For the first time Sue Lowday is selling her work on the Isle of Wight at the Isle of Wight Jazz Festival. Sue is presenting her superb quality Italian and English hide belts for ladies and gentlemen with a choice of 22 colours made to the customers requirements while they wait. The belts are exceptional value starting at £26 and are made to last for many years. Sue is considered to be one of the top craftspeople working with leather today, her designs are made by hand in her workshop located in a listed 19th C. comb works in Sheffield. Last year the Walsall Leather museum purchased several of her sculptural hide and pig skin bags for their permanent collection, adding to the six belts they purchased five years ago. Sue also makes document bags, organiser and book covers, purses and cases. Special orders and commissions are welcome. Churros Bros: Supplying during the day and at the night market – fresh to order Spanish Churros served with thick chocolate and/or sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Truly scrumptious any time!

El Toro Contento: Serafin and Lorraine from our favourite local, totally authentic, Spanish Tapas Bar will be up with us serving REAL Paella, Pinxos and other real Spanish delicacies during the day and at the night market. Their Tapas Bar is two doors away from the Jazz Festival shop in Ventnor, so you can maybe imagine how delighted we are that they will be up at the Jazz Festival with us too! It is probably the only authentic Spanish tapas bar on the Isle of Wight. If you arrive in town earlier in the week, do make a reservation. There is always a warm welcome, food is cooked from scratch in traditional methods in their small kitchen with fresh produce sourced from Spain and locally, the Serano Ham is always at the ready, as is the daily specials board and super vegetarian option, along with the Spanish wines. Jane Cox Ceramics: “One of the Top Ten collectable potters currently working in the UK” P.Morrison, The Guardian, will be showing at the Isle of Wight Festival for the first time. She will be showing her vibrant elegant decorative and functional Ceramics; Jugs, vases, mugs, butter bells, decorative servers and large dishes In rich turquoises, blues and greens. Last year Jane Cox MA RCA was commissioned by the British Library to design some ceramics based on their Sacred Text exhibition and she will be showcasing some of these at the festival (new Kufic and Haj black & white). Prices range from £25-£28 (mugs) to £28-£36 (bowls) to £48-£80 (vases) to £80 - £250 servers and decorative dishes. The team from Peerless will be with us at the festival, displaying a range of their absoutely superb guitars for demonstration and sale. These guitars are now available year round on the Isle of Wight at The Music Shop, 6 Pier Street, Ventnor so pop along to the stall during your Stroller day or after 7pm for the free night market and chat with the makers, or pop into the Ventnor shop to see which ones are currently available on stock to buy immediately, or phone 01983 856200. On display will be a selection from their Jazz Artist, Master Player, Thinline Hollow and Bass Series as well as some acoustic Dreadnought, Jumbo and Grands. Kawai Pianos: Once again our festival partners will be with us, this year again. As well as having their EX-7 Shigeru 9’6” Concert Grand, a 7’ grand, a CA111 and the MP5 on use across our stages during the whole weekend, they will have a stand in the main house to showcase their high quality digital pianos and talk to you about the rest of the range of acoustic upright and grand pianos. Tuesday 17^th March 2009

Having had a very positive response to the re-structuring of the Jazz Festival for 2009 we are making the decision to hold fire until 2010. Although top line artists have been booked and all the necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a safe venue and least impact on Bonchurch, the worsening of the downturn in the economy since November 2008 means that the number of sponsorships, that are required, have not been forthcoming. Having explored all options it has been decided that it is in the best interests of live jazz, the Jazz Festival and the Island’s reputation for music, if the Jazz Festival is deferred until the weekend 9-10-11 April in 2010.
We realise that a lot of people will be disappointed but in the current economic climate we cannot be confident that the usual late ticket sales, upon which all ventures of this type rely, will materialise. We are therefore taking positive action to ensure the integrity of the business. All tickets will be valid for the equivalent events at East Dene in 2010 unless ticket holders request a refund. All refunds, cancellation fees and outstanding bills will be paid within one month.
A Reception and Presentation on the future plans for the Festival will be given at East Dene on Saturday 18^th April at 7.30pm for all who are supportive and positively interested in working together for the good of Jazz, Bonchurch and Ventnor and the Island. This will be a private reception for invitees and pre-registered supporters, so please telephone the Jazz Office on 856200 to register if you would like to come along.

A few samples are seen below. And if you can’t resist the smell of canvass, there are campsites on the outskirts of boutique Ventnor with facilities that get cleaned daily………

East Dene: (Allnatt Centres) Fascinating building with the majority of its interiors untouched over the centuries. Former home of the poet Swinburne, East Dene is in Bonchurch at the Eastern end of Ventnor. It is a residential centre for school field trips and students mostly but also offers hostel style accommodation to groups attending the jazz festival and is indeed the jazz festival venue. Strolling programme between a minimum of four stages main stages - in marquees on the main festival site and in local buildings including our fabulous churches around the greater Ventnor area. Where required, courtesy transport is available to get to the stages in outlying village locations from Ventnor town centre.



Music starts in the main marquees at midday on Friday, with music building up on all stages to 11pm. On Saturday and Sunday, music plays on all stages from 11am to 11pm and one stage opens later into Saturday night for those dancing away at the Messin’ Around Club Night. The main festival site also houses the fabulous 1930’s/1940’s themed bars which create a special atmosphere, arts and craft stands, sponsor displays, food including paella from our local Tapas Bar El Toro Contento and churros by the chirpy Churros Brothers, festival admin and information point.

Travelling by road to Ventnor:
From East Cowes Red Funnel car ferry terminal, follow signs to Newport then on to Ventnor by turning right at Blackwater.
From Fishbourne near Ryde, the main tourist route to travel is the A3055 through Sandown and Shanklin to Ventnor.
For travel from Yarmouth, follow signs to Newport then on to Ventnor by turning right at Blackwater. OR take the tourist route via Freshwater and along the “Military Road” on to Niton, St Lawrence and Ventnor.

Parking and transport arrangements should therefore be considered before arriving. We request that you either park in the many car parks of Ventnor town and esplanade or arrive and leave by the Number 3 Southern Vectis bus that runs past Bonchurch and into Ventnor Town Centre regularly until late in the night and connects Shanklin, Sandown, Newport and Ryde on its route via Ventnor.

Crossing the water:
No ferry company is currently committed to sponsor the costs of the Island’s jazz festival this year, which makes it very difficult to run a niche music festival on the Isle of Wight, so take your pick of whichever route suits you best. You can cross the Solent by car or, alternatives for foot passengers are to catch the Southampton-West Cowes Redjet service or the Portsmouth to Ryde FastCat service or the Hovertravel service from Southsea to Ryde. If you are coming to the Isle of Wight Jazz Festival from the mainland and you need a ferry, do book early as the ferries will be busy the weekend of the jazz festival, due to Easter holiday traffic coming on and going off the Island, in addition to the jazz festival. Shanklin station is the nearest train station and this is connected to Ventnor either by the Wightbus service or by taxi or the number 3 bus.

On the Isle of Wight Southern Vectis buses connect the Island. The number 3 directly serves Ventnor for the most hours a day and the number 6 provides an alternative route at various times. The Island’s main bus terminal is in Newport, from where all Island buses are linked. From East Cowes, catch the Newport bus and change to the number 3 or 6 to get to Ventnor. From Ryde bus station, take the number 3 to Ventnor.
