to Wear it: Who doesn’t need a suit these days? For both work and play, the blazer is the best of all worlds. Check out Chanel’s hot shades of fuschia or pink-orange lips to add a pop to your outfit, and don’t be afraid to mix and match. Pull out your favorite one-shoulder gown or micro-mini bodycon, and get ready to be in touch with your feminine side all over again!

How to Create it: If the 1980’s did something right, it was that they knew how to party! Give your party or reception a fun kick with a mirrored disco ball, some cheeky cocktails adorned with neon straws, GoBo’s of sexy and angular silhouettes (this is cute for couples!), and graphic prints on invitations. Statement jewelry as party favors or screen-printed tees of iconic bands make for a great kickback to the era!

If you haven’t yet noticed, fall is beckoning in a warm glow of gorgeous colors, just in time for the rich season of fall and winter weddings. Bold fuchsia, ruby red, emerald green, deep amethyst purples, heavy topaz turquoise, midnight navy, and sapphire blues are seen anywhere from runways to receptions.

There are a plethora of events that line up once you’re engaged, from engagement parties to showers, weekend getaways and the rehearsal dinner, there are plenty of times to express your personal style as the new future Mrs., so don’t be afraid to be bold.

How to Wear It: When you’re shopping, look for flirty takes on the skirt-suit in this rainbow of rich colors, fun-colored furs to wrap around as a cape, and (of course) sky-high pumps in purples and greens. Mix in some animal prints for a kick of personality.

How to Create It: Your reception is the perfect place to show your true [jewel] colors. Create a sophisticated ambiance by draping tables in royal hues, but be sure to pair it with a neutral to keep the balance. Centerpieces can bring out the bright colors and look great paired with oversized rhinestone detailing. If you’re on the conservative side, you don’t have to go all out, just pick some details to accent. Think about tinting the room in your favorite jewel-tone lighting scheme, or have your bridesmaids in bold and bright frocks!

Kara and Tera from Suzie Q Frames of Franklin, TN

I just love meeting new people, especially the interesting and creative types! I had the pleasure of meeting several at the CL Country Fair this weekend. First, I met the adorable girls, Kara and Tera, from Suzie Q Frames when I stopped them to inquire about their fabulous aprons. They made them! Look at the details...from the bird and the breast cancer ribbon (to honor Susan Kreal) to the vintage fabric and polka dotted ties. Too cute! And so are their handmade frames. When I asked how much of the frame they Tera replied, "everything!"

And speaking of someone who does everything, Gina Bishop is a firecracker! This homegirl is a modern crafter, creating pieces that this southern girl just couldn't pass up! From sweet owl pillows made from vintage fabrics to original artwork made from bottle tops, Gina turns old and boring into new and glam! Fingers crossed, we should be seeing more of her and her company, Homegirl, in the pages of Country Living Magazine. Keep an eye out for her...she's going places!

At the Springfield Antique Fair with my new cooper bucket.

Wow! I made off with a ton of wonderful loot this weekend in Ohio! Saturday we went back to the Country Living Fair for another round of shopping and then headed to Springfield, Ohio to the Antique Fair.

I picked up two beautiful milk glass cake plates for Savvy Sweets, an interesting oil painting for the kitchen, a wire locker basket (for under $12...a rare find!) and a beautiful cooper bucket with a great patina. Along the way I also scored a few antique dish towels that I think would be fabulous as pillows.

While all these goodies make me happy, the best part of this whole road trip was spending quality time with my mother and meeting the interesting people behind all the beautiful crafts. Oh my goodness...Oh My Goodness...OH MY GOODNESS! The CL Country Living Fair was worth every minute of the 17 hour drive! Where do I even begin? I was literally dancing with glee as I walked in and saw the savvy selection of vendors!

At the entrance we were greeted by the sights and smells of fall with a lavish display of pumpkins, gourds, mums and fall leaves. The first tent we entered was that of the Earth Angels. I'm absolutely in love with Jennifer Lanne's mixed media paintings!

From there we progressed to The Apple Tree Mercantile where I swooned over the hand crafted wool pillows, purchasing not one but two for my living room! A short walk down I spotted a booth that my client, Deziree, would love; Jan Blough creates custom silhouette necklaces, ornaments and much more! My excitement was almost more than I could take and we hadn't been there more than 15 minutes!

The best way I can describe the fair is eye candy and inspiration for the creative soul! And inspired I was from the moment I walked into McMaster & Storm. With a tag line, "a petite department store," who wouldn't fall in love with crafting? They had all the ephemera one would ever need! I just couldn't help myself...I kept buying things!

Before I left Texas I pulled a few images from magazines and catalogs of items I hoped to find while on this trip. To my delight today I landed two of the three "must have" items, including a rustic crown for holding candles. I can't wait to tell you what I discover tomorrow!

Mercy...I must admit...that drive was a whip! Man, oh man! We live in a beautiful country but I think I would prefer to see it from the air going forward!

No seriously, my mother and I had a wonderful drive from Arkansas to Ohio. We left this morning at 6:15 a.m. and pulled in to our hotel around 8:30 p.m. We traveled through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Some of the highlights include a quick glimpse of downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch as well as row upon row of corn fields in Indiana. I did realize that my graphic design friend, Eric Kass, lives a short distance (100 miles or so, but who's counting?) from our direct path to Ohio. I thought about detouring for coffee with him but was to eager to roll into Columbus before night fall. Maybe on the way back?

I apologize that I really don't have many pictures to show. Since I was driving the whole time and my mother really doesn't know how use my iPhone, we were limited. I did teach her how to scroll up and down the screen so she can read me my email messages while I'm driving! Priorities, right?

Check back tomorrow...we're headed to the fair bright and early...I hope to have lots to report!

Savvy Road Trip!

I'm 5 hours in to my 17 hour road trip to Columbus, Ohio for Country Living Magazine's Country Fair. I've made it from Fort Worth, Texas to my hometown of Mulberry, Arkansas...population 1,444.

Since it's such a long trip I decided I needed a partner-in-crime for this little outing...who better to take along than my 70 year old mother, Wanda! After all, she introduced me to Country Living, both the lifestyle and the magazine.

I hope you'll follow along as these two savvy southerners make our way across this great country to enjoy one of the most amazing craft and antique fairs produced. To learn more about the CL Country Fair, check my post from last year.

This week marks the one year anniversary for the publication of the oh-so-helpful-book The Flavor Bible by authors Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg. You might recall this must-have guide to herbs, spices and seasonings won the 2009 James Beard Book Award earlier in the year.

Page and Dornenburg have put together the savviest guide to flavors, which allows the reader to cross reference literally any ingredient and find others that will be a compliment. Additionally, the book is dotted with quotes and inspiration from leading chefs from across the country.

One of the benefits of being on the fringe of the media is getting invited to fun events like the Scotch Tasting I attended Thursday night. The Dalmore sent their third generation master blender, Richard Paterson, to teach us Texans a few things about this legendary whiskey. We learned to sip, spit, sip some more, swish, and swallow. The mostly female crowd was treated to three of the six Single Highland Malt whiskies: The 12, The Gran Reserva and my personal favorite, The 15. We paired The 15 with a bite of dark chocolate to release the spiciness of the scotch.

In addition to all the pointers for tasting scotch, (Did you know you should vigorously fling your first pour of scotch out of your glass? This helps clean the glass and eliminate any odors.) Richard provided some historical facts about this beverage. The term "scotch on the rocks" comes from a time when men would walk down to the snow covered river beds and pick up stones to place in their warm scotch. Interesting, huh?!

My favorite part of the evening was discovering one of The Dalmore's slogans is, "I Shine...Not Burn!" So remember that the next time you order a scotch and make it The Dalmore whiskey.

Savvy Tequila Day!

Let’s face it, there’s a reason no one writes songs about cognac. It’s just doesn’t have the same revelry inducing qualities as Tequila – the libation that is the subject of no fewer than, oh I don’t know, about a million songs?! So when National Tequila Day rolls around on July 24, you can bet we’ll be doing at least two things: Singing along with Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and drinking our favorite Tequila while we entertain south-of-the-border style!

Need ideas to create your own fabulous fiesta? Grab a shot glass -- or caballito -- and read on!

1. Nothing says, “This is the best party ever!” like a margarita bar. Mix it up with fixins for a variety of drinks, like a sweet and spicy Tex-Mex Martini, an oh-so-refreshing Mexi-cone (margarita snow cones), and the head honcho of them all – the Uber-rita made with the best Tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and sugar.

2. The only thing better than grilled chicken and shrimp is Tequila-infused grilled chicken and shrimp! Pump those babies up with a shot or two and you’ve got kabobs your guests will never forget (no matter how much Tequila they’ve had!).

3. Liven up the landscape with Agave plants and other succulents.

4. Hire a mariachi band or set up a karaoke machine and let your friends belt out “Mas Tequila” by Sammy Hagar! (take lots of pictures!)

5. For décor, string small piñatas between light paper lanterns, use empty Tequila bottles as vases, or simply fill clear bowls with limes.

6. Instead of typical place cards, make cards that feature unusual or little-known facts about Tequila, margaritas or Mexico. For example, the world’s first frozen margarita machine was invented on May 11, 1971 in Dallas, Texas (one more reason to love those crazy Texans!).

7. Nobody loves free stuff more than I do…so make sure every guest gets a party favor! A CD of the aforementioned Tequila-themed songs would be quite appropriate.

8. For a cute invitation, hand-deliver mini tequila bottles with the invite attached.

9. Just for fun, have a lime-juggling contest. The winner receives… wait for it…a bottle of Tequila!

10. Finally, so no one parties until the Tequila Sunrise(s), wind the party down with plenty of bottled water and sopapillas.
