Many supermarkets now even offer a sanitizing wipe so you can clean off the shopping cart before you use it.

I don't know why, until now, this product never came across our staff, but finally there is a way to sanitize your toothbrush. Think about it. You stick that thing in your mouth (hopefully a few times a day!) and then you just either leave it on the bathroom counter, or put it in a cup. Think of the thousands... no wait... millions of germs and bacteria that instantly form on that damp surface. Yuck!

The Verilux CleanWave Portable Toothbrush Sanitizer is a new way to sanitize your toothbrush, and it's a small unit that runs on batteries. For only $24.95, it's a terrific and affordable way to eliminate germs, bacteria and viruses, and I'm sure will pave the way towards better oral health and overall health too. Too bad winter is over as that seems to be the time in my household where we all tend to get sick. But, I'm excited to try this Portable Toothbrush Sanitizer and see how it works!
Thanks for reading from Tools For Wellness

His process is simpler, he said that we can ask our Spiritual guides and Ascended Masters to do the activation on our behalf.

You may be asking yourself why anyone would want to experience this anyway.
Well, what if each of the newly awakened 10 strands were seen to be a key to open a door to new or expanded states of awareness, to open up opportunities of experiencing new levels of consciousness?

It cannot have escaped your notice that many ancient prophecies have highlighted the year 2012 as being an important time for humanity. The earth is moving towards an alignment with the Galactic Core, and is at this moment, moving more and more into the Photon Belt that carries new light and new information for us to raise our consciousness to new levels. If each of our 12 strands of DNA are activated, and if they truly are keys, then we can make the most of this galactic alignment and open ourselves to this new light and information as it pours down into our planetary and human systems.

A blend of meditation, study, service and intention will, I believe, activate our DNA, however there are several methods to accelerate the process and speed up our spiritual journey. Certain musical frequencies can support the process, and simple, highly focused techniques can be used.

Is the time right for you to experience this for yourself?

Zannie Rose is an Energy Therapist, Seminar Leader and DNA 12 Strand Activation expert. She has an international practice. In our youth, our tissues absorb and maintain high levels of silica— enabling our bodies to remain flexible, resilient, and energetic— but as we age, our silica levels steadily decline. Silica supplementation can be an aid in supporting healthy bones, joints and cartilage, skin, nails, hair, teeth and gums.

It's believed that silica supplementation may be a key factor in helping us maintain a healthier, more youthful, and pain-free body— and in reducing the body's natural recovery time.

Silica and the bones + joints

Calcium and Vitamin D alone are not sufficient for bone growth, density, strength, and flexibility. Silica, along with other trace minerals found in this formula, is needed to strengthen bones and increase collagen production. When exercise or physical activity is mentioned most of us instantly have visions of running endless miles or lifting weights in the gym. There are many options out there that are considered very effective especially if you are looking to improve or maintain your health.

As middle age approaches and passes the focus of physical activity is no longer about fitting into a bikini or having the biggest bulging muscles but is instead about living a longer quality life. If this is indeed your focus you may want to look at trying Qigong (Chi Gong). This ancient Chinese practice consists of a series of body movements with the focus on breathing.

The history of Qigong is rich and has been controversial. Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system however it is also considered by many to be to a spiritual movement. Three basic classifications of Qigong have emerged which include the martial, medical, and spiritual styles. In the west however Qigong has become very popular as an exercise alternative that provides tremendous overall health benefits.

In Chinese the word Qigong (Chi Gong) breaks down into two words the first is Qi which means life energy, vital energy, or life force. The second word is Gong which means accomplishing a skill through daily or steady effort and practice. The premise is that we are all born with Chi and by using our Chi we can gain health benefits that impact us mentally, spiritually and physically. Qigong not only calms the spirit and the mind there by reducing stress but has been shown to strengthen the immune system, strengthen and improve balance and posture, increase vitality, reduce hypertension, and build overall stamina. A committed practice of Qigong also improves the function of the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the circulatory system, the digestive system, and the lymphatic system, all of which are extremely important to aging well and living a better quality life.

Qigong is generally divided into two basic types "soft" Qigong (ie. Tai Chi) for the overall health of body, mind and spirit, and "hard" Qigong (ie. Martial Arts) for concentration, discipline and strength training. Many forms or styles can easily be done by all ages and physical abilities including those individuals that are physically challenged. Regardless of which type you choose Qigong is an attractive activity as it allows you to exercise right in your own home if this is desired and benefits can be achieved in as little as 20 minutes a day.

Classes are widely available if a group setting is desirable or if you wish to stay at home in a private setting many books and DVD's are available to help you get started. Remember that Qigong takes practice and commitment with the focus on proper breathing techniques, specific postures and mental focus. Incorporating Qigong into your lifestyle will bring you many added benefits that most exercise routines can not offer. Qigong will help you cultivate a positive outlook on life and help you to release negative attitudes and behaviors by bringing balance to your life by promoting harmony, stability and enjoyment.

Looking for Anti Aging tips, facts and products to help you age gracefully and ensure you life your best life? These patterns often emerge with attention deficit disorders, anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and cases of depression and learning disabilities. Such behavioral patterns are created and maintained at deep neuropsychological levels. Neurofeedback EEG is a type of brainwave training that can be used to effect change in these patterns.

In simple terms, EEG neurofeedback therapy is a method to retrain a person's brainwave pattern through the use of sophisticated biofeedback machines. In addition, trained and skilled biofeedback therapists help the client to learn and practice the techniques that will help them to manage and control their brain activity. This is done by showing the patient the displays on the biofeedback equipment, which is what translates the brainwave activity into charts and graphs, and in some instances light and sound feedback.

With neurofeedback EEG training and simple energy control techniques, people have been able to improve their health, sharpen their minds, and improve numerous health conditions, as well as enjoying increased joy and vitality. Biofeedback therapy can also promote high levels of wellness, can improve immune function, can help to reverse certain types of disease and illness, and can support peak performance.

Also called electroencephalographic biofeedback, it makes use of computerized electronic measurement devices, or electrodes, that are placed on the surface of the head in order to monitor brainwave activity. The computer then "feeds back" important information relevant to the activity of the brain and the condition that the person wants to improve.

Neurofeedback EEG electrotherapy can thereby restore homeostasis in the person's system in a relatively short period of time. Many people report that they notice changes after their first treatment. However, for some people it takes repeated biofeedback therapy sessions to detect the desired improvements. In all cases, in order to enjoy lasting changes, the person should expect to go through ten to twenty sessions. This usually provides a sufficient amount of time to properly receive neurofeedback training, under the supervision of a biofeedback therapist, so that eventually they can control and manipulate their brainwave activity, even when there is no biofeedback device available to rely on for the real-time feedback.

Throughout the sessions, information is gathered about the brainwave patterns and also about the efficiency of the communication that is going on between different parts of the brain. This measurement is done as the client sits with eyes open at first while doing one or two cognitive tasks, and then these tasks are repeated with eyes closed. The biofeedback training sessions generally occur one to five times per week, and normally the sessions last for one hour. When training is done less than one hour per week, the client can easily forget what has been learned and has difficulty learning to recognize and control the activity patterns of their brain. This can result in a need for more sessions over a longer period of time.

Training the brain to function at its maximum potential through neurofeedback EEG treatments is quite similar to the way the physical body is trained, toned and maintained. But, instead of training muscles, the brain is being trained through exercises that develop the neural pathways. This in turn allows the brain to function better, in terms of concentration and focus.

We offer a free biofeedback audio gift. Routine activities become so automatic that they are done largely unconsciously (ever get up in the morning and walk to the kitchen before you are really conscious?). This means they require less activity in the brain, and exercise it less.

Therefore, a neurobic activity should do one or more of the following:

1. Involve one or more senses in a new context.

2. Involve your full attention.

3. Break your routine in a significant way.

Neurobics do not have to be complicated. They also don't require that you set aside special times for them. As long as they follow the guidelines above, many simple activities make for good brain exercises, and can be worked into your normal day.

Some Brain Exercises or Neurobics

Learn braille. This is a tough one, but learning to read with your fingers definitely involves one of your senses in a new context.

Do something in a new environment. Go to a new park, or a new store. Travel, by the way, seems to slow age-related mental decline.

Leave the lights off. Get around your home by memory and feel. This certainly fully engages your attention, but be careful of course.

New odors in the morning. Have new odors, like a bottle of mint extract ready to smell first thing in the morning, to "wake up" your brain.

Shower with your eyes closed. Your other senses become more active when you cannot see, and a shower engages several senses.

Brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. This is difficult for some of us, and requires full attention the first time you try it.

Wear different clothes. Ever notice how you feel differently when you wear different clothes. You may think differently as well. Give it a try.

Choose to respond differently. Catch yourself in a normal and mostly unconscious response to a situation, and choose to respond in a different (preferably better) way.

Take a new route to work. It doesn't have to be a longer route - just different. You may even find a faster way to work once you break your routine.

Act confident. In a situation you are unsure about, choose to act confidently. You'll notice that your mind gets very active once you adopt the assumption that you will know what to do.

Learn to distinguish coins using only your sense of touch. This brain exercise can be a way to kill time when waiting for an appointment. If you really want a challenge, see if you can distinguish paper currency denominations by touch.

Of course following the simple guidelines above (involve your full attention, use one or more of your senses in a new context, or break your routine in a significant way) you can invent your own neurobics routine. Have some fun with these brain exercises.

Copyright Steve Gillman. I just have spent most of my life learning from them, to undo the effects of major depression that I've had from childhood. If you suffer from depression, first talk to your medical professional to see what approach is best for you. That is what I've done, but I add to what I've learned by trying a few other things on my own. Don't do anything to yourself that is potentially self-injurious, it pays to research any new technique or approach thoroughly, just to be safe. Whatever works for me may not work for you, we all have our own ways of responding to different treatments. I just know that not all my recovery has come from what was learned at the doctor's office. Being exceptionally strong-willed, my mission has mainly been to boost self-esteem, and fight those inner feelings of sadness that never go away (effects of depression.) Here are some ways that have helped me live a productive and successful life, despite mental challenges.

Six months ago, it was necessary for me to go for physical therapy for a slipped disk in my back. The therapist hooked me up to a small machine called a TENS unit, for one of my treatments. They put small, non-invasive sticky circles (electrodes) on the part of my body needing therapy and then turned the machine on. It felt really good, sort of like a massage. Depending upon how the therapist adjusted the dials, the machine would make knocking or pinging sensations on my back. There are also knobs to adjust the intensity of each sensation. After researching the TENS unit on the internet, I ordered a small one, about the size of a deck of playing cards.

According to what I read about them, TENS machines are not only good for distracting your body into feeling good sensations rather than pain, but they can make your body produce endorphins, or feel-good chemicals, too. This intrigued me, since having depression, I'll take all the feel-good anything I can get (as long as it is both moral and legal.) So, I set up to test this on myself and see if there was any merit to the theory. After years of taking various anti-depressants, some work more than others but none completely take away depression, in my experience. Not being a scientist or doctor, I read up on everything about the TENS machine. There are rules that come along with the machine, like not putting the electrodes on the head, neck or the heart areas. Make sure to follow all of them thoroughly. People with pacemakers should not use TENS units, because it can interfere with the way they work. As with medicines, ask your doctor before using one.

By placing the electrodes along my spine, and setting the TENS settings to the recommended low frequency (pulse) levels. You want low muscle contraction, and to use the TENS for approximately 20 to 40 minutes. If you set it for higher muscle contractions, your muscles may ache later, so I rely on what the experts say, to use it at low settings. For more detailed information, I found these sites helpful:

http://www.bootsmaternityrentalproducts.co.uk/abouttens.php
http://www.medcareservice.com/Pain-Control-Mechanism-Article.cfm

Using the TENS unit has helped my overall mood, it seems, as after using it, my demeanor is calm and relaxed. Though I don't know if this is due to the machine itself or not, but I believe that using it has helped me. Combined with other treatments, this TENS therapy is assisting me (along with other techniques for reducing depression) in making a more enjoyable life. Go ahead and research TENS units online, and see if this is something suitable for you. In my point of view, it is a viable way to help combat depression.

Carolyn McFann is a scientific and nature illustrator, who owns Two Purring Cats Design Studio, which can be seen at: http://www.cafepress.com/twopurringcats . Many of these people are unaware that they have the disorder and it does little damage in their lives. There are others who can feel the effects of the disorder in every aspect of their lives and must seek medical and psychological treatment for this disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a disorder in which the brain does not get the appropriate chemical balances to keep the moods and personality in balance. In this disorder, the brain receives too much of one chemical or not enough of another chemical. This can cause mood swings and behavioral changes that can be difficult for one to understand, let alone those who are not afflicted with the disorder.

While it is possible for individuals to develop bipolar disorder at any stage of their lives, it is most common to see it develop in the early teens to the early twenties of a person's life. There are cases in which young children, as young as five or six, have been diagnosed with the disorder. There are also cases in which the disorder is diagnosed as one comes closer to old age.

Treatment for the disorder varies by the strength of the symptoms and by the frequency of the mood shifts. There are people who have mood shifts on a regular basis, and these shifts can be stretched out for months. Then there are others who have mood shifts at a moment's notice and have no control over the speed or the severity of the shift. Most of the time, the treatment is a mood stabilizer coupled with anti depressants if the individual is in a downward shift.

Most individuals who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder are those who experience sudden and violent shifts in mood or behavior. These individuals can be a danger to themselves or others if not properly treated and can have a very difficult time in work or school. This is the most extreme presentation of the disorder. Other presentations include people who experience highs and then level out or those who experience lows and a leveling or a low-high rotation. These individuals are often left undiagnosed and are not typically a danger to themselves or others due to the predictability of the shifts.

Hi, I'm Romain Levesque Author of the article and owner of the website http://www.details4life.com
Thanks for reading from Tools For Wellness

That there was an easily learnable way for people to lessen long-term chronic pain, even if it's been hanging around for decades? Does it sound too good to be true? Would you believe me if I told you that you can even learn how to do it for free? Well, it's true. I invite you to check it out for yourself. There really is a host of excellent material that can be downloaded for free, as well as an extensive series of articles that tell people in great detail how to use this process. These articles are also available for no charge except the time to read and apply them.

What I am speaking of is Emotional Freedom Techniques, known as EFT. Gary Craig is the person who has made EFT popular. He was trained as an engineer at Stanford, and is also a minister. He has been interested in alternative healing methods for most of his life. Gary discovered these techniques and has made it his life's work, after retiring, to let the whole world know about EFT. He has done an excellent job of getting the word out. His international newsletter, EFT Insights Newsletter, is published twice a week and is sent to 300,000 subscribers all over the world.

So, what is EFT? Well, it is much harder for me to describe than it is for me to show you. Perhaps that's because I am a kinesthetic kind of person. Are you familiar with acupuncture - the ancient Chinese medical practice of gently inserting fine needles into the energy meridians of the body? The needles are used to break up energy blockages, which are thought to cause physical as well as emotional dis-ease. EFT is a form of acupressure, and also uses touch on the meridians. In the case of EFT you tap with your fingertips on the meridians. So, in some ways, it really isn't so new. Acupuncture has been practiced in China for thousands of years. However, EFT is different than acupressure in that emotions are part of the equation. While a person taps on specific points, which are easy to learn, they say words that are accepting of the emotions that they, on some level, may have been avoiding. They work on moving the energy that has been stuck in their body's energy system.

Gary Craig suggests trying EFT on everything. So, thousands of people all over the world are doing just that--trying it on everything. I have experienced amazing success using EFT with migraine headaches, prostate pain, chronic pain, stress, poison oak, and the pain from a hornet sting, to name just a few. EFT is especially good with post traumatic syndrome. There are health care workers who travel to places that have been devastated by tsunamis, hurricanes, and war, and who have used EFT to help countless people.

Besides working on pain and other issues that no longer serve us, EFT can also help us get what we do want. I used to write a newspaper column about using affirmations called Minders. I wish that I had known about EFT back in those days. I would have used it for those times when affirmations weren't enough, when the stories and conditioning that we have been lost in get in the way of creating what we want. That's right, you can tap away those old, limiting beliefs that keep you from creating what you want in life, whether it's to perform better get a better job or create the relationship of your dreams.

EFT can be used with the Law of Attaction to focus on what you want instead of what you don't want. When negative beliefs or feelings get in the way of you achieving what you want, you tap them away with EFT.

So, if EFT is so great why isn't it more well known? That is a reason that I am writing this article--to help make it better known. It is easy to learn. It is portable. You can learn how to do it now.

JoAnn SkyWatcher is an energy healer. She uses Spiritual Mind Treatment, Visualization, Breath, and Emotional Freedom Technique. This holistic healthcare approach is also commonly referred to as neurotherapy and has been used in the treatment of various physical, emotional and mental conditions.

It has been known to effectively reduce the symptoms of ADD and ADHD, as well as chronic pain conditions. Many call biofeedback treatment a true godsend because of its effectiveness with their issues.

EEG biofeedback therapy is understood to support the improved formation of the essential communication pathways in the brain. Neurofeedback therapy has also repeatedly demonstrated that it can help patients to more effectively live with a variety of emotional problems and conditions, as well as addressing many physical ailments. Best of all, it is able to provide this relief to people without pain, without invasive procedures, and without the need to take costly and possibly harmful pharmaceuticals.

The treatment that is known as EEG biofeedback is actually one specific type of the more general treatment modality known as "biofeedback." Biofeedback therapies, in general, have been around for about 40 years and have primarily been used to assist in relaxation and for conditions related to stress and to muscle impairments.

All of the forms of biofeedback provide "feed back" information to the subject, in terms of the small, internal changes in their biological processes. EEG biofeedback is currently being practiced on a daily basis in a wide array of psychological and medical practices around the world.

The demand for biofeedback treatment is undergoing rapid growth, and there is also an increasingly greater scope of issues it is being used to address. While there still are many skeptics of neurotherapy, the fact is that the demand is increasing. It is highly unlikely the demand would be so high if there were no real and measurable benefits.

EEG biofeedback is an effective way to train the brain to be more efficient in its patterns and control of physiological functions. Neurofeedback therapy has also shown people the power of the mind-body connection and helps them to gain a greater sense of mastery of their bodies through the initial awareness and through the practice that comes with the ongoing neurofeedback training sessions.

EEG biofeedback is considered to be a very promising and complementary intervention that can improve the results of more mainstream types of treatment, and in many cases, can even help people to eliminate the need to take medications. A good biofeedback program can also be used to teach those who are affected by ADD/ADHD to control their brainwaves and bring them into a balanced "normal range," which helps them overcome the challenges of ADD and ADHD.

The functional mechanism that is at the heart of EEG biofeedback provides relief to those with ADD/ADHD by separating specific brainwave patterns and altering them. In general, biofeedback therapists are very positive about the changes they see in their patients and the effectiveness of this modality for retraining brain activity and for reducing symptoms, especially in relieving chronic pain.

We offer a free biofeedback audio gift. A recent report however, has stated that the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) illness could be in the genes.

Scientist say that they have found that patients with (ME) Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS as it is more widely known, shared certain genetic characteristics.

Based on a 1999 study of adults in the United States, CFS is thought to affect approximately 4 per 1,000 adults. For unknown reasons, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome occurs more often in women, and adults in their 40s and 50s.

Symptoms include extreme exhaustion; sleep disturbances, memory and concentration difficulties, sore throat and headaches and muscle and joint pains. In many extreme cases it can leave the sufferer bed ridden

The exact cause of CFS is still unknown, although there are several theories. Some people claim that, those pre-disposed to the condition, develop it when triggered by a bacterial illness, Others think that a viral infection, such as glandular fever, can trigger the condition.

Tiredness is normal after a viral infection, but this does not explain why symptoms continue and get worse Because the disease's symptoms are so similar to flue and vary between patients, doctors are only able to diagnose it after ruling out every other possible cause.

It is more likely that CFS is caused by a combination of physical and psychological factors, which also affect how severe the condition is and how long it lasts.

Although widely acknowledged as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). An official title for the illness has still not been confirmed, due to various schools of thought and the lack of evidence from numerous clinical, research and patient communities, regarding its defining symptoms and causes.

Many Doctors still cannot agree if it is a central nervous system, metabolic, (post-) infectious, immune system, or neuropsychiatric disorder, nor even if it is a single homogenous disorder (with a range of possible clinical presentations), or several distinct disorders having many clinical characteristics in common

However, researchers in the Europe claim they have now discovered 88 genetic differences between Cronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)sufferers. This had allowed them to divide patients into several types, according to the severity of thesymptoms.

This could mean that blood tests could soon be developed to help diagnose the Chronic Fatigue Syndromemore easily.

An American study claimed that weekly injections of immune adjuvant, which regulates the way the immunesystem works could help reduce the symptoms for many suffers of chronic fatigue syndrome

According to the World Health Organisation, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a neurological condition that affects the central nervous system within the brain, and had finally been recognised as a debilitating condition since 2002 and treatments are almost exclusively based on the psychological aspects of the illness.

In 2005 a study found that the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome were often exacerbated by the psychological ones. While some improvement may occur with medical care and additional therapies of pacing, cognitive behavioural therapy and graded exercise therapy. However, other patient organisations surveys have also reported adverse effects

So are we any of the wiser. Have any of the arguments or research or surveys proven that the debilitating illness,Chronic fatigue Syndrome is in the Genes or in the mind? I rest my case.

Author: Brian J Worley
From initial diagnosis, it took Brian five years to regain a normal life style. However, he accepts that recovery may not be absolute, as there is always the possibility of something triggering the condition again in the future.

If you would like more information on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Go To http://www.go-to1.com/cfs

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Brian_Worley
Thanks for reading from Tools For Wellness

The word itself means vortex. The vortex being referred to is the energy centers within our body. There are seven main chakras; as well as many minor chakras. Here we are only going to discuss the major chakras. They line up from the base of your spine to the top of your head. Each chakra deals with specific physical aspects of a person's body as well as specific aspects of a person's character and personality. When working with chakra's in meditation you will need to learn to focus on specific chakra energy that will be used for healing or just a sense of calmness. Each chakra is found in a different part of the body.

The Crown

The crown is located the top of your head and is the energy closest to your brain and nervous system. Subconsciously this is the area that relates to perceptions. The crown is purple and is your spirit and spunk.

Brow

The brow is located on your forehead is works with the temples and forehead using energy for your own inner spirit. The brow is indigo in color and is also related to your higher consciousness.

Throat

The throat chakra is located at the base of your throat and works with the throat, neck, arms, and hands. It relates to how we hear things and how we express them. It is our intuition chakra. The throat chakra is represented by a sky blue.

Heart

The heart chakra is located at the center of your chest and involves both the heart and the circulatory system. This gives us our sense of touch and emotion. How we believe what love is. The heart chakra is associated with green. This is the main chakra dealing with healing.

Solar Plexus

This is not only your solar plexus, but your muscle, skin, organs like the pancreas. It is your eyesight of who you truly are and your ego. The Solar plexus is yellow and also works with your ability to learn.

Orange or Spleen

The orange chakra is found in the center of a person's abdomen including the sex organs but the reproductive system as well. It also controls our sense of taste and intimate feelings and our sexual feelings. The color is orange; many will refer to this as the spleen chakra and is right below your navel.

Root

The root chakra is located in the perineum area and is associated with teeth, bones, and the lymph system as well as the lower extremities of the body. It is related to the way we smell things and how secure and trusting we are. The root chakra is associated with red.

There are as many thoughts on how the chakras should be cleansed and re aligned as there are people. The best advise and meditation that I received in training was to cleanse my own chakras every morning in the shower. Taking a few minutes while the cleansing action of water is cleaning the outward to concentrate on each of the chakra centers, always starting with the 7th chakra (the crown) and working down to the first chakra (the root) mediating for a few moments as fingers touch upon the chakra energy center. This simple action tends to keep my own chakras aligned and cleansed to start each day fresh.

If your own chakra's are aligned, you will begin to feel as you practice the shower meditation, that they is a straight line with no tension around it that connects the chakra's together to allow the energy to flow through you. As with any self healing or meditation, it takes practice and repetitive action before anyone will feel the benefits of daily chakra cleansing and aligning.

Ashira Goddard is an Ordained Pagan Minister, author, novelist, free lance writer, columnist, motivational speaker, and activist.
http://www.ashira.ws
ashira@ashira.ws
http://ashiraasks.blogspot.com/
FFWA Member
FWA Member

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Ashira_Goddard
Thanks for reading from Tools For Wellness

Sure, there might be a study or two pondering its potential, but for the most part 'traditional' physicians tend to favor treating health problems with drugs or surgery.

Things are different in China, where holistic treatments have been applied for over 3,000 years. Even today, holistic medicine still holds great importance. Perhaps this is why there are fewer incidents of cancer in China, especially among rural residents who may not have as much access to Western medical technology.

With that being said, why hasn't the West begun to see the value in holistic approaches? Well, first of all there's the issue of money. Hospitals, doctors and drug companies get more money when patients have to keep relying on them for prescriptions or surgeries. If they switched to a model based on holistic healing, it could cut into their profits.

There's also the issue of the individual, who may not think holistic healing is 'scientific' enough to treat them. Yet, once a person sees how holistic medicine works, they will realize that it is just as scientific as any other medical approach used in the Western world.

To get a better understanding, you need to look at the main systems involved in most holistic treatments. They are explained in greater detail below.

1. The Nervous System

The nervous system helps controls all of the body's functioning through a system of impulses. With traditional medicine, if the nervous system is to be fixed, it is through different drugs. Holistic medicine heals the nervous system by revitalizing various pressure points.

2. Meridian System

The Meridian system is not focused on in Western medicine. It is provides pathways for the body's energy flow. Holistic medicine ensures the meridians don't become blocked.

3. The Chemical System

The chemical system controls the body through hormones and other substances. Holistic medicine keeps this system in order through herbs, vitamins and proper nutrition. Traditional medicine tries to fix the chemical system by artificially replacing the hormones. This approach is not as healthy because it doesn't encourage the body to solve the problem on its own, naturally.

4. The Structural System

Muscles encompass the structural system in holistic medicine. They must be in shape to make sure everything the body's joints stay healthy.

Dr. Edrich is the owner of Holistic Health Solutions, a clinic that specializes in treating medical problems without drugs or surgery. The center also gives free seminars on holistic treatments. I have often seen kids in my son's class using weighted lap pads, weighted shoulder bags and even weighted vests. These products are designed to provide proprioception (deep pressure) to the student to help them pay attention. For many kids this type of therapy product helps them stay calm and focused by stimulating their muscles and joints though deep pressure.

Although it makes perfect sense and I have seen it work for some kids I have often wondered if there was any research on the efficacy of these products and which ones work best. The article on ScienceDaily.com discussed a new "deep-pressure" vest that has been developed by Brian Mullen at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. According to the article, Mullen and his associates conducted 8 clinical research studies to test the safety and effectiveness of using existing weighted blankets and vests. He used the data from these studies to design a prototype system that can apply Deep Pressure via a unit that can be inserted into any commercial vest or jacket that has a lining. This makes it easier to carry around and ensures the student using the system will not stick out based on the need for deep pressure in the classroom. The initial testing of the prototype was done on adults who do not have autism so the verdict is still out on his success but the adults in the trial did prefer the prototype vest. This new vest applies pressure which feels like a firm hug or swaddling instead of just weight on the shoulders or lap.

Although Mullen's new product is not yet available it signals new hope for kids with Autism and ADHD. Personally, I have found it very difficult to find weighted products that can be shipped in any type of timely manner or delivered on a consistent basis. I have contacted a several vendors about carrying them in our store but all the companies I have found work on a small scale so availability is limited and inconsistent. Most of the mom's I meet who use these with their kids have made their own or gone to a local seamstress because they were so frustrated in trying to find a resource that was able to deliver product in a timely manner (or at all). Mullen has created a company called Therapeutic Systems to market his product so we look forward the vest being further developed. His invention will fill a void in the marketplace and help special needs kids stay focused so they can learn and keep up with their peers.

Alycia Shapiro is Vice President in charge of product development for SensoryEdge. She has advocated for special needs children in order to get the therapy services they need. As the world we live in becomes smaller, faster and more demanding the simple joys of life become more precious and fleeting. Most of us cope, and get past each situation as it comes our way. For some, the stresses and demands build up and become so large we begin to wobble under their sheer weight. When our coping resources can't manage anymore, we feel acute stress and anxiety. If left unacknowledged, a host of problems come along. These may take a toll on our health, or lead to behaviors that are risky and even life-limiting.

We face stressful circumstances on a regular basis. For some this is a daily occurrence. Stress may come in the form of change, such as beginning school or bringing a new baby into the home. We might also feel stress for physical reasons, such as menstruation, or having sleeping on a lumpy mattress. We face stress at work - perhaps due to factors such as a noisy work environment, impending deadlines or crowded trains to and from the office. Then there is stress located in the social world - for example, how a person feels on a first date, or when we feel anxious making interesting conversation at a party. Even seemingly harmless situations may cause stress, such as vacations, a change in sleeping or diet, and family get-togethers.

Stress has been implicated in a wide range of illnesses, from physical disease to behavioral, emotional and cognitive problems.

Stress changes our behavior

Increases in alcohol, smoking and caffeine use are amongst the most common responses to stress. Stress can often lead to overeating and weight gain. It's always difficult to make causal statements in this area - for example, does stress cause these changes in our behaviour, or does the research just highlight people who behave in unhealthy ways, and in so doing experience stress (or are in some way more predisposed to it) ? Whatever the link, there is certainly an association. If we rely on personal experience rather than science, we know for ourselves that when we are most stressed and anxious, we reach for things that either dampen our stress or give us some degree of comfort. Unfortunately, cream cakes or an extra pint give only temporary relief - the problems that are causing our stress will still remain after we have indulged in these ways, and we may be less empowered or alert to meet the challenges before us.

Stress makes us emotionally unwell

Sustained stress has been linked to depression. It can affect our ability to sleep, or feel rested when we wake in the morning. We may begin to lose enjoyment in the hobbies and interests we once enjoyed. We may start to feel at odds with our partner or children, because minor disagreements begin to feel like major battles. Feeling sluggish, distant and anxious has to take it's toll on our mood state eventually - after all, who likes to feel this way ?

Daily hassles (such as traffic jams or household chores) have a more dramatic effect on someone who is already feeling stressed. This becomes a self-perpetuating cycle of irritability and frustration - rather than reducing stress or making us feel better, this cycle just creates more problems. In so doing, a deeper depression and hopelessness can begin to set in.

Stress makes us physically sick

It's known that victims of heart attack have been found to report higher numbers of stressful incidents in the 6 months prior to the attack, than their healthy counterparts. Increases in occupational stress (e.g. as a result of increases in work load, responsibility or job dissatisfaction) have been linked to an increased incidence of coronary heart disease. Furthermore, longitudinal studies have shown that the level of self-reported stress levels are a good predictor of coronary heart disease in the future.

How might stress have such a link with heart disease ? One explanation lies in the finding that high levels of stress seem to cause excessive arousal of the Endocrine system, and lead to Atherosclerosis (a narrowing of the arteries). This stress response increases blood pressure, and causes Hypertension. Together, atherosclerosis and hypertension are the most common cause of heart failure. If we accept that stress can also increase our caffeine intake and smoking behaviour, we know that such a lifestyle is not good for the heart.

There is even some evidence to suggest that more stressful lifestyles precede the development of cancer. Studies have measured stress levels in initially healthy individuals, and over a long period of time, those reporting greater stress in their life have been more likely candidates for the development of cancer. Again, the explanation may lie in the physiological response to stress, or the unhealthy lifestyle that chronic stress can create and maintain. From a physiological point of view, the mechanisms thought to be at work once again involve excessive arousal of the Endocrine system. This is thought to have a depressive effect on the immune response, which has in turn been associated with conditions such as breast cancer.

In recent studies, measures of psychological state and social problems (psychosocial data) have been considered accurate predictors of mortality and cause of death over 14 years ahead ! More highly stressed individuals are thought to have upto a 40% higher death rate than their lower stressed counterparts. The idea that stress will lead to an early grave is not to be taken lightly.

It's all in the mind ?

All individuals face potentially stressful experiences during their lives. However, the impact of similar stressors does not have a similar effect upon all individuals. Some people have terrible lives - they face deprivation and abuse, but somehow manage to survive and lead outwardly fulfilling lives. Others have relatively more comforts and support networks, and no obvious reason to become depressed or chronically ill on account of their circumstances. Furthermore, in the same situation, two individuals do not necessarily experience the same stress. It would seem therefore that to some extent, stress is 'all in the mind'.

Research suggests that an enhanced 'hardiness' of character of an individual is the changing factor. This hardiness may take the form of a stronger commitment to self, an attitude of vigorousness toward the environment, and a belief that 'I am in control' of the events in my experience (psychologically termed a sense of self-efficacy and self-esteem).

If we have a certain mind-set or approach to life, we are more likely to become stressed over relatively small incidents and events. This mind-set is characterized by the tendency to compete heavily with others, or take a self-critical stance. It manifests in the form of racing against time and others, and becoming easily aroused or angered. It's an attitude that tells us we are not good enough, and need to be better than others to be happy or successful. It's a way of thinking that leads us to overlook or be dissatisfied with what we have, and yearn for that which is yet to be acquired. It is a case of constantly living in negative equity, and being burdened with emotional debt. When small storms come our way, this mind-set easily throws us off-balance, and we feel stress in all it's forms.

How to manage stress

Certain events, situations and circumstances are inherently stress provoking, but the internal resources of an individual can help.

The stress response is a balance between our perception of a demanding situation and our perceived ability to cope with it. If we appraise stressful situations to be within our resources to cope, we are less likely to feel stress. This points towards a strong sense of self-belief and self-esteem. It also suggests a positive attitude to life. But how do we develop this ?

Of course, our childhood is very important in this regard. The messages we have heard repeated by our parents, peers and teachers over the years easily become our own internal narrative or story. What others think of us, becomes our own thinking about ourselves. Loving, empowering and accepting messages help us feel good about ourselves, and by extension about our abilities and skills. Such positive experiences of growing up help us to take greater risks, and in so doing we develop greater confidence. A positive developmental cycle is created and maintained. Unfortunately, not all of us are lucky enough to have such good upbringings. At worst, we are constantly criticized, to the extent that we develop an internal bully, who keeps criticising us long after these negative messages were first received.

If stress seems to be a recurrent problem for you, and it is having a negative effect on your enjoyment of life and physical health, you may need to seek help. Here are some ideas for you to consider;

1. In cases of financial stress or debt problems, do not bury your head in the sand ! Talk to your bank early, and anyone else that has loaned you money, and expects regular repayments. This would include companies expecting you to pay utility bills. You may benefit from seeing a debt counselor, through organizations like the Citizen's Advice Bureau, who can lead you through this process.

2. It can also be helpful to talk with people you trust about aspects of your life that are creating the most unhappiness for you, financially or otherwise. For example, you may be struggling with an unfulfilling or neglectful relationship with your partner, which needs to change. Perhaps your work-play balance is way off the mark, taking the zest out of you. You may need to be encouraged by someone dear to you, to make some changes. Sometimes, a listening ear can be enough to help you bring personal problems into focus, and then feel encouraged to work on them.

3. Regular and planned vacations can be a release, but you need to guard against this becoming a form of escapism from troubles - are you running away from problems that need you to be more present in order to resolve them ? On the other hand, are you making a planned decision to recuperate and relax, with the intention of finding solutions when you return ? It can be expensive to plan big holidays, so you may wish to consider small breaks, more often. A long weekend once every a month can be great, even if it's just spending time pottering around at home or in the garden.

4. Regular exercise and changes in the usual routine are also good antidotes for stress. Try a new class at your local gym or community center - perhaps some yoga, pilates or tai-chi. Alternatively, try joining a club which involves doing things that you were once interested in, but have fallen by the wayside as you have become busier. Evening classes can also be a good change from the norm, but do guard against taking on more work !

5. For some people, there is support to be found in religion or spirituality. Visiting the local church, temple or synagogue can be a very easy and welcoming way to build a new support network, and develop a fresh attitude to life and living. Faith can build hope and perseverance, especially at times of hopelessness and despair.

6. Highstreet shops and health stores stock a range of relaxation and meditation tapes, which can be played before you sleep at night or whilst you take a slow bath. Techniques such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Self-Hypnosis training can be accessed through such audio recordings, with good results.

7. Alternatively, you may wish to pick up a book from your local library or bookshop, on matters of time management, organizational skills or developing a more positive attitude. There are volumes of very interesting and engaging books on these topics, available for you to access. If you don't have time to read, why not pick up an audio tape ? Sue Jefferson's 'Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway' is a good starting point.

8. In more pronounced cases of stress, it may be advisable to consult your GP. He or she may offer professional advice on matters of diet, lifestyle and health related consequences of chronic stress. A sick note might give you some respite from work, and an opportunity to gather your resources before making changes. A visit to the GP may also form the beginning of a more specialist assessment for anxiety or depression. Most GP surgeries employ counselors on site, so that talking therapy can be accessed without a long waiting time.

9. In more severe cases of stress, a referral to the local mental health service may be warranted. This can lead to a range of specialized talking therapies (and medication if required), to problem solve the stressful situations in your life. At a more fundamental level, psychotherapy can get individuals in touch with how they approach life, and why this might be so. It can help them relearn more helpful messages and self-narratives, so that self-esteem and self-efficacy can be enhanced. By building such internal resources, you are more likely to be able to cope with difficult circumstances now and in the future, so this can be a long lasting solution to stress related problems.

10. If things feel hopeless, don't try to cope alone. The Samaritans run 24 hour helplines, and can guide you through how you feel. Chronic stress is usually a sign that something is not right in your life, and you could see it as an opportunity for important changes to be made.

Dr Bobby Sura
Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Systemic and Family Therapist
http://www.clinicalpsychologydirect.com
Thanks for reading from Tools For Wellness

In addition to gaining in-depth knowledge in the history and philosophies of TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), students participating in Oriental medicine courses have a variety of professional pathways from which to choose.

Were you aware that programs in Chinese medicine offer training in Oriental bodywork like Tuina, acupressure, and Shiatsu? Additionally, you can opt to enroll in a doctoral program; where you gain essential skills and knowledge in the Five Elements, acupuncture, needling techniques, Chinese medical language, meridian therapy, Qigong, Tai chi, Chinese herbology, and Chinese medical massage, and other related studies.

Depending on which one of the programs in Chinese medicine you wish to pursue, it is always a good idea to explore your options and what types of prerequisites may be necessary for enrollment. For more comprehensive coursework, (like doctoral programs) you must have an extensive educational background in basic sciences like anatomy, physiology, pathology, chemistry and biochemistry, among others. And while certificate programs like Tuina or acupressure may be completed in less than one year, graduate programs in acupuncture and Oriental medicine may take up to four years to finish.

Because the demand for alternative and natural healing medicines are growing, professional prospects for those who have completed programs in Chinese medicine are good. Along with blood pressure, it measures skin temperatures, breathing rate, heart rate, perspiration, brain activity, muscle tension. All of these are involuntary body functions, and biofeedback machines allow you to measure them, focus on them and change them.

This can have profound effects on conditions such as high blood pressure, migraine headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and back pain to name just a few.

Biofeedback devices are easy to use and are non-invasive. For some, results can come quickly; for others it takes some time to master the technique.

Biofeedback has been around for a long time. Preferably it should not be too dark or brightly lit. Familiar and comfortable surroundings help. The basic idea being that you should have time to yourself without any distractions.

Sitting Position:

I am not going to use any unfamiliar words like padma asana, lotus or half lotus positions to keep it simple for you. But there are a few things I am going to stress upon and you should try to follow them to the best of your ability. Remember there are no hard or fast rules regarding place or posture.

Make it a habit to do the seven point check with your body when you begin your meditation.

1. Sitting position with legs crossed is preferable. It locks your body in a position and you don't have to bother to keep your balance while you are focusing on meditating. You can use a cushion if you find it difficult to sit on flat surface. If you can not sit in a cross legged position you can sit on a chair with both feet about one foot apart.

2. Put both your hands with palms facing up in your lap. Put the right hand over the left hand so that index finger of right hand touches the base of left thumb and the fingers of left hand touch the knuckles of right hand. Do not keep your arms pressed by your sides. Keep your elbows facing outward so that there is slight space for air to pass under your arm pits. This will help you to stay awake and avoid drowsiness during meditation.

3. Keep your back as straight as possible. This, I might add, is important to keep in mind while meditating. The energy points (chakras) are located along the spine and a straight back helps transmit energy up and down your spine. In the beginning you will have to pay attention to your back many times during a meditation session because we have a tendency to slacken our back or slouch. After doing it many times it will become second nature to you. If you find yourself slouching do not be disheartened just straighten up. Some times using a cushion/pillow to support your back is a good idea. But do not lean too heavily on the pillow as it might make you drowsy. Gradually you will learn to keep your back straight without any support. I still use a pillow to support my back many times if I am too tired to sit without a support. Whether you are meditating on a chair or sitting cross legged try and keep your spine straight like an arrow.

4. Pull your shoulders slightly back without straining. This will open and thrust your chest slightly forward as one seems ready to receive or face something.

5. For the neck I use two different positions and both are equally helpful. First keep your neck straight in line with your back as if it is an extension of your spine. Look at any object at eye level opposite you. Your gaze will be parallel to the ground. In the second neck positions tilt your head very slightly forward so that your eyes are looking at a point about 6-7 feet in front of you at the level of your thighs.

6. Your lips should be relaxed and touching slightly. The tip of the tongue touches the roof of your mouth (oral cavity) just behind your upper teeth. This helps to keep the saliva inside.

7. In the beginning I would suggest that you do not close your eyes completely. Meditation can be so relaxing that you might fall asleep. Keep your eye lids slightly open so as to let in the light. Your eyes should be looking at a spot about 7 feet away but without any specific focus. As you will progress in meditation technique your eyes will intuitively open and close according to need.

This is the basic sitting posture for meditation. There can be minor variations according individual's needs. Do not strain yourself. As your experience with meditating grows you can experiment with various meditation postures. The idea is to be relaxed but attentive.

http://basic-meditation.blogspot.com
Thanks for reading from Tools For Wellness
