Anyone here who tried this special Batangas driedfish? This canno't be found easily in other place, because the fish which we call BIYA, only lives in a place like the Taal lake. Best cooked fried and roasted, with matching vinegar when served. One of the best from Batangas, try it when you go there.

Tsokolate / Tabliya

Chocolate has been known to Filipinos' since the arrival of Spaniards. They brought cacao tree that time and taught local Filipino to cultivate and make it a chocolate.

In Batangas, where cacao tree is also cultivated, we also drink tsokolate. Aside from kapeng barako, this is an alternative for those serious drinkers. I remember before, we used to buy tabliya (chocolate made of cacao) in the market and use it for our tsokolate. Sometimes, we use tabliya for our delicious champorado.

Butse, Sagimis, Banana Q at Kamote Q

These are some batanggenyo food that you'll surely love. Though found everywhere in our country, these foods are also found easily on every streets specially in city proper. These are butse or butse-butse, sagimis, banana cue and camote cue. Combined with palamig or local drinks with gulaman and sago served with varietis of colors, for sure your hunger will be satisfied.

Butse is made of camote inside. As for the orange cover, I don't know what it is. Best served while hot with a cold palamig.

Sagimis on the other hand is made of banana, wrapped with a wrapper and then fried in pan and mixed with sugar. Sometimes they put some coloring to make it reddish.

Camote Cue is fried slice camote with sugar on stick. Same with banana cue, mixed with sugar on the frying pan. I love the combo with black gulaman.

Now I miss Batangas....

Tagumpay Mini Mart

Several years ago, before big department stores like SM, Robinson and even Fiesta Mall in Lipa came to existence, batanggenyo's (from Lipa and near municipalities) only knew Tagumpay Mini Mart. Yes, that's right. For new batanggenyo's, maybe didn't know this establishment anymore. They have the options of going to big department store's right now, why bother visit this small and old building. But for old folks like me(not that old), I knew how important Tagumpay Mini Mart played in the development of Lipa.

Behind the old building lies thousands of stories about this establishment. Though old, it has been an icon in Batangas on its prime. I remember those days where almost all types of people from all over Lipa and nearby municipalities visit this place to do their grocery. On the top floor, there was even a refreshment parlor where we usually eat some pancit and halo-halo. On the ground floor, there was a VHS/Beta tapes rental while the ground floor have the school supplies. Entrance gate house a small store for selling cigarettes. We don't have any choice that time, Tagumpay is the biggest mini mart in Lipa City. Life is simple that time.

Now, it seems the building has been forgotten. People are not flocking there anymore to buy their groceries. I didn't enter the building the last time I went there, but for sure, lots of changes happen. Gone are the days that people of Lipa in all walks of life will go there to do shopping. Now it's like a casualty of modern Lipa that soon will be forgotten by many but not by those true Batanggenyo like me who witnessed it's days of glory.

I am a notebook enthusiast. I must admit its not easy for me let the day passed without touching my laptop. My first notebook was purchased when I was in Taiwan, wayback in 2006. I was working in an ACER member company that time. It was an Acer Aspire which I can say is a very nice model. I haven’t had any major problem since I bought it. Then early this year, satisfied with an ACER brand, I purchased a new Acer Aspire 2920Z laptop during the IT show here in Singapore. It was also a very nice model, suitable for my daily blogging and internet needs. Aside from that, I also have my company supplied notebook, with various brands like Toshiba, Fujitsu, HP and IBM. Sometimes, I even have 3 laptops on my table which I am using. Not that I am bragging but my job also requires me to work offsite and access our servers at home. I’ve encountered lots of notebook issues and managed to resolve it. Notebooks are not made to last forever. Time will come that some of its parts or accessories willl eventually broke down. History of Lipa City Colleges

Lipa Business School was founded by the late Ricardo and Marcela Bonilla in July 1947. Its humble origins began with classes attended in rented buildings along B. Morada Ave., Lipa City, adjacent to the old Lipa City Hall. The first total enrollment had a population of sixty-five (65) students comprising first and second years of the secondary course.

In answer to the growing population during the school year 1948-1949, the school had a daring decision to rent a bigger building not far from the former site. It has paved the way to offer complete Secondary Course and Collegiate Courses, such as Liberal Arts, Junior Moral Education, Commerce and One Year Collegiate Secretarial Course.

In line with the dedication and hard work of the late founder of the school, they relocated to a more spacious location with an existing edifice at G.A. Solis St., Lipa City, where the school is permanently housed. With a sincere intent to make the school be noteworthy in the cause of being the first to serve with three levels of education – elementary, secondary and tertiary – the name of the school was changed to Lipa City Colleges on its third year of operation. Incidentally, the College of Law was opened. Successes were reaped year after year with the increasing population.

The cause to serve the people in the City of Lipa and adjacent towns through quality education continued the succeeding years of the school's existence. In line with its expansion, the school has acquired adjoining lots where four (4) concrete buildings, the frontal one of five-storey and the three others on all sides on 4-storey. In this present day, it has more than three thousand (3000) students and is introducing new courses in the field of Hotel and Restaurant Management, Tourism and Criminology.

Itinuturing na buwan ng mga bulaklak ang buwan ng Mayo. Siguro dahil tag init ito at maraming halaman ang namumulaklak. Sa aming baranggay, masaya ang mga tao lalo na ang mga bata pagka ganitong buwan dahil dito ginaganap ang Santacruzan o Flores de Mayo.

Sa buong buwan, may pagtitipon na ginaganap gabigabi sa isang maliit na kapelya na kung tawagin sa amin eh “tuklong”. Bakasyon ng mga estudyante kaya malaya silang nakakagala kahit gabi. Bago pa man sumapit ang Mayo, abala na ang mga taga tuklong para magbahay bahay at kumuha ng mga taong gustong magpa-alay sa loob ng buwan ng Mayo. Gabi gabi ginagawa ang pag-aalay ng bulaklak sa mahal na birhen. Ang isang pag-aalay ay binubuo ng tatlong pangunahing karakter, ang may alay at ang dalawa nitong kasama na kung tawagin ay pakpak. Nakaupo sila sa harap ng altar na nasa unahan ang may alay habang nasa likod ang mga pakpak. Ang mga bisita naman eh nakaupo o nakatayo sa likuran. Pag-aalay ng kandila, bulaklak, awitan at panalangin ang nagaganap sa buong okasyon.

Sa katapusan ng Mayo naman magaganap ang pinaka hihintay ng lahat na parada ng Santacruzan. Halos lahat ng mga nag alay sa buwan ng Mayo ay sumasama sa parada. Pinangungunahan sila ng isang Reyna Elena kasama ang kanyang Constantino.

Sinisimbulo ng okasyong ito ang paghahanap ni Reyna Elena ng Banal na Krus noong unang panahon. Matapos nilang matagpuan ito sa Jerusalem ay dinala nila ito sa Rome. Nagkaroon ng magarbong selebrasyon ang mga katoliko na ginugunita pa hanggang ngayon dahil dito.

Last year, if I am not mistaken, one real estate agent contacted me about this newly built community in Taal Batangas. It was called the Taal View Heights and has a promise of overlooking scenery of Taal volcano. I don’t have any plan of acquiring any properties that time so I declined the offer. I was also discouraged when they said I cannot acquire it using PAGIBIG scheme. Anyway, on this blog I will show and discuss about this place.

Batangas Volkswagen Association

Here is a short history and beginning of a strong friendship that binds them despite our differences, roots and age!

It was during the VOLKS FEST held at Filinvest West Gate, Alabang last April 28, 2007 which was sponsored by the Volkswagen Club of the Philippines (VWCP)-Laguna Chapter when a group composed of brothers Clark and Niño Apuntar; Janno Mission with his friends Alvin and Mac; and Dan Austria. These VW folks from Batangas just tail gated with the bug runners from VWCP-Quezon without informing the latter group- all they have in mind was “JUST FOLLOW THE BUGS”. Upon arrival at the venue, VWCP-Quezon was recognized through the public announcement system. The crowd was unaware that there were also Batangueños in their fleet and who were not recognized; with this- the idea of organizing a group for Volkswagen enthusiasts from the Land of the Brave was born.

After the show, this group stopped over at Shell Gas Station in Turbina for dinner. There, they discussed the experience of their very first “bug run”. Feeling the need to be organized and recognized, they decided to meet again after a month. The day was set, on May 27, 2007 they will meet again but this time they will invite potential members who should be VW enthusiasts and VW nuts who are of good standing in their community, down-to-earth, and most of all a good friend and team player.

The group brainstormed for a name that will best describe them as a club. They have to have a name that will distinguish them from the short-lived Batangas-based VW group that came before them. Bat Boks was suggested by Janno, a short cut for Batangas Volkswagen. Quoting Niño during that meeting, “Bat Boks. Parang tanong ‘di ba? -Ba’t Boks? Boks eh!” (Batboks. Sounds like a question- Why Volks? Volkswagen, Nothing else!”) And the body approved the motion. Then later during that meeting, the group laid down the foundation of the newly formed Bat Volks. Objectives were set and they are as follows: a. To have an organized club of VW enthusiasts from Batangas which promotes camaraderie and humility; b. To have worthwhile activities for members; c. To interact with other groups of VW enthusiasts and; d. To reach out to the community (social responsibility). On June 9, 2007 the Batboys met with Ed Roces and Mawie Chanco of VWCP National Center for a possible affiliation. The meeting went good and both parties agreed on the conditions and requirements of forming a Chapter of the VWCP. After weekly bug runs and meetings since their first meeting, BatVolks became an official affiliate of the VWCP National Center on July 23, 2007- a holiday in Batangas (Mabini Day).

Batangas Blades

The Batangas Blades (or the LBC-Batangas Blades) is a former professional basketball team of the now-defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association from 1998-2002.

It's monicker was taken from the province's popularity in making Balisong (a Filipino-made knife). It also played for a short time in the Philippine Basketball League after the MBA folded in 2002.

The team played its home games at the De La Salle Lipa SENTRUM from 1998-2001 and at the Lipa City Convention Center in 2002. The PBL version of the Blades also played a number of games at both venues. To compensate the loss of the Manila Metrostars after both clubs' merger, the Blades played a few home games in Manila's Mail and More Sports Complex (now San Andres Gym).

In 1998, the Metropolitan Basketball Association was formed as a regional-based professional league which also challenged the commercial Philippine Basketball Association. The Blades were paraded in their first season by former Adamson Falcons players Eddie Laure, Dennis Madrid, former La Salle Green Archer and part-time comedian Maui Roca and Jeffrey Sanders. The Blades were owned by delivery giant LBC of Santi Araneta.

Laure became the Blades' star player but the team had a disappointing 10-12 win-loss slate despite a late push for the playoffs. Despite Ralph Rivera and Fil-Am Stephen Antonio's arrival in 1999, the Blades went 12-18 and lost in three games to the San Juan Knights in the Northern Conference Wild-Card series.

In 2000, Batangas missed the playoffs with a 12-14 record.

In 2001, the Blades and the 1999 MBA National Champion Manila Metrostars were merged into a single team, retaining the Batangas Blades name. With the merger, the team became a stronger squad with Eddie Laure, Jeffrey Sanders and Metrostar superstars 2000 MBA MVP Rommel Adducul and Alex Compton. They also added LBC to its team name, making it the LBC Batangas Blades.

The Blades became the team to beat in the Northern Conference, compiling an 11-3 win-loss record in the first phase of the MBA season, but lost to the San Juan Knights in the playoffs. During the second phase of the tournament, which was for the MBA National Championship, the Blades recorded another 11-3 record but this time edged the Knights 3-1 in the Northern Finals to enter their first finals appearance in history. The Blades defeated the Negros Slashers, 3-1 to win their first MBA national title. Laure was named as the MVP of the 2001 season.

In the 2002 season, Batangas lost Adducul to the returning Pangasinan Waves but made its return trip to the finals after scoring a huge upset over the top team in the North, the Olongapo Volunteers, in a one-game match for the finals spot. The Blades then lost to the Slashers via a three-game sweep in the First Conference of the season. The MBA National tournament was played but was later discounted due to the folding of the MBA.

After the closure of the MBA, Batangas joined the amateur commercial league Philippine Basketball League. The team had Alex Compton and Jeff Sanders, but did not have the old Blades squad they had in the MBA as Laure played for the Welcoat Paintmasters. Instead, the team added some amateur players on their squad such as St. Benilde Blazers tandem of Al Magpayo and Ronald Capati and NU Bulldog Froilan Baguion. The team did retain the LBC-Batangas Blades name as the team placed fourth in the 2002 PBL Challenge Cup. In the 2003 PBL Unity Cup, the Blades did not make it to the semifinals, as the team disbanded for good.

Basilica de San Martin de Tours

Minor Basilica de San Martin de Tours (Taal Cathedral) is considered as the largest in Asia and biggest church in the Philippines. San Martin de Tours is the Patron Saint of Taal with the feast day every November 11th of the year.

The church was first built by father Diego Espina in 1575 in present day San Nicolas but abandoned in 1754 due the eruption of Taal and rebuild in 1755. Then an earthquake shook it down in 1849. Construction of the present church was started in 1856 that was supervised by an architect, Luciano Oliver.

The Taal Basilica is quite famous with its high ceilings, ornate chandeliers and unusual facade. Its façade is baroque and consists of a single mass of stone shaped into rich complex designs. The church, however, is a fusion of styles with arched openings, alternating segmental canopies and arches of assymmetric shapes. It stands 96 meters long and 45 meters wide and is situated in a plateau in the heart of Taal.

Punta de Santiago Lighthouse

Also know as Calatagan Lighthouse. Built in 1890, it is one of the earliest lighthouses that still function up to this date. Since it was constructed, no running ship has ever ran aground. However, due to high maintenance cost, the revolving search lights were replaced by a puny torch light that blinks at regular intervals.

How to get there : The lighthouse can be reached by taking a jeepney from the town proper of Catalagan.
