"GF2": New Pattern Generator

GF2 is a new pattern generator based on the visualization of a simple computer program. Not the output of the program, but the program itself. It produces a remarkable variety of designs and patterns, of which only a small fraction have been investigated. The full description will be in a forthcoming paper (TBD).

Truchet '45 adaptor'

Remember those adaptors for 45 records so they'd play on 'normal' record players. Ok good, then you'll understand why this is called "45". Do those things have a real name?

Punchouts

This truchet tiling produces odd shaped "punchouts." At higher resolutions, the autocoloring is not as interesting as the just the outline.

Thick Vermicular

Truchet Outlined Curves

More square truchet tilings with a curved or zigzag outline. The versions on the left has a ratio of 50-50, while the right side has 90-10.

Mask Dots

This is the original "dots" where the masking algorithm was discovered/invented. The original motivation was to find a method to "optimally" place disks on the plane. While unsuited for that purpose, they do create a nice dither/halftone pattern and they have some other interesting properties to be revealed later.

The solid colors on the right have the same gray-scale density as the dither pattern on the left.

Crisscross Density Experiments

The crisscross pattern with different densities. The rows get successively sparser (less dense) while the right column is a 4x zoom of the left column.

Hexagonal Truchet Tilings

This is another truchet tiling system but this time the tiles are hexagons containing curved segments. All patterns are made with 1 or 2 different tiles, with a possible random rotation.

Mask Algorithm and Curves

So far, the mask algorithm has produced patterns with sharp angles. However it can produce patterns that contain curves and irregular shapes. the last two swatches contain a slightly different variation.

These pattens are created from a single tile, randomly rotated 0 or 90 degrees. The second pattern has the rotation in a 1:4 ratio, creating a more streamlined result.

Stairstep

Crisscross extends Streamline with perfectly balanced horizontal and vertical line segments.

Streamline

The streamline pattern is a variation of Vermicular2007, where the "solid" space is filled with lines instead of a checkerboard pattern. This seemingly minor change produces a very different effect. Horizontal and vertical variants also have a different feel.
