The Importance of a 4th Outfielder

Most of Red Sox Nation is focused on the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes, but the Red Sox have a first baseman in Kevin Youkilis should they decide that 10 years and $200 million is too much to pay for the Free Agent superstar.

What they don't have is a reliable fourth outfielder.

For the record, I am not implying that deciding on an extra outfielder is more important than signing Mark Teixeira (or re-signing Jason Varitek for that matter), I'm just stating that this hole in the roster shouldn't be ignored.

Here's why:

In 2008, JD Drew spent over a month on the DL from August 17th to Septemer 24th. Coco Crisp, who had been battling Jacoby Ellsbury for playing time, stepped up and went 36 for 93 (.387) during that time frame.

Later, during the playoffs, Jacoby Ellsbury slipped into a serious funk (6 for 32, .188) while Coco lead the Red Sox with a .417 BA in the postseason.

Interestingly, in 2007 the situation was reversed. Coco Crisp hit .268 during the regular season and never really found his groove. Jacoby Ellsbury was called up in September and hit .361 on the month. He later went on to bat .360 in the playoffs - solidifying himself as the full time center fielder.

The Red Sox planned to give JD Drew every 5th day off in an effort to keep him healthy. For the most part, it worked. Drew played 140 games that season and despite posting below expected regular season numbers: .270, 64 RB, 11 HR, he went on to hit .314 in the playoffs. Having Ellsbury and Coco on the roster made it alot easier to stick to that plan.

It should also be noted, that Manny had his worst statistical season in 2007 and played just in 133 games - missing most of Septmeber. Ellsbury was probably more instrumental during that time than when he was simply playing over Coco.

The 2007 and 2008 season proved that injuries and dead bats can happen to anyone, and having a solid back-up allows Terry Francona to give that injured or struggling player a rest without compromising the chance for victory.

So who will be the fourth outfielder in 2009? There are quite a few options:

Rocco Baldelli - A homecoming for Baldelli would be cool, but the mitochondrial disorder makes him an unreliable option, given that he'll need regular time off. His return to the game was a great story, but the stats aren't promising: .263 BA in 80 regular season at-bats, .200 BA in the playoffs... 22 games at DH - not outfield.

Milton Bradley - Bradley's power makes him an intriguing option, but he might be more injury prone than JD Drew. Bradley hit .321 with 22 HRs and 77 RBI last season in just 126 games. The Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago Cubs are both interested in acquiring Bradley, and with a chance to start for those teams, he's probably not coming Boston... but he's only been a "starter" twice in his career.

Gabe Kapler - Kapler's return to the field was another great story this season. He hit .301 in 96 with the Brewers and played all three outfield positions... That and his strong ties with Boston make him one of the better options out there.

Willie Bloomquist - Bloomquist's name has been connected to the Red Sox becuase of his infield/outfield versatility. He's a career .263 hitter, but he's got 6 career home runs in 1255 at-bats...

Jerry Hariston Jr. - Hariston is another IF/OF guy, but I his upside is light years beyond Bloomquist. Jerry battled through some leg injuries this season, which makes him risky, but he finished the season at .326, stole 15 bases and drove in 36 RBI in just 80 games... and he spent his first seven years in Baltimore so he knows the AL East.

Garret Anderson - He'll turn 37 in June, but the guy has a .290 career batting average and played in 145 games his season. He's a lefty and he could spell Ortiz at DH as well, but he's only going to work in left field. Still, I like him better than alot of these guys...

Those are a few interesting external options, but the Red Sox have a few gys in the farm that could fill this bench spot. We took a look at a few guys back when the Coco trade was announced - here's a peek:

Jon Van Every
Van Every hit .263 with 15 2Bs, 26 HRs and 70 RBI in 380 at-bats with Pawtucket. He hit just .235 in 11 at-bats with Botson last year.

Sox Prospects Scouting Report: Centerfielder with a good arm and a great glove. Average bat, speed, and on base ability. Has shown flashes of above average power, but not consistently throughout his career. Hits to all fields. Streaky at the plate, but generally has a good hitting approach. Provides outfield depth with some options, Van Every will likely be insurance for Boston while roaming the outfield in McCoy. Able to play center and left, but hasn't spent a lot of time in right field.

Jeff Bailey 1B/OF
Bailey hit .301 with 28 2Bs, 25 HRs and 75 RBI in 418 at-at-bats with Pawtucket. He mad a splash with Boston, hitting a pair of ding-dongs and batting .280 through 50 major league at-bats.

Sox Prospects Scouting Report: Bailey mainly plays 1B and corner outfield these days after previously spending a lot of time as a catcher. He is adequate defensively, with below average range, a decent glove, and a good arm. With the bat, he has outstanding power and strength. Good contact and plate patience. Slow on the basepaths, but runs intelligently - about what you'd expect from a converted catcher. Strikes out a little too much, but that has improved over the years. Has potential to be a versatile backup and off-the-bench bat at the major league level. Probably could start for a lot of small market teams. Bailey has been a team leader and model teammate with the Red Sox organization for five seasons.

Josh Reddick
21-year old Reddick hit .343 with 11 2Bs, 17 HRs, and 57 RBI in .312 at-bats with Single A Lancaster last season. It's safe to say he's not the guys the Sox are counting for 2009, but there's a chance we'll see him help out in September... get the Sox Prospects Scouting report - here.

Lastly, a number of Lars Anderson fans are lobbying for him to get a shot in the outfield, since the Sox look like they are going to block his chances at first base by signing Mark Teixeira to a long term deal. Rumor has it he played some outfield in high school... and there's no doubt the kid can hit... but he probably won't be ready for the bigs until at least 2010.

Bottom Line: None of the above free agents are flying off the market, so the Red Sox have some time... but having a reliable option in the outfield for 162 games is more important to the success of the team than you might think.

Red Sox Weekend Update: Teixeira, Manny, Nelson, Okajima

Here's a quick look at the Hot Stove rumors from the weekend:

Despite dropping over a total of $230 million on C.C Sabathia and AJ Burnett already, the Yankees are reportedly still looking to add another bat to the lineup... Manny is one option, but bringing him to New York could mean a move for Xavier Nady.

They could still make a run at Teixeira, but it's looking like it will take at least 8 years and $20+ million to land Teix...

And speaking of Teixeira, the Angels have made an official offer and they're now willing to do 8 years. Boras is still hoping to get 10 years and $200 million... which means the Orioles: seven years, $140-150M and the Nationals: eight years, $160M are probably out of the mix.

We still have no idea what the Red Sox offer is, but they still appear to be the front runners simply because they're willing (and able) to pay the most.

The Yankees are also dealing with a snag in the Mike Cameron... here's the latest from the New York Post:

The Yankees want the Brewers to take on Igawa's contract as well, but that Milwaukee doesn't want to pay much of the $12MM he has left. The Brewers are trading Cameron to trim payroll, and don't want to unload $10MM for Cameron just to take on another $4MM for Igawa.

Kenshin Kawakami's name has been tied to the Red Sox, but it appears that the Atlanta Braves are very interested in Kawakami, now that AJ Burnett is a Yankee.

The Marlins non-tendered RP Joe Nelson last week. Fire Brand of the AL reminds us that he has ties to Boston and had a solid 2008 season: 3-1, 2.00 ERA...

MLB Trade Rumors (via Ken Rosenthal) is reporting that Milton Bradley is weighing his options with the Cubs and Rays. Joe Maddon and the Rays may be a better fit than Lou Piniella and the Cubs. And spending time at DH would allow him to "protect his oft-injured body."

But will the Rays meet Bradley's asking price when they can turn to Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi, Garret Anderson, or Pat Burrell instead? Rosenthal adds that the Reds, Angels, and Nationals are also interested in Bradley.

Lastly, Hideki Okajima completed the Honolulu Marathon with a time of 6:10:26. The Red Sox are not impressed:

"One team official said the Sox were not pleased and would have discouraged him had the team been apprised of his decision," Benjamin wrote.

Yankees add Burnett to rotation

The Yankees dropped $161 million on C.C. Sabathia. Now ESPN is reporting that they have agreed to a 5-year, $82.5 million deal with AJ Burnett:

Free agent right-hander A.J. Burnett has reached preliminary agreement on a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the New York Yankees.

Burnett's agreement was confirmed by the office of his agent, Darek Braunecker, The Associated Press reported.

While Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and Braunecker are still negotiating final contract terms, the deal is expected to be complete once Burnett passes a physical.

"I can sense the excitement and the confidence that's spreading around the entire organization about what we're getting done and what we may get done still," Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner told The Associated Press Friday before Burnett's decision became known. "A rising tide lifts all boats, and the confidence and the excitement right now among the team and the organization is contagious."

The addition of Sabathia and Burnett as free agents -- combined with Chien-Ming Wang's expected return to full health from a foot injury -- gives New York a top of the rotation that can stack up with Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and Daisuke Matsuzaka in Boston.

Sabathia, Wang and Burnett make a formidable trio, but there are a few things to remember:

Sabathia is just 28, but he's averaged 207 innings per season for the past eight years... while weighing in at 290 lbs. The Yankees better hope that he's built more like David Wells than Bartolo Colon...

C.C. also has the option to jump ship and head back to the West Coast after just three years...

And Burnett is 32. He had a career year last season (18-10, 231 SO), but he knew that he would be looking for a new deal this offseason... He says he wants to win, and he'll have no lack of motivation in New York, but he's really more of a 10-12 game winner with a 4.00 ERA... not a reliable Number 2.

And then there's Wang. He spent most of 2008 on the DL with foot trouble, not arm trouble. Like Matsuzaka, Yankee fans have been forced to adapt to his unique approach, but despite averaging just 90 strikeouts during his two full seasons with New York, he posted 19 wins in 2007 and 2008.

Wang is also only 28 years old, but he'll have a lot to prove in the Spring if he wants anyone to expect another 19 win season.

Bottom Line: Signing Burnett means two things for Red Sox fans:

1) Though they have the money, the Yankees aren't likely to drop $200M on Mark Teixeira after dropping $243.5M on Burnett and Sabathia... That said, I'm a little worried that Hank and the Yankees are willing to break the bank to get things turned around in NYC...

2) The Yankees will be back in the mix for the AL East and a possible World Championship, but throwing cash at free agents reminds me of the 1990's... and that approach caught up to them in the 2000's.

The Red Sox still have the upper hand with both money and a deep farm system while the Yankees may find themselves right back where they started 3 years from now...

Red Sox unveil new logos and uniforms at Game On!

My fellow bloggers have already posted a ton of photos and information from last nigh's unveiling of the new logos, so I'll supply you with some links for more deatails... but here are the basics:

Many were concerned that the well known "B" would be replaced. It is NOT being replaced, but the press packet states that it will no longer be the primary logo:

The "Hanging Sox" logo - a prominent mainstay in the club's collection of logos since it first appeared on a Red Sox uniform in 1931 - will become the team's new primary logo and used more frequently in the future. The "Circle Sox" logo, in redesigned form, will now serve as a secondary logo along with the red "B". The decision to change was made given the long time iconic stature of the "Hanging Sox", which possesses an instant appeal and recognition of the team. All three logos were streamlined to reflect uniformity in font and messaging. The "Circle Sox" logo was further distilled and now the words "BOSTON" and "RED SOX" are in red and appear in the same font as the lettering on the team uniforms. Transition to the use of the new primary logo in signage, collateral and other materials will occur over the coming months.

There are now four uniform options: primary and alternate home, and primary and alternate road. Primary uni's are on the left, alterante uni's are on the right:

Lastly, the hanging red socks will replace the "B" on the road caps - seen here on Manny Delcarmen:

Bottom Line: I wasn't as concerned as some members of Red Sox Nation, but now that we have all the details, I don't forsee anyone heading to the Tobin Bridge over the updates. Centerfield isn't to keen on the hanging socks replacing the "B" but I'm cool with it.

We'll have some of the old and some of the new in 2009... What do you guys think?

Scott Boras is a liar? No offer for Varitek

Scott Boras told the media yesterday (while standing on a chair in the hotel lobby) that the Red Sox had made an offer for Jason Varitek.

But Nick Cafardo says that "a source familiar with the talks" is now saying that there was no offer.

Here is the transcription of Boras's comments about Varitek last night, as provided by the Globe's Adam Kilgore:

On Varitek's interest in Boston:

Boras: I think that Tek has always been a person -- he's the captain of a team, which is a rare event. And certainly Boston has let us know we want him back. We're talking about it. We also have to go out and look into other situations that will be able to him.

On the Sox' interest in Varitek:

Boras: Well, I mean, look, when a major league team approaches you about a player and offers them a contract, I guess that's serious.

So he has been offered?

Boras: Yes.

Anyone else confused? Look, the Tigers signed Laird, the Dodgers have Martin and the Marlins have been quiet... if the Sox didn't make an offer, Boras and Varitek better start asking them for one.

Note: WEEI's Rob Bradford says Theo confirmed that the Red Sox made offers to four free agents while at the Winter Meetings... but of course, that was the all he said. Red Sox Nation is hoping that one of those offers was for Mark Teixeira... the other three could have been for Varitek, Sabathia, Burnett, Lowe or perhaps a name we haven't heard 100 times this week.

Red Sox Winter Meeting Update: Teixeira, Lugo, Yankees

First things first... here's the break down of all the offers currently out there for Teixeira - courtesy of MLB Trade Rumors.

Orioles: seven years, $140-150MM

Nationals: eight years, $160MM

Angels: reluctant to exceed seven years; no offer yet? (Boras implied there was)

Red Sox: making progress; no offer yet? (Boras implied there was?)

Bottom Line: Theo Epstein and Scott Boras are masters at what they do... therefore, if there is an offer from the Red Sox on the table, we don't know the numbers. A number of sources have said that they expect the Sox to pay whatever it takes to land Teixeira... even if it's more like $25M per year over 8-10 years...

And don't count the Yankees out. They already have Arod, but he was the only guy doing any hitting last season... they could use a young, productive bat just as bad as anyone else.

ESPN's Steve Phillips says the Red Sox are having discussions with the Diamondbacks about a Julio Lugo-for-Eric Byrnes swap. Brynes would serve as a fourth outfielder for Boston; Lugo would play second base for the Diamondbacks.

Bottom Line: I like this deal alot, but there are some sticking points. Byrnes stole 50 bases in 2007, he can play all three outfield positions and has 20+ home run power when healthy... but that's the problem.

He finished the '08 season on the 60-day DL with a hamstring injury and Manager Bob Mevin says Byrnes could start the season on the bench.

Byrnes is also on the books for $11M, while Lugo is set to make $9M in 2009. Iguess the question is: What do they want to pay $10M for a utility infielder or outfielder?

The Herald is reporting that the Red Sox are likely to non-tender Kevin Cash. With Varitek still unsigned, I'm not sure what this is all about, but if they pick up another catcher or call up Dusty Brown or George Kottaras, I guess I'd be happy to see Cash get more playing time somewhere else...

Bottom Line: This does make me wonder if Tim Wakefield will be pitching much in 2009...

Lastly, the Yankees are reportedly set to sign Mike Cameron as their new centerfielder:

The Yankees have found their center fielder for 2009, as they are set to send Melky Cabrera to Milwaukee for veteran outfielder Mike Cameron on Thursday, according to two major league sources.

Bottom Line: Whatever.

Boras: Sox made offers for Varitek and Teixeira

Scott Boras sat down with the media today and rattled off a few updates. Extra Bases has the details, but here are few highlights:

Boras said he has offers for Mark Teixeira from the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals, Orioles and Yankees. Earlier today we heard that C.C. Sabathia's 7-year, $160M deal all but guarantees it will take something like 8 years and 180M+ to land Teixeira... but Boras had this to say about Sabathia's effect on the market:

I think with position players, we’ve got A-Rod up there with $30 million. I don’t think it has a measurable impact on a position player. We had a couple free agents sign last year. Probably when you negotiate position player contracts, the metrics you use are more defined with those players.

He added that C.C.'s contact will have more of an effect on what kind of deals fellow starters like Derek Lowe, AJ Burnett and Ben Sheet get this offseason:

I think the market certain pitchers is a little bit more defined now. Certainly the clubs that may have been involved in CC and the clubs that have always been interested in those players. I think in this marketplace, I’d estimate that maybe 14 or 15 teams are involved in about five players.

For the record, the Nats offer was for $150 million over 7 years and Boras said that returning to Maryland is a factor that Teixeira is considering...

What else is Tex pondering while the offers pile up?

Obviously, the club’s ability to win, and win long-term. Commitment by the owners, long-term, to the franchise being successful. Where they play, the city they’re in. He’s played in both leagues. He’s had an opportunity to make an analysis of what’s best for he and his family. And, of course, the economics.

He also said that he Red Sox have extended an offer to Jason Varitek as well... but he did not give any details.

Gammons, Buckley & Cafardo with SoxHeads.com

Soxheads.com had their daily interview from Las Vegas... here are some of the talking points:

C.C. Sabathia's 7-year, $160M deal is structured such that he can leave after just 3 years... and we all know that he really would have preffered to play on the West Coast.

Everyone seems to agree that the Sox will NOT fail in signing Mark Teixeira... mostly because the Red Sox don't really have a great back up plan if they can't add Tex to the lineup

Peter Gammons says he has heard that the Red Sox will go to 8 years for Tex. Nick Cafardo said he thinks the Red Sox will go to 10 years and $250M if needed.

Gammons said that he does not think Teixeira will sign with the Washington Nationals... but Manny could.

Gammons also said that he has heard that the current rate for Derek Lowe is 3 years, at 13M per year... not 4 years and 15M+. He says that the Yankees are the most interested in Lowe at present.

Gammons then predicts that AJ Burnett will sign with the Atlanta Braves - the only team willing to give him a 5-year deal.

Lastly, Gammons reminds us that the health of David Ortiz and Mike Lowell is still very much uncertain... making a deal for Teixeira very important and the idea of a trade for either Ortiz or Lowell unlikely at this time.

New Red Sox Uniform Update

Sox & Dawgs has Larry Luccino's comments from a WEEI interview this morning:

Larry Lucchino: Well there’s an adjustment to the road uniforms that will touch upon Red Sox tradition. It’s a little back to the future kind of thing and there will be some adjustments to the logo as well so both items are going to be announced tomorrow (Thursday, December 11).

Centerfield has a nice breakdown of all the rumors and hub bub - here... and it sounds like this image below is a pretty good example of what we can expect to see on Manny Delcarmen when he struts his stuff at the Game On! event tomorrow night.

But Larry's comments have me wondering if this logo could find it's way onto the uniform or hat...

This logo was introduced on new uniforms in 1908... 100 years ago.

Winter Meetings Update: Lowe, Lowell, Baldelli

SI.com's Jope Heyman says the Yankees are moving in on Derek Lowe, AJ Burnett and possibly Ben Sheets:

The Yankees' new rotation is starting to take shape as they are also in serious negotiations with free-agent Derek Lowe. An agreement with Lowe appears likely to be finalized in coming days, as well. The sides were discussing a contract for four years and about $66 million late Tuesday.

The Yankees, though, are intent on adding three starters and are also talking with A.J. Burnett and Ben Sheets. They are hopeful of adding one of those two pitchers to round out the expected rotation.

FOX's Ed price says that the Red Sox finally sat down face to face with Scott Boras to discuss Mark Teixeira. No word yet on how that went...

He also says the Giants could be interested in Mike Lowell if the Red Sox chose to try and move due to the log jam at 1B/3B. Extra Bases has some commentary from Theo Epstein regarding Lowell's recent surgery:

Third baseman Mike Lowell's surgery this morning was "a complete success" and his doctors were "pleasantly surprised" with the condition of Lowell's labrum in his right hip, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said this afternoon.

"I think today was a big day for that," Epstein said. "They finally got a look in there. They didn’t see anything that they didn’t expect. We’ll monitor the rehab and the recovery, but we expect Mike to be able to contribute right from the start."

Laslty, Ed Price says the Red Sox are hesitant to bring Rocco Baldelli to Boston because they need a 4th outfielder that can potentially fill in for lengthy periods of time.

* Yeah, I don't really see how signing a guy with bad muscles is going to help us when Drew goes down for a month with one of his many injuries... I'd rather take my chances with Jon Van Avery or maybe even give Lars Anderson a shot in the outfield.

Yankees reach deal with C.C. Sabathia

Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting that Brian Cashman has finally convinced C.C. Sabathia to sign with the Yankees:

After three straight days of face-to-face meetings between GM Brian Cashman and Sabathia, the big lefty decided he wants to spend the next six years of his career as a Yankee. The decision came late last night after Cashman flew to see Sabathia at his home in San Francisco. By the time the meeting was concluded, Sabathia had informed the Yankees that he had made his decision to call New York his baseball home, the Post has learned.

There are still minor hurdles to finalize, notably that Sabathia must pass a physical. But after so much belief that Sabathia was stalling because he wanted to avoid New York, he agreed to the largest pitching contract in major league history, at least $140 million.

The 6-year, $140 million deal is the largest pitching contract in MLB history.

So what does this mean for the Red Sox?

When the Mets signed Francisco Rodriguez many speculated that it would begin a surge of Free Agent signings... well Sabathia agreed to sign with the Yankees less than 24 hours after he K-Rod deal was announced, so that theory appears to be right on.

That means AJ Burnett and Mark Teixeira could be signing news deal before the day is over.

The Red Sox have had significant discussions with Burnett and agent Darek Braunecker, but Theo is not likely to give Burnett (32) long-term, high-dollar deal he wants:

"I've maintained for the last two years, if he wants five years, he's getting five years," Braunecker said.

Enter the Yankees.

New York spoke Tuesday with the agents for Burnett, saying it was prepared to exceed what the Yankees believe is the offer he received from Atlanta, a guaranteed four-year deal worth about $60 million. They also met Monday with Sheets and were examining his medical records.

"When you look at his numbers, they stack up against anyone," Girardi said. "I think injuries have kind of kept him out of that (top) class, but when he's on the mound, he's dynamite."

If the Yankees choose to focus on their major need (pitching) it could make things easier for the Red Sox to fill their major need (power bat) sign Mark Teixeira. And there were rumblings yesterday that the Red Sox are the front runners in the Teixeira sweepstakes:

"I think he'll sign with the Red Sox," the [unnamed official official of a competing team] said. "They want him. They have a good relationship with [agent Scott] Boras, and in the end, they have the dollars to make it happen."

"He is a perfect fit for the Red Sox and Boston," said another club official. "A guy who plays every day, doesn't need to be the center of attention, is a good teammate, and can hit like he does, I can't see the Red Sox letting him get away."

Red Sox to unveil new logo and uniform

They guys at Fenway West had this little tid bit from the Boston Herald this morning:

Thursday, the Red Sox have plans to unveil “changes to the ballclub’s logos” and “select uniforms.” Manny Delcarmen, Jim Rice, Jerry Remy and other club officials will be on hand for the announcement/unveiling.

Bottom Line: I doubt the famous and decades old "B" will be going anywhere, but it will be interesting to see if they freshen it up... more than likely it will be a new logo that will accompany the alternate uniforms discussed in the article.

Joe Morgan has a man-crush on Pedroia

The Projo's Joe McDonald caught up with Hall of Famer Joe Morgan at the Bellagio Hotel today. Normally, I wouldn't recommend reading about or listening to Joe Morgan, but apparently, he can be pretty concise and - dare I say it? - informed when he's not calling a game...

Rather that recap, I'll simply let you all enjoy the ride:

LAS VEGAS -- A pair of Hall of Fame second baseman are in attendance here at the winter meetings, including Joe Morgan and Red Sox legend Bobby Doerr.

Both are at the Bellagio Hotel as members of the Hall of Fame Veterans' Committee and after Monday morning's press conference, Morgan took some time to talk about current Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

Morgan has said all along that he loves the way Pedroia plays the game. The Hall of Famer feels the reigning A.L. MVP plays the game with an old-school mentality.

"To be honest, winning an MVP is great for him but it doesn't change my opinion about him," Morgan said. "I didn't need somebody else to tell me how good he was. I've always said it."

"But him winning the MVP means to me that people are recognizing that every aspect of the game counts - stolen bases, walks, playing defense, doing things for the team," added Morgan. "There was a stretch where it was all about home runs. Even [in 2008] if we had a guy to hit 60 home runs maybe he wouldn't have won, but he was deserving of it. He's good for the game because he plays the game that I know and love."

During the ALCS when the Red Sox were playing the Rays, Morgan and Pedroia stood back-to-back to see who was bigger. It was a toss-up. Both are 5-foot-7.

"The most impressive thing for me, everyone will talk about his offense, I like the way he plays defense," Morgan said. "He catches the ball with two hands. He gets in front of the ball. He's a very fundamentally-sound player. I like that."

Morgan said he feels the game will return to players doing all the little things in the game and there will be less home runs. Pedroia is the guy who is leading that charge.

"He personifies that," Morgan said. "He does everything. And it doesn't hurt [he's a little guy]."

Morgan admitted he didn't immediately think Pedroia was that good when he saw him play during April of his rookie year in 2007. Pedroia got off to a tough start before beginning his charge towards the Rookie of the Year Award.

"When I first saw him he got off to such a slow start," recalls Morgan. "He had that big swing and I'm saying 'Man, he can't hit like that.' Well guess what? He must have the best hand-eye coordination to be able to do that by taking that big swing and still make contact on those high pitches. Obviously when I saw him the second time during his first season, I knew he was going to get better and better."

"You may not have seen the best of him yet. That's my hope that he'll continue to work hard and get better," Morgan said. "You can always improve in baseball. There's not a perfect player because you can always improve if you want to and he does. He'll be a good model going forward for players, especially smaller players."

Doerr, who has said in the past he really appreciates the way Pedroia plays, quickly snuck out the back door.

Bottom Line: Good stuff from Joe... too bad Bobby didn't want to chime it. Doerr has no reason to shy away from discussing Pedroia, he's still the greatest second baseman in Red Sox history and it will take a good 5-10 more years of greatness from The Destroia if the two are to truly be compared.

Varitek declines arbitration offer... now what?

As expected Jason Varitek (and Scott Boras) declined the Red Sox' arbitration offer last night before the midnight deadline.

“We’re not going to take it,” Boras said. “We’re going to decline. We are talking with the Red Sox and other teams about ‘Tek.”

Varitek can still negotiate a deal with the Red Sox, but accepting the arbitration deal would have likely landed him a 1-year salary in the $10-15 million range. Now, Varitek and Boras will have to hope that other teams will hike the price up with their offers.

The Tigers, Dodgers, Marlins and Yankees are rumored to be looking for a seasoned catcher, but the Tigers just traded two pitching prospects: right-handers Guillermo Moscoso and Carlos Melo to the Texas Rangers for catcher Gerald Laird.

And the Dodgers already have All-Star Russell Martin behind the plate... so I'm not sure this rumor has much truth to it.

Bottom Line: I felt that the Tigers were Tek's best option for forcing negotiations... now Tek and Boras will have their work cut out for them this week.

Red Sox Winter Meetings Preview

With some help from MLBTradeRumors.com, The Bottom Line complied the latest pre-Winter Meeting rumors... enjoy.

ESPN's Buster Onley says CC Sabathia, who will be sitting down with the Red Sox and Yankees today or tomorrow, may want to wait for Mark Teixeira to sign first. If the Angels don't land Sabathia, they could be expected to compete with the Yankees $140MM offer.

Olney adds that the Sox hope to sign Kevin Youkilis and Jon Lester long-term, in the wake of the Dustin Pedroia deal. Peter Gammons suggested a deal for Youkilis could get done quickly.

Ken Rosenthal explains why the idea of Sabathia signing with the Red Sox is not far-fetched. He notes that free agent markets in years to come may not offer a pitcher of Sabathia's character.

Both Teixeira and Sabathia fit the Sox's preference for younger free agents, but Epstein almost certainly would not go to six years on Sabathia, which is what the Yankees offered. Yet, the Sox gave right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka a six-year deal at 26. And they've shown interest in another free-agent right-hander, A.J. Burnett, who is looking for five.

"There will be pitchers signed to free-agent deals who go on and are worth every penny and more, dominate for years to come," Epstein told the Boston media this week. "We're interested in a lot of those pitchers, but we have an approach and we'll probably stick with it."

Halfway through his column on free agents expected to decline arbitration, Ken Rosenthal buries this interesting nugget:

Some rival agents**...believe that Boras might be offering [Jason] Varitek in a "package deal" with the catcher's friend and fellow Georgia Tech alum, free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. The Red Sox are pursuing Teixeira, and the Nationals are among the other teams that might have interest in both players.

It's not the first time that Boras has been accused of packaging his players, and it's not the first time those rumors have concerned the Red Sox: when Boston signed J.D. Drew, there was a raft of unsubstantiated talk that Drew had been packaged with Daisuke Matsuzaka -- in whom the Red Sox had already sunk $51.1MM for negotiating rights.

Arbitration could work for both Jason Varitek and the Red Sox, suggests Sean McAdam.

For Varitek, the promise of salary arbitration would guarantee that he would be paid no less than the $10 million he earned last season, the last year of his four-year, $40 million contract with the Sox.

Though a one-year deal falls far short of Varitek’s desire for one more long-term contract as he nears the end of his career, it would offer him the opportunity to rebuild his value with a bounce-back season. If Varitek could show that 2008 was an aberration - as agent Scott Boras has suggested - he could re-enter the market after the 2009 season in a better bargaining position and, likely, in an improved economic climate.

From the Red Sox’ standpoint, retaining Varitek through arbitration would solve their short-term vacancy behind the plate and provide them with at least one more season of continuity at the catcher position.

Theo: Red Sox could re-sign Varitek and a catcher of the future

With the Winter Meetings a few days away and Jason Varitek and Scott Boras still waiting for that big offer, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein told the Boston Globe that there are more catching options out there than you might think:

From the Globe's Amalie Benjamin: While there haven't been any new developments in terms of a potential deal with Jason Varitek, Theo Epstein allowed on Thursday that the team could both sign the Sox captain and make a trade for a catcher of the future in the same offseason.

"It's probably broader than people think, maybe not so deep," Epstein said, of the trade market for catching. "If you study all the clubs, there are more teams with a catcher to move than one might think or that maybe is being represented. That doesn't mean that we've found a way to match up yet. We haven't. Probably more teams out there with catching that they can move than anticipated.

He added, "We also have catchers waiting in the minor leagues who are talented, but maybe not quite ready to step into a prominent role right now. We'll see. I'm confident that we [will] find a way to end up with a reputable catching corps that we hope will have us set up not only for 2009, but also for the future."

The Texas Rangers are the obvious source for catching talent with Jarrod Saltalamacchia (23), Gerald Laird (29) and Taylor Teagarden (25 on 12/21). MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan says the Tigers ad Red are most interested in the older Laird and that the Red Sox are more interested in the younger "Salty" and "T-Garden."

As for the mysterious other options Theo mentions, the Boston Herald recently listed a few names of interest:

The Angels are open to dealing either Jeff Mathis or Mike Napoli, and manager and former catcher Mike Scioscia is a Varitek admirer. Other catchers being shopped to the Sox: Brian Schneider (Mets), Miguel Montero (Diamondbacks), John Buck (Royals), Ramon Hernandez (Orioles), Bengie Molina (Giants), Carlos Santana, Kelly Shoppach and even Victor Martinez (Indians), Jesus Flores (Nationals), Kenji Johima and Jeff Clement (Mariners), and Yorvit Torrealba (Rockies).

The Braves, Cardinals and Rays also have made some catchers available.

Victor Martinez can still catch, but Shoppach's 2008 season (21 HR, 55 RBI, .261 BA) could make the decision to slide Victor to first base easier. That would make Santana the possible back-up, making him tough to part with. That said, the Tribe could use some pitching help and a Santana for Buchholz deal may be doable... here's what MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince said about Santana in a recent Mailbag post:

Everyone I talk to who has seen Santana says he is the real deal, and the numbers certainly agree. Santana hit a combined .326 with 21 homers and 117 RBIs in 130 games between advanced Class A Inland Empire and Kinston ... What impressed me most about Santana was the way his numbers didn't take even the slightest bit of a dip after he was acquired in the July 26 trade that sent Casey Blake to the Dodgers ... On the defensive end, the 22-year-old Santana has a strong arm, but he has room to improve as a receiver. How quickly he improves will go a long way toward determining his big league timetable, as will the Indians' decisions involving Kelly Shoppach and Victor Martinez. With Santana beginning '09 in Double-A, I'd say a 2010 big league break-in is not out of the realm of possibility.

One seeming stumbling block to making a trade and re-signing Varitek would be the Tim Wakefield issue. While Cash -- who is arbitration-eligible and on the roster right now -- was Wakefield's catcher this past season, that doesn't mean that the Sox will necessarily need a personal catcher for the knuckleballer in the future.

"We have to be mindful of the fact that Wake can be a challenge for some catchers," Epstein said. "At the same time, I don't know that even Wake feels we should limit our options at catcher because of any one pitcher. We just have to strike the right balance. [Varitek's] caught him in the past. We'll see. There's no news on that front. He's always been an option to catch him. He's caught him in the past. It's obviously something that [Terry Francona's] stayed away from in recent years."

C Hardy on Sons of Sam Horn mentions White Sox rookie Donny Lucy as a good option for the Red Sox with Knuckle ball experience:

Lucy was selected by [Chicago] in the 2nd round (59th overall) in the '04 draft (ahead of Dustin Pedroia, who was 65th. Donny played on the Stanford teams with Jed Lowrie, Chris Carter, Ryan Garko, Carlos Quentin, Sam Fuld, and Danny Putnam - all of whom have made it at least for a cup of coffee to "The Show".

He was an All-Star at A and AA and was headed towards the same at AAA when he suffered a dislocated kneecap last May. He is a real smart, off-the-charts character and mature beyond his years handler of young pitchers. Before the injury, he also had off-the-charts athleticism for a catcher, with amazing SB/CS skills. He's got some RH pop, but not to the extent he should have shown by now - and like most catchers, too many swings and misses. He also caught Charlie Haeger's knuckler in the minors.

There are not a lot of guys with his upside (and at least some MLB experience) at that position available for the Rule 5 taking. But with A.J. in Chicago, there's not much chance for him to develop.

Bottom Line: There are definitely some options out there, but there a few guys saying that Varitek will accept the arbitration offer... If Tek does sign a 1-year deal, he'll be even more hard pressed to get a multi-year deal in 2009, so I don't see it happening. If it does, it will theoretically enable the Red Sox to hold onto guy like Buchholz and Bowden - which is obviously a good thing. We've also got Dusty Brown (.290) and George Kottaras (22 HR, 65 RBI) in Pawtucket, so there's no need to panic here...

I have a feeling next week's meetings will answer alot of questions so keep your ears open and The Bottom Line on your Favorites list.

Red Sox officially sign Junichi Tazawa

The Red Sox have formally announced the signing of Japanese righthander Junichi Tazawa

The 22-year-old Tazawa reached an agreement with the Sox on a three-year contract earlier this week, and the Globe's Amalie Benjamin and Tony Massarotti have learned that the the total value of the contract is $3.3 million.

Tazawa will receive a $1.8 million bonus, with salaries of $450,000 in 2009, $500,000 in '10, and $550,000 in '11. The Sox retain his rights as a pre-arbitration eligible or arbitration eligible player until 2014.

The Red Sox confirmed the length of the deal but did not disclose the financial terms.

Tazawa joins the Red Sox organization after a four-year amateur career with the Nippon Oil ENEOS of the Japan Industrial League.

This past season, Tazawa was 13-1 with five saves and a 0.80 ERA in 21 games,11 starts. He struck out 114 batters and walked just 15 over 113 innings.

In September, Tazawa helped Nippon Oil win the 32-team Intercity Baseball Tournament for the first time in 13 years. He appeared in all five of the ENEOS’ games from September 1-9, and won the tournament's Most Valuable Player award, going 4-0 with one save and a 1.27 ERA.

Bottom Line: This kid's name is "Junichi Tazawa." Let me be the first to start the nick name game with...

Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis had a career season in 2008 batting .312, hitting 29 homers and driving in 115 RBI... all while bouncing from first to third and sliding into the clean up spot in the second half.

Dustin Pedroia signs 6-year, $40 million extension

The Boston Globe is reporting that Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia signed a huge extension today. The deal is for $40.5 million over 6 years. The deal also includes an $11 million club option for the 2015 season.

UPDATE: Extra Bases just posted a full breakdown of the deal with some interesting details like this tid-bit:

"For the Red Sox, the big point here is that they bought at least two or Pedroia's free agent years for $10 million per. If the club exercises the option, they will effectively have signed Pedroia to a three-year deal (beyond 2012, when he is eligible for free agency) worth $31 million. Pedroia's gain is that he obviously guarantees himself a good deal of money now and gains a great measure of long-term security."

Bottom Line: Now Dustin can finally afford to put that addition on the side of his house - you know the extra room he needed to build to hold his 2007 World Series ring, the 2007 Rookie of the Year Award trophy... the 2008 Silver Slugger Award trophy... his framed 2008 All-Star jersey... his 2008 Gold Glove Award MVP Award trophy... and his 2008 American League MVP Award trophy.

2009 Red Sox tickets on sale Dec. 13th

The first chance to purchase 2009 tickets for Red Sox home games will be at 10 a.m. ET on Dec. 13.

Red Sox fans will be able to get Fenway Park tickets for select games in '09 in one of two ways:

The more expansive option is the popular Sox Pax, a four-game ticket package that has a variety of seat options. The Red Sox are offering 10 different packages.

The latter opportunity is by choosing single-game tickets from a choice of 15 dates in April and May.

The single games that will be available include the Rays games on April 8 and 9, the Orioles games on April 17, 18 and 19, the Twins games on April 21 and 22, the Indians games on May 6 and 7, the Rays games on May 8, 9 and 10 and the games against the Blue Jays on May 19, 20 and 21.

No real surprises here, but it should be noted that while Jason Varitek was expected to get an offer... Paul Byrd was not. It's very likely that Tek could sign with another club, so it makes sense for the Red Sox cover their butts, but with a number of free agnet pitchers on their radar and kids like Masterson, Buchholz and Bowden likely to spend time as major league starters in 2009, it's tough to see why the Red Sox offered Byrd a deal.

They may simply be taking the opportunity to grab a draft pick if Byrd does sign elsewhere... or they may be thinking that Paul Byrd could be helpful to the club should Tim Wakefield go down or the kids don't develop as hoped.

He's certainly a cheaper option than Derek Lowe $16 million asking price... and he's been a 10+ game winner in 5 of the last 6 seasons.

Also, the Red Sox didn't make arbitration offers to Bartolo Colon, Curt Schilling and Mike Timlin, catcher David Ross, infielders Sean Casey and Alex Cora, and outfielder Mark Kotsay.
