This week I haven't had a single original or interesting thought. I'm even boring myself. I think Randy's brain melts anytime I open my mouth. Its just one of those weeks. I'm kind of down. A little lonely. Sort of tired. No extreme feelings. Only the blahs. I go visit Mae everyday and feel like a waste of flesh. When will I learn how to talk to people? Maybe by the time Wolfgang does? I doubt it.
Wolfgang, on the other hand, is spectacular. I think we may, in fact, be attached at the hip. We get up at the same time every morning. I feed him and change him and then when he goes down for a nap, I work out. If he happens to wake up before I get back, he gets a photo session with Randy. Always productive.I take him to Mae's with me and to the store and on walks (and to the beach and to the post office and out to hang laundry....). Don't ask why I have this thing on my head. At night he eats some butternut squash and I give him a bath and then we hang out on the bed putting the jammies on.After that, Randy is usually done studying. So between 7 and 8, we play cards. This is my favorite time of day.

Winter?

So far, this has been the best winter ever. We've had a couple of bad weeks, but really, its been pretty darn sunny. The sun was out this morning when we got up. We had a rough, sneezy, screamy night, so we were groggy for a while....

Now I'm getting all the laundry done so we can go out. Wolfgang is waiting patiently.Yesterday we went out and walked around in the hood. The trees around here are crazy.These palms are my favorite. They're growing out of one clump....does that make sense?The streets are very interesting. Most of the houses are different and there in a jungle in everyone's yard. I love it.This is the crazy cactus house. Its pretty scary. There's even a cactus growing off the roof. See it? And check out all the Dr. Seuss vegetation.

The King's new home

We pass this small patch of African woods in the countryside every time we go into Stellenbosch. Randy's been dying to see what it looks like inside. And I just love these broccoli trees.
On Sunday we went into town and on the way back we pulled down the dirt road that leads into the forest.
Its like the road in Lord of the Rings, except for the road signs......... and the lack of mythical creatures....
There is only a short stretch of trees. I bet there were more at one time or another...

But then the trees stop and the landscape looks VERY different. Maybe there weren't more trees than this. Maybe somebody planted them over 100 years ago just because.
This is probably more of an indigenous look....And guess who we found at the end of the road!

We were curious to know if/how popular the name Wolfgang is in the US. By scanning the Social Security Service’s top 1000 most popular boy names for 2008, we were not really surprised to see that Wolfgang does not register at all. Instead, there is an interesting trend in names. Do you see a pattern?

Weighty Issue

Its amazing how many of my emails with friends are all about trying to lose weight. Now, let me say this: I'm a lucky girl to have gotten my mom's tall genes. Up until now, it has really helped with the weight distribution. But now I'm actually having to work really really hard!
Bummer!! Mama, how did you have 6 kids and still look as great as you do??

I was going to start exercising 6 weeks after Wolfgang was born, but, well, that just didn't happen. I did, however, start working out at Curves on March 24th. When you start, they weigh and measure you. So last week was my 3-month mark and I was weighed and measured again.

After 3 months straight of working out, I've lost a whopping 5 pounds. I've been living in my workout clothes for this long only to have lost 5 pounds???
This is the picture I keep looking at and telling myself "It could be worse."

I lost a lot of muscle while pregnant because I couldn't do anything. So the Curves lady said I probably gained a bit in muscle weight. And my measurements have ALL gone down, so thats good. But really, its the stomach. My rear and legs are a size 6 and my waist (waist? what waist?) is a size 10. Darn it!
But I have dropped 3 of those pounds in the past month, so hopefully they'll just melt right off! (like ice cream in the sun....Mmmmmmmm ice cream......)

I've been doing lots of activities to supplement the workouts. Lots of walks with the Goo.

(Good grief lady. Do your hair will you!)

Still, I feel like I should be doing more. What is it thats holding me back???? I'll let you know when I figure it out.

Laundy day

Or shall I say, "Scary Heather" day?

We never had days like this last winter. And by "days like this" I don't mean "Scary Heather" days. We had plenty of those. I mean beautiful, warm, sunny, breezy days. Yesterday I hung the laundry and the Wolf and I sat in the back courtyard on a crate. Randy snapped some lovely photos and kindly cropped out my long flowery socks and flip-flops combo.Wolfgang l0ves it outside.

He does a lot of grinning for no reason.

This is where we park, by the way. It is behind Mae's house. Our back courtyards are connected by this gate.
Later on, I ran over to Mae's with Wolfgang to return some dishes and Randy had gone in to school. I came back and soon noticed that Enkidu was missing. There is literally no way out of our house for a dog. I looked everywhere and then started to panic. Wolfgang started crying and I was looking everywhere and whistling. I soon came to the realization that he had gotten out somehow. The stroller was in the trunk of the car (so I thought), so I grabbed Wolfgang (who was screaming) and ran out the front gate and into the street. About 2 (long) blocks down, out in the middle of the intersection, I spotted Enkidu. So I went running down the street in my flip flops, with Wolfgang still hollering and balanced on my hip. Enkidu sees me and does his "I'm guilty" maneuver, which is to droop his ears and roll over on his back with his paws sticking up. Thats fine, only he was in the middle of the street. So I jostled the poor Goo at top speed until I got to Enkidu. I had to pick him up and wedge him under one arm (he's so overweight!) and balance Wolfgang in the other arm (chubby and wriggly) and make my way home. The neighbors were out and watching by the time I got home. I said, "Shows over folks."
Apparently the show wasn't over until I had wrestled with the keys and unlocked the gate with two uncooperative beings in my grasp.
We figured out that Enkidu can shrink to half his size in order to squeeze under the front gate. I guess he figured that out too (for the first and last time)

Oooooooh!

So, because the Wump refuses to set foot on our grass, Randy has to walk him every single evening. Randy's been telling me that the sunsets are spectacular, but even 3 blocks away, I can't see it. So last night I went with him. All the way there it looked like any old evening (on the west coast of Africa......)
But then we emerged onto Beach Road and Bam! Behold the sunset!I couldn't believe it. Randy said, "Oh its nice, but its nothing compared to some of the others." (I think we'll be dragging the Wolf out a little more often in the evening)

At first he (the Goo) was a total grump
(I had to lighten the pictures of us because the sky overwhelmed us)But I showed Wolfgang my "happy face" and he eventually showed us his.

Its hard not to be happy when you're sitting on the beach on a perfectly warm evening (in OUR January) looking at a sky like this.

I can't believe this is in our backyard.....

It was wonderful. Definitely the nicest day of the year, and that INCLUDES the summer days.

It was warm and cool all at the same time. So maybe lukewarm? Randy (who is sick) had a hard time focusing on the studies and I had a hard time.....uh....ok, I didn't have a hard time doing anything.

Our Weekend

Lets see, what have we been doing......uhhhhhhhhhh........errrr........ummmmmmmm......Oh yeah! Nothing! Not! A! Darn! Thing!
Randy's been studying and working at a conference. I've been hanging out with the Wolf. But the sun's been out.

Bonus!

In the winter it shines in all our front windows in the morning and warms up the living room. So nice!(If you look carefully you can see a whole patch of new baby hairs growing on the Goo's head)

After Randy left to study (and Wolfgang and I had our own time with God at Mae's house) the two of us moseyed down to the market. Really the "market" is just a bunch of stalls selling the same worthless junk, but its right on the beach and on the weekends its pretty loud and lively. I strapped Wolfgang into his front-pouch and we wandered among the crowds and looked in all the stands and were offered many "quality prices!". That was our excitement for the day.

The Strange Phenomenon

I promised myself that after having a baby this wouldn't turn into a "baby blog", but lately, well, we haven't left the house. So this week, its a baby blog.
I finally DID leave the house yesterday. We HAD to get out. Wolfgang was getting so restless and I was going nuts. It was cold out, but at least it wasn't raining. We did all kinds of things. Walked Wumpus, went and saw Mae, went to the Post Office. Randy came with us to the post office (don't know why I capitalized it in that last sentence and not this one.....I've leave it just as an example of my inconsistencies) and when we got home Randy was like, "Heather, look!"

I couldn't believe it!

I've seen my friends' pictures where their baby is asleep on their chest, or on the dad's chest. You know, all cuddled on the couch. Not so our Babygang. He never just "drifts" off to sleep. Its always a screaming fight and then PLUNK-unconscious. But yesterday he totally "drifted" to sleep in his stroller. Randy and I marveled at the sweetness and the peace of the situation. No fits! No hollering!I stood there and stared at his long eyelashes and his soft little cheeks and his "I don't have teeth" lips. I love that baby-head. Cute little stinker!

In other news, I got a text from Melissa in Chicago telling me that Michael Jackson had died. Its always so sad to hear about a star's death. Especially someone as tormented as he was. What a bizarre life he had. Was he happy? What about his kids? Did he have anyone in his life who loved him for something other than his famous name? Where is he now?

Lubbock, Texas.
Occasionally referred to as Lubbuttock, Texas.....
The land of the dirt and the home of the..... dirt. This long, flat town occupies a slab of caprock in western regions of the Lone Star state. There are tumbleweeds here. And tornadoes. And it often rains mud. And after living in Chicago, I can say that Lubbock is STILL the windiest place I've ever lived.
One of my favorite photographers (Ashley Rogers- http://ashleyrodgersphoto.blogspot.com/) snapped these shots (and barely made it back inside before her house got sandblasted). This is, in fact, a giant wall of dirt. A dirt tsunami, if you will.
Notice the low, flat earth and the infinite sky. There are no "sky obstructions" here. I think the tallest building is 19 stories? And any decent trees huddle around the University campus to trick the visitors. Depending on which way the wind blows, you are assaulted by either the fragrance of oil or the aroma of stockyards. Have you ever tasted the smell of cow manure? It doesn't taste like chicken.

I realize there is quite a bit of green in these photos. Don't let it lure you into the false belief that vegetation abounds. This is pretty much it......

Who can resist blue makeup?

I was sitting on the floor with the Wolf this morning putting on my makeup. Randy is gone all day, its raining and I probably won't see another soul. But I like to put a little make-up on everyday because it makes me feel better (to quote Cathy's mom, "Put some lipstick on. You'll feel better.").

In the package my friend Paige sent me, there was a compact full of blue and green eyeshadow. I picked up some brown eyeshadow and was about to do the usual, but then I looked outside and I thought, I'm stuck inside all day. I'm going for the blue.I felt 11 all over again. Now, don't get me wrong. I've used some of this blue and green, mixed with other colors. I *love* it. But today I went full 80's. I even found some bright pink lip-gloss.
I said, "Wolfgang, this is what your Mama looked like when she was 11......minus 24 years of aging......and plus a few zits.......and throw in a bad perm......

He didn't notice.

Then suddenly I remembered that I actually HAVE a picture from my Beast years. I scrounged it out and scanned it for your viewing pleasure. I think I was 12 in this picture....Behold the precision hairstyle. And the jammin' shirt and matching broach.....

A Letter

Dear Wolfgang,
At some point in the future, you might be reading over these old blogs. If you are, there are a few important things you should know about your daddy. For starters, your diapers make him dry-heave. The first time he had to change a dirty diaper, I was in the bath tub and he was trying to change you on the bed just outside the bathroom door. I head some funny noises and I said, "Everything ok out there?" Your daddy said, "I just dry heaved three times in the corner!"
Apparently you had unleashed the "worst diaper" in history.
Last night we were playing cards and you decided to give him an early Father's Day gift. Neither he or Enkidu appreciated it.

I want you to know how hard he is working on his research and how much pressure he has on him at this point: He's working extremely hard. And the pressure is heavy! But he makes sacrifices to be home with us. He can hardly stand to be away from the house because he wants to see you growing. He misses you when he's away. To him, you are one of the most wonderful things he has ever seen and ever been a part of.
I know that Father's (parents) make mistakes and its not always as easy showing love to a teenager as it is to a baby. But I want you to know that your dad is so proud of you. He talks to you and plays baby-games with you and wonders what you'll be and do. He loves you with all his daddy-heart. YOU are his greatest Father's Day gift.

So Randy was holding Wolfgang on his lap and he said, "Goo... (we call him goo. It was his first word. Although, it was more like "Ngoo!")So Randy said, "Goo, are you going to be a mouth breather like your mama?"

What??? **cries of indignation**
"A mouth breather?" I cry indignantly. "I'm not a mouth breather!"
Oh my gosh! I think. Am I a mouth breather?

I looked through my pictures and I think there is enough evidence to suggest that I am not, in fact, a mouth breather. Maybe at night.......

I wonder what The Goo does when I'm working out. Is he sad? Does he miss me?
Not as long as he has access to the hand.

Visiting

Yesterday it was just me and the Wolf again. It was nice out so I wanted to go see Mae (and we both got decked out in a few of Mae's gifts. Wolfgang in his blue bear suit and me in the new aqua "gown" and scarf)Shes been knitting a patchwork blanket and she wanted me to see it all laid out. This is her bedroom. Her little pink bed is always made so perfectly. The blanket she's knitting is on the bed next to it. We love hanging out in Mae's bedroom. Everyday she gives him a kiss on behalf of the grannies who don't get to kiss him. He loves her. She calls him, "my Beautiful".
When I went over there, I entered and followed her through the dining room and into the living room. I walked behind her to "my" chair and sat down with the baby-head. She was facing her chair with her back to me. She looks back to the dining room door and says, "Heather, where are you?" (only she pronounces it the South African way, Heetha)
I said, "Here I am, Mae. Behind you."
Silence.
"Heetha, where are you?" Still looking at the dining room door.
So I stuck my arm out and waved my hand in front of her. She turned around with a surprised look on her face and we both started laughing. I think she might be needing a new hearing aid battery. I've also noticed the volume on her TV has gone up a few notches in recent weeks. We can hear her soaps from this side of the wall.....

As the old granny in The Grapes of Wrath would say, "Praise the Lawd for the vit'ry!"When I get a package, its not a casual, "Oh how nice" feeling that wells up within me. Its an all out explosion of dancing and clapping and fists punching the air and shouts of "Yeh-heh-hesss!!!
I love packages! *LOVE* THEM!!! I don't care if there is only squirt gun inside! I love them! Its so fun to think that somebody took the time and care to get me something or make me something and then send it ALL the way to Africa! And I know what a pain in the tookus the post office is, so packages to me are like big fat bars of gold! I don't fight for too many issues, but I'll fight for these. And I've gotten a couple of wonderful ones lately. Some new movies and a fabulous long sleeves t-shirt from Old Navy! Thank you Gene and Amanda! Thank you Small Group!
But then my friend Paige Palmer (I know! Sounds like a superhero name doesn't it?) has been collecting a bunch of little luxuries for me and she sent it out (in her non-existent spare time. She's a lawyer!) about a month ago. But Customs took one look at it and thought, "Na, I think we'll keep this one."
They do it randomly. If there isn't a "value" or if one tiny box isn't marked, or if they think its worth too much to be a gift, they keep it and either tell me I have to get a "local quote" on its value or I have to fork over like $200!!! So this box didn't have a value on it and they wanted me to get a quote or they were going to send it to their warehouse and auction it off!!!!
(they've threatened to do this before!)
Thievery!!
Unbridled corruption!!
So I pitched a fit! A big fat emailed fit (and a phone fit and a faxed fit). After holding onto it for weeks and telling me I couldn't have it, they finally just gave up and sent it to me!
Yeh-heh-hessss! I win! Praise the Lawd for the vit'ry!

Ubergreen

We went back out to Paarl on Sunday and I was *SHOCKED* at how green the grass was. Its taken me this long to realize that winter is the green season in the western cape. When we moved into this place our grass was non-existent and now its a jungle.
Anyway, all the seasonal trees (and vineyards) have turned colors, but the grass is like....chartreuse (my favorite!)

The vineyard leaves have all fallen off, but the grass beneath them has sprung up fast. Interesting patterns.Although I've been surrounded by breathtaking beauty all my life (having grown up in Lubbock.....) I'm still able to appreciate the landscape here.Even in the cool rainyness the guys are out selling their "naartjies".

I'm not in Lubbock anymore, thats for sure.

Adventure

Randy was at school all day today so it was just me and The Wolf. We didn't do too much. We went and saw Annette (the older woman who also got her PhD under Randy's adviser. She lives around the corner and we haven't really seen her yet).

Then we went and hung out with Mae. Mae asked me if I wouldn't mind coming over for a "Word of prayer". Why does praying out loud make me nervous? Like, I want to turn and run for the hills.....Maybe because its such an intimate thing? I don't know.
But today we went and Wolfgang wiggled around on his blanket on the floor and Mae and I had a "Word of prayer" together. I think I just about cried through the whole thing. It was so cool to hear a Jewish woman of 93 talk to her protector and provider and savior. I blubbered out my own praise to God and then we had tea in the British fashion.

Anyway, near bedtime Randy was still at school so me and Wolfgang went through his bedtime rituals with just the dogs.He got a bath and ate some cereal (yes we're starting that. After the sweet potato incident this weekend I figured, what the heck). Then we hung out on the electric blanket and sucked on our hands and pulled our sock off over and over again.I was talking to the baby-head and I said, "Look at us, Wolfgang. Its just me and you and the dogs, alone in Africa. It might not feel like an adventure, but it is."He's finding his way in life and we're finding it with him. Sometimes its hard. Sometimes its boring. Sometimes life here is slow and lonely. But I have a feeling that once we move away this will all seem like one big fat adventure. Even the quiet nights like this one.

I wish y'all could squeeze him. He's so squeezable.....

Radny are so smart

Sometimes I wonder how he can tolerate my banal conversation topics.
"Today I was sitting here pulling Wumpy hairs off Wolgang's binky when all of a sudden bla bla bla..."

One of Randy's articles just came out in the Journal of Northwest Semitic Languages.
So maybe I can't understand half the words in the article, but Ooooh! Look at the pretty red cover!! And look at his name in the table of contents! So cool!He used Wolfgang's name in his examples of HOAC....wait let me see if I can remember what that stands for.... Higher order act of communication? Is that right Randy?
Or is it Healthy Onions Action Coffee? Or Herbal Orthodontist After Corks!???
I don't remember....

Anyway, this is one of 4 (is it 5 now?) publications that Randy has coming out this year. Most doctoral students don't publish at all (I'm bragging), but Randy has been pumping out the pages (I'm jealous). I'm just so proud of all he's accomplished since being here.

Get Your Baby Away From My Mother.....

Thats the phrase I heard more than once as we ate dinner with the Koetze's. Remember we drove out to Paarl a few weeks ago when Gideon and Manitza were house-sitting for his parents? Well, his parents got back from a camping trip in Namibia and wanted to have all of us over for dinner. They were fun. For starters, they've added an extra dog, Diesel (A Bull Mastiff) to their brood of 2. He's only a year old and already nearly 100 pounds. He was a sweet sweet dog. Randy got a tongue right in the eye....They were also dog-sitting their other son's Scotty-doggy. He's the little wiry black one (his name is Batman...)
Anyway, Mrs. Koetze offered to hold the Wolf while I ate. I looked up to see her shoveling sweet potatoes down his gullet. I said, "Oh, I guess this is his first solid food..." She couldn't believe it. Gideon looked nervously from me to her and said, "You must get your baby away from my mother!"
But Wolfgang like it and it wasn't too much......
He warmed up to everyone pretty quickly.
Later on Gideon's mother gave me this chicken bone and insisted that Wolfgang chew on it. So many experiences, so little time.....

Its amazing how little time I've spent at the computer lately. There are 2 reasons for that. The first one is that it has been a warm sunny week. Last of the Mohican's...

Its also been a high-maintenance-baby week. Wolfgang has this knew noise to express boredom. Or tiredness. Or hunger. Or maybe he just does it because he knows it annoys the tar out of us. Its this raspy, grunty, loud "Oooo!" And when he does it with his fingers in his mouth (which he's mastered), it sounds more like, "Unnnnnn!" And he does it over and over and over again. So when we first moved in here, our washing machine hose didn't fit the outside tap. Randy found a washing machine repair shop around the corner and the owner sent his helper-guy home with Randy with a box of various attachments. He got it working. But then, a few hours later, the guy came back and said that the owner forgot to charge Randy. (Randy had asked the owner how much and the owner had specifically said "no charge!") But this guy looked like he could use the money. He's maybe in his 30's or 40's (white guy, pretty rough looking). So Randy gave him the R25 that he was asking for and made sure the guy understood that "This is for fixing our washer." But then the next day the guy came back asking for several hundred rands and said, "I'll pay you back."
Randy said no, which was good because he would have been here ringing our doorbell everyday asking for money. We found out later that he lives in the drug house around the corner.
But for the next few days Randy would text me from school saying, "No sign of plumber-boy?"
Thankfully, no.
So today our car wouldn't start. Major Bummer. Bad timing. Randy went around the corner to a little automotive place to see if they had a mechanic who could come look at it. Who did they send? The ubiquitous and multi-talented Plumber-Boy.

Heather Kay

One of my favorite people just had a baby. I like to call her Crazy Heather.

She and her husband Jeff were in our small group back in Glen Ellyn. I was the quiet sane Heather and she was the loud wild Heather.
I miss her :( She's like my doppleganger......except the opposite.....

They just had their first baby; Adeline Scarlet. Heather has a blood clotting condition and was unable to get an epidural. She had a long hard labor and delivery. The cool thing about this situation is that the other small group girls came in and were her "family".

I'm so proud of her for making it through. I've been blubbering over this photo all afternoon. I wish I could have been there.

Wolfgang goes to Gordon's Bay

Another nice day today. Man, I love it.
Gordon's Bay is located up the mountain right next to Strand so we decided to go look at it again. We'd been there before but hadn't gotten out to look around. Apparently, we've seen all there is to see there. Still, it is a cool little town. Considering its packed with B&B's, you'd think there would be a lot of little shops. I think we found 5.......There was a cool book/shell store. We could have spent all day in there looking at books.And then there was this cute little alleyway. You can see the ocean at the end of it.In this alley we discovered where Starbucks must have gotten their logo......
We stopped in front of a convenient store to see "Toby".

He's 3 months old. Aw!The rest of the place is just sea and sand and ships and mountains.
