Margaret Hamilton (the witch) was injured in the scene where the Wicked Witch of the West departs Munchkinland in a huff after Dorothy arrives. She was standing on a trap door and was supposed to disappear down into it quickly when the smoke (followed by fire) puffed up, but during the second take of that scene, the fire came too early and her costume started burning. She suffered second and third degree burns and was unable to work for a month. When she came back, she refused to do any more work with fire.

Toto was played by a Cairn Terrier creatively named Terry. Because of her previous experience (she was “Rags” in Shirley Temple’s Bright Eyes) Terry got $125 a week for her efforts, which was more than twice what the actors playing the Munchkins got ($50/week). She got her foot broken during filming when an actor playing one of the guards stepped on her.

Margaret Hamilton wasn’t the first choice for the Wicked Witch. The iconic role almost went to Gale Sondergaard, who was very pretty and balked at the makeup job that would make her the ugly witch. Maggie Hamilton, however, was used to playing plain-Jane roles and had in fact based her career around it. You’re probably so used to the green makeup job that some of her other roles may be totally unfamiliar to you, even if you’ve seen her in them – she was Morticia’s mom in The Addams Family TV show, she portrayed a maid on As the World Turns in the early ‘70s, and played Cora the Maxwell House coffee lady in commercials in the ‘70s as well.

Margaret Hamilton’s son said she loved her “I’ll get you my pretty…” line so much, she used it in her personal life on a somewhat frequent basis, just for fun.

The date on the Wicked Witch of the East’s death certificate is actually the date of L. Frank Baum’s death. The 19th anniversary of his death, to be exact. We can’t read it, but this is what the Death Certificate says:

Shirley Temple As Dorothy? Although producer Mervyn LeRoy had always had Judy Garland in mind for the role, he was being pressured to “borrow” Shirley Temple from Fox. She was only 10 and Judy was 16 at the time; studio executives thought 10 was a much more appropriate age for this particular role. They ended up auditioning Shirley just to say they had, but in the end it didn’t matter anyway: Fox refused to loan her out.

The Horse of a Different Color was created by putting Jell-O paste onto a white horse. It was difficult to keep the horse from licking the paste, so the scene had to be shot quickly. If you look closely, you can see the driver of the buggy subtly restraining the horse from licking himself.

Originally, a scene with an insect called the Jitterbug was shot. It involved a dance sequence with our heroes but was ultimately cut due to time constraints. But you can still hear a reference to the scene in the movie when the Wicked Witch of the West sends the flying monkeys after the gang. She says,

“Take your army to the Haunted Forest, and bring me that girl and her dog. Do as you like with the others, but I want her alive and unharmed! They’ll give you no trouble. I promise you that. I’ve sent a little insect on ahead to take the fight out of them. Take special care of those ruby slippers. I want those most of all. Now fly!”

In the book, Glinda is the Good Witch of the South, not the North. The two Good Witches were combined into one character for time’s sake in the film. She is, however, restored to her proper direction in The Wiz.
Dorothy’s slippers were silver in the book. They were changed to the famous ruby red version for film to take full advantage of the new Technicolor technology. There are many authentic versions of the ruby slippers – some counts say at least seven. Among those, one pair is housed at the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian, Debbie Reynolds owns a never-used pair with curled toes, and one pair was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Bert Lahr, AKA the Cowardly Lion, was the first to use the phrase “Heavens to Murgatroyd!” that Snagglepuss later became famous for. Snagglepuss’ voice was based on Lahr’s. His son, John Lahr, is the senior drama critic at The New Yorker.

As most people know, the Tin Man was originally supposed to be played by Buddy Ebsen, but when Ebsen discovered he was severely allergic to the Tin Man’s makeup job, he was forced to drop the role. Jack Haley replaced him, using a voice that he used to tell his son bedtime stories. Somewhat strangely, Jack Haley, Jr., was married to Liza Minelli for about five years in the ‘70s.

The classic “Over the Rainbow” almost didn’t make it into the film. Studio heads thought the black-and-white beginning was too long and wouldn’t entertain kids like the Technicolor part would, and they also thought it wasn’t appropriate to make Judy Garland sing in a barnyard.

This one sounds like a total urban legend, but Snopes says it’s true. The costume designers were looking for a very fancy coat for Professor Marvel – the Wizard’s Kansas counterpart – but one that had gotten quite shabby. Some of the crew went to a secondhand shop and bought a bunch of coats to go through; Frank Morgan (the actor who played the Wizard), the director and the wardrobe people selected one out of the bunch that seemed perfect. It had a velvet collar but the nap was worn off of the velvet and it was looking a little worse for the wear. It even fit Morgan just right. Morgan was wearing the coat one afternoon and discovered a label that said “L. Frank Baum.” The coat had originally been made for Baum in Chicago – the tailor verified it, and Baum’s widow did as well. She was given the coat after the movie wrapped.

Around 3000 B.C. (middle Neolithic) the semi nomadic peoples that populated the Salisbury Plain began to build Stonehenge as the center of a ceremonial site. We know almost nothing about who built it. A popular theory attributed it to the Druids but modern dating shows it to be at least a 1000 years before the Druids came to power.

Stonehenge was built as an astronomical calendar aligned with lunar and solar events such as the summer solstice where the sun rises directly over the Heel Stone and the first rays shine into the center of the monument between the open arms of the horseshoe arrangements. Built in three phases between 2950 B.C. and 1600 B.C., the original construction was a circular ditch and mound with 56 holes forming a ring. The first stone placed at the site was the Heel stone erected outside of the entrance to the site. 200 years later 80 blocks of bluestone were erected forming two concentric circles. At some point this construction was dismantled and the final phase of the site begun. The bluestones were moved within the circle and the gigantic stones and lintels that give Stonehenge its distinctive look were installed. Some of these stones weigh 26 tons. It remains a mystery how such huge stones were moved from the quarry by a supposedly primitive people.

How to Play Santa at Christmas

Anybody with a heart can be Santa Claus, because Santa is the embodiment of the good and love that's in all of us. Just the sight of Santa's red suit and white beard delights children and warms adults. Playing Santa can be one of the more rewarding experiences a person can have, and it's easy to do! Anyone can be Santa.

The Office Party Santa
Playing Santa for adults can be a lot of fun. Grownups expect a Santa that's bold. You're already the center of attention so really let loose with those "Ho-ho-ho's"! Santa makes people think of when they were children, so don't be afraid to call a grown man a "little fella", even if he's your boss!

Santa with Little Children
Little children love Santa. They love him so much it scares them! Expect many of your little visitors to be timid around Santa and adjust your tone. Let your "ho-ho-ho's" be more of a chuckle than a shout. Speak softly with little children. Deep voices can intimidate some children so go easy on the bellowing Santa voice.

Sometimes parents want to plop their little one in Santa's lap and step back to watch. That's not always the best idea. Children can become scared if they think their parents have abandoned them with a stranger so it may work best if they stick around. If they're trying to have their child's picture taken with Santa, it can be kind of nice to have Momma or Daddy in the picture too.

Everyone expects Santa to ask children what they want for Christmas. Usually the child responds with a list of stuff you've never heard of. Take the time to check out the toy ads in the newspaper so you can be at least a little familiar with what they're talking about.

Sometimes children can be so overwhelmed by the experience that they can forget the list of stuff they've been bugging their parents about for weeks. You can prompt their memory a little by asking if they want simple things like a ball or a toy car or a doll.

Don't ask nervous children if they've been good or bad. Around Christmas, the pressure is really on for them to be good and they know it! Besides, they've been told you know already. Instead ask if they love Christmas, or say "I bet you've been good".

The Santa Suit
Santa's Costume is a big part of your presentation. The ABoyd Company has several really good Santa Suits to choose from in all price ranges. With your Santa Suit there are several things to consider.

Color: Brighter red if you're playing to adults, but darker red if you're playing to children.

Weight: Santa's Costume is designed for the North Pole, but usually you'll be playing Santa indoors and all that heavy material can get really hot!

Most Santa suits don't come with pockets so be sure and wear a T Shirt and shorts underneath so you'll have a place to keep your keys and wallet.

Some of our more fascinating and engaging items are our Woodkits.

They start out as flat sheets of plywood which are then cut into intricate shapes that you fit together sort of like a jigsaw puzzle to create really cool 3-D models.

Woodkits make a great project for adults and kids to work on together. Smaller children might find it difficult to press out the wooden shapes, but with a little help they can handle it easily. Then fit the pieces together and you have a really cool model to show off.

Woodkits don't require any glue, but you can use simple white glue to make your model permanent.

Moebius Model Big Frankie

For years, the "grail kit" for many figure modelers was the original Aurora "Big Frankie" or Gigantic Frankenstein model kit. This was the largest model Aurora ever made and despite being really cool, they didn't sell very well, probably because they were also the most expensive model they ever made.

Originally, Aurora was going to release Big Frankie an animated toy, but as projected production costs climbed, they decided to use their existing molds and release it as a model kit, complementary of their already very successful line of Universal Monster models.

Despite advertising in Famous Monsters magazine, the model never sold very well so fairly soon after they started, Aurora pulled the plug on the kit and it was unavailable for many years.

Lots of people thought that Polar Lights would re-release Big Frankie, but they never did. Still there was a demand for the kit out in the market, so when Moebius Models started re-issuing Aurora Kits, this one was early on their project list.

We're offering Big Frankie at a full ten bucks off the retail price. That's a good deal!

Carnegie Collection Dinosaur Replicas

The Carnegie Collection Dinosaur Toys are some of our most popular items.

I first discovered these about twenty years ago at a national school supply meeting and they are beautiful. They are constructed from semi-rigid vinyl plastic. Designed and sculpted in the USA they are molded and painted by hand in Asia.

The Carnegie Collection figures are really accurate and strive to reflect the best knowledge available from paleontologists. Most of the figures are made in 1:40 scale, but some of them representing smaller dinosaurs are in 1:10 scale.
