Vern Gosdin, maker of many Nashville hits died at a Nashville hospital as Tuesday became Wednesday this week. The singer/songwriter passed away in his sleep about three weeks after suffering the latest in a series of strokes. His "Chiseled in Stone" was honored as Song of the Year by the Country Music Association in 1989. George Strait, who covered Vern's "Today My World Slipped Away," said, "He was one hell of a country singer and helped me out a lot on my very first tour."

Remote Patrol: Chuck Wicks and his lady-love, Julianne Hough, were eliminated Tuesday night in "Dancing with the Stars" cutdown. "Now I'm going to go out on tour and enjoy doing what I love, and that's country music," sez Chuck post-elimination.
Here's the couple's post "DWTS" appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live."
Besides that, the Chuckster will be co-hosting The 3rd Annual Country Weekly Fashion Show Concert with ex-Wrecker Jessica Harp and GAC's Suzanne Alexander.
Julianne, for her part, has no plans to return to "DWTS" (The next season at least) while she goes out on tour and enjoys doing what she loves and that's country music (including a number of dates with George Strait).
All that, plus, didja know that Julianne Hough is one of 2009's World's Most Beautiful People, according to the people at People who know from beautiful people (Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood are also aboard the Beauty train)?
Julianne and Chuck will appear on "Live with Regis & Kelly" Thursday morning for some "DWTS" mourning.

Meanwhile, over at "The Celebrity Apprentice" boardroom, Clint Black is staying alive, despite appearing on the hot seat in from of Trump & Co. more than a few times.

CMT's 2009 Music Awards, which'll be held in Music City on June 16, has added Keith Urban, Sugarland and Def Leppard to the performance posse for the wing-ding. Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift are already on the performers list for the show...Ten days later (in June, the 26th), CMT will unveil its latest "Crossroads" pairing: Jason Aldean and Canadian rocker/film-balladeer Bryan Adams. The dudes will tape the performance in a few weeks for the June airing.
Before that, Jason guests on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on ABC Friday night.
And CMT has a bee in its bonnet; the cabler is picking up NBC's "The Singing Bee" competition and will premiere it after the Awards show...the music ratio on the show will be 60/40 (per cent) county which, considering CMT's offerings these days, sounds about right.

Because Jay Leno was hospitalized last week, Brad Paisley's scheduled Friday appearance on "The Tonight Show" was unscheduled, but will be rescheduled soon.

Kenny Chesney will join the pantheon of artists who've graced "Austin City Limits." He'll tape the show in May for a future airing (most likely this fall).

Promoting his "Never Going Back," in stores this week, Collin Raye has been in The Big Apple scurring up appearances. On tap: An appearance Thursday night on FOX News Channel's "Hannity" and the cabler's "Huckabee" this weekend. You can also catch Collin on CBS "Saturday Early Show" Saturday morning.

Rosanne Cash, who inducted Wanda Jackson into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this week, has an ambitious effort slated for this fall.
"The List" is Rosanne's next album, pegged to an October landing, and it'll be comprised of 15 classic country ditties, all pulled from a list of 100 "essential country songs" that Johnny made for her when she was 18.
(Her dad) "said if I learned this list, I would be truly educated. We are culling about 15 songs from the list and re-interpreting them, with the respect of an archivist, the love of a daughter, and my own sensibility as a New Yorker for the last two decades."
Lefty Frizzell's "Long Black Veil" is the only essential Rosanne will tell us is coming (we'll have to wait for the rest of the pack).
Meanwhile, a companion book is being assembled parallel to the recording of the album, and it'll be at your favorite bookseller around the same time the disc arrives.

Come On (It's) Over: Jessica Simpson has been booted by her label, sort of.
The good folks at Sony say that Jess is still in their fold (for pop projects), despite being given the heave-ho from Sony Nashville's roster.
Meanwhile, it's possible Jessica could continue as a country artist, but on her own dime.

Dan Seals, a pop hitmaker in the 1970's who was one of the rulers of the country charts in the 1980's, died Wednesday night after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 61.
Last June, Dan's manger reported that Seals was receiving radiation treatments for lymphoma. He said at the time, “The prognosis is good. He has the best medical care he can get, and he's in good spirits.”
In the 1970's (England) Dan's work with John Ford Corley notched a number of hits, most notably "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight."
Before Dan was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma, he was working with older brother Jim Seals (Whose Seals & Crofts were also burning up the pop charts in the '70's) as a duo, Seals & Seals. The fruit of the labor included a number of tracks that had been recorded and will eventually be released.
As if the family tree were not already fruitful enough, Seals' cousins included country singer Johnny Duncan, songwriters Troy and Chuck Seals and Brady Seals (formerly of Little Texas, solo material and the combo Hot Apple Pie).
Dan's country output included a #1 duet with Marie Osmond, "Meet Me in Montana," the first of nine straight country chart-toppers. After a #5 peak for "They Rage On," he immediately tacked on two more summit-reachers.
Brad Paisley tied Dan's nine-straight #1 streak when "Start a Band" hit #1 and looks to top him with a tenth-straight chart-topper with his latest, "Then."
Dan passed away at his daughter's Nashville home.

ACM, etc.: The Academy of Country Music has announced a number of 2009 award winners ahead the broadcast give-out (April 5 on CBS), though they won't actually be handed out until a special ceremony September 22.

*Dolly Parton will receive the Jim Reeves International Award, which goes to an individual for outstanding contributions to the acceptance of country music throughout the world.

*The Poet’s Award, honoring songwriters for outstanding musical and/or lyrical contributions throughout their careers in the field of country music will go to Merle Haggard and Harlan Howard.

*Jerry Reed, Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, and Hank Williams Jr. will be gifted with the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award honoring individuals who are pioneers in the country music genre.

*The Tex Ritter Award is handed out to the film released and/or receiving major exposure during the preceding calendar year, featuring or utilizing country music...and your winner is...Toby Keith's "Beer for My Horses."

*The Mae Boren Axton Award, given in recognition of years of dedication and service by an outstanding individual to the Academy of Country Music will go to David Young.

A number of musician and industry awards were also announced.

BusinessTN magazine has placed Dolly Parton at #10 on its 2009 Power 100 list, the only country artist on the hot 100 (three record label heads, led by Curb's Mike Curb at #14- made the list).

"I have been extremely impressed with (Taylor Swift), especially with her songwriting. I think she does magnificent work. She seems such a likeable little person, but I don't know her. But I love watching her. My husband gets a kick out of her. He just loves watching her. He thinks she's great. But I'm real impressed with the depth of her sometimes. I'll tell you someone else that's great like that -- little Miley Cyrus. Miley is such a great songwriter -- a lot of surprises about her that people don't know yet. The kids over at US Weekly say that LeAnn Rimes hooked up, in an extra-marital way, with her co-star in the Lifetime movie (premiering this Saturday), "Northern Lights," Eddie Cibrian.
Rimes, who has been married for a few moons to Dean Sheremet, got closerthanthis with Cibrian on the set, US sez, citing print edition pictures that "features pictures taken from a video security camera that show the two holding hands and kissing on a romantic dinner date at Mosun and Club M in Laguna Beach, California on March 7."
Additionally, Us reports that the new couple met for a three-hour tryst at the Malibu Beach Inn on March 14."
On a message at her website, LeAnn says, "This is a difficult time for me and my loved ones, but I appreciate all your continued support. I would like to assure all of you that this is a place for you to hear things directly from me and as you all know, not everything in our lives is always black and white."

Kenny Chesney has a second Greatest Hits offering in the offing May 19, his label sez.
The set will include a dozen of Kenneth's biggest ditties of the decade, plus three more tracks, including a new tune, "Out Last Night."
“We’ve been all kinds of places musically,” Kenny sez. “And it was a little hard knowing how to pull it all together. In the end, I think we wanted to reflect what we’ve sorta become known for. Brad Paisley's new studio effort, "American Saturday Night," will land sales-side on June 30, CMT.com reports.
It'll arrive two years and 11 days after his last album, proper, "5th Gear."
I'm not counting last year's "Play," which Brad envisioned as an instrumental album until (I'm assuming, the overlords at his label goaded- ordered?- him to tack some vox humana onto the effort...not that I'm complaining).
"ASN's" first single, "Then," lands at radio on Monday and you can buy it a week from Tuesday.
Meanwhile, is Brad's wife having breakfast with Sheryl Crow? Or is that just an internet rumor?
Either way, "Then" is directed at Brad's Mrs., actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

The Academy of Country Music have announced the winners of the Top New Female Vocalist, Male Vocalist and Vocal Duo or Group for the year's 44th annual give-out.
First time was the charm for Julianne as she bested Sarah Buxton and Ashton Shepherd. Ditto The Zac Brown Band who beat Eli Young Band and The Lost Trailers.
Jake Owen's re-appearance in the Male category must've helped because he topped tough competition in Jamey Johnson and James Otto.
So now the three artists jump into a competition for Best New Artist (overall, y'all), determined by you (with voting starting March 16 at www.VoteACM.com) with the results unveiled at the ACM Awards themselves on April 5 from Las Vegas and broadcast on finer CBS stations nationwide.
If you can't pick a winner, GAC will help ya decide with a special March 19 hosted by Sara Evans.

As (maybe) expected, Jewel has pulled out of "Dancing with the Stars" as the show heads to Monday's premiere. After initially being diagnosed with tendinitis in her knees, an MRI revealed that the songbird has fractures in both of her legs (EEK!).
Thus her departure, though she's sure to be an audience fixture on the broadcast, rooting on her hubby, Ty Murray.
Meanwhile, a woman who shares a resume stat with Jewel (host of "Nashville Star'), the gorgeous Nancy O'Dell, is also pulling out of the competition because her "torn meniscus will require knee surgery" (double EEK!).
So that means the two former "Nashville Star" hosts tapped to tap (and more) this season on "DWTS" are out. Former Hugh Hefner bed, um, I mean, Playmate, Holly Madison has already been announced as one of the replacements.

The Academy of Country Music have finally given us their nominations for Album of the Year for this year's awards handout (April 5 on CBS).
I couldn't figure out why the ACM delayed the long-player announcement until now (I'm not a Music City-insider and/or not savvy enough), but CMT (which is both the former and latter of the previous parenthetical portion of this sentence) sez it was because of "a revision in the qualifications. Previously, albums had to sell 300,000 copies to be considered, but that is no longer the case."
...or because the ACM wanted to "stunt" announce the noms to get more juice heading into the ceremony.

A lot of touring news this week, as I play catch up...

Toby Keith's "America's Toughest Tour" laying out this summer will feature Trace Adkins along for the tough stuff. The "Twin Towers of Musical Muscle" start their shows in New Jersey on June 18.
Meanwhile, in our Nation's Capitol: Did you hear that the director of the (national) Office of Management and Budget, whose iPod is stuffed full of country music, quoted Toby Keith before a House Budget Committee this week?
He also quoted another country singer, Montgomery Gentry.

New mama Jo Dee Messina will launch a slate of a dozen shows the day after Tax Day in Verona, New York. The Music Room Series will feature Jo Dee sitting in an intimate setting.
"I wanted to use this tour to give folks the opportunity to get to know me on a more personal level," JDM sez, "I'm leaving out the fancy production and using the show time to 'visit' with the audience for a while - as if they were to come to the house and sit with me in my music room. I think it will be a lot of fun. Instead of going to see a show, the audience will be a part of a show".

The day after the day after Tax Day will see the first date roll out on this year's edition of The Honky Tonk Tailgate Party, that's country tells us. Mark Wills returns to top off the bill. Trent Willmon is also back, joined by newbie Jeff Bates (Wills and Willmon were joined by Ray Scott and Buddy Jewell last year).

Lady Antebellum have won "Album Of The Year" at something called "Musiqtone's 4th Annual Musiqwards." (I've never heard of Musiqtone, but, then again, I know they've never heard of GGcolumn).
Meanwhile, the Lady A's will emcee a...fashion show for the Nashville Symphony April 21.
You know who also held a fashion show? Toby Keith, that's who.
Toby's TK Steelman line will feature a section of sleeveless shirts...That'll be convenient for Larry the Cable Guy, who never met at a sleeve, left for right, that he liked.
That leads me to this: Comedy Central's annual roasts of celebrities are always top-notch. The next one, of Larry, the said Cable Guy (Who killed at Jeff Foxworthy's roast several moons back), tapes Sunday and will air on the yuks channel on March 15...and Toby Keith will be among the roasters and let's hope he brings on on his TK Steelman sleeveless specials as a gift for LTCG.

Our Best to Our Buddy: After another great show with Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin Thursday night in Baltimore, Buddy Miller was hit with a heart attack. The attack occurred in Charm City, which was actually quite fortunate- if it had to happen, because Baltimore is home to Johns Hopkins Hospital, one of (if not) the best medical centers in America (and I know, from experience).
Buddy had triple-bypass heart surgery on Friday at Hopkins. And after a successful surgery, he'll convalesce in Balmer for several weeks.

How Do I Change?: LeAnn Rimes already owns a massive record on the Billboard Hot 100 charts...and she's done it again.
"What I Cannot Change," LeAnn's latest, in a remixed version, has topped Billboard's Hot Dance Club chart, thus becoming the first country artist to top BB's "Hot Country Song Songs cart and the whole dance music thingie.

Bring a Can of Beans...: Amid the massive treasury of country music writing, reviewing and reporting you'll find at The 9513 is a dandy feature on "Forgotten Artists." The latest is on Boxcar Willie. The Rascal Flatts dudes have decided the winner of their contest to design the cover of their upcoming (4/7) "Unstoppable" album. The winner is one Chris Kubik with the shot I've co-opted at the left. To check out the actual cover, click here (enter at your own risk).
The Flatt-sicles announced Chris as the winner before their Madison Square Garden set last night and then adorned the stage in "studded and bejeweled jeans."
And...I always considered Rascal Flatts the Duran Duran of country music, but...: Pat Benatar?!?! A songwriter who wrote Benatar's "Shadows of the Night" a quarter of a century ago is suing Rascal Flatts and their producers and their Disney handlers over the alleged use of the song in the first portion of the Flatts song "No Reins."
Kudos to Nashville Gab for sniffing this story out, since the lawsuit was filed last August...and for giving as a comparison of the ditties.
Also from the Flatts MSG concert: Jessica Simpson (my newest pretend girlfriend) had this to say before her opening slot before RF: "I've had times when my pants split right down the middle when I bent down to reach a note. Kenny Chesney is the subject of The Playboy Interview in the March issue of Hef's mag. In the issue, which lands on news stands tomorrow, the bunny ears notes of Kenny: "No musician has sold more concert tickets in the 21st century."

Meanwhile, Kenny was country's top money-maker in 2008, Billboard sez, raking in a ka-ching-a-ling of $90,823,990, the mag reckons. Madonna ($242,176,466) was the top money-maker in music overall in 2008, despite less-than-stellar album and other music sales; you make your money on tour, Billboard also sez, which is Kenny's bread and butter.
The Rascal Flatts dudes came in at #9 on the payout with $63,522,160; The Eagles at #11, raked in $61,132,213 and Miley Cyrus' take, at #15, was $48,920,806.
Taylor Swift came in at #16 with a booty of $45,588,730...and that doesn't include coin from the dates she opened for Brad Paisley.

Dierks Bentley's new platter, "Feel that Fire" debuts atop the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, knocking Taylor Swift's three-month reign there with "Fearless."
On the BB Top 200 Albums Chart, "Fire" enters the fray at #3 with 71,000 units moved. The new one from The Frays enters on top. Last week's topper, the new Springsteen set, dips to #2. Taylor follows Dierks at #4 and her sales were actually up in its zillionth week on the chart.
Meanwhile, "Fire's" title track is sitting atop the Billboard and R&R country singles chart, his sixth zenith-maker.

At first glance, it'll look like a ZZ Top show...but it's actually Shooter Jennings and Jamey Johnson you catch when CMT debuts the next edition of "Crossroads" on March 23.

LeAnn Rimes was (?) surprised during the announcements when "Early Show" co-showtess Maggie Rodriguez told LeAnn that she would pick up this year's Home Depot Humanitarian Award.
Before she picks up that award, LeAnn's new TV movie, "Nora Roberts' Northern Lights," will premiere on Lifetime March 21.

CBS, of course, will broadcast the awards on April 5.
