Why rescuers make "things difficult" for people who request for adoption

...because when we pick up that cat or that kitten from "danger", his or her life is now entirely in our hands.

People who have not rescued a cat before may not aware of the huge emotional cost, especially when the cat is severely injured or ill. There is also the huge financial cost of vet fees, transport and boarding.

"Seasoned" rescuers have gone through bad experiences from adoption that was not properly screened, resulting in much suffering for the cats. Breaking of promise to mesh up the windows has resulted in tragic end for the cats. Breaking of promise to sterilise the cat resulted in birth of unwanted litter. Breaking of promise to keep the cat indoors resulted in the cat being lost. Rescuers have to spend time and money to travel to the adopter's estate to search for the lost cat. Some lost cats were never found, resulting in anguish from guilt and anxiety. We found one cat a year later!

Cats adopted months or even a year later, have been blamed for children developing asthma and allergic rhinitis (or "sinus" as is known among Singaporeans) and hence returned. Not too long ago, a family who already has a cat for a long time, adopted a kitten. They returned her many months later, claiming that a child developed "sinus" to this adopted cat! The returned kitten is now an adult. It was heartbreaking to see her crying for her home. As an adult cat now, her chance of finding a home is now reduced.

Hence rescuers appreciate answers to questions like these to pick out "genuine" adopters so as to reduce the return rate.

d. Are there any kids at home? If yes, are the kids allergic to furs/cats/etc?
e. Which floor are you living at?
f. Are your windows grilled with small grilles (2inch) that the cats won't be able to get out?
g. If not, are you willing to mesh out ALL your windows for the cats' safety?
h. Are you above 21 years of age? If you are younger, you will need the consent of your parents for adoption to be approved.
i. Are the other people living under the same roof, agreeable to living with a cat?

Perhaps with this understanding of the background of a rescued cat, adopters will not think that rescuers are out to make "things difficult" with conditions and questionnaire. If anything, genuine adopters will appreciate the strong commitment of the rescuers in the welfare of the cats by being so fastidious in their screening. Rescuers are not like people who sell pets for monetary gain. They are not out to patronise the customers. Their concern is only if the cat or kitten will go to a "good home".

To the few people who were offended by our request for the questionnaire to be answered and conditions on adoption of a yet-to-be-sterilised kitten, and who replied that it was far easier to adopt a kitten direct from the streets or from the SPCA, we offer our apology. However we do not confine our joy of a "good home" to only "our" cats. Any cat or kitten that finds a home, whether from the streets, SPCA, other cat shelters or other rescuers, is a matter for us to share in that joy.

Is there an adoption fee? How much is it?

Talking about “adoption fees” can be uncomfortable for some rescuers as they do not want to give the impression that they are selling the cats or kittens.

Rescuers are ordinary people with the usual “bread and butter” concern.

The money spent of a single rescued cat, from trapping to vet attention to boarding, can amount to thousands by the time the cat is fit enough to be put up for adoption. Of course the “emotional cost” in the care of a cat cannot be quantified.

The amount in a goodwill financial gesture is dependent on the adopter’s financial standing. Helping to relieve the financial burden of a rescuer allows him or her to continue rescuing other cats or kittens.

A potential adopter, who is miserly, is of concern to the rescuer with regard to the long-term ability to care for cat that will, just like us human, fall sick. For example, an adopter, who is a professional and lives in a owned private property, but grumbles about the cost of cat food and litter, even during the initial discussion about adoption, is a “bad” one. A “seasoned” rescuer will not release the cat or kitten to such a miserly adopter.

What is the rescuer's ideal adopter?

The cats listed here for adoption are all rescued off the streets because they were once home-cats but abandoned for reasons we will never get to know.

Rescuers are paying for the boarding and veterinary expenses of these cats but they will not compromise in the quest for homes. Hence potential adopters are carefully screened with questionnaire and sometimes even home visits, with the hope that every cat will find a good home that will take care of him or her in health as well as in sickness, never to be abandoned again.

Rescuers hope for the "ideal" adopters who look upon cats as sentient beings, sharing feelings of joy of being loved and fear of being hungry and abandoned. These adopters look beyond the external appearance of the cats, the tipped ears and the seniority.

Some potential adopters reject these cats because of the "ugliness" of the tipped ears. The reason for tipping the ears of these cats already in a shelter is because the tipped ears may just save their lives if they do somehow run away and are caught by pest controllers. Such tipped-ear cats surrendered to the AVA may get a reprieve in the holding area rather than be killed right away.

What is the rescuer's ideal adopter? One who asks for the "most unadoptable cat"! This is like striking lottery to the rescuer!

Will A Cat Fit Into Your Home and Life ?

* You & all members in your household should agree that a cat is a welcome addition. Be prepared to have the cat in your lives, which could be 10 – 15 years.
* Do you have the patience and committment to understand your cat's needs and ways of communication?
* How old are your children? If they're below 6, it is best you wait a few years. Kittens have teeth and claws and may strike back when teased.
* Is anyone in the house allergic? Different breeds elicit different reactions. Spend time with a similar pet at a friend's house before choosing yours.
* Is an adult willing to shoulder ultimate responsibility for the animal's care? Pets can teach a child about loyalty and responsibility, but you can't expect a child to do all the work of feeding and changing the kitty litter.
* How much time does your family spend at home? Animals like regular schedules. Do you know who'll take care of your pet when you go on a trip?
* Can you tolerate some damage to furniture and floors until your new pet becomes accustomed to your home? Can you take some accidents in stride?
* Do you have the financial means to support a pet? There are regular cost for food and litter and occasional costs of medical care, grooming, toys, and other supplies.
* A Cat Is for life – it is a lifetime commitment.

The cost of keeping a cat

Initial costs:

· Vaccinations are a good chance to meet your vet & introduce him to your new cat. A vaccination will cost in the range of $35-50. Kittens require 2-3 vaccinations in their first year.

· Sterilisation is at 6 mths and price vary in the range of $120 – 200.

· Cat carrier - These range from $30 - $50 and are necessary as you will need one to take your cat to the vet.

· Food & water bowls - These can be as cheap or expensive as you want. A rough guide would be $20

· Litter trays - These can be as plain or fancy as you like. The average litter tray would be in the range of $20

· Scratching post - Scratching posts come in all shapes & sizes ranging from $10 to $200

· Cat bed - This isn't a must but certainly something your cat would appreciate. You can buy reasonably priced cat beds for around $30.

· Cat enclosure - Most people are aware how dangerous it is to let your cat roam as it pleases. Not only is it unfair on your neighbours but the dangers your cat faces with cars, dogs & cruel humans. The safe alternative is to screen your windows and it could cost $100 – 200.

Ongoing monthly costs:

· Food - This depends on what food you will be providing. A rough estimate would be $30 per month per cat.

· Very young kittens may need KMR (Kitten milk replacement) and it may be $20+ for a tin till the kittens are weaned/able to take semi-solids.

· Cat litter would be $20-30 per month.

Occasional costs :

· You may need to take the cat to the vet occasionally – be prepared for a bill of $30-50 for a standard consult.

· Toys and treats may range from $10 – 100.

· Grooming if you cat has long hair – it ranges from $50 – 100.

· You may need to arrange for boarding or cat-sitting when your family is away for a holiday.

Cat Owners Have Lower Heart Attack Risk, Study

Owning a cat could reduce your risk of a heart attack by nearly one third, researchers told delegates of the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in New Orleans last week. The finding provoked a mixed reaction from heart experts and veterinarians.

The finding was the main result of a 10 year study of more than 4,000 Americans by researchers at the University of Minnesota’s Stroke Institute in Minneapolis. Executive director of the Institute, Dr Adnan Qureshi, who is also senior author of the study, was reported by US News & World Report to have said:

“For years we have known that psychological stress and anxiety are related to cardiovascular events, particularly heart attacks.”

Qureshi said having pets probably helped to relieve stress. The researchers said dogs probably had a similar effect, but there weren’t enough dog owners in the study to show this conclusively. Previous research has linked contact with pets to heart benefits, they said.

Qureshi and colleagues extracted data on 4,435 Americans aged 30 to 75, from the second National Health and Nutrition Examination Study that took place from 1976 to 1980. 2,435 of the participants were current or former cat owners, while the remaining 2,000 had never had a cat.

Using the main outcome as death from all causes, including stroke and heart events, the researchers found that over a 10 year follow up period, cat owners showed a 30 per cent lower risk of death from heart attack compared to non cat owners.

Qureshi, who own a cat called Ninja, said they had expected to see an effect, because the theory was plausible, but the size of the link was a surprise.

Someone who was not surprised by the findings was Kathie Cole who presented the results of a study to the American Heart Association in 2005 that showed contact with dogs helped improve heart and lung function in people with heart failure. Cole is a clinical nurse at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Center and School of Nursing. She told US News & World Report:

“I would be inclined to think that any animal that is perceived as meaningful to a person in a positive way would have health benefits.”

She mentioned other research that suggested pets had a calming effect. Unfortunately, the opportunity to have this “low cost” stress relief is denied to many potential heart patients who live in apartment blocks and nursing homes where pets are not allowed.

Qureshi said this research:

“Opens a whole new avenue or intervention that we hadn’t looked at before, one that can be made at the public level.” And there appear to be no risks with this approach, unlike drugs or surgery, he added.

Others would disagree, saying that such findings are not proof of a causal link, only that a link between cat ownership and lower heart attack risk exists. Qureshi admits this, said a report in ABC News. The link could be to the personality and lifestyle of cat owners and not to the fact they have a cat.

“Maybe cat owners tend not to have high-stress personalities, or they are just the type of people that are not highly affected by anxiety or high-stress situations,” he said.

Qureshi and colleagues did not analyse the personality traits of cat owners and could therefore not shed light in this area.

Another reason to be sceptical, other experts told ABC News, is that other studies have shown quite different results. One for example, published in the American Journal of Cardiology in 1995, showed that while dog owners had a higher chance of surviving a heart attack, cat owners had a reduced chance. Director of the division of cardiology at the University of Miami, Dr Robert Myerburg, said this made sense because many people are allergic to cats, and not to dogs. He said he was surprised by this latest study.

Veterinary experts however, put across another plausible argument for why cats might bring more stress relief than dogs. Technical vice-president and veterinary pathologist at ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City, Utah, Lawrence McGill, said it was probably because cats are lap animals that want to be petted, and it is the petting that brings down the stress levels, and heart rate and blood pressure too, in many cases.

On the other hand, said McGill, dogs need hands on attention, which could actually raise the owner’s stress. When you get home from work the dog demands attention, you have to take it for a walk, dogs need to be fed according to a routine, whereas cats can practically take care of themselves.

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates there are about 72 million pet dogs and 82 million pet cats in the US.

Rescued on the 27-02-2008 from a restructured hospital that has zero-cat tolerance and where he was also in danger from snakes, Alex-Blue was sterilised at PAW clinic on the same day. He was also vaccinated and later transferred to MettaCats for boarding until he finds a good home.

She’s doing good, healthy and happy. She’s not growing much in size anymore but the sneezing bouts have subsided, eyes clear, coat shiny. Appetite healthy but is really picky about food, and dictates what she will or will not eat. Absolutely refuses kibble, only eats wet food.

Extremely manja and vocal (some say noisy), and really curious about everything. Easily distracted. Ready to greet anyone with a curious stare and friendly rub and loves to cuddle up at all times. Demands constant attention, supremely confident that she is ‘loved’. Winning many human friends with her wonderful personality. Standing up fine to the other cats, will not tolerate any ‘bullying’ nonsense.

Two ginger cats seeking a home. About 75% of ginger cats are male.

Buttercup is about one-year-old and his mum is about 3-4 year-old.

It will be ideal for mother and son to go to one home but they can also be adopted separately.

Both are sterilised, vaccinated, uses litter-bin with pine pellets.

Both live harmoniously in a multi-cat environment.

She and her sister, Yo-Yo, were seen scavenging on discarded leaves that were used to wrap otak-otak.
Yo-Yo was adopted on 19-01-2008.

She has been vaccinated and he uses the litter-bin.

"Adult cats are much easier to manage than kittens. They are already litter trained and love nothing more than a comfortable lap to sit on or the end of a bed to sleep."

Background : This very friendly ginger feline boy appeared "suddenly" in the vicinity of a fitness centre, before Hari Raya Puasa. Was he yet again, another victim of "spring cleaning"? He is now at risk of being complaint against by a user who has made it known clearly to the management that she would "bring matters to higher authorities" when she exhibited aelurophobia (abnormal fear of cats) towards an earlier similarly friendly cat who was fortunately rehomed before the pest controller nabbed him.
Please give him a home again, this time a "forever one" safe from "nasty human beings".

Sterilised on 1st November 2007

Groomed : 12th April 2008 (Loving Pets)

Vaccinated : 12th April 2008 (Mt Pleasant, East Coast)

Weight : 6kg (12th April 2008)
