Since I might have struck a nerve...

You know Ruger's entry into the AR-15 style market might not be a bad idea but they could have at least made a totally new rifle?

I mean that has not been done in a while and the last attempts have either not gone anywhere(Masada) or failed horribly(FN2000). I would really like to see someone make a totally new design or at least update an older design with modern engineering.

Ruger tried to take their old Mini-14 and make a "Target" model instead of just building a new rifle. Shit even Para-Ordnance is trying to get into the market. Nothing special just an AR-15.

Come on!

People stamping a name on something that is the same or very similar to what someone making is the problem. People don't know that the Remington R-15 is nothing more than a re-badged Bushmaster with a cool paint job!!!

Just as the old saying goes, "If you build it, someone will buy it."

People just don't care enough anymore. They want what they can get and they are willing too pay anything to get it.

Maybe I will start building AR-15s and sell them for crazy prices just because I can!!!

New stuff and old ideas

I love when companies show innovation and new approaches to older ideas.

I do not like it when companies try to pull the wool over my eyes and add their name to a product that is just like 20 others down the road.

A good example is a specific company offering another AR-15 clone with nothing more than a piston "upgrade" to the gas impingement that still works just fine on hundreds of thousands of AR's across the world.

If you are going to "fix" something that ain't broke then at least make it look cool. Just stamping your name on the gun isn't going to make me want your's more than the other hundred companies making the same thing.

Sure AK47s and other rifles have been using piston systems for a long time.

Who gives a crap???

Doesn't make it the only way to go...

I mean if I can build a simple AR-15 in my garage and have a fully functional gun along with doing the same thing with building an AK. Is one better than the other?

Piston or gas impingement???

If both guns work then what is the point???

Stress and dogs

So...
I have discovered that I have a bit of stress in my life.

I have a wonderful Girlfriend and a great life with her. I have a pretty good job when no one is telling me I'm a dirtbag.

The GF is now moving in with me and I figure it will be a little stressful and it is. Now we have added a dog to the mix! She is a Rott mix, we think Sheppard but some think some kind wire haired dog(she has a beard). I never knew walking a dog could relieve stress this well!

We have been watching Ceasar Milan's show, The Dog Whisperer, and I have become a fan of his methods. The 45min walk has been something I have started to look forward too. Our dog is named Kimber(yes the firearms manufacturer) and she is a rescue. Such a good pup! I love her very much and she makes me a proud Packleader!

If you are going to rescue a dog you need to watch Ceacar's show and get his book "Be the pack leader". You will begin to understand why his rehabilitation methods work so well.

I have been off and on the net lately because of recent deployments and just plain laziness.

Plain laziness you ask?

Why yes! I am a lazy fuck!

I am so fuckin' lazy that I am going to get a lawn service to take care of my yard work! I have certain wants and desires in this world and not doing yard work is one of them! Wouldn't you pay an extra $75-100 a month to never do yard work again?

FUCK YES!!

I just hope my estimate is closer to the truth than my fears.

I fear with all the gas prices skyrocketing(thank you my job!) and other strange happenings that it will be closer to $200 a month. Still not too bad.

I have come to the realization that i should change this blog's name to more of what I wanted in the first place.

Random Thoughts of an Amateur Gun Guru.

Here is a sample of what is to come...

Most commonly an amateur is understood to be someone who does something without pay or formal training.

Most people think that because you are an amateur that you don't know squat about what you are talking about. I see it a little differently.

Amateurs don't get paid.

Professionals do.

Amateurs can be just as good if not better than the pros as we have seen on shows like Pros vs Joes.

I don't get paid for my opinions and I don't really care what people think of me or my opinions. You need to do your own searching on the internet and come up with your own opinions. If someone takes my advice and it works out great for them then AWESOME!

If it doesn't...

Oh well. I tried.

More often then not I have done a lot research into whatever topic I am commenting on and I know what I am talking about. I don't try to pretend anything or give a bullsh!t answer. I hold a person's integrity to the highest and I will continue to call a spade a spade no matter what anyone gets a offended at.

We should all strive to be the best at what we do and I have to say I am slacking. I have not been giving XDtalk my fullest attention considering I have been dividing my attention between internet arguments(wrestling with pigs in some places), work, the forces of reality, and a the demand for a normal sex life keep me elsewhere. I can't over emphasize the necessity of practice in shooting and I can't tell you guys enough that just cuz the gun didn't work for you doesn't mean they are all broken.

Anyway...

Those of you that still believe Glocks are crappy, ask Dave Sevigny what he thinks.

Those of you that think traditional DA handguns are crap, go ask Ernie Langdon about that one.

To all those Revolver haters out there, Jerry Miculek has a few things to show you.

Been quite a while since I was here last. I was not allowed access to my Blog in Qatar but that is OK. I am not pissed. To all who anxiously awaited my safe return, I am back and I am very safe.

I was in the R&R spot in the desert so I was not concerned at all that I would be in any danger but we all still have worries.

This is going to be brief.

Thanks to all that read my blog and thanks to all that respond to it. I can't understand why you guys read such a boring blog but thank you none the less!

I am off to the Deid as they call it.

This will be my first trip to this particular hell hole. I hope I can keep myself busy for 60 days. My boss, the ate-up laid back guy that he is, is going with me. He wants to evaluate my work habits. Man... 13 years and I am still getting "evaluated"!! I hate this job. I don't get paid enough, it is thankless, and people never just let you work. I mean even sweeping the floor has people telling you how to do it. Like I am going to fuck up the floor or something.

I feel like Rodney Dangerfield. No Respect!!! I only have 7 years of this left though. I can retire, what little of that there is, at 39!!!

No the desert will be another learning experience. Just one more...

Stupidity

There are some real dumbasses out there.

I saw a guy pass a person on the shoulder just cuz he was a little late.

Be patient people!

I watched a guy freaking out over getting cut off by a car he wouldn't let change lanes. The car had its signal on for at least a mile and no one let him in! He was forced to cut someone off to make his turn. I was forced to slow down to 40mph on the 55mph highway just to give him a chance.

Be polite people!

I knocked a kid down in the BX today because he was running at full steam down the isle. I am not going to slam myself against the vacuum cleaners just to make room for some dumb ass kid. He was 3ft tall and it was no contest. He bounced off my hip and took out a rack of shoes. It was awesome!! His mom came around the corner and saw him on the floor crying and proceeded to rip my ass! I told here to control her kid more and that he shouldn't be running rampant like that. I didn't know the base commander was there and saw the whole thing. She started saying "Do you know who my husband is?" Little did I know the base commander doesn't like that kind of crap. He told her she needed to "Instill some discipline into that boy!" He told me I was fine and to go back to shopping. He continued to talk to her as she started getting really upset.

Discipline your children!

The next time you see snow falling from the sky...

You are driving too fast. Go slower. Nothing is worth flipping you SUV, Minivan, or Neon. Having lived in Alaska for 10 years taught me that I can get to work just fine if I leave a little early and drive slow enough to not die!

Computers Revisited!

I have my computer back!!!

However it is half the computer it once was...

Along with the mobo, one of the memory modules was damaged and is not installed which knocks me down to 1GB of RAM.

Also during the installation of the mobo to the case and associated parts, I found I could only install one of my video cards!

No more SLI graphics for me!

Now I just need to find some more RAM and maybe figure out a way to dismantle my video cards, without destroying them, and install smaller heat sinks.

I am looking into this one as an option.

Badass huh?

I hope it is much shorter than the old ASUS heatsink.

Being in the states again has me liking the fact that shipping is much cheaper than Alaska but I have to say that Alaska had its advantages.

#1. Alaska had good power. I never had a problem with Black-outs, brown-outs, or any other "outs" for that matter.

#2. Alaska had the best tap water in the USA. Period! I don't care what kind of minerals you got in your water Alaska has the best tasting, cleanest, softest water in the USA!!!

#3. Alaska lets me carry my gun. 'Nuf said!

On the the main topic.

Computers.

I had a kick ass gaming PC. Operative word: HAD! It had some of the best components you could get at the time and was easily over $2000 in value when built. SLI video cards, 2GB ram, FX55 processor, you know the works!.

Now I doubt I would use it as a door stop.

It got fried somehow. Most of the components work it just won't boot. AT ALL! No POST no nothing. Just spinning fans and a power light. Oh well it was getting old anyway.

So it turns out the mobo(motherboard for all you non computer types) was fried by a bad power supply. Oh well I didn't want to play Bioshock to the end anyway. Yahtzee Croshaw says it sucks anyway.

Any way I got a new mobo and power supply and the computer boots up now but I can't get the damn thing to load XP home or PRO. it keeps saying my CDs are corrupt!

WTF??? How the fuck does a CD loose its data????

As this new conundrum perplexes me I will simply try a different CD drive until the damn thing works. Or I might just take all the parts out and shoot them!!

Toilets and Reloading

I didn't realize that fixing a toilets would be so frickin' painful! Good lord!

The toilet leaks.

Everyone at some point will have to deal with this one. that little seal in the flapper (or the whole flapper in my case) goes bad. The toilet has a constant drain and therefore a constant refill.

Easy.

Replace seal??

No not that simple. First you have to find the part for your toilet.

I could not find the seal for my toilet parts ANYWHERE!! Not even online!!! No one had this one little part. So I tear my toilet down (yes I knew how to do it) and get all the parts I needed out and head off to Lowe's, one of my favorite places (the other is Sir La Table)! I get there and figure out that I was right in bringing all the parts with me. There was a lot of stuff that would confuse a would be toilet fixer!

Now I get the stuff I need along with some other stuf that I really didn't need, and head back to my house to fix my toilet!

I have done this before.

It did not take me two and a half hours last time. Also the toilet didn't shoot water all over the floor either. Apparently the set-up I chose had a tank to toilet seal that was about 1/4in shorter than the old one. This constituted the toilet spraying water all over the floor!!!

WTF??? I used to be good at fixing things. Oh well...

Foodies and Throwdowns

I am coming to grips with the fact that I might be a foodie. I am really starting to love this cooking thing. Not enough to try being a professional cook but enough that I like to cook for friends.

Interesting thing about food. It really does make people happy!

Now comes the part where I bring in some food I have made.

I made pot roast. I used Alton Brown's recipe. I haven't really learned enough about cooking to know what tastes good together or why but I do know how the food does what it does when you cook it.

Braising is not poaching.

A roast in the crock pot with just water is just gross.

A roast with a flavorful liquid(aka sauce) on the other hand is divine!

Alton's recipe is nice but it is even nicer the second day! I really liked bringing it to work and heating it in the microwave and having that wondrous aroma emanate from that strange metal box that cooks with magic! Soon a small crowd is gathering, wondering what this strange smell that is attacking their olfactory system.

Let me say this.

I hate sharing.

I was forced to let some of them taste what I had made and they were flabbergasted that some dude cooked up this food!

I told them I did it and they didn't believe it. I also said I made a cheese cake and that put them over the edge!

"Oh you got to make a cheesecake for us!", they proclaimed!

I say, "OK, it will be a few days cuz I gotta get the ingredients together."

That's when it happened.

One of the girls states she can kick my ass at anything food! I said OK lets have a Throwdown!

"Chocolate chip cookies," she says.

"OK," says me!

My cookies kept coming out a little hard and I am just not very good at it. Haven't done it enough. Not like the "pro" I was challenged by. Hers were soft, chewy, and FLAVORLESS!!!!!

Needless to say the workplace was very much divided. Some people liked mine because they had a lot of flavor and good yummy chocolate. Some people liked hers because they were soft and chewy. They just didn't taste like anything. Not even the chocolate had flavor, it was just there.

Little do I know that this would be the first of several Throwdowns!!

Next she says, "Sugar Cookies! I am gonna kick you ass at sugar cookies!"

There are to kinds of sugar cookies. Check out a Google Image Search on the words "Sugar Cookies" and you will see.

Drop style.

And.

Rolled style.

I made drop style and she made rolled style.

I am not sure who makes the rules about cookies but I know that a sugar cookie is not covered in icing.

I made the type I have always known as "Sugar Cookies". The rolled kind were what we ate at X-mas, but hey I made what I knew! They were pretty darn good! Someone had the audacity to say I had bought them at the store and repackaged them!!

WTF???

That stupid bitch is the same one that said my pot roast tasted pretty damn good!.

Store bought!!! WTF!!! Anyhow, the girl that made what amounted to X-mas cookies just made with Autumn colors and shaped like leaves, told me my cookies were darn good, but this wasn't a fair contest because her cookies were rolled and mine were dropped.

Oh well. Another draw.

Move forward 3 days. I ask her what we are doing for the next throwdown. She says...

Carrot Cake.

2 words that will ring like the sound of pistol whipping a grunt in my ears for a while.

I have only made one carrot cake. It was another Alton Brown recipe.

I haven't even come close to making up my own stuff yet. I have modified some recipes to my liking and I have started to make many things on my own like tomato sauce, spice rubs, and making homemade fruit sauces is about as close as I get for building my inner chef.

Anyway...

Carrot cake. I tried this recipe once already and I knew just how good it was. some things I have learned.

Carrot cake is not cake. It is a muffin with icing.
Spun aluminum pans are the coolest thing on the planet!
Proper pan preparation is a must! Parchment paper is your friend!

I also learned that I need to study icing a bit more. Needless to say Spice cake is not carrot cake. She made a Spice cake with carrots!

There may be many reasons to watch the food network, but one of the best has to be CHEESECAKE!!!!

This is what happens when you get your act together and really try hard to make a recipe. I have never been the best cook but I have a new found respect for the people that make my food.

I just got done reading Anthony Bourdain's book, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underworld and all I have to say is WOW! I have seen chefs and what they do and I have to say...

I have more respect for the people that prepare my food than I could have ever imagined. These guys have gone through hell to get where they are. Slaving over a hot stove is not even close! If you are one of those people that like cooking and wants to be a chef or open a restaurant you need this book. It has the ins and outs of the restaurant biz and even some good info for home cooks.

Also check out these books and TV series:

Alton Brown's cookbook series I'm Just Here for the Food as well as his TV series Good Eats.

This show is where I got the recipe and technique for the cheesecake. It wasn't that hard at all but it is a long recipe and you either have to bake it early in the morning and wait till the after noon or the next day. I also just got done with Alton's Coconut Cake and Carrot Cake. I screwed up the Coconut cake by missing an egg white in the batter. It was a little tough too. It would have made a great Liquor soaked cake. Maybe some coconut rum would have moistened up the cake. Oh well maybe next time!

Oh yeah I am also heading out to the Area 5 Championships in 2 weeks!!!

I had seen everyone shoot it from the top down and I was pretty confident I could take the thing on.

I wanted to see what it does when you shoot it bottom up.

Not a bad idea.

Just a bad skill level to try it at.

I got to go shooting!!!!!

I got to meet the people at my new club and they were very cool!!!

These guys have a crapload of toys too!

A Goofy rocking target, and a bunch of other target systems including 2 full plate racks!!!!

I am going to have so much fun with this group! I just can't wait a month to shoot a match!

I shot a friend's M&P40 and it was a pretty good gun. It needs a trigger job bad. Oh well it was a borrowed gun and I was happy to shoot it.

I shot it in Limited division and loaded my magazines up to 15 rounds each. It was not a disadvantage at all. Most of the stages had a spot where you were forced to reload or needed to reload in order to engage the targets efficiently. I also had to go first on a stage and really didn't get a good walk through. Oh well it was a first match in a long time without shooting. I will do better once I get my own gear.

Boredom

I am so tired of driving around this town!

I can't go to work yet, I can't go shooting(no guns), I can't buy a gun(not a resident), and I can't move into my house yet because so much crap has to be done still!

I am getting the house inspected on Friday. at a cost of nearly $300. In Alaska this price was only $125. I am not quite sure if this is the best guy for the job, or maybe I am in the wrong business.

Then I have the appraisal at $325. Who knew? Jeez!! Not only do you have to buy the $120,000 house but you have to end up paying an additional $5000 in all kinds of goofy fees. This is crazy!! Makes me not want to buy a home ever again!

Oh well. I just hope the frickin' thing sells when it comes time to get rid of it in 4 years. If that is how long I end up being here. Not that it is a bad place, I would just rather be in Arizona.

Luke AFB. That is where my dream is. I want to live in the reverse of Alaska. Hot all year round, very little if any cold weather, and LOTS OF SHOOTING!!!!!!

Practically every major shooting school is located in Arizona. Lots of Big matches to shoot and I can get tons of experience. Not that I can't here. The Eastern Nebraska Practical Shooters are a diverse group and I am sure I will fit right in!

Women and Houses

There are so many gorgeous women in this state! I am so out of my league!! I cannot fathom how I survived Alaska. Not that women are unattractive there, just very hard to find.

Here I think they truly grow on trees! I think that they are mostly city girls though. I guess Alaska had me spoiled a bit with the very diverse female base. Not enough "Tom-boys" here. I don't think some of these women have ever been out in the "woods" before, let alone even seen a true wild animal like this guy.

Ain't he cute? He was a little bear. We saw several bears on out trip. 3 total. Lots of other animals too. Elk, Deer, Caribou, and Moose.

Not too many of the girls here have even seen these animals unless it was a zoo.

Oh well. Mrs. Right is out there somewhere.

Wonder if I can find a hot cop chick?

Anyway.

The axle is fixed, I made an offer on a house, and I still live in a hotel room! I hope I can get this house deal to go through because I am getting tired of looking at houses. Most of the stuff in this area is very old and not updated. The one place I kind of fell in love with is a marketed nightmare! Frickin Investor houses suck!

If you don't know what an investor home is it is a place that was usually foreclosed on. Then a person comes in, purchases the home for the purpose of "Flipping" it or turning it over. This drives the local market crazy and can hurt some peoples property values.

It really hurts when these people are not interested in making a nice home available for a person that will live their and they hold onto the home for the potential value rather than letting the home go for what it is worth.

What its worth...

That has it's own meaning too. Home Flippers also make strange upgrades that drive the home's value in strange directions as well. New carpet, New light fixtures, New laminate flooring in a single room, a new water heater, or something else cheap to drive the value above what it truly is.

None of these is truly functional.

New windows, New heating unit, New locks, Electrical upgrades

These are functional. These are safety minded. These help drive the true value of the home.

I hope my offer goes well and I hope I get considered for acceptance or at least get a counter offer. That would make me feel better.

Oh well.

My Jeep has a rear axle leak. Thank good my dad caught it. I hate car so much I have trained myself not to know much about them. I guess I will have to change that. I used to be out of sight out of mind.

I am also having a hard time with dear old dad. He is a great guy but I have just about had enough of his Canadian voice. One or twice would have been funny but he keep repeating the same shit over and over again. He is only 54. I think he is doing it just cause I hate it and he likes to feel in control.

Whatever.

I have started to give him my I don't give a shit mentality and it seems to work for a little while.

Bad thing is it makes me feel like crap because I make him decide where we go all the time.

In reality I could give a crap where we go, sleep, or eat.

I just have one mission.

I am very happy with my trip so far and I am in love with road trips. I will have to make many more. After being cooped up in Alaska I think I deserve it.
