Microsoft seeks community help to make IE8 Standards Mode work out

If users install their first Internet Explorer 8 updates, and they notice their favorite Web pages look like scrambled egg soup, will they blame the browser? That s the dilemma Microsoft is facing as it cautiously embraces Web standards.

As testers of Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 are already aware, the new default rendering mode for Web pages is one that promises compliance with standards officially set forth by committees such as W3C. But the big problem major Web sites have all experienced guilty as charged is that they must support the somewhat standards-skewed rendering mode of previous versions of IE, up to version 6, in order to accommodate a majority of browser users.

Despite all the outreach to sites, we saw from the telemetry data that IE8 Beta 2 users still have to use Compatibility View a lot, wrote IE8 Program Manager Scott Dickens yesterday on his team s blog . Looking at our instrumentation, there were high-volume sites like facebook.com, myspace.com, bbc.co.uk, and cnn.com with pages that weren t working for end-users with IE s new standards compliant default. We could also see from our instrumentation that not all IE8 visitors to those sites were clicking the Compatibility View button. So, large groups of people were having a less than great experience because they weren t aware of the manual steps required to make certain sites work.

There actually aren t too many manual steps to take conceivably, as few as one ; the problem has apparently been with compelling users to want to take any steps at all.

A recent test of IE8 Beta 2 shows BetaNews itself doesn t look all that hot in standards mode.

To that end, Dickens revealed yesterday, future builds of IE8 -- distributed at first, most likely in the form of update patches and through the first Windows 7 public betas next month -- will maintain an ongoing list of sites that appear to require Compatibility View, in hopes of aiding the browser in making the switch automatically. However, Microsoft doesn t want to be compiling this list alone.

When users install Windows 7 Beta or the next IE8 update, they get a choice about opting-in to a list of sites that should be displayed in Compatibility View, Dickens wrote. Sites are on this list based on feedback from other IE8 customers: Specifically, for what high-volume sites did other users click the Compatibility View button? This list updates automatically, and helps users who aren t Web-savvy have a better experience with Web sites that aren t yet IE8-ready.

Rather than take a cue from Google, this list will not be automatically compiled and shared with some server in the background. Instead, Microsoft will have humans make the determination, based on submissions from beta testers and frequent users. Microsoft will regularly update this list for IE8 users in the background, but only if users opt in to that service, Dickens demonstrated.

Whether developers get around to doing this work or not, the people who use the Web expect that the web will keep working, the program manager concluded. They want the benefits of interoperability and standards. They don t want to deal with compatibility issues.

A 12-nation crackdown on software counterfeiters is keeping Microsoft s lawyers busy this week, with 63 legal actions under way against shady online sellers.

The majority of cases announced on Thursday involve fake versions of XP and XP-related software; no surprise, as popular products at the end of their life cycle are often vulnerable to counterfeiters wiles, as would-be buyers freak out and stock up. What s surprising is the amount of effort the auctioneers put into their marketing schemes -- a trend toward more brazen pirate activity, according to Matt Lundy, a senior attorney with Microsoft s World-Wide Anti-Piracy Team.

One effort, involving the Blue Edition of Office, illustrates the problem nicely. You re not slacking on your Office trivia; there is no Blue Edition. The auctioneers, however, claimed that would-be buyers hadn t heard of it because it was a special, limited release. Buyers who took the bait on Blue Edition auctions -- many of which were conducted on respectable sites such as eBay, Amazon and ouch MSN Shopping -- received, essentially, writable CDs or DVDs with a blue design printed on and a copy of Office burned in. In some cases, the Blue Edition code appeared to have been altered, though Lundy declined to say whether those changes included malware or the like.

Burned buyers turned to Microsoft for help, and that s where the fun began. Over the past several months, the proprietors of hundreds of sketchy auctions were contacted, and Microsoft worked with auction sites to remove questionable listings. We partner with eBay to remove, daily, listings for counterfeit software, says Lundy. All of the sellers who could be located were served with cease-and-desist letters, and those who chose not to comply are being sued.

Action is underway against counterfeiters in the US 16 legal proceedings this week , Germany 12 , France 12 , and the UK 7 , plus cases in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Mexico and New Zealand. Lundy points out that each country has its own way of handling copyright and trademark issues, so Thursday s efforts were even more complex that you d expect.

In the US, civil cases were filed in district court in western Washington against defendants from 12 states. Other countries make violations a matter for law enforcement; there were police raids on suspected vendors in Brazil and Canada. An investigation in Japan found one seller funneling shoppers from a legitimate e-commerce site to his own, where he sold the fakeware. And some cases make you wonder what else the accused parties were up to -- in Colombia, cases in Bogota and Medellin netted suspects who are also believed to be engaged in tax evasion and fraud, neither of which charge is anything to sniff at.

A savvy observer might wonder why China s not on the list, especially since at least some of the actual warez came from there. China has, notes Lundy, been on the receiving end of Microsoft s anti-piracy efforts before; this week s group just doesn t happen to involve any China-based sellers. Likewise, busts like these happen year-round -- though Microsoft acknowledges that the timing, near the top of the holiday shopping season, has a certain consumer-education aspect.

An independent research report released today by eLearning and advanced content solutions provider IMC UK Learning Ltd reveals nearly four out of five 78 HR leaders believe it is important to reduce costs such as those incurred on external training courses, while over half 57 want to minimise the time staff spend out of the office on such courses.

The survey, Staff training during an economic downturn opportunities and threats , polled 150 UK HR professionals on their training needs, practices and expectations during an economic slowdown. It found that a flexible and cost-effective training solution is vital during an economic slowdown with 79 of respondents stating the importance of being able to produce in-house training content quickly and cost-effectively.

Color, a Microsoft design team discovered with the aid of a focus group, is quintessential to a positive user experience. In advising developers to add delight to their apps, a team leader made a revelation about Windows 7 s mission.

LOS ANGELES - During a mid-day session on best practices for designing applications to take advantage of Windows 7, Microsoft s principal design manager Samuel Moreau told attendees that his team was charged with the task of building new visual elements into the new user interface specifically to make users feel better about the operating system.

The term chosen for the goal his team would strive to achieve is delight. And to that end, the design team came up with, in effect, a concept for devices whose entire purpose is to invoke some sense of fun and happiness.

That may seem like a really strange thing; I realize now, I m the design guy on stage at PDC, and I m talking to a bunch of developers about delight, said Moreau at one point. What delight looks like...is pleasure, enjoyment, and love. How do you actually get somebody to enjoy the experience of using their PC? It s a really odd thing.

Moreau then proceeded to demonstrate what he introduced as an API for delight, including a slide showing sample code...which he then conceded to have been entirely in jest. Then instead, he showed an example video of a participant in a Microsoft focus group who spent several unprompted minutes playing with hovering the mouse pointer over the icons in a prototype of the Windows 7 taskbar, just to notice that each icon was lighting up with a different color.

For the new taskbar, we actually set out -- and maybe we re crazy, but we set out -- to actually design in what we call delighters, said Moreau. Now, our characterization of what a delighter is, is literally something that puts a smile on someone s face. But how do you achieve that? We had all kinds of ways the team got together, we had brainstorms, and different ideas.

One of those ideas culminated in a system where the underlying application gets to choose the color of its own halo, rather than a traditional Control Panel setting.

As Moreau explained, We knew that, as a UI function, we needed to show some user feedback when the mouse enters the region that is a launched application icon -- that s a UI thing we had to achieve. Now, what we could ve done is made it the Windows System color. That s great. But we had this sort of thing in the back of our mind -- we wanted to put smiles on people s faces. So through the course of a number of different brainstorms and explorations, the idea popped up, What if we let the application shine through? What if we let the application color shine through to the experience, and let it be about the application? Let s not be about Windows here.

So every time you hover over a launched application, you re going to get a color that s unique to that application. Now, what s going to happen is, the more you use your Windows 7 taskbar, the more applications you launch, the more windows you have running, the more color variants you re going to have along the bottom, the more beautiful your experience is going to be.

Moreau did not take questions after his session, so we didn t get a chance to ask whether his team would be task with applying similar beautification to User Account Control.

Google wants to expand into Russia, but Russia won t let it

Google s attempts to buy a Russian contextual ad firm Begun are now being blocked by antitrust authorities in that country, who have turned down Google s application -- temporarily, at least.

Russian antitrust authorities today rejected an attempt by Google s affiliate there, Kokuna Holding, to buy a contextual advertising firm named Begun from Russian-based portal Rambler for 140 million.

Today, October 23, FAS Federal Anti-monopoly Service Russia released a message to reject petitions filed by Kokuna Holding Limited on the acquisition of 100 of the voting shares of JSC Begun. Kokuna Holding is an affiliate of the American Google, according to a translation -- performed by BetaNews using the Google translation engine -- of an article in the Russian publication CNews this morning.

The decision to refuse the transaction was made pursuant to paragraph 5 of Part 2 of Article 33 of Law On Protection of Competition. In accordance with this item, FAS may decide to reject the application if the deal would restrict competition, including as a result of the emergence or strengthening the dominant position of the applicant.

But the article in the Russian publication also seems to leave open the possibility that Google s affiliate might simply have erred in its paperwork, and that the buyout of Begun -- which would give Google a big toehold in the Russian online advertising business -- might eventually go through.

CNews quotes a press statement from FAS as saying that the information submitted to the agency about Google was incomplete.

The lack of complete information about the group Google does not fully reflect the effects of the transaction, but may also indicate a limitation of competition due to a decrease in the number of business entities in the relevant product market is not falling into one group of persons, according to the Russian-to-English machine translation.

Paul Allen's Evri whips up a semantic widget

Evri, a Seattle-based semantic-Web project backed by Paul Allen's Vulcan Capital, has thrown open the doors on its beta site and on Evri's Garden, a sandbox for researchers and interested bystanders.

Formerly known as Hypertext Solutions, Evri's first widget offering in the Garden is a pop-up that examines the words it finds significant (generally nouns) on a page and returns various related articles, images, and video, and (if sufficient connections are available) a circle-and spoke chart, showing terms with which a given word has a close connection. An automatically generated chart might link, for example, Barack Obama with Joe Biden, or Beverly Hills with Ed McMahon, or Mariners with failure. (I may have made that last one up. You can check for yourself on Evri's site or download the widget for your own uses.)

Like Google News, the search process is entirely algorithm-driven, drawing its links from a variety of highly regarded information services, very nearly in real time. By parsing the semantics of the information it finds, Evri aims to provide better context than a search engine might -- guiding you to, for instance, articles on Madonna the singer rather than Madonna the religious figure. (One of those Madonnas is, by the way, Evri-linked directly to Bill Clinton. Guess.)

An early version of the search widget originally saw daylight at last May's All Things D conference. During his demonstration there, CEO Neil Roseman, formerly VP of technology at Amazon, described the widget's MO as search less, understand more.

I question whether Evri entirely understands my most profound search needs; a check for the television show Pushing Daisies passed back on-point images, news, connections and a Wikipedia-based show synopsis, but the duplicate photos of the show-inspired crochet afghan may have been a bit random. Still, it works, and could add a little semantic sparkle to many a dull Web page.

T-Mobile Android G1 phones priced at $179, launch Oct. 22

Google's two founders appeared on stage this morning at T-Mobile's launch event for the G1 phone, describing it as essentially a smaller laptop computer that isn't too much trouble to carry with you.

NEW YORK, NY (BetaNews) - At the T-Mobile G1 launch event, executives announced the launch date for the G1 Android-based phone in the US will be October 22. November is the scheduled month for the European launch, though a specific day has not been mentioned.

Executives revealed that the carrier will be offering two unlimited data package plans with the G1, priced at $25 and $35 per month. The $25 plan is for unlimited messaging, while the $35 plan adds the Web and other Internet-based services. These plans will be in addition to the $179 base price for the G1 phone.

T-Mobile executives confirmed Wi-Fi will be included with all G1s.

"What gives me pleasure with the launch of G1 is that I'm a bit of a geek," said Google's Sergey Brin, appearing at today's launch event (surprising absolutely no one). "It's very exciting to me as a computer geek to have a phone. I can play with and innovate with, just as I did with computers as a kid."

"This is as good a computer as you could have [just] a few years ago," added Google's other co-founder, Larry Page. "It's kind of difficult to carry your laptop with you at all times."

Cole Brodman, T-Mobile's chief technology and innovation officer, told attendees he expected the G1 to be more of a consumer device than a business device, although he was certain mobile workers would want to use it as well. He did not go further to say whether an Android-based business phone was in the works.

How will the G1's Gmail differ from Gmail on other non-Android phones, as well as from the Mail service on Apple's iPhone, one reporter asked. The two key differentiators Brodman mentioned were a much quicker search function, and the first-ever mobile implementation of Google Talk Presence -- a function which currently enables Google's Talk IM users to determine each other's availability and location.

Andy Rubin, Google's senior director of mobile platforms, told attendees that the final 1.0 release of the Android source code would be released to the open source community sometime in November, obviously several weeks after the G1 phone is already publicly available in the US.

A T-Mobile spokesperson told BetaNews this afternoon that the G1 would clearly be the first of several Android-endowed phones that the carrier will bring to market, though for now, little more is being said about those models.

So we've seen Sprint's Xohm trucks driving around downtown Baltimore during most of September, in anticipation of the service's impending launch. But as the month nears its end, there's still no launch announcement.

BALTIMORE (BetaNews) - Rumors have recently circulated that Sprint's Baltimore Xohm network would be announced as soon as this Friday, with availability beginning on October 6 and with Baltimore, Maryland being an early rollout target. Sprint told Betanews this morning that the September launch for Xohm in Baltimore is still firm, so at most we've got one week before getting Sprint WiMax.

Clearwire, on the other hand, told us that the transaction combining the two companies has not yet closed, so anything Sprint does with Xohm at this point is its own business.

Sprint's WiMAX network has come to an extremely slow boil. The project was announced three years ago , and has since been plagued with consumer doubt and speculation on its future. The uncertainty was bolstered by the current economic situation, Sprint's high customer churn , and the company's inefficacious offloading of the Nextel iDEN network .

In the spring, Sprint Nextel partnered with Clearwire to form a new company dedicated strictly to expedite the deployment of the US' first WiMAX network. With a reported $3.5 billion in funding from Intel Capital, Google, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, the new company -- to be simply called Clearwire -- would set out to build a nationwide 4G network with both companies' WiMAX offerings.

An independent Android developers' blog reports having received an official invitation from carrier T-Mobile to cover a press conference in New York City Tuesday morning, where the first Android-powered phone will be unveiled.

Earlier this morning, UK time, during a session for Google's "Developer Day" world tour in London that had not appeared on the official schedule, Google developer advocate Mike Jennings reportedly demonstrated a fully working prototype of Android running on a touchscreen phone. Though a piece of tape was used to mask the phone's branding, its shape and size were almost unmistakably identical to an HTC Dream, a phone which could sell for as little as $149 during a limited-time promotion.

BetaNews has inquired with T-Mobile for more information, though we frankly don't expect to get much more before Tuesday.

After a pullout last year appeared to pit two of America's most resplendent, rainbow-colored properties at odds with one another, NBCU's Jeff Zucker had his chance to make a Steve Jobs-like play for the Apple faithful.

NBC's comeback to iTunes was announced this morning in San Francisco by Apple CEO Steve Jobs during an event where its two best-selling iPod models were updated. The importance of that announcement is both symbolic and significant: At one time before the network pulled out last fall , it was estimated that as much of 40 percent of all television-derived content purchased on iTunes was produced by NBC.

Earlier disagreements over pricing had strained the relationship between the network and the service provider, at the time that NBCU was busy getting its online video service Hulu off the ground. NBC's return would likely accelerate video downloads significantly in the coming months, as the market has matured quite a bit in the one year since the pullout.

It does appear as if NBC got its way somewhat, with the introduction of a variable pricing model. Standard definition shows will still be made available for $1.99, although high definition versions of some series will be available for a dollar more. Breaking from its standard pricing model, Apple will allow NBC to charge 99 cents for select "catalog" downloads.

We've seen Microsoft patch vulnerabilities in Windows that we swear we'd seen before, and sometimes they all look so much alike that they tend to run together. But this one really is a classic: a buffer overrun triggered by a fake image file.

Who can forget the tumultuous days of 2004, when what was then considered a major threat to Windows loomed large: a way to easily trigger a buffer overrun in GDI+, Microsoft's once-improved Graphics Device Interface library? While patches were finally distributed that September, it seemed the company's eventual solution -- a completely new graphics foundation, WPF -- couldn't come too soon.

Four years later, the possibility of an uncontrolled exploit to GDI+ -- still a principal 2D graphics library in Windows -- apparently remains imminent. So perhaps the most important security fix in this month's Patch Tuesday from Microsoft includes a new patch for GDI+, to address possible buffer overrun exploits that can be triggered using maliciously crafted GIF, BMP, Windows Metafile (WMF), and Enhanced Metafile (EMF) images, as well as Vector Markup Language (VML) images that include gradients.

"The vulnerability is caused by a heap-based buffer overrun when GDI+ improperly processes gradient sizes handled by the vector graphics link library," reads Microsoft's bulletin this morning .

The September 2004 exploit is looked upon as the textbook example of the heap-based buffer overrun principle, though in this case involving JPEG images. In low-level programming, there are two types of storage buffers for the data that a program may need to use. A pointer keeps track of which item is the next to be recalled, and a "pop" instruction pulls that item from memory. For a stack, data is written to memory in such a way that the first item in becomes the last item out. A heap works differently, more less like a stack of papers on one's desk: the first item in becomes the first item out.

The heap situation is said to be a little easier to exploit because whatever memory element can trigger the overflow can be added first and exploited immediately. Still, that doesn't explain why it took four years to realize that the same technique a maliciously crafted JPEG file would use to overflow a buffer, couldn't be used by a GIF file or a WMF file.

On the other hand, it could be said Microsoft has already produced the ultimate solution to the heap-based overrun problem: 64-bit Windows Vista, whose reformed kernel includes multiple features that could theoretically have broken apps running in a similarly reformed 32-bit kernel, such as heap corruption prevention. Sixty-four-bit versions of both Vista and Windows Server 2008 were included on Microsoft's list of software not susceptible to the vulnerability.

Separate fixes issued today address remote code execution exploits for Windows Media Encoder 9, a media content production tool that was not updated along with Media Players 10 and 11; and separately, WMP 11. There's also a curious potential exploit affecting the OneNote component of some higher-end editions of Microsoft Office, where a malformed URL entered into a note could trigger a validation error that could somehow (the specific means have not been explained) lead to an elevation of privilege for a malicious user.
