Charlotte's Web Special Screening In Jefferson County, WA

CALLING ALL JEFFERSON COUNTY 4-H MEMBERS AND CLUBS!

Jefferson County 4-H will host a special screening of the live action film "Charlotte's Web" as a 4-H holiday get-together and fund raiser.

The show will be held at the:

Rose Theater
235 Taylor Street
Port Townsend
Saturday, December 30
10:00 am

Tickets are $6 for youth,
$3 for 4-H Jefferson County youth members
(thanks to the 4-H Council for subsidizing the costs for youth members),
and $8 for adults.

Seating is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis.

To reserve a seat, tickets must be purchased in person or by mail from the WSU Extension office before 5 p.m. Friday, December 29. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the show at the Rose Theater if seats are available. Reserved tickets purchased through the mail can be picked up at the theater at show time.

Jadyne Reichne, Jefferson County Extension receptionist, is all set to sell special screening tickets.

Wear your brightest 4-H green and be part of this national opportunity to honor 4-H youth programs through Charlotte's Web.

4-H is featured prominently in Charlotte's Web, based on the favorite children's book written by E.B. White. The movie stars Dakota Fanning as Fern and also the voice of 4-H alumnus Julia Roberts as Charlotte. 4-H alumnus Reba McEntire, as well as other noteworthy actors, including Robert Redford, Cedric the Entertainer, Oprah Winfrey and Cathy Bates portray the other barnyard animals.

Charlotte's Web features the 4-H Emblem and themes that speak directly to 4-H's focus on youth leadership development and community service. 4-H encourages young people to use their head, heart, hands and health to become strong, confident and contributing citizens.

Similarly, in Charlotte's Web, Fern uses her head, heart, hands and health to encourage family and friends to save Wilbur from the smokehouse. With help from Wilbur's barn friends, especially Charlotte, Fern's dream comes true when she is able to take Wilbur to her town's 4-H Fair.

Charlotte's Web: Rising Sun Pictures

A news story on the work done by Rising Sun Pictures (RSP), a company that provides visual efferts services to storytellers, on Charlottes the spider for Charlotte's Web.

Starting in January 2005 and finishing in July 2006, RSP delivered over 240 spellbinding shots of Charlotte and her magnificent webs.

A team of 60 artists developed the photo-realistic computer-generated character, voiced by Oscar-winner Julia Roberts.

Bring your Kleenex. Maybe it's just coz I'm female, or maybe it's coz my mother read this book to me when I was little -- but every time a new word appeared in that web -- tears rolled down my cheeks! "Charlotte's Web,'' a splendid new screen adaptation of White's 1952 children's book, gloriously brings the classic to life. If you've never read it, this is a perfect introduction, and if you have, you'll be impressed with how effectively director Gary Winick and screenwriters Susannah Grant and Karey Kirkpatrick capture White's message about love and loyalty among all of God's creatures without ever getting syrupy. There's an edge to this exemplary family movie, just as there is in the story.

The filmmakers' wisest decision was not to rely on computer-generated effects. Wilbur is a live animal, as is most of the barnyard menagerie. Seeing actual horses, cows and sheep go about their business lends credibility to the farm scenes.

The county fair where Fern brings Wilbur in the hope that a blue ribbon might be his ticket to longevity is lovingly created. When Fern catches the eye of a cute boy who buys her a roller coaster ticket, it's suddenly obvious that her affection for a pig may soon be transferred elsewhere.

Another of White's timeless messages, astutely captured in the movie, is that nothing is forever, including life, and to make the best of the moment. Listening to Wilbur squeal in delight might tempt you to do the same just for the heck of it. (Read More)

"It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both." — E.B. White

But the film, directed by Gary Winick ("13 Going on 30") has a sweetness of its own. Dakota Fanning, in pigtails and overalls, brings eager energy to Fern, the farm girl who raises Wilbur. Ten-year-old Dominic Scott Kay gives a lilt to the voice of Wilbur, and Julia Roberts' matter-of-fact quality nicely suits Charlotte. Steve Buscemi is an inspired choice for the voice of Templeton the rat (who frequently speaks in sardonic third person, as in "The rat is losing his touch!"). And Charlotte's web-spinning sequences are nicely handled; she swoops and soars as she spells out "some pig" and "terrific," like a multi-legged ballerina. (Read More)

Julia Roberts posed with Dakota Fanning and a 6-week-old Yorkshire pig tethered on a red leash at the premiere of "Charlotte's Web" on Sunday. "I was a 4-H'er, love animals and am all for veterinary science," Roberts, the voice of Charlotte, told two teenage fans waving a 4-H banner in the ArcLight lobby.

But Roberts didn't join Fanning, Dominic Scott Kay (the voice of Wilbur), Steve Buscemi, Cedric the Entertainer, Kathy Bates, Beau Bridges, Reba McEntire and others from the film at the after party. She missed seeing the Hollywood Palladium decorated as the Somerset County Fairgrounds and lost an opportunity to get up close and personal with piglets and other animals at the Zuckerman Farm Petting Zoo. Being a huge fan of the children’s classic Charlotte's Web, Dakota Fanning talks about her wonderful experience playing Fern, the little girl with a big heart who loves her pig, Wilbur.

Hollywood.com: Do you remember the first time that you read Charlotte's Web?

Dakota Fanning: I do. I've read it so many times at different times in my life, and I've had it read to me. Then while I was doing the movie I read it before and after. So it's really meant something different to me each time and has a deeper meaning each time and something that I've used in my life as I've gotten older.

HW: Were you ever worried that they might not get it right in the film?

DF: I really wasn't because Gary [Winick] the director, that was his most important thing. He always wanted to make it just like the book and he always had the book in his hand, and if there was any way he could make some illustrations in the book into a real shot in the movie he would do that, and so that never worried me. I knew that it was going to come out very, very similar to the book, but just as a movie.

HW: This is a wonderful little fable about death and dying, this movie, and as a young person do connect with that in any way?

DF: I think that it definitely helps for young kids, or anyone, to deal with losing a loved one or a friend or a pet--anything. [Charlotte's Web] kind of deals with that in a non-traumatizing way. It's done in a very peaceful way and is something that Charlotte's never afraid of. Both of my dad's parents have passed away, and I really think this sort of thing helps with the circle of life and how everyone is born and then you die and you live while you're here and trying to do that to the fullest. EB White’s Charlotte’s Web is one of the most beloved children’s books of all time. It has previously been adapted into a musical cartoon, but everything old gets remade again in Hollywood, and now there’s a live action version hitting theaters this weekend. There’s an all-star cast of animal voices, but the lead human is none other than the preternaturally mature Dakota Fanning.

To be honest, I find the people interviewing Dakota Fanning more interesting than she is. It’s not that Fanning is boring – she’s perky and sweet and well spoken even when going off what is obviously the script – it’s that the journalists never seem to know how to deal with her. This looks like a little girl, but the answers she gives are not the halting giggles most kiddie thesps give – Fanning is better at a junket roundtable than some seasoned adult actresses. But she doesn’t get annoyed when asked lame questions, but she gets very in to answering more adult questions. Next time I interview her I’d like to know what her thoughts are on the economic impacts of microlending.

Q: Would you like to have a pig for a pet?

Fanning: One day I definitely would. I worked with them fro so long – they’re so smart and so cute. How can you not love them? I think if you don’t love pigs, you’re a little bit weird.

Q: What actress is your role model?

Fanning: There are so many. I love Jodi Foster – I would love to be like her and Hilary Swank and Meryl Streep. There are so many wonderful actors and actresses, some that I have worked with and some I would love to work with in the future. (Read More)

Charlotte's Web Is Coming To The Rose Theater In Port Townsend

On Friday December 22, Charlotte's Web will begin a two week engagment at our local movie theater, The Rose, in Port Townsend. Stay tuned for more information regarding a "green" screening as well as local fund raising opportunities.

Help Is Coming From Above.

Port Townsend enjoyed a lively theater scene before the dawn of the twentieth century. The Palace Theatre, The Standard, and the Learned Opera House showcased local talent and traveling vaudeville troupes "of the highest caliber." The Rose, which opened around the corner on Water Street in 1907, continued this tradition but added a recent invention to its repertoire: moving pictures. In December 1908 the Rose moved to its current location in Taylor Street. (Read More)

LIFE: What part of Charlotte's Web resonates most with you?
ROBERTS: The idea of feeling all alone and needing someone to scoop you up and say "I’ll be your friend." Everybody's had a moment where they felt like that, and you wished somebody would come and sit with you at lunch or ask you to the dance.
FANNING: There are so many messages about being a loyal friend. Wilbur didn't know Charlotte was going to die, but he treated her so great for the time she was alive.

LIFE: Do you have a friend who came through for you in a time of need, like Charlotte did for Wilbur?
ROBERTS: My friend Paige Sampson. When we were growing up together 25 years ago, neither of us had that connected group. We sort of found each other and formed our own group of two. (Read More)
