"....The homeowner's association doesn't explicitly forbid flagpoles but they must be "aesthetically appropriate". Short flags are allowed on porches, but Barfoot says that's not the way he was raised to respect the flag.

Networks Briefly Note Dem Mayor's Conviction, Yet Ignored Her Trial

Imagine if you will that former Alaska governor Sarah Palin was accused of taking gift cards donated to her office for redistribution to needy constituents and using them instead for a personal spending spree.

The media firestorm would swirl uncontrollably, of course, and certainly you couldn't fault the media for reporting on the ensuing criminal trial.

Well, this sort of this has happened, only to the Democratic mayor of Baltimore Sheila Dixon who was convicted yesterday on a misdemeanor charge of embezzling, yet the coverage from the broadcast networks has been non-existent until the trial's conclusion.

A search of "Sheila Dixon" among ABC, CBS, and NBC news transcripts catalogued on Nexis from January 1, 2007 to December 2, 2009 yielded only three hits. None of the stories were about Dixon's trial, and one, an April 30, 2008 "Nightline" story on predatory mortgage lending, cast Dixon in a favorable light as a champion of citizens who have been exploited by mortgage lenders.

Granted, Dixon is only a city mayor, and that may explain some of the lack of coverage, but when ABC did its part to portray her as a champion of the working poor, it's telling that there was no follow up from that network until today.

The December 2 editions of ABC's "Good Morning America" and CBS's "The Early Show" both briefly noted Dixon's conviction during news roundups from the anchor desk, while, of course, failing to note her party affiliation. NBC's "Today" however, failed to even mention the story (transcripts below courtesy of NB's Scott Whitlock and Kyle Drennen, respectively):

Woman dies from legal abortion in India hospital the third death this year.

India Woman Dies From Botched Legal Abortion at Hospital, Third Death This Year

Rajkot, India (LifeNews.com) -- A young woman in India died from a botched legal abortion recently and she is at least the third woman to have died this year. An unmarried 20-year-old girl died after complications from the failed abortion she had last week, local officials indicated today.

The Press Trust of India indicates Hansa Makwan died at the H J Doshi hospital based in this city in the western part of the nation near the Indian Ocean.

Hansa's father lodged a complaint with local police against her paramour Rajesh Ubharia and doctors of Kashi Hospital in Morbi where the abortion was done.

She was five months pregnant at the time of the abortion and the newspaper indicates she was transferred from Kashi to H J Doshi hospital after she developed complications from the botched abortion.

Officials indicate they are attempting to detain Rajesh and the doctors involved for questioning in the case.
In September, a health visitor (registered nurse) in India was suspended and local officials launched an investigation after an abortion killed a woman who was three months pregnant.

The abortion deaths point to the very real consequences of legal abortions for women and shows that attempts by abortion advocates to allow nurses to do abortions puts women's health at risk.

In this other case, the abortion was done on a woman at the Araziline CHC in Varanasi, India and the health visitor who reportedly did the abortion has been suspended.

Local police have indicated they have filed complaints against the nurse under two sections of criminal code after Mahendra Bind, the husband of the deceased woman, Rajkumari Bind, filed a complaint.

Another woman died in April in Hyderabad, who was identified as 22-year-old S Sneha. She died at Care Hospital after developing complications during the abortion.

Humayunnagar police sub-inspector Fayaz told the newspaper, “Sneha was six weeks pregnant. On the night of April 8, Gautam, his sister Jyothsna and brother-in-law Ramesh, took Sneha to the Karan Maternity Hospital at Vijaynagar colony to get an abortion done. Jyothsna and Ramesh are also doctors."

Abortion Is a ‘God-Given Right,’ Liberal Leader Declares

CNSNews.com) – Rev. Carlton Veazey, president and CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, told a small crowd of pro-abortion protesters that women have a “God-given right” to abortion and that opposition from pro-life congressmen and religious leaders would never take it away.

Veazey, closing speaker at a “Stop Stupak” rally on Capitol Hill staged by major pro-abortion groups such as Planned Parenthood, NARAL-Pro Choice, and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) told the crowd that not only did they have a constitutional right to abortion, but that they had a God-given one as well.

“Don’t let anybody tell you that religious people don’t support choice,” Veazey said at the gathering in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. “You not only have a constitutional right for abortion, but you have a God-given right.”

The rally was held to inspire abortion rights protesters ahead of a day of lobbying for federal funding of abortion in health care reform legislation. The event also served as an outlet for the activists to vent anger at the amendment offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) to the House health care bill.

The amendment prohibits any federal money from paying for any part of a health insurance plan that covers abortion and was successfully attached to the House bill in a bipartisan vote.

Pro-abortion members of Congress also attended the rally. They urged attendees to lobby hard against the Stupak amendment to have it stripped from a final version of the bill.

“Make no mistake, the Stupak amendment does not reaffirm existing law – it goes way past it,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.). “It disallows private insurers who operate in the new exchange from covering abortion services in plans receiving government subsidies.”

Calling the Stupak amendment “a stain,” DeLauro said that pro-abortion activists must make legislators “feel your wrath” if abortion coverage is to be preserved.

“So we all have a role to play in doing right by America’s women and making sure comprehensive health insurance reform finally gets passed,” DeLauro said. “But I am confident we will get there again, and that the Affordable Health Care for America Act will become the law of the land, without the stain of Stupak/Pitts.” (The Stupak amendment was co-written with Republican Rep. Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania.)

“So make your voices heard!” said DeLauro. “Those Members who are pro-choice and who voted for Stupak should feel your wrath. Those who could not find their way clear to vote for health care, for whatever reason, should feel your wrath too.”

Protesters also took on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), whose lobbying efforts were essential in passing the Stupak amendment, and which earned the ire of pro-abortion protesters.

DeLauro attacked the bishops, saying the organization’s lobbying effort may jeopardize its tax-exempt status. She also described the lobbying as “dubious.”

“As we have worked to secure this groundbreaking legislation, it was never our intention to make abortion part of the health care debate,” she said. “And, in fact, when the issue arose in the Energy and Commerce Committee, pro-choice and pro-life members came together around a compromise that ratified existing law.

“But sadly, the Conference of Catholic Bishops had other ideas,” said DeLauro. “They chose to hold comprehensive health care reform hostage to the abortion issue. In doing so, they not only used a dubious rationale that puts even their own federal funding at risk. They failed their fundamental obligation to help the poor and heal the sick.”

Veazy was even more direct, saying that protesters were there to “take on” the USCCB.

“We are also here to call out the U.S. Conference of [Catholic] Bishops, because no one religion, no theological perspective should get the kind of weight that they can [to] put pressure on the Congress,” he said.

“Hold the whole Congress up and say, ‘If we don’t get our way, we will work against health reform,’” said Veazy. “We in the religious community resent that. We believe that no religion should carry that kind of weight in legislation.”

Veazy reassured the crowd that the Stupak amendment would “not make it,” because “right will always win.”

“Stupak will not make it,” said Veazy. “I want you to go leave this place knowing that right will always win, and we are going to win Stupak.”

He simply asked that on the rare occasions he was asked to do the same, his employer roster another counsellor to handle the case. This would have respected both the best interests of the counsellor and client”....Time and time again in British Courts we see that freedom of religion, Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights, offers no protection whatsoever to Christians and other people of faith with a conscience.”

‘Equal Opportunities’ means that Homosexual Rights Trump Christian Rights in Employment, Court rules

Christians in employment in the UK will no longer be able to act according to their consciences and the rights of homosexual couples trump those of people of faith.

This is the clear message from the Employment Appeal Tribunal ruling issued today.

The Employment Appeal Tribunal has today ruled that Gary McFarlane, a Christian counsellor who worked for Relate, was not unfairly dismissed or discriminated against when he was sacked for his orthodox views on sexual relationships which meant that he could not give an unequivocal commitment to help same-sex couples improve their sex lives.

The 48 year old father of two, who is also a solicitor and a former elder of a large multicultural church in Bristol, believes the Bible teaches that same-sex sexual practice is contrary to biblical teaching and therefore that he should do nothing which endorses this activity. Mr McFarlane had no objection to others in Relate counselling couples needing advice on same-sex activity, but for him it was a simple issue of conscience.

After managers at Relate made the decision to sack Mr McFarlane in March 2008, and after internal procedures had been exhausted, Mr McFarlane took his case to the Employment Tribunal claiming unfair dismissal and discrimination contrary to the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003. In January 2009 the Tribunal ruled that he had not been discriminated against or unfairly dismissed. Mr McFarlane then appealed to the Employment Appeal Tribunal which ruled today to dismiss Mr McFarlane’s appeal.

Mr McFarlane said: “This decision is a stark warning to people of conscience in this nation that as a result of 12 years of Labour rule, the British establishment no longer values the democratic rights of its citizens to hold conscience as a matter of principle”.

“Society is the worse for not allowing people of conscience to be free to exercise legitimate rights”

Mr McFarlane was supported in his appeal by the Christian Legal Centre which instructed leading human rights barrister, Paul Diamond, and Mr Thomas Cordrey to represent him.

“The seriously worrying underlying point in this case, which the Court has refused to accept, is that for religious belief to be protected it is necessary to uphold the right to manifest that belief. The effect of this judgment is to rule out any expression of deeply-held conscience, even when the expression is limited to a very reasonable, practicable and sensible request to be assigned work such that worker and client are best served and that the work is tenable for the worker. This ruling goes against all notion of religious conscience protection and also against common sense”.

“Time and time again in British Courts we see that freedom of religion, Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights, offers no protection whatsoever to Christians and other people of faith with a conscience.”

“Mr McFarlane will be appealing this decision. We will take this as far as is necessary, even if we have to go all the way to the Supreme Court and then Europe. We will press on until justice prevails”

Merced's 'Christmas Parade' is back after outcry - AP at Mercury News

MERCED, Calif.—Merced's "Christmas Parade" is back after a name change to avoid lawsuits was blasted by residents as politically correct overkill.

The city became organizers of the 15th annual parade this year after its longtime sponsors backed out.
Officials quietly changed the name from "Christmas Parade" to "Holiday Parade" to guard against possible lawsuits claiming the city was endorsing one religion over another.

Residents called City Hall and sent letters to the editor of the Merced Sun-Star to object.
City Manager John Bramble says officials "never wanted to be the Grinch that stole the Christmas Parade" from Merced.

The parade is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m"

Ohio

However, the same lawyers group contacted an Ohio town concerning its Christmas parade and made these comments: "Unfortunately the village of Amelia in Ohio decided to call off a Christmas parade that had been ongoing for 29 years," he says. "For 29 straight years, they've had a Christmas parade; but this year they decided to cancel the event for fear of being sued."

New Jersey

"A "Merry Christmas" sign at a North Andover, Ma. fire station is stirring up some controversy, rather than promoting holiday cheer.

Andover town officials ordered firefighters to take down the homemade sign, because people complained.

The town manager said public buildings should not display things specific to a particular religion. But Chief William Martineau said the 50-year-old tradition has never been an issue.....The decision comes a week after town officials voted to allow a Menorah display on the town common for only one day, instead of eight days of Hanukkah. According to the new town common policy, displays are only allowed to stay up for one day, no matter what they are.

After all it is Christmas that is on specifically 12/25/2009 that we have been celebrating for who knows how long. A celebration celebrating the birth of Christ. Even most Americans prefer stores to saying Merry Christmas rather than Happy Holidays by a margin of 72% to 22%.

Customers can report in on stores at standforchristmas.com. And the American Family Association yesterday officially took Gap off of its boycott as Gap responded positively to their complaints and are now going after Best Buy and Dick's Sporting Goods. You can watch a Fox News report on this here.

Group’s Annual ‘Naughty and Nice’ List Shows More Merchants Acknowledging Christmas

(CNSNews.com) – If Santa is making his list and checking it twice, he may be surprised to find that for the first time since 2005, more American corporations are celebrating Christmas as a part of their seasonal marketing and ad campaigns.

The conservative religious freedom group Liberty Counsel released its annual “Naughty and Nice” list last week, putting businesses in the “naughty” or “nice” column based on whether Christmas is included in advertising and in-store displays.

“There’s far more on the nice side than the naughty side,” Mathew Staver, founder and president of the counsel, told CNSNews.com

Staver said that his organization began its Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign seven years ago to support Christmas and fight its censorship in the public square. Then in 2005, a year Staver said seemed to represent the pinnacle of anti-Christmas sentiment, a spruce bound from Canada to Boston inspired the first “Naughty and Nice” list.

A banner on the front of the flatbed truck hauling the tree read “Merry Christmas Boston” – until it reached Boston’s city limits and someone changed the sign to say “Happy Holidays.”

“Then it became evident that the retailers were calling these trees holiday trees,” Staver said of the first list compiled four years ago.

That year stores like Wal-Mart, Sears and K-Mart made the “naughty” list for forbidding their employees to wish customers “Merry Christmas” and using the label “holiday” in stores to describe Christmas merchandise ranging from trees to decorations.

But since then, Staver said the trend has been that more and more businesses have been putting Christmas back into their seasonal promotions and moving from the counsel’s “naughty” to its “nice list” – including Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Sears.

The first year, the “naughty” and “nice” lists were about the same length, but this year the “nice list” is significantly longer, Staver said.

Almost 30 businesses, however, remain on the “naughty” list for Christmas censorship, including J. Crew Outfitters, which Staver said has not responded to the counsel’s communications on the subject.

“They said that they were trying to be inclusive and sensitive,” Staver said. “The fact is, they’re being insensitive to a holiday that’s celebrated by the majority of Americans and people around the world.”

Staver said it’s really up to consumers to send a message by supporting businesses who support Christmas.

“Every consumer should make a list and check it twice, stop patronizing retailers which are naughty and shop at those which are nice,” Staver said in a press release announcing the release of the annual list. “Retailers which seek to profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist should realize they have offended the vast majority of Americans who enjoy Christmas.

“Customers have a choice, and they will not patronize corporate Scrooges,” Staver said.

AMERICA AS TEXAS VS. CALIFORNIA

Demographic researchers have compared America's two most populous states, California and Texas, in an attempt to identify why the former is imploding economically, and the latter is growing and creating wealth. They found four major reasons, says Ryan Streeter, a senior fellow at the London-based Legatum Institute.Texans on average believe in laissez-faire markets with an emphasis on individual responsibility:

California's policy-makers favor central planning solutions and a reliance on a government social safety net.
This unrelenting commitment to big government has led to a huge tax burden and triggered a mass exodus of jobs.

Californians have largely treated environmentalism as a "religious sacrament" rather than as one component among many in maximizing people's quality of life:

Environmentally-based land-use restriction centered in California has played a huge role in inflating the recent housing bubble.
Similarly, an unwillingness to manage ecology proactively for man's benefit has been behind the recent epidemic of wildfires.

California has placed "ethnic diversity" above "assimilation," while Texas has done the opposite:

"Identity politics" has created psychological ghettos that have prevented many of California's diverse ethnic groups and subcultures from integrating fully into the mainstream.
Texas, on the other hand, has proactively encouraged all the state's residents to join the mainstream.

The two states have opposite views on regulation and litigation:

Texas has focused on streamlining the regulatory and litigation burden on its residents.
Meanwhile, California's government has attempted to use regulation and litigation to transfer wealth from its creators to various special-interest constituencies.

BREAKING: NY Senate Hands Gay Activists Crushing Defeat on Same-Sex "Marriage" Bill

Victory for Democrat Sen. Ruben Diaz, who led tireless campaign to defend natural marriage.By Peter J. Smith

ALBANY, December 2, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - At about 3:00pm on Wednesday afternoon the New York State Senate voted to overwhelmingly reject legislation that would have legalized same-sex "marriage."

The measure, which would have amended New York State's Domestic Partnership Law, failed by a broad margin of 24 in favor with 38 against.

The Senate vote effectively means that same-sex "marriage" is dead in New York: a resounding victory for pro-family advocates in the state, and a heavy defeat for Gov. David Paterson and Democratic leaders, who were looking to deliver same-sex "marriage" advocates their first victory after their latest defeat in Maine.

Just moments before the vote, Sen. Tom Duane, the chief sponsor of the same-sex "marriage" bill, confidently told members of the Senate that he was looking forward to not just being "an old gay" but soon a "married gay."

However, those anticipations were dashed by a coalition of Democrats, who joined Sen. Ruben Diaz, Jr. (D-NY 32), the leader of the fight against same-sex "marriage" in the Senate, in voting their consciences with Republicans against the bill.

Debate began after a short noon recess with Sen. Duane arguing that this "legislation would provide me and tens of thousands of other New Yorkers equal rights in New York State."

"It would make me equal in every way to everyone else in this chamber," declared Duane in his brief opening remarks.

In the final speech before the vote, Sen. Duane once more encouraged his colleagues to vote on same-sex "marriage" saying, "It's always the time to be on the right side of history!"

Only Sen. Diaz spoke on the floor of the Senate against same-sex "marriage" and he told the Senate that it was a supreme "irony" that the same gay lobby, which fought so hard and spent an enormous amount of money to wrest control of the Senate from the GOP in order to get a bill on same-sex "marriage," now "is depending on them to make this happen."

"The reality is that it has been the Republican Party and their traditional values, and the Republican Party with their moral values, and the Republican Party with their family values, that has been for years and years what has kept the values in this whole nation alive," declared Diaz. "And now they are being asked to throw away these values."

Diaz mentioned that adherents of the world's major religions - not just Evangelicals - oppose same-sex "marriage," including Jews, Muslims, and Catholics. Diaz specifically praised those Catholic bishops who signed the Manhattan Declaration as a testament of their opposition to same-sex "marriage."

"The majority of the people has opposed their will to same-sex 'marriage,'" said Diaz, pointing out that in 31 states where same-sex "marriage" was put to a vote, the people voted against it. By contrast, he continued, same-sex "marriage" was legalized in three states by court order, and by legislation in two states that have no right of referendum.

Diaz proposed that instead the Senate should let New Yorkers decide on same-sex "marriage" and appealed to the Republicans once again to hold fast to their principles and vote that the people, not the legislature decide the fate of marriage.

"Remember your rules, remember your values, remember your family values, traditional values, moral values. Go back to the defense of your traditional values, join me a Democrat, join me a Hispanic, join me a black, join me a Puerto Rican, and join me in bringing a referendum to the people," said Diaz.

However the rest of the speeches proceeded from Democrats speaking out in favor of the bill.

Sen. Malcolm Smith, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, told the Senate that at stake with same-sex "marriage" was "an individual's right to feel good about themselves."

"For the first time, all men and women will be created equal," said Sen. Eric Schneiderman, Deputy Majority Leader (D-NY 34) adding that, "This law will expand the central American ideal of equality."

Sen. Eric Adams (D-NY 20) politely accused Sen. Diaz of not speaking "from his head." Adams compared banning gay marriage to "reaching back to the most ugliest [sic] period of America," when states like Virginia had laws banning interracial marriages until the 1967 US Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia.

The senator also told his colleagues that, "When I walk through these doors, my bible stays out."

The statement drew a sharp rebuke from Sen. Diaz, who stated that given the crime and state of society in America, "That is the wrong statement to send." Diaz, a Hispanic Evangelical minister, urged Senators to remember their Bibles before voting.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Alliance Defense Fund attorneys have reached a favorable settlement with the Collier County School Board on behalf of a local church barred from participating in a flier distribution program open to other community groups. In June, ADF attorneys filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Cypress Wood Presbyterian Church after school officials rejected its request to include fliers promoting an upcoming Vacation Bible School for children in the flier program.

“Churches shouldn’t be discriminated against for their beliefs,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel David Cortman. “We commend the district for its quick actions to end the unconstitutional exclusion of religious materials and allow all community groups to participate equally in the flier distribution program. Far from barring schools from including religious fliers in such programs, the First Amendment actually prohibits schools from favoring certain viewpoints over others.”

Cypress Wood Presbyterian Church contacted the district’s Community Request Office to inquire about participating in the flier distribution program, which allows non-profit community groups to send written materials home with students. The church was advised that the district “did not allow religious events to be promoted” but that the church should submit its proposed materials anyway.

After submitting its materials, the church received no response. The assistant superintendent later informed the principal that the fliers would not be distributed. As part of the settlement, however, the school board agreed to revise its policies prohibiting religious organizations from distributing materials through the school flier forum.

ADF-allied attorney Roger Gannam of Jacksonville assisted with the lawsuit, Cypress Wood Presbyterian Church v. The School Board of Collier County.

The revised figures were kept, but the originals -- stored on paper and magnetic tape -- were dumped to save space when the UEA's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) moved to a new building, say the Times:

It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.
The CRU was forced to reveal the loss following requests for the data under Freedom of Information legislation.
The admission follows the leaking of a thousand private emails sent and received by Professor Phil Jones, the CRU's director; in them he discusses thwarting climate skeptics seeking access to such data.
The lost material was used to build the databases that show how the world has warmed by 0.8C over the past 157 years...."

Pro-Life Victory as Northern Ireland Abortion Guidelines Rejected by High Court

BELFAST, November 30, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-life advocates in Northern Ireland are celebrating a major court victory today as the Belfast High Court has ordered the recall of health guidelines that they said would have undermined and effectively overturned the province's pro-life laws.

Lord Justice Girvan found that the guidelines failed to deal properly with conscientious objection to abortion and counseling on abortion. The judge said the guidelines were open to misinterpretation, saying the language was "ambiguous" and left doctors and staff unclear as to what was expected of them. The judge said the guidelines needed to be absolutely clear, otherwise they represented "a trap to the unwary."

Justice Girvan awarded court costs against the Northern Ireland Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.

Liam Gibson, Northern Ireland officer for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) said, "We hope that the department will now take seriously many of the concerns which were largely disregarded when the guidelines were being drafted."

Pro-life groups argued in court that the guidelines failed to mention the fact that abortion remains a criminal offense in Northern Ireland. They said they were "misleading and legally inaccurate" and would have brought abortion on demand into the province by "bureaucratic stealth."

SPUC had argued that it was wrong for the Department of Health to expect health care workers to give "non-directive counselling" to women considering abortion.

"It is simply extraordinary that a government department should have issued guidance on criminal legislation and not have once mentioned the victim of the crime," Gibson said.

Bernadette Smyth, director of Northern Ireland's leading pro-life group Precious Life, said, "The court decision today is a victory for our unborn children." Precious Life ran a petition campaign calling for the withdrawal of the guidelines.

"Our assessment that the guidelines were legally and medically flawed has been vindicated. They were an attempt to change the interpretation of the law and would have effectively legalised abortion in Northern Ireland through the back door."

That Britain's 1967 Abortion Act does not apply in Northern Ireland continues to irritate abortion advocates who campaign ceaselessly to overturn the province's law. Opposition in the province to abortion remains strong, however, from both the public and most political parties, including the Social Democrats, Labour Party, Sinn Féin, the Ulster Unionist Party and the Democratic Unionist Party as well as the Catholic Church and evangelical Protestant groups.

In October 2007 a motion was passed in the Northern Ireland Assembly, tabled by MLAs Jeffrey Donaldson and Iris Robinson, that rejected the draft guidelines. Nevertheless, the status of the guidelines remained ambiguous for a year while pro-life groups launched their legal challenge.

Princeton University allows an LGBT center but no center for abstinence

Members of Princeton University's abstinence club, The Anscombe Society, have asked for an Abstinence and Chastity Center for two years with no luck, yet the school has no problem supporting a center for gay and "transgender" students.

When asked why she could support a place for gay students, but not one for chaste students, President Shirley Tilghman said that the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Center does indeed support an abstinent lifestyle.

Matt Bennett, founder and president of The Christian Union, a leadership – development society for students, said Anscombe Society students have contacted the LGBT Center in the past.

"The students were asking that they bring in speakers to support students who are of a homosexual orientation who want to live an abstinent lifestyle," he said. "The LGBT club has explicitly told them they do not support that."

Instead, the LGBT Center sponsors sexually explicit workshops such as, "Beyond Monogamy," which teaches students how to pursue open relationships, and "Queer Sexualities."

CAN THE POSTAL SERVICE BE SAVED?

The U.S. Postal Service announced this week that it lost $3.8 billion in the most recent fiscal year, which ended September 30th. It also delivered less mail -- 26 billion fewer pieces, a nearly 13 percent drop from the previous year. The bad news follows losses totaling $7.8 billion in 2007 and 2008.
The Postal Service is legally prohibited from taking tax dollars. But in order to stay afloat, the agency has been actively borrowing from the U.S. Treasury: At last count, according to Postal Service spokeswoman Yvonne Yoerger, it owes the government $10.2 billion.
Moreover:

Federal law dictates that the Postal Service can borrow up to $3 billion per year -- but the debt cannot grow beyond $15 billion.
That means that while the agency, which had revenues of $68.1 billion last year, could potentially borrow another $3 billion in 2010, it will soon no longer be able to legally borrow billions from the government.
Meanwhile, the Postal Service is estimating that without significant changes, it will lose another $7.8 billion in the coming year -- and deliver another 11 billion fewer pieces of mail.

Which raises the question: Can the Postal Service be saved?
The agency cut $6 billion in expenses over the past year, eliminating 40,000 of its roughly 750,000 jobs and slashing overtime hours. But it says that isn't enough. And it's pushing for two major changes that it suggests could help get it back into the black in 2010:

The first is freedom from a government-mandated requirement that the agency pay more than $5 billion per year into a fund to cover its retired employees' future health benefits over a ten-year period; the government allowed the agency to forgo $4 billion of that obligation this past year, but the requirement remains on the books.
The second goal is to end Saturday mail delivery; the Postal Service has suggested cutting Saturday service could save $3.5 billion per year, though the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC), which regulates the Postal Service, puts that figure at $2 billion.

Kansas City, KS – An abortion clinic employee attacked a pregnant pro-life volunteer outside the Central Family Medicine abortion clinic in Kansas City, Kansas, while she was engaged in peaceful, First Amendment activity.

On November 14, 2009, an unidentified abortion clinic employee came out of the Central Family Medicine abortion clinic and began to taunt the pro-lifers. Her verbal abuse escalated into violence as she rammed her shoulder into sidewalk counselor Jennifer McCoy, who is noticeably six months pregnant. A photograph taken by protest leader Mark Gietzen of the Kansas Coalition for Life shows McCoy recoiling and bracing for the hard impact that occurred a split second later.

Police were summoned, but the abortion worker attempted to flee the scene before they could arrive. McCoy followed the woman to keep her from evading the police. After realizing that she could not get away, the worker returned to the abortion clinic where she hid behind locked doors.

Police attempted to enter the clinic to arrest the woman for battery, but they were denied access by another worker who demanded that the police get a search warrant, then lied to them saying that the woman was not there.

McCoy has since been in contact with police, who are pursuing the case. There remains the possibility that the second abortion worker could face criminal charges for impeding a police investigation.
