Your list is not perfect actually an such list cannot be perfect without having MUGHAL-E-AZAM, MOTHER INDIA, PYASA, DO BEEGHA ZAMEEN and PAKEEZAH on the list.

and u select any criteria for the list, be it dialogue dance song acting story sets costumes make up or whatever, MUGHAL-E-AZAM will rule the list. How can u make such a mistake not to include it in your list !!!!!!!!!!

Classics are Raj Kapoor films like Shree 420. A great actor and entertainer.
And how about `Dil Se`, `Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge`, `Darr`, `Veer-Zaara`?

May be 5 of his films shouldn't be in the list, but at the very least Sholay, Deewar, and Laawaris should be there.

I agree that Mother India, and Raj Kapoor's Sangam should be on the list.

Mughal-e-Azam should be there as well.

Shah Rukh Khan, in my opinion, hasn't made a film that people would watch over and over.

He's overrated, but may be Baazigar should be up there, I guess.

I am just frustrated on using B word when referring to Hindi Cinema, it makes us look second-class, as if we are happy to bask in reflected glory. What happens if an Indian language started with S? Sollywood? Sillywood? Please. I watch hindi movies almost exclusively now. If I want sex, violence and women treated as sex objects, I would go see a hollywood movie. Indian movies are quite different, they revolve around family. Please let's not lower ourselves, let' grow up and come up with a name - how about filmistan?

As a 90s college hostellite - which is probably the one real 'watch-all-and-every-movie buff' time of ones life - I do feel there are a few notable misses in your list.
1- Andaz Apna Apna - stupid, but brilliant comedy which till this date doesnt fail to stir long laughter filled conversations in beer parties!
2- Satya - Brought realism to a level not seen before in Hindi movies - and one of the most memorable and underappreciated characters in Indian cinema - Bhiku Mathrey and Manoj Bajpai's potrayal of him.
3- Jo Jeeta Wohi SIkandar - a remake but totally fresh and fun.
4- DDLJ - simply the most successful, most watched and rewatched, fantasy movie ever made and the most glaring miss in this list.

Bravo CNN for focusing on Indian Film world. But in view of readers response you'll have to revise the list. Mugal Azam gets no 1 position. Followed by masterpieces of Mehboob Khan, Bimal Roy,Guru Dutt,BR Chopra, Dilip Kumar & Raj kapoor.
For modern cinema we can consider Yesh chpra,Yesh Raj,Subhash Ghai filma etc.

How can a list showing the best of Indian cinema be accepted without Ganga Jamna, Pyaasa, Mughal Azam,Naya Daur,Devdas (b/w)Mother India & perhaps Dil W.D.Layjaayngay.

Sholay is just a copy of many western films and was a huge success but is not a real classic. There are other films too like Dev Anand's Guide & Raj Kapoor's boot Polish.

I agree with some of the comments that Mother India is a great film, but I woudn't consider it a Bollywood Film, just a great Indian Film. Bollywood to me has to have song and dance, otherwise it's just an Indian film. So for great Bollywood films, I'd have to include Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. It's been playing in India for the past 14 years or so.

Definitely an interesting list but, besides Mother India, Mughal-e-azam and Umrao Jaan are must-have's on the list.

Further, I would say Anand should be there. Certainly one of the more poignant movies from Bollywood in the last several decades and a perfect showcase of how to make a great movie in a limited setting.

your list is accurate to an extent for example Pakeeza is one of the finest movies of all time alongwith Mugh.Azam,Mother India, Ganga Jamna & AAn(the first full color bblockbuster of India).
In b/w films we choose Devdas, Teesri Kssam, madhumati, Pyaasaa, Naya Daur & Andaz ( the first trendsetter multi starrer).

nice work CNN,
but,should have considered all the indian language movies...its bad to know that out side world got some impression that indian cinema means just Bollywood ...no one has to be blamed for that notion,but Bollywood. There are legends in another languages like Bengali, Malayalam,Tamil , Teleugu etc ...Satyajith Ray , Mani Ratnam ,AR Rahmaan are few to name.
Hope at least,next time you will consider all the indian language movies ...

Im missing some major and important movies!! Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is the longest running movie ever in India and probaly even in the world. It has been running in theatre's for over 600 weeks and still people wait in line every day to see it. This movie is more then entertainment as it's refuge for some people to forget their own sorrows, poverty or problems. Also Mother India should have been in the list. This was one of the first movies in which it wasn't all about the glamour and dancing. This movie was about the real people. Then Dil Chata Hai for bringing a whole new vibe to Hindi cinema. And ofcourse Black by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and in my opinion also Dor with Ayesha Takia.

i agree....this list is more of a amitabh bachchan list.......u cant ignore films lke Mother india and Mughale azam.....and if at all any Shahrukh khan movie deserve to be there, then it must be DDLJ (dilwale dulanhiya le jayenge) and not Kabhi khushi kabhi gham......am ok with lagaan but Qayamat se Qayamat should not have been there........Sholay, Maqaddar ka sikandar and kabhi kabhi are good commercial films but they are not true indian classic..... Hum aapke hain kaun and guru datt's Pyasa are better movies...... lagaan is concept out of dilip kumar's Naya Daur as well......so this is definitely not the list to trust.....this does not represent true Indian Cinema........

I am a non-asian fan of Bollywood. To me classics list must also mention Raj Kapoor movies. I learned a great deal about Indian culture from them. Not to mention that he's considered one of the forefathers of Bollywood industry. As to the modern movies, the film that made an impression on me recently was "Veer-Zara" - it depicts a complicated relations between Pakistan and India yet in such a beatiful and positive way.
