However, Martin Jol has left the club.

You don't need me to tell you that our defending was bad, and miserable at times, but there was a slight change in the atmosphere. The story broke during the game that Jol had agreed to leave the club, and that this home game against Getafe would be his last. The fans were singing his name, ever more so than usual, and it was obvious that a special bond was coming to an end.

A true Spurs man, who genuinely loved the club and wanted what was best for it, is leaving in a bad way. Ever since the terrible PR disaster that saw club officials contacting Juande Ramos for the job earlier this season, Jol's tenure at the club has been undermined to a ridiculous state. Every day it was a more untenable position, and it seems that it is indeed Juande Ramos who is in pol position to take over the club. Fans at the final whistle were left bemused, upset and shocked - shaking their heads at what this had come down to. A glorious club feeling heartache tonight, but soon, several very important issues must be addressed.

Who will be our new manager?

Who will be our caretaker manager until the new man has arrived?

Can our performances get worse during this interim period of uncertainty?

A real problem is the Sporting Director role of Damian Commolli - will this continue?

Daniel Levy has sickened me in his actions, but unfortunately he won't sack himself.

Martin Jol has been undermined to oblivion, yet he still leaves with some dignity. They were defeated 3 - 1. But it was the manner of the defeat that will leave fans seething. Gutless, passionless, effortless, clueless.

There wasn't a single Spurs player that can hold their head up high after that defeat.

The view of the touchline summed it all up. One manager was screaming at his players. He wanted passion, effort, closing down and no nonsense defending. The other manager looked puzzled, out of ideas and occasionally slumped in his chair.

Here are the goals....

You thought the result was bad...?

Gareth Bale injured

Jenas had a stinker

Dawson at fault for two goals

No 'keeper errors, we still conceded three

Berbatov wasn't happy about being on the bench

NEWS FLASH : We have wasted rather a lot of money on Bent

Spurs have decent players, but play nowhere near decent

Jol's tactics, pre-match talk and post-match excuses are anything but assuring

Park Lane Spurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889941580516235542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487398572515399259.post-15661563098549835592007-10-19T10:50:00.000+01:002007-10-19T11:00:19.520+01:00Getafe : Sounds FamiliarSpurs entertain Getafe in the first game of the UEFA Cup group stage at White Hart Lane on Thursday 25th October.

However, Getafe are in a bad situation in La Liga. Sitting 19th before the weekend, they have yet to win a game. And recently, the Chairman of the club has stated that he would support resting players in Europe to help improve the clubs league position.

We wait to see what happens, but the chances are they won't be fielded a much weakened side, despite some injuries in defence. However, the Getafe side have yet to gel after some new signings, and are not firing on all cylinders. They are struggling for form and points at the wrong end of the table.

Sound familiar?

Spurs should still have the firepower, and home advantage, to overhaul the Spanish side next week. A few things of interest have popped up....

Pascal Chimbonda is on the edge of securing a new deal

Paul Kemsley has left his position at the club

Paul Robinson, undergoing continual criticism for his performances for club and country, is injured and will miss the next league game at Newcastle.

Some fans aren't exactly jumping with joy about the news of Chimbonda's impending new contract. His attacking style is fun to watch, but is occasionally left wanting at defending crosses at the back. If only he could jump as high and as vigorously as he does when attacking the ball in the opposition box when defending, there wouldn't be much of a problem. The Torres equaliser at Anfield is the latest one that comes to mind. However, I think Chimbonda is one of the top right-backs in the country, and I just hope that Jol and the coaching stuff can urge him to stay solid at the back.

Paul Kemsley was Tottenham Hotspur's vice-Chairman. Until Wednesday. That was when he quit. Said Daniel Levy :-

"It is with regret that I announce the resignation of Paul Kemsley.
"Paul has recently expanded his property business interests in the United States and feels that inevitably his time spent overseas will impact upon his ability to fulfil his role with the club.

"Paul has worked with me for the past six years at the club and I thank him for his advice and counsel during this period."

Said Paul Kemsley :-

"To be honest, I had outgrown the position. I am not a number two any more, and it was becoming a distraction.

"My number one appetite is for Rock (his property company), and I am spending a lot of time in America.

"With all the time I was spending at Spurs as well, I was running out of time with my kids."

Kemsley was said to be the man behind the Ramosgate affair, and flew to Spain to meet Juande Ramos himself. However, it's not this PR disaster that forced him out. Apparently.

Paul Robinson had (yet) another night to forget in Moscow. In the biting cold he was beaten by a penalty to square the game at 1 - 1 and palmed another shot to a rather delighted Russian forward, who duly tapped the ball home. It is agonising watching game after game after game, sitting, knowing, that Mr Robinson WILL eventually mess up AT LEAST ONCE in the game. It happened again. He could possibly have caught the ball, but he didn't try and catch. He palmed it. If you're going to palm the ball, you make sure it goes away from goal. Far away preferably. But he just let it hit his hands and softly placed the ball in a 'who wants it?' manner to the side of him. True, he should have had more help from Campbell and Lescott, so the blame is not all on the 'keeper, but he's far from blameless. Anyway, anguish aside, because Paul Robinson's injured. Now, I know it's not nice to say that, and I don't wish injury on any player, except Robert Pires, but it's the only way.

It's the only way Spurs and England defences can be rebuilt around solidity, without the wracking fear of calamity behind them.

It's the only way Paul Robinson will be replaced by Radek Cerny (Ben Alnwick is out on loan) in goal.

It's the only way Paul Robinson can possibly rebuild his own confidence. He is clearly a brilliant 'keeper, but at the moment, he is playing awfully, at best.

A calf strain forces Robbo to be out of the Newcastle game on Monday night. Lord knows how Radek Cerny must feel. Finally, a chance for the Czech man to play in a league game. A big one, in front of a big crowd. He's performed brilliant when he has played competitively, and brilliant in friendlies too. As long as his nerves don't get the better of him (he has all weekend to worry about his big chance), he'll perform well. A strong commander of the box, good reflexes and a safe pair of hands. Hopefully, if he does perform really well, Martin Jol will have the balls to let him stay between the sticks.Park Lane Spurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889941580516235542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487398572515399259.post-39305221197758878412007-10-10T11:01:00.001+01:002007-10-10T11:10:37.747+01:00UEFA Cup Group DrawThe group stages have been drawn for the UEFA Cup. It'll be important to start off with 3 points against Getafe, who are a reasonable side. But with the game at the Lane to start off with, we should be able to overpower the Spanish side, and hopefully use it as a platform to complete the rest of the fixtures without too much aggravation.

It's Bolton Wanderers that had the unfortunate luck to be drawn in a group with Bayern Munich, so our luck isn't that bad.Park Lane Spurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889941580516235542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487398572515399259.post-14548164199391825272007-10-07T23:14:00.000+01:002007-10-07T23:34:12.268+01:00Liverpool 2 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur, Match Highlights
Spurs drew another game, this time with Liverpool at Anfield. However, it was only Fernando Torres' stoppage time equaliser that stopped Tottenham claiming all the points.

Spurs are specialising in stoppage time goals this season.

THE GOALS
And yes, there was also a another bad moment for Mr Paul Robinson, before you ask. His spillage left Mr Andrei Voronin with a tap in. Mr Robbie Keane finished off Mr Dimitar Berbatov's header before half time, and did it again in the second half. Also considering that Liverpool had plenty of chances to score, but due to luck, misfiring, and some decent defending from our centre halves, we kept them at bay.

Shame we couldn't hold on for the win. I don't know what happens to our players in the last few minutes of a game.

Anyway, the goals can be seen by clicking on the links above.

Next up is an international break, followed by an away game against Newcastle. A dry pitch, very warm conditions and the lack of any chance of Spurs losing the tie meant it was a pretty poor game. However, some positives came out of it. The ground wash awash with flags, and legendary former players. A party atmosphere, you could say.

What followed was stunning. The game ended up 4 - 4. A point for either team, and a real need to get some rest and try and comprehend what happened in the game.

Spurs scorers : Berbatov, Chimbonda, Keane & Kaboul. Villa scorers : Laursen (2), Agbonlahor & Gardner.

To read the match report, go here.

Several issues were brought up on this day :-

Why was our 125th anniversary celebrated on the day of a league game?

Why was Spurs LEGEND Graham Roberts not invited for the celebrations?

Should Paul Robinson continually be allowed to keep goal for Spurs?

We can't defend and, consequently, keep clean sheets. Whose fault is this? Jol's or the players?

Eight games gone, seven points, eighteenth position in the league. Where will we finish?

How long does Jol have left?

The game itself saw Spurs concede 4 goals, at least 3 of which could have been avoided. Mr Paul Robinson had one of those nights. Spurs are a team with good defenders and a good goalkeeper, yet we can't defend. Individually talented, collectively brittle.

1 - 3 down at half time, and another to add to our woes in the second. But Spurs threw everything but the kitchen sink at Villa and managed to get a draw after Kaboul spanked one in in stoppage time. The fans went crazy, but a draw was surely not what we were after on this night.

Our defending was particularly woeful for Villa's second goal. Despite having time to mark opposition players, we let a free kick to be casually passed to a free Villa player on the left wing who duly crossed in for a pin-ball goal, which should have been disallowed for offside. The ball ended up going through Robinson's legs. Surely something needs to be done in training about the shocking state of our defense?

Anyway, to the issues that concern me. The decision to celebrate the 125th anniversary on a match day confused and worried me. The fact that it meant we could very well lose a game would make it look silly. Especially as we were celebrating '125 glorious years', in the relegation zone. The limited edition shirts, numerous memorabilia and hype over past glories leads me to only one thought. This celebration was more about Daniel Levy and the board taking revenue from the Spurs megastore than about celebration of a great club. There were flags given to every fan, and past Spurs legends were at the ground, but the fact that it was on a match day meant that it was a seized opportunity to get as much money as possible out of this day. All around the ground during the game, I saw fans with bags full of gifts and memorabilia and Daniel Levy in the crowd hoping for a Spurs win so that more fans would go into the shops and purchase some more items from the vast array we have available due to our, excuse the pun, rich history.

Graham Roberts was the Captain of Tottenham Hotspur when we won the UEFA Cup in 1984. He was not invited to the celebrations at White Hart Lane because he has recently been speaking out in favour of Martin Jol, and the way he has been treated by the board in recent weeks. That is an absolute disgrace.

Graham Roberts is a Tottenham Legend. He was a monster on the pitch and a superb captain. The board have made a major blunder, and I cannot fathom how Roberts must feel.
Graham Roberts : "I'd run through a brick wall for Tottenham."

There was no Roberts at the game, and no Roberts on the pitch. We let in four amateur goals. And Paul Robinson must be watching the tape right now and hopefully squirming. Sorry Paul but you were at fault for at least the first two goals we conceded. The third could have been saved if he hadn't done that little jump to the side as the player shoots. He likes doing that and it costs goals. For the fourth goal, he did exactly the same thing. As an international goalkeeper, he is playing like an amateur. Our goalkeeping coach needs to have stern words with him. Frankly, I think it's time for Radek Cerny to step in. And not just for silly UEFA Cup games against minnows who we have no chance of losing to, but in some meaningful games. It's time Robbo sat on the bench for a while so he knows that what he's producing isn't good enough. I just hope Jol has the balls to drop him. I was shocked to see Jenas wasn't playing against Villa, and thought Jol had dropped him, but then I found out he was injured. Martin Jol has a soft spot for players like Robbo, Jenas and Berbatov, and he won't drop them no matter how they perform, which is extremely worrying.

Had we lost the game, I'm not sure Jol would have been in employment this morning, despite what Daniel Levy says about backing him 100%. At what point do we say it's still early in the season to be looking at our position, and points accumulation? It's 8 games into the league, which is nearly a quarter of the season. Unless Spurs pick up immediately we could be in for a mediocre season. I don't think we'll be in a relegation fight, but we'll be struggling for Europe at this rate. Forget Champions League. Completely out of the question.

Jol may well have this season to prove himself. But results will have to improve. Against Villa we pretty much dominated the whole game. Villa had few attacks but managed to score 4 goals. This is where we need to drastically improve. It seems to me we're dying to get Ledley King back, because he just wouldn't stand for this. It must be excruciating watching all those goals fly in whilst sat on the bench. Back to Jol, and he did make good substitutions during the game. Defoe on for Tainio, who was lacklustre. Bent on for Berbatov, and Malbraque on for Lennon. I thought those substitutions were absolutely spot on. The timing and players subbed was brilliant, and in the end it brought about a draw. Some fans were leaving at 4 - 1, and it's not great to see, but you can't blame them. It was a game that gave me several minor heart attacks, bouts of crying, nearly wetting myself, joy and a sense of numbness. What a team to support.

Finally, I'd like to thank Younes Kaboul for sparing our blushes, Pascal Chimbonda for playing well so far this season, and constantly getting in the box which resulted in a goal, and Gareth Bale for being Gareth Bale. Unmentioned so far, but this kid was dynamite. He has pace, and can actually cross the ball. He took some great corners, and was a constant threat down the left side. Villa knew what he was going to do, but just couldn't stop him. This guy is keeping us fresh at the moment, and we'd be a mess without him. A man of the match performance for an 18 year old left back, who is currently our joint top goalscorer with Younes Kaboul. Spurs have a lot to do, and although we need to sort out our defense, we can certainly attack. Hopefully we'll sort ourselves out pretty soon, otherwise we'll start to hear things like this:-

"We're too good to go down."

all images from sportbox.tv

Park Lane Spurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889941580516235542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487398572515399259.post-5222495140389922792007-09-26T21:40:00.000+01:002007-09-27T12:44:35.819+01:00Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 Middlsbrough, Match HighlightsSpurs won their Carling Cup home fixture against Middlesbrough, producing a fine performance.

Spurs XI : Paul Robinson, Pascal Chimbonda, Gareth Bale, Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul, Teemu Tainio, Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon, Jermain Defoe, Dimitar Berbatov.

Here are the match highlights!

Jermain Defoe got his chance to start, as did Gareth Bale, who scored Tottenham's first in the second half, closely followed by another from Tom Huddlestone.

The first half was pretty much one-way traffic, with Tottenham creating several chances which should have been converted but for the inspired performance of Jones in the Boro goal.

After many fans have questioned Jol's tactics and substitutions, it was his subs against Boro that eventually got us a couple of goals. Spurs continue their frustrating league form by getting a draw in the Reebok Stadium.

After Bolton were lucky enough to get a draw in their UEFA Cup away leg, and with league form worse than ours, we were looking to step it up against Little Sam's lot. Unfortunately, we didn't do it. As usual we created enough chances, but less-than-great finishing let us down. Again.

Now, I am not entirely sure what was going on with the team selection for this game. And this is what concerns me far more than the result :-

Spurs XI : Paul Robinson, Pascal Chimbonda, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Ricardo Rocha, Michael Dawson, Teemu Tainio, Didier Zokora, Jermaine Jenas, Steed Malbranque, Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane.

Substitutes : Radek Cerny, Young-Pyo Lee, Aaron Lennon, Tom Huddlestone, Darren Bent.

Notice anything? Where the hell is Bale, Kaboul and Defoe? Teemu Tainio even managed to get into the starting lineup somehow.

I've done a little research, not much, but I don't know what was going on with Bale. Is he ill? Did he pick up a knock against Famagusta? Where is he? One of our brightest players so far this season, if not THE brightest, and he's not in the squad. If Jol simply did not select him for the game, well, I don't know what to say. The same goes for Kaboul. After Jermain Defoe hit a couple of absolute beauties in the UEFA Cup, he couldn't make it to the bench. It's clear to me Jol doesn't know his best starting lineup.

All these different competitions and switching between home and away games is throwing Jol off. It's a tough old game, is this management lark.

Keeping the same team for a few games would really help us out. Instead, we have Rocha in for Kaboul, Zokora in for Huddlestone and Tainio in for Bale. I can understand that Jol must have been worried about giving away space to Bolton, and consequently losing the game, but he must have realised that attacking Bolton ruthlessly would have been a safe bet, considering their state and our incredible riches in the attacking department.

Should we be pleased with a point considering our recent league form?

If Jol's changing of the team isn't working, why is he pursuing this strategy?

Do we have too big a squad for our own good?

Should we worry that Berbatov isn't firing yet, or will he come good?

A final note on Jermain Defoe.

We are looking a little stagnant at the moment. We have players with great ability, no doubt. But the team as a whole isn't firing. Whilst we wait for our team to gel naturally, we need the players that are on form playing regularly. On this base, we can lift the team as a whole. Gareth Bale came into the team, ignored all the speculation, naturally backed the manager and got on with his game. He has given a great performance every time he stepped onto the pitch. Along with Chimbonda, and recently, Defoe. What we know is that Jermain can score goals out of nothing, with clinical finishing and, when on form, total unpredictability. We could use this up front, and whilst he is on form, Jol should look to him to spearhead our attack. I don't think he will let anyone down. Also, it is clear that he is a favourite among his teammates and the fans. As long as the crowd give him the same support that was shown against Famagusta, we can will him to score a few more screamers. Then we can see him congratulated by his teammates, and lifted on their shoulders again.

Jermain Defoe, He's a Yiddo

PARK LANE SPURS: Tactics Central :- Coming Soon!

Full Match Highlights :- Coming Soon!

Park Lane Spurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889941580516235542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487398572515399259.post-6683614952902828402007-09-22T09:28:00.000+01:002007-09-22T09:30:48.701+01:00Tottenham Hotspur 6 - 1 Anorthosis Famagusta, Match HighlightsHere are all the goals from the Famagusta game. We really needed that.

Spurs casually cruised to a 6 - 1 win over Cypriot team Anorthosis Famagusta. It was a nice change from sitting uncomfortably with a grimace on my face. Goals galore, including goals from strikers! Hurrah!

Match report can be found here.

Goals came from Kaboul, Dawson, Keane and Bent came in the first half. Followed by a sensational double from Jermain Defoe. We will try and get highlights of the game and all the goals on here soon.

In the mean time, enjoy a nice moment when a young ball boy earned his Spurs....

Yiddo! You begin to notice that the Jol supporters are even turning away in anguish. Losing to Ars*nal is hard enough, but let's face it, our start to the season hasn't been great. OK, we've played some good football and we should have beaten Fulham and possibly got a result in Manchester, but the simple fact is this : We have not been good enough. And as much as I dislike Ars*nal, they are better than us. Without competent defending, we were always going to be punished.

We fielded a decent XI, but we saw a familiar pattern. We took the lead, and then lost our heads.

Jol's substitutions, again, were pretty questionable. The team worked hard, but I was pretty shocked to see Bale come off for Lennon to deputise the left hand side. People like Malbranque and Huddlestone, who just isn't quick enough, were knackered. And Lennon didn't seem completely fit. And you can't blame him, it was his first appearance of the season. But we should perhaps look to Jol. Questions arise :-

Why does Jol make such questionable substitutions? Lennon for Bale, and also, Defoe for Keane against Fulham? Also stretches back to last season...

Is Jol the man for the job in the long term?

Will he be sacked before the end of the season? Or will he walk away at the end of the season?

Darren Bent missed a sitter. Did we really need to spend all that money on him when our forwards scored over 60 goals last season?

Does Dimitar Berbatov think he is untouchable or bigger than the club?

Should Taarabt and/or Boateng be given a chance?

Some painful ones there. I think it is plain to see that Jol's subs are not exactly world class. We can only hope that this is a blip. It's so easy to get driven into such a negative frame of mind considering our current predicament, but it's a bad run, and we will improve. It's not like we've been playing badly, but we certainly need to stop conceding goals. Jol has known this from last season - we barely kept a clean sheet. And while he brought in a defender, we still can't defend. It's not like we have bad players, so the cause of the leaks are on the training ground. This is where we should drill our players in closing down, positioning, work ethic and fitness. It's clear that this is lacking.

We captured Darren Bent for a club record fee. At the moment he isn't starting, and once he came on against the Arse he missed a sitter, going for the ball with his wrong foot. Would Defoe have missed that? We'll never know, he wasn't even on the bench. Lord knows how he feels right now, except we know he doesn't feel like signing a contract. But should the money spent on Bent have gone elsewhere. The gaping, glaring hole in our squad is in central midfield. We signed Boateng, but we haven't played him yet. What we require is a workhorse, tackling midfielder who will inspire others around him to make some tackles and show some bravado around the pitch. We don't have that. And until then, or until Jol or anyone within 20 yards of the players, focuses on this in training, we will concede silly goals that will lose us matches. And it doesn't help if your 'keeper likes to second-guess and flap at crosses.

Berba missed a couple of real chances that could have put us in the clear. He would not have missed them last season, and I watch his body language anxiously every game. Even in pre-season he looked slightly uninterested, knowing that his spot up front was untouchable. He gets angry in games with his teammates, and while that is a sign of determination, perhaps he feels bigger than the club. He may have deserved his increased wages for Spurs, but I feel it has only fueled his ego. He knows, at any point, he could ask for a transfer, and there would be a whole host of top European clubs ready and willing to offer big bucks. Perhaps he feels that he can do no wrong. It is worrying, and as our poll currently suggests, if we do not get into the Champions League, Berba is gone.

As for Jol, he'll have to sort this mess out. It won't happen by itself. It's going to take hard work and some discipline, but we will improve our form. What is certain around the club, is that fans are beginning to think that the big Dutchman is not the man for our club, and that he should be replaced. I am of the opinion that he should not be sacked... yet. We KNOW that he can lead us into Europe, the UEFA Cup at least. Two years in a row is not a fluke. Maybe he isn't the man for us in the long term but sacking him now would not do us any favours at all. We'll end up with some guy who will put us back into mid-table, and we'll look back at the glorious times of Jol when we could actually play attacking football. It's too early to think about letting him go. Fans are just wearing their Arse tinted glasses, and although it hurts like hell to lose to the scum, let's give the Big Man a chance.

Spurs v Famagusta Thursday 20th September UEFA Cup

Bolton v Spurs Sunday 23rd September Premier League

Spurs v Middlesbrough Wednesday 26th September Carling Cup

Spurs v Aston Villa Monday 1st October Premier League

Famagusta v Spurs Thursday 4th October UEFA Cup

Park Lane Spurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889941580516235542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487398572515399259.post-27579776460886518922007-09-15T21:17:00.000+01:002007-09-16T22:21:57.562+01:00Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 3 ArsenalWe threw our lead away, again. Between now and then there isn't much going on. The country is preoccupied with the England games against Israel and Russia.

Alongside the closed transfer window, it's probably going to be a quiet one until the day after the second England qualifier.

Spurs fans everywhere immediately check the fixture list for the match against the scum, le Arse. I was no different, and although I await every Spurs match with extreme anticipation, in the back of my mind I am counting down the games until we face the goons. Well, it's next. There's no more Premier League games from now until then, no more chances to get 'match fit', except for those playing for their countries, and nothing else to distract you from the fact that Spurs will be playing Ars*nal at home pretty damn soon.

So, if you have any pre-game rituals, do it now. Kiss your scarf, iron your lucky boxers because it is time to give the Arse a good kicking (in a football sense, physical kicking is up to you).

PARK LANE SPURS believes that we can win this game. But I don't want to dwell on tactics or player selection too much. Whoever plays, whoever is selected, it is far more about heart and passion than the formation. In the cauldron of White Hot Lane, we will push our lads to victory - we will sing all night, and put that cemetery they call a stadium to shame.

As it is a little quiet, PARK LANE SPURS, over the course of the next week, will publish a little something for you Spurs fans to enjoy each day. Here's the first one...

I like this idea. That is what Spurs did. A number of questions arise:-

Was it Jol's fault? Poor tactics? Poor substitutions?

Paul Robinson - time for a break?

Is our midfield too lightweight? (that's a rhetorical question)

What is going on with the Jermain Defoe situation?

At 3-1 up, creating several chances and not giving away too much at the back, I can understand Jol's decision to take of Keane and put on Defoe. Whether it did or did not cause the eventual collapse is irrelevant. The fact is, that it shouldn't have. Credit to Tom Huddlestone for putting in a decent display, getting in a fair amount of challenges, but we are still too lightweight in midfield. We let opposing teams have half chances that really shouldn't be given away. And then our mistake-ridden defence happily converts it into a goal. This isn't new, we've had this problem most of last season, and into this one. Granted, injuries have been crippling, but basic defensive abilities need to be shown.

Paul Robinson. There is something about your 'keeping recently that is just not right. From the home defeat against Everton, Robbo's positioning and footwork have given me the heebie jeebies. And given opposition strikers a few goals. Great reflexes, but I think he, Spurs and England could benefit from a little sit on the subs bench. We have an able deputy in Radek Cerny, and he will certainly stand in while Robbo sorts himself out. It's not like our 'keeping coach is poor, its Ray Clamence for god's sake.

Jenas and Huddlestone looked good against Derby; against some half-decent opposition it's not gonna work. Please Jol, please - DROP JENAS. Twice he was through against Fulham and failed to shoot. It's not like he can't score, he just wanted to be fancy. Jenas: You shouldn't be confident enough to be doing that! What the hell have you done this season? Zokora will do the tackling, T-hudd does the passing. There's no room for you, Jermaine, until you sort yourself out. The reason we threw our lead away against Fulham is our namby-pamby midfield stance. We need to grow up, concentrate and stop pretending that if leave it, it will work out because we are a 'top 4' side.

Jermain has been promised some pitch time by Jol. Which means that even if JD isn't necessarily required on the pitch, Big Mart might feel he has to give him some minutes to keep him sweet. But he isn't ahead of any of our other 3 strikers, so how many important games is he going to start? If he leaves on a Bosman at the end of the season, I'll be sick.

Anyway, the bottom line is that we haven't sorted out any of frailties in conceding goals from last season. Yeah we've added a couple of defenders, but that familiar ability of gifting goals or making costly mistakes has not left us. Serious work needs to be done in training. Arsenal next, and we can't afford to give much away to the Arse. I'd like to think we'll have a full squad to pick from, and I certainly fancy us to beat them at home.

Let's look at the positives from the Fulham game:-

Injuries are subsiding, so I won't have to keep doing Injury Update's every week.

We created a lot of clear-cut chances. A lot.

Berbatov opened his account for this season.

Bale IS the shizzle

Park Lane Spurshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07889941580516235542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-487398572515399259.post-63979165018748374462007-09-01T16:56:00.000+01:002007-09-01T20:08:12.181+01:00Fulham 3 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur, Match HighlightsOUCH.

We outplayed Fulham, and should have won by a cricket score.
