Pineda Psychobilly Meeting 2009

The Pineda Psychobilly Meeting (originally held in the adjoining town, Calella) has it's origins in 1992, when a basic and less elaborate form of the festival brought Psychobilly to the Spanish coast for the first time.
Since then the festival has evolved into one of the most important Psychobilly festivals in the world. It is held annually during the last weekend in June and the current location of the main event is on the beach in Pineda de Mar.
The Psychobilly Meeting has turned into a full week's Psychobilly holiday with concerts and parties begining on the Tuesday before the main festival and ending on the following Monday. Aswell as the concerts at the marquee during the weekend, there are also concerts in local clubs, parties and dj's at a bar on the beach, pool parties and other activities. Sun, sangría and Psychobilly... the Pineda Psychobilly Meeting really is a perfect holiday!
This year the Meeting kicked-off on Tuesday, June 23rd with a band at the Beach Bar at night. Spanish band "THE NU-NILES" kicked-off the party in style with their special brand of neo-rockabilly. DJ Psycho Rebel & DJ Sinner a gogo kept the night rocking and DJ Ghostrider 59 and DJ Koefte De Ville had us shaking till the early hours; the atmosphere was unbeatable, the 23rd is a big festival in Spain, during which we celebrate the summer solstice so there were fireworks all night... a great start to the Meeting!
On Wednesday, June 24th we enjoyed the performances of NITRO 17 and CAT O NINE TAILS in the venue Magma. DJ Psycho Rebel and DJ Sinner a gogo kept the party going all night long. On Thursday, June 25th we enjoyed a free barbeque at the beach bar and the atmosphere was set by DJ Pepe 7Wheels. That night, also at the Magma, the djing was left in the careful hands of DJ Koefete de Ville. The audience witnessed energetic and bone shaking performances form the vibrant BEAT DEVILS, Spanish old-timers BRIOLES, the classic French band ASTROZOMBIES (bosting one of the most talented base players in Psychobilly) and closing with the ever-gory, ever-rocking "DEMENTED ARE GO".
On Friday we were treated to another free barbeque at the beach bar while DJ Francis knocked-out the tunes.
For Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th the venue is changed to a large marquee on the beach in Pineda which accommodates a lot more people. Here we can find bars selling food and drink, tables and benches in the open-air, a market selling t-shirts, records, clothes and other merchandise... and of course, a large stage prepared for a 3 day intensive Psychobilly onslaught.
Friday night kicked-off at 21.00 with the superb performance of GRAVEYARD JOHNNY'S. This was there first time at the Meeting, but it I hope it won't be the last. Brandishing a very fresh combination of classic Teddy-boy rockabilly combined with modern influences, folk and punk they had the extremely difficult task of being the fist band to step on the stage and has to deal with poor sound, technical problems on stage and all the problems that come with the responsability of being the 1st band. It would have been great to see them again without the technical problems, hopefully in another edition!!
After these guys it was the turn of REZUREX. Fronted by Daniel de Leon, this LA combo is increasingly popular in Spain and a regular at the Meeting. They performed flawlessly... but unfortunately the poor sound was to cause problems for all the bands on Friday night. Despite an outstanding performance form the bands on Friday night, the sound technician didn't arrive to fix the sound problems until the very end of the first night, when there were just 3 songs left!!
CARAVANS is a band that never lets down an audience, playing a folky-english style of something between Ted and Psychobilly... a great performance ruined by the sound. The same can be said for LONG TALL TEXANS and even for PAUL FENECH. Great performances ruined by the sound problems.
All in all the line-up on Friday was outstanding and the bands gave 110%, but there was no excuse for the sound technician arriving at 2.30 am when it was nearly over. DJ Tommy Drocker and DJ Calamity Man spun the tunes for the rest of the night.

On Saturday 27th DJ Ghostrider 59 played the tunes at the Beach Bar. When the marquee opened on Saturday night the sound technician was there.
There was no comparison for the sound on Friday and Saturday nights: GUITAR SLINGERS took the stage at 21.00 and rocked us to the core with their elaborate combination of 80's style Psychobilly with their own special cocktail of influences ranging from country and punk to English Pub songs.. fantastic!!
A fantastic surprise came next with the spectacular, powerful and agressive performance of Japanese band "BATTLE OF NINJAMANZ"... when the band finished their energetic set the audience was starving for more, insistently asking for encores.
The GO-GETTERS where the next band to take the stage. It was hard to follow an act such as the BATTLE OF NINJAMANZ, and especially for a band that play neo-rockabilly. The GO-GETTERS have a large fan-base in Spain, but mainly amongst Rockabilly's. The GO-GETTERS had a difficult time following-on from BATTLE OF NINJAMANZ, and the absence of their die-hard fans didn't help.
Next up was ex- KREWMEN singer "MAD DOG COLE". He returned to the scene a couple of years ago bringing us Psychobilly classics in his extremely distinctive voice and style. Although his style mainly appeals to old KREWMEN fans (of which there are plenty) his style and performance has really improved since his return and his show gets the whole audience rocking... whether you're a fan or not.
The band that closed Saturday night (an excellent choice in my opinion) was FRENZY. Frenzy has played on numerous occasions at the Psychobilly Meeting over the years, but never before as a headliner. They deserve this position. FRENZY proved once again that they are truly in a league of their own, The skill, energy and compenetration of the band is a level above any other Psychobilly band. During the song "Clockwork Toy" huge inflatable balls and dolphins were released onto the audience, causing us all to jump up and down even more... and as always, they blew our heads-off with their hit "I SEE RED".
DJ Psycho Rebel and DJ Sinner a gogo took the controls and kept the dance floor full for the rest of the night.
On Sunday 28th we were treated to a pool party at Hotel Paradis with paella and sangría while DJ Tommy Drocker and DJ Calamity Man played the tunes.
The Djing on Sunday night was left to DJ Ghostrider 59. The sudience enjoyed the spooky B-movie style of Spanish band MOTORZOMBIS kicking-off the nights concerts. This was followed by an explosive performance from THE ARKHAMS, a band from the States that's hitting hard this year... and that went down a storm at the Meeting!! Old-timers SURF RATS brought back fond memories to original Psychobillies; P.O.X. gave a powerful performance and RICOCHETS provided another treat for fans of classic old-school Psychobilly.
The 2009 Psychobilly was put to rest with one final party at the Beach Bar on Monday wher the last remaing Psychobillies enjoyed the end of their holiday with a "battle of the DJ's", plenty of cold drinks and the final few hours of sand, sea and sun... until next year!
Another fabulous edition all in all, now we must wait another year for the next one!!

In seara asta s-a terminat si cu distractia de marti seara de la radio Gong... Gata, asa dintr-o data... O, dulce resemnare... cu asta ramanem... :). E trist, dar adevarat... Se pare ca majoritatea initiativelor mai rock'n'roll sunt destinate esecului... Ce sa-i facem, "bad luck..." Asa ca m-am hotarat sa-mi beau portia de bacardi cu cola si sa ma uit la niste "suicide girls" dragute cu tatuaje dragute...

Oameni buni... Am vazut Social D.... Da, chiar i-am vazut... Si a fost frumos, grozav, excelent, nemaipomenit... A fost frumos, cred ca este de ajuns sa spun doar atat... Un conceet mult, mult asteptat... Cam vreo 10 ani... Si a fost pe masura asteptarilor... Nu toata lumea a simtit ca si mine, sunt convins... Poate nimeni... Dar chiar mi-au dat lacrimile ascultand Sick Boy si Don't Drag me down si Story Of My Life... Da, poate suna patetic, dar chiar mi-au dat lacrimile... Nu de emotie... Ci pentru ca le-am simtit adanc in inima mea... Si sa nu uit Reach For the Sky... A fost cum trebuia sa fie... Singurul lucru trist este ca nu am avut pe nimeni apropiat cu care sa impart bucuria de a fi acolo... Si linistea...

Deschiderea a fost facuta de Durango Riot (SWE), punk-stoner, niste tinerei care pot sa dea lectii multor, de fapt majoritatii trupelor de pe plaiurile noastre... Left Alone, amuzanti, cu un " Rancid touch"... Si ei au sunt foarte bine... Punk-rock melodic ce te bine dispune...

Vineri au cantat The Silver Shine... Au cantat bine, dar am fost mult prea obosit pt. a putea aprecia cum trebuie sau mai bine zis pt. a putea rezona la atmosfera din sala...

Astazi am avut o zi destul de grea... Daca tot am avut parte de lucruri bune zilele trecute...

Si in curand ma duc sa dorm... Asadar, dragi cititori va doresc o noapte placuta...

Mai este putin pana la ziua mult asteptata... Adica plecarea la Viena pentru a vedea trupa la care visez de 10 ani sa o vad live.... Social Distortion... Din pacate voi merge doar cu un amic... Nu sunt destui oameni carora sa le placa muzica destul de mult incat sa faca sacrificii... Eu mia-am dorit asta de atat de multa vreme... Sunt curios cum va fi, cum suna, prezenta scenica si chestii din astea... Si sper sa nu fiu dezamagit de cine stie ce tampenie... E aiurea ca-mi sunt prichindeii bolnaviori si nu ma pot concentra mai bine pe eveniment, cu atat mai mult cu cat Vineri, pe 12 iunie canta si The Silver Shine in TM. Si cum eu sunt cel care se ocupa de ei, am destule de facut... Plus petrecerea rock'n'roll...
E greu cand te ajunge stresul din urma, cand te saturi de lume, cand nu poti sa faci destule, cand nu sunt bani sa faci lucruri ce ar trebui facute... Este frustrant, dar le depasesc...

Aveam in cap o gramada de lucruri pe care sa le scriu, dar fiinca mi-am intrerupt gandurile, am uitat si gata. S-au dus naibii toate tampeniile pe care voiam sa le astern aici.

Imi pare faorte pentru ca voi fi sinur la conceret, nu va mai fi nimeni cu mine care sa-mi impartaseasca bucuria... Iar Social D este o trupa serioasa... Cred... Sau cine stie, or fi multe alte trupe tinere mult mai bune, dar eu am ramas blocat in timp... :). Ma cam indoiesc de asta, dar cert ese ca nu va fi nimeni cu care sa ma bucur de o asemenea intamplare...

Macar imi voi lua portia de nostalgie, de energie, de tristete si regrete... Si in adancul sufletuui sper sa fie frumos... SD a ramas singura posibilitate de a-mi mai vedea unii dintre"idoli" pe scena... :)
Si este o ocazie nesperata, care inseamna enorm de mult pt. mine....

In rest, sa vina lume vineri, la concert... Si sa-mi treaca lehamitea, cu toate ca nu cred sa se intample in graba...

Dar las astea la o parte si ma gandesc din nou la SD. Nu-mi fac vise, doar sper... sper sa fie cum imi doresc...

De niste zile sunt intr-o stare morala proasta, care nu seacutizeaza, dar nici nu trece. E aiurea. Incerc sa ma adun, reusesc, apoi iarasi ma loveste. Si mai nasol e ca nu prea am motive serioase.
Imi vine sa las totul balta, sa nu mai fac nimic, sa nu mai ascult muzica, sa nu mai pun suflet in ce fac, sa renunt, sa las sufletul sa mi se goleasca... Sa las dracu' tot ce simt, sa renunt la rock'n'roll sa-mi bag pula in lume... Sa-i fut pe toti cu ranga, sa dau foc tuturor, sa ridic un rug imens si sa ma pis napalm pe el... mda... sa vedem.... eu sunt cu picioru' pe taramu' gri... concertul The Shadowbirds a iesit bine, frumos etc. a fost un succes. dar acolo unde sunt meseriasi, mai bine tu bagi. nu are ce cauta un amator, ca mine, printre meseriasi, printre cei care se pricep, virtuosi si asa mai departe... asadar sunt intr-un fel de dilema... sa mai rup de la mine, sa-mi sacrific timp din care duc lipsa, sa-mi mai pese sau sa renunt naibii la incercarile disperate de a promova ceva, de a incerca sa aranjez evenimente, pe care altii le-ar putea face mult mai bine, dar care de fapt prefera sa frece menta?

1.In the beginnig, please introduce the members of the band.

Ati: Shadowbirds are a three piece band right now. Cherry Chainsaw plays doublebass,
Driller - stand-up-drums and me, Ati EDGE on guitar and vocals.

2.Could you tell me in a few words the history of the band?

Ati: We started the band in February of 2007 as a side project of some members of The Silver Shine.
Our first MCD came out last year on Crazy Love Records in Germany. We played some shows after the record and now we just decided we will continue the band as ATI EDGE AND THE SHADOWBIRDS in the future, so it will be a solo project.
Our good friend of ours called "Ivan the Great" will join us on some shows as second guitarist and Sick Wolfman will hit the drums as guest sometimes on the stage. We will record our first full-length album in the next weeks.

3.Which are the infuences for The Shadowbirds? Bands, musicians or other thing...

Ati: Our main influences are the old horror movies from the 50's and 60's... Drakula, Monster of Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein,
The Creature from the Black Lagoon and of course the "new school" movies like Friday 13th, Leatherface, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.
Musically we like the 50's horror rockabilly, some good 60's garage stuff and 80's psychobilly like Demented Are Go, Meteors,
The Monsters, etc. Personally I'm fan of Tom Waits, Reverend Beatman, Dead Elvis...

4.What about the psychobilly scene in Hungary? Are there many bands? And the public?

Ati: There are a couple of psychobilly bands here in Hungary. Gorilla is just back and hope they will be active later this year.
There's Voodoo Allen who plays old style psychobilly by Hungarian language. Yellow Spots who are mixing swing with psycho...... and of course my main band... called The Silver Shine. I can say the scene is growing in Hungary. We are booking a couple of bands
from the abroad also and I can say there's more interests ately.

5.Could you name a few bands that you enjoyed to play with?

Ati: Lee Rocker (USA), Dead Elvis (NL), Stressor (RU), Koffin Kats (USA), The Quakes (USA), etc.
These are just the biggest names but we enjoyed all the shows with all the bands that we played.

6.If I remember correctly you played at a festival in Kiev, Ukraine. Will you tell me a few words about it?

Ati: Yeah, that was a damn great festival! It was the first time when the band flew first time. There were a lot of people and enjoyed the festival so much. We met with real nice guys and bands. I was really happy to play together on one stage with Stressor there.

7. Tell me please about other shows that you had and will have.

Ati: Huhhh.... The best ones in Kijev at Ukrabilly Bang Festival as I said, in Germany at Psychomania Rumble No.2..... it was a three days psychobilly party with the biggest names from the scene, in Augsburg with Dead Elvis, in Vienna with Lee Rocker, in Poland with The Jet-Sons, in Prague at Moonlight mayhem Festival and some shows in Hungary as support Koffin Kats, The Quakes, etc. Our European tour is booked and we will play some shows in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain and probably Czech Rep. in March..... we will support Phantom Rockers in Bremen, 25 Ta Life in Montpellier, etc.
Well, on the other hand we joined to a Hungarian booking agency named Zombie 11. They are doing right and really enthusiastic.
Not a typical psycho booking agency but I guess the best choice for us. We are the first psychobilly band on this agency together with The Silver Shine besides some great punk and metal bands so we hope Shadowbirds will reach some really great places in Hungary and
all over the world this way.

8. Not long ago Silver Shine were in town, and now you're next. WHat do you know about the scene here?

Ati: Yeah, I played in Romania with The Silver Shine a couple of times... Twice in Timisoara, once in Bucharest and once in Satu Mare.
We've got very good time there. We enjoyed Romania a lot and we are really glad to come back with my solo project now.
You haven't got psychobilly scene exactly, only a few kids like psychobilly and try to spread the disease. It's absolutely normal thing.
The psychobilly was nearly dead in Hungary after the first wave but the building started some years ago and now you can meet more psychos also on shows. By the way your building started also and I'm sure you will have some bands in the future and more international bands will tour over there also. That's great that your punk and hardcore scene is opened in Romania and
it's very important that they can support another underground styles also. But we will see it soon.....! :-)

9. What is the band that you would agree to play with without hesitating?

Ati: Motorhead

10. What are the 3 things you would take with you to a deserted island?

Ati: A drumkit, a double bass and a guitar.... and we would definitely have a great time there:-)

Azi dimineata a fost unul din putinele momente in care ma uit la televizor... Asa s-a nimerit... Si am vazut, pe MTV, Billy Idol - Cradle of Love... Asta m-a facut sa-mi amintesc anii aceia de la inceputul liberatii noastre cand tanjeam dupa un strop de ceva.... Gagicuta aceia din clip, pisicuta aia balnda care zgrie rau, m-a facut sa ma gandesc la anii in care daca iti placea Billy Idol erai "alfel"... Mama, ce mai vremuri... Era fain Idol pe vremea aia... Era ceva diferit la TV... :) Alte vremuri, alte ganduri... Vremuri in care nu stiam ca exista Bacardi, nu auzisem de Sabato sau Vian, nu aveam habar de The Meteors, Demented Are Go, Patsy Cline sau Johnny Cash... Nu aveam habar cum va fi in 2009 sau ca voi avea 2 copilasi...
Erau vremuri mai inocente, pline de naivitate si sperante false. Dar a fost frumos...

Ma uitam peste DVD - ul Give Em The Boot... Si am realizat a nu stiu cata oara cate lucruri pierdem... Atat de multe chestii faine se petrec prin lume, iar noi suntem aici, prinsi, legati, fara prea multe sanse, fara prea multe sperante... Suntem cei care trebuie sa se multumeasca cu putin, cei care apreciaza fiece farama de sunet, cei care inghitim pe nerasuflate lucruri, care supraestmam orice lucru... Trist, dar asta pare a fi soarta noastra... Probabil ca daca dintr-o data am avea prea mult, nu am mai aprecia la justa valoare, dupa cat am indurat... Naiba stie, gandurile imi zboara prin minte, nu apuc sa le scriu pe toate... Nu pot sa exprim cee ce simt... Sunt sigur ca nu ma pot face inteles asa cum ar trebui... Suntem atat de inversunati incat nu ne-am putea bucura de multe lucruri... Sunt atat de inversunat incat voi ramane un nemultumit petru totdeauna... Si cu o lehamite, cu un mare dezgust in suflet...
