I did not rush to the TV set to watch this stuff because I know a media hustle when I see it.

Special programing about blacks in this country are almost always flawed with the emphasis put on the negative and stereotypes and generalizations thus doing the exact opposite the shows claim they were trying to do, whether it is healing the community, bring in dialog, teaching, they always screw it up.

The thing for me is what are these shows supposed to accomplish?

Educate?

Change?

Dialog?

Entertain?

I don't see it that way.

By the end of these programs you will be convinced that:

1- We all have exclusively every sexually transmitted disease known to man from birth.

2- Men hate women

3- Women hate men

4- White is the answer for both.

5- Men are born lustful, amoral, criminals.

6- Women are born lustful, amoral, b@#$@#

7- We are incapable of succeeding in the academic arena despite the "credentials", (more like licenses to talk mess in public), of the talking heads recycled for these shows.

8- We were better off in chains cutting cotton and sugar cane in the fields.

And you can add on to that list your self.

Positive images are rare, and made to look like the exception than the norm.

Here is something that tickled me, in this particular series they talk about the lack of black fathers and in the same breath show a single dad raising 3 kids by himself struggling, not as a counter balance mind you but to enforce incompetence in raising kids.

They show a two parent home were a couple puts their 5 kids through college and than talk about paying kids to go to school.

Now I know these show do accomplish one thing, they enforce to the idea to some people who swear these are the norms in our community, you can tell who they are because they start quoting us, Don Imus, Fox News, on and on.

Which enforces my belief that if you have to air your dirty laundry out there for every one to see than the only thing your accomplishing is having people talk about your dirty laundry, your not cleaning anything.

But the hell with it I fell like I wasted time in my life talking about it,

For those that missed it and want to see it.

BTW why do the hosts of these things no matter what color always act like they are going on a safari?

A note on the Independent Woman. (Part 2)

Lets take an another example.

A friend of mine is in relationship with an upwardly mobile woman who owns her own house and and has a great job.

Now I knew her before I knew him and basically hooked them up together.

He was in school, working a dead end job till he got where he wanted to be.

She wanted to get married at the time, he wanted no part of it because he didn't feel like he was on equal footing or had a right to make any decisions at all, I mean she had it all any way, so what can he say?

His insecurity about the relationship forced him to demand more of himself.

She is real old school with it, and believes that "man" should take the "rightful" place as head of the house hold.

Her question of course is he that man?

And he questioned it himself, on if he is that man.

Trying to find his way in life led him to California were he is working on a popular talk show, he now feels comfortable to ask her to marry him and move out there with him.

She says yes, and is going to give up everything in Georgia, including house and career to go out there.

Now for some this is some old Hollywood type wonderful mess.

But for me that doesnt sit right.

Only because I know that this cute little lady was involved with an upwardly mobile man prior to my homeboy, were she wind up engaged.

The dude she was with owned his own house and business, and "demanded"
that she move in with him and sell her house.

She said no, he said F-U, and than next thing you know her mother is trying to calm her down as she stands outside his house with a gallon of gasoline one night trying to decide if she wants to burn him and his place down.

Now here is a man who has it all, but she want to kill him despite the fact that he wanted to make her his wife.

She winds up packing everything up to go out west with a dude who is still trying to get it together, but was unwilling to commit to her because he felt he had no leverage.

What was the difference?

Your guess is as good as mine, but she decided that she was willing to give up independence for one and not the other.

The only thing I can think of is that it came down to ego, and power.

She felt that her ego was bruised with her first love and she recognized that she would have no control in the relationship if she submitted.

With my homeboy she felt that since he was just now coming into his own that she was more comfortable because it was not him making it happen it was "we" making it happen.

Of course he is in love so he does not see it that way and I'll be damn if I point it out.

I want those two knuckle heads to go to the grave together just so I can say I hooked them up.

But in short it comes down to power in a relationship in a society were men are taught to not give it up and women through there new found independence are hell bent, rightly so in many cases, on redefining what it means to be in a relationship.

And this little quote, "Then Ne-Yo releases this beautiful track Miss Independent, and made me realize that being an Independent black woman is NOT a bad thing and that men need to man up and not be intimidated by us."

You know this a very popular view held by a lot of women regarding how men are "intimidated" by a strong woman.

I wouldn't call it intimidation as much as men recognizing that a basic need by women are not being met by some, (that's some), of these women, a need that gets put off as unimportant and or written off as the sign of an insecure man.

That need being "need".

As a fellow that has playing the field for awhile I came across quite a few independent women with mix results.

Some of them was cool, we were just in different stages in our lives that made it impossible to keep a healthy relationship.

Others were completely out of whack.

My conclusion for those, was that I didn't see any purpose for being in the relationship that made sense to me, because my needs were not being met.

I felt I had no purpose in the relationship other than to be called "boyfriend".

They have it all and don't mind telling you, so if that's the case than in my mind the relationship is nothing but a hyped up sex thing an if that's the case, it last only as long as it takes for another woman to come into the picture.

Let us be honest it is in the nature of most men to be the alpha male in their relationship with women to some degree or other.

For some it maybe the old school way of paying for everything and making all the decisions.

For others it's that small feeling of being able to provide for the other in some way, as in paying the bill for something regardless of how small or big.

Others like to be Mr. Fix it, as in fix the car and what ever else is broken in the house or in the woman's personal life in general.

And still other like to be catered to, to a certain degree that ranges from ridiculous to modest.

For me I have no idea, but I know when it's not being met.

Regardless, the need to be needed is built into us, and when a woman doesn't know how to fulfill that need than why would you expect a man to stick around?

There is a reason known gold diggers always have a man, its not because men don't know what she is up to, it's because she is stroking the hell out of his ego by taking care of his needs.

If a man is not fulfilling a woman's need I don't expect her to be happy about it, but to do something about it.

The rise of the independent woman is fairly new in this country, especially with black women, there existence has thrown a monkey wrench in gender roles with one side trying to hold onto the traditional role that is not practical let alone fair in this day in age and the other trying to redefine it but not really understanding what their own role in it is.

The end result is that relationships can turn into power struggles when both sides try to "pull rank" on the other.

Communication goes out the window with both sides pointing fingers at the other.

I remember a woman I was dating a certain woman for a while, who was very in to me until I let her talk me into moving in with her, the relationship went 180, with we an us turning into me and she.

I knew it was over when she went out with her friend, got drunk and slept over at her house, the next day I asked her how come she did not call to let me know she was alright, and I got a speech about how she is a grown woman and this is her house she 'll do what she wants.

Say the f$%# what?

Did that just come out your mouth?

I was out that place in a week.

I take fault for that one because I gave up my independence to her and gave her power over me.

And she promptly abused it.

But that is a small example of what man does not want to hear, was I trying to control her?

Hell half the time I was pushing her out the door to go hang with her friends and giving her money to spend on drinks.

Mean while I am at home watching her kid.

I figure why not change my perspective about relationships a little and take a progressive role in this.

Kill that noise.

My experiment with gender roles went out the window after that.

I bet this only ups the ratings for women's basketball.

I'll Be honest with you I prefer women's college basketball over women's basketball over there pro game.

For some reason the WNBA is putting out in my opinion a very inferior product that gives women's basketball a bad name.

Cant put my finger on why but the college game is so much better.

This league has been on life support for a while now.

With out the NBA paying bills there is no WNBA, sell outs are hard to come by, major market teams do not dominate attention, inability to attract the attention of men who are not related to a player, the whole focus on "girls can play ball too" promo.

It all comes off as desperate, and desperate is never attractive.

But this right here will raise some eye brows, for all the wrong reasons of course in a business were when they stop talking about you, your done.

Now some one is going to point out Rick Mahorn touching Lisa Leslie, unfortunately the view from the camera made it impossible for me to see exactly what happened to her but I doubt he went after her, but the unwritten rule is you go after your own players not the opposing teams.

Pet Peeves: The Active Hater

You know who I cant stand, the active hater.

The active hater is the hater who takes action against you with their hate.

A friend of mine brought to my attention that she was having problems with a group of women at work, I asked what the problem was and she goes on about how they talk about her behind her back, smile in her face, and intentionally disrupt her work, the serious part to me.

That's messing with the money.

She is the sensitive type who has to have every one like her and she must please every one, so this is playing on her mind.

Some real high school ish.

Now women can be catty sometimes especially with each other.......

...so I chalk it up to that and tell her to let it go.

She of course cant, and wants some advice on what to do.

What made her think I could give her advice on this subject that wouldn't involve some type scene is beyond me.

So I keep it simple and answer her by asking her a question.

Why do you give a f^%$?

Your intelligent and educated, which puts you ahead of the curve since most people are one or the other but rarely both.

You are attractive, there are men who are willing to give up a testicle to spend the night with you.

You have your own car, new.

Your own house.

You make serious money in a profession that if you quit tomorrow you would probably wind up with a better paying job the day after.

You have family that cares about you.

You have real friends that are loyal.

You have happiness.

Why are you sweating some back biters?

All you have to do is put some extra twitch in it when you walk away so they know exactly were to kiss you at.

Shrug them off, if it's that serious, tell the broads to step outside one by one and beat the ish out of them.

But why let women who are the definition of the B word stress you out and put you one step closer to the grave?

Tell them F you and move on.

But of course Ms. Nice Lady cant do anything like that.

So she will be back at work miserable trying to please some trolls that she should be slapping around.

I don't have the patience for that type of ish, the hater, some punk smiling in your face but running your name in the mud behind your back and even worse intentionally undermining you.

He or she doesn't like you for what ever reason and not only has to let every one know this but has to throw some major salt in your game.

Fine with me hate away, I am not above hating my self, some people need to be hated on because they only spread hate themselves, but do not try to stop my flow.

That's the type of ish that calls for war.

Stay in your weight class punk.

Apparently the cops like their Negroes on the crispy side.

The idea behind the taser is that it is supposed to keep the cops from using excessive force, of the 41 to 50 bullets to unarmed black men kind.

The argument against giving cops the tasers has always been that it would be quickly abused by law enforcement who would see it as an answer for all types of uncooperative suspects.

Now I like to give the cops hell because......well they deserve it.

But I am not with out understanding, sympathy, or even empathy for the job they have to do in communities that view them more as a problem than a solution.

But that again is their fault, when a poorly trained cop is set loose into community an abuses his authority, than gets protected by a union that fights tooth and nail to have them keep their job, than protected by their fellow officer's code of silence, and than gets off through the judicial system, well you can see why some people like to say F%^#& the police.

The mistrust between the police and some of the communities they are to "protect" and serve in has been bred into society for a while now, and it is in the best interest of both sides to clear up the channel's of communications so that both sides know who they are dealing with and what is acceptable conduct and not.

That way the next dude that catches one will most definitely deserve it as in this dude right here.....

Now this cover "controversy" has been making the rounds on the blogosphere rubbing a lot of people the wrong way.

I have been running my blogo mouth about it so I decided let me officially let you know what I think.

IT IS A JOKE.

It is called satire, the cover was mocking opponents of the Obama's who can not seem to find anything substantial to say about the Dynamic Duo.

And for good reason, watching Fox News, (I needed a good laugh and Fox News is one hell of a joke), one of the talking heads pointed out the Barrack really is almost with out any personality flaws that the jokers of the media like to use when blasting politicians.

Bush is portrayed as a clueless cowboy, Clinton as a sexual deviant, Reagan as a senile old coot.

Obama?

Name it.

The only thing that has been taken to task is the media's love affair with him which the Saturday Night Live skit pointed out.

The only thing we here about on the regular is that Obama is a type of Manchurian candidate for the Islamic extremists, (that's extremist as in not normal, before any one starts broad brushing Muslims), hell bent on taking over the White House.

Than there is his wife Michelle who they have persistently try to portray as the angry black women spitting venom against poor innocent white people.

(side note: Last I checked the "angry black woman" was pissed with every one, in particularly black men, and since Barrack is still calling him self a black man I doubt Michelle qualifies as a angry black woman being that she is married to him)

Back to the subject at hand.

The New Yorker cover was mocking one of the few avenue of attacks that has been taken by the right against the Obama's.

The New Yorker in my opinion went with a joke that flew over a lot of peoples head.

In fact the people who seem do be offended by this are the ones who do not read publications like the New Yorker, and thus not recognize where they are going with this where they have always gone with their satire.

They trow an image up on the cover and instead of telling you what it means they let your mind wonder.

And that of course cause you to draw your own conclusions.

Which depending on your belief, morals and sense of humor, will either have you taking it for face value.

A critique of people who take it for face value.

Or generally get you thinking about something you were not thinking about before.

Knowing what the New Yorker means by it, requires you to open up the magazine.

Obama is a politic an and like all of his kind he can take his shots in the chin or in the back but he is going to take his shots one way or the other.

Because he is black does not exclude him from ridicule, mocking, or ribbing.

Now for some the issue is Michelle Obama who many feel has been unfairly targeted by both sides of media for no good reason.

I take it as a case by case basis.

The New Yorker no big deal.

this right here border line.

This one is straight up B%$&( regardless of the intent.

All politicians wives and family should be left out of the spot light unless they decided to jump in it them selves, , like Hilliary Clinton did when she was First lady.

All bets are off than.

It is debatable on if Michelle did this to her self or if the media dragged her into the mess as an easy target since her husband has become a Teflon Don of candidates when it comes to lampooning.

I say a little of both she is not the typical house wife, a career woman, an accomplished career woman at that who gave up her job for this role, and she has her own distinct opinions which she chooses to share with us.

The Obama's have also made this a "Team" campaign which you can argue has put her on the front lines.

And to a certain degree the two have been playing up the image of domineering house wife and "do boy" husband.

Your opinion on it tells more about your views than the publication.

The only thing I accuse the New Yorker of is beating a dead horse into the ground so that it pops up in China.

Rather morning people.

I am not a morning person you can tell by how late I respond to other blogs.

I hate the morning, I think it has something to do with growing up in New York, Im up all night and I sleep all day.

But there are times when I have to deal with the day light, like coming off work or school or handling some business.

I walk around like a zombie till about 12pm than I start to perk up.

But what I hate are the morning people, the ones who get up happy, and want to spread their happiness like a disease.

For instance there is this one lady who comes in at 6am when I am getting ready to walk out and get home before the day light strikes.

It's at this time she wants to have a conversation with and tell me about the other day.

I'm half sleep and I got to here about what here kids did.

I'm saying what the hell makes her think I want to here about what Billy and Mindy did with the dog at f#%&^% 6am in the damn morning!!!

She cant understand that I am capable of throwing that hot coffee right in her mouth!

What the hell are you so happy about?!

Go sit your butt down some where and let me think!

Anyway I hate mornings.

I like history books in particularly African history but the best ones are not from the United States which, outside of purchasing slaves, has had very limited involvement with Africa when compared to the Europeans and Arabs who have been up and down the continent and written extensively about it.

While looking for something to read I came across this book by Robert B. Edgerton Warrior Women: The Amazons Of Dahomey And The Nature Of War

The title and subject had me hook so I bit.

From the inside flap.

Although warfare is typically conducted by men, in various places and at various times women have fought bravely and well, and in the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 19th century, they formed the elite corps of a successful army. Many European visitors to Dahomey commented favorably on their military bearing, finding them more impressive in discipline and maneuver than male Dahomean soldiers. When France invaded Dahomey in the early 1890s, their superior weapons won the war, but all those French officers and men who wrote about their bloody battles against Dahomey declared not only that these women warriors were superior to male Dahomean soldiers, but also that they were the equals of the French. Robert B. Edgerton describes the history of these "Amazons" (as they became known) and their recruitment, training, and battle experience. Of particular interest to scholars interested in culture and gender today, these women believed that in order for them to carry out their martial roles, they had to transform themselves into men. How this was done, how the Amazons lived and fought, and what their experiences might mean for the understanding of women and warfare both in the past and the present are the subjects of Warrior Women.

It was a very good read and I managed to knock it down in one day.

But it left me hungry later for more like Chinese food, I taught the author could have gave more details and background history on all sides, in this case he was a little to focus, if you can believe, for a historian.

King Houegbadja (who ruled from 1645 to 1685), the third King of Dahomey, is said to have originally started the group which would become the Amazons as a corps of royal bodyguards after building a new palace at Abomey. Houegbadja's son King Agadja (ruling from 1708 to 1732) developed these bodyguards into a militia and successfully used them in Dahomey's defeat of the neighbouring kingdom of Savi in 1727. European merchants recorded their presence, as well as similar female warriors amongst the Ashanti. For the next hundred years or so, they gained reputation as fearless warriors. Though they fought rarely, they usually acquitted themselves well in battle.

The group of female warriors was referred to as Ahosi, meaning "Our Mothers" in the Fon language by the male army of Dahomey.[1] From the time of King Ghezo (ruling from 1818 to 1858), Dahomey became increasingly militaristic. Ghezo placed great importance on the army and increased its budget and formalized its structures. The Amazons were rigorously trained, given uniforms, and equipped with Danish guns (obtained via the slave trade). By this time the Amazons consisted of between 4000 and 6000 women, about a third of the entire Dahomey army.

European encroachment into west Africa gained pace during the latter half of the 19th century, and in 1890 King Behanzin started fighting French forces in the course of the First Franco-Dahomean War. Ultimately, bolstered by the Foreign Legion, and armed with superior weaponry, including machine guns, the French inflicted casualties that were ten times worse on the Dahomey side. After several battles, the French prevailed. The Legionnaires later wrote about the "incredible courage and audacity" of the Amazons.

The last surviving Amazon died in 1979.

Battle of the Bulge

Today I start my war against the bulge while in class my weight shot up but I thought nothing of it since I have always been able to drop it off pretty quick just by increasing my daily activities.

Well kill that idea.

Age has caught to me and now what I eat is happily building a home on my body namely around the gut.

My back actually hurts!

So I have come up with a plan to shed the weight.

1- Beef is out.

I am a serious red meat monster, I love a good burger and steak?

My God I cant explain how I feel about steak, but it is out, beef stays in your system for weeks before you pass it out.

2- More veggies.

My attitude toward vegetables is that they are on my plate for decoration.

That must stop.

3- Stay away from the barbecue joints.

No more JJ Rib Shack, no Abdoul the Butcher's, no This is it, most definitely no Ann's Snack Bar, you want to talk about a burger go there.

They don't make bread strong enough to hold that meat.

The other places like the Cheese Cake Factory, and the Vortex serve different stuff i just have to order it.

4- Good buy Corona hello Michelob Ultra

My God have you ever tried drinking that stuff?

It's like drinking seltzer water, but beer is the main culprit in my weight gain yet I'll be damn if I give that up.

5- Hit the GYM

No heavy weights, going light and hitting the tread mill like a champ.

The plan is to drop 500 calories a day to get a 1 to 2lb drop off a week, (or is it 3500 calories per week? Show how much attention I gave in class).

The Gym I'm at Center Court is 24 hours 7 days a week so I do the late night work out thing. As of now I burning 3000 a week but I am pretty sure that will slow down.

I want this stuff off of me by the time next thanksgiving comes around.
