Those days were harsh, rulers were all-powerful. How could one hope to find love? Well, read on!

MM: Welcome, Rachel. I want to jump right into this interview. Why don't you tell readers a bit about yourself and share how you started on the journey of writing?

RR: Thank you, Miss Mae. I'd be happy to. Being a bookworm with my own opinion about how a story should end, I've been rewriting stories in my head since before I could write. The urge to put my mental wanderings on paper first appeared when I was about twelve. I wrote a novel for school, plays for my homeschool group, short episodes of fiction for my friends, and then before I knew it, I couldn't stop. I'm an addict. I don't think I could stop writing even if I wanted to, which, of course, I don't.

I didn't study writing in college. At that time I was still in denial. I started out wanting to teach. Then, halfway through college, after marrying my husband, I switched over to Accounting. Upon graduation, I spent four years working as an accountant for not-for-profit companies before returning home to raise our son. Now I tutor high school students in writing on-line, and work on my own writing in the moments I can capture when my toddler is in bed.

MM: You stay busy! Interesting how the writing "bug" dug its tentacles in you at such an early age. :) Now, I already have your books listed, but tell us a bit about both of them.

RR: The Crown of Anavrea takes place in a world similar to Medieval Europe. Labren, a wounded soldier on the run, collapses in the depths of the woods of Braulyn. He expects to die, either from his injuries or at the hand of his pursuers. What he didn't expect was Eve, a slave woman willing to help him despite great consequences to herself.

Excerpt:

Her hands shook as she pushed back his hair and pressed the back of her hand to his forehead. Her pleasure at finding it cool must have shown on her face because she could feel his small smile. “Your fever seems to have left.” She picked up the lamp to return it to the table. Remembering his previous question, she answered it. “I will check your shoulder in the morning. Right now you need to get back onto the bed. The floor is too cold.”

Nodding meekly, he shifted as she rose. Offering her his good arm, he said, “If you pull, I might be able to get up.”

Gripping it firmly, she asked, “Ready?”

He swallowed carefully and then nodded. She pulled and he slowly gained his feet. Slipping her arm around his waist, she bore most of his weight as they crossed the uneven floor to the place he had been laying the evening before. Through a series of careful and painful negotiations, the stranger was sitting on the edge of his bed and trying to recover his composure. His face was very pale and drawn and for a moment, he sat with his eyes closed. He was going to start shivering soon if she did not retrieve his blanket from the floor. She was about to turn away when he reached out and laid a hand on her arm. She looked up at him and he caught her chin in his hand.

Fixing his eyes on her, he said, "Thank you."

MM: Mmm, I like it already! And what of the other book?

RR: The Mercenary's Marriage came to life when Darius (the main character) leapt out of my head like Athena from Zeus' skull and demanded that his story be told. A fully trained mercenary warrior, scarred and weary, he was looking for a wife. Therefore, when he spotted a fleeing slave girl among the haunted shadows of the recently conquered stronghold, he decides she is the one for him. With the permission of his king, he pursued her with the intent of making her his wife. Brice, however, needed a lot more than one instance of protection to persuade her that he had her best interests at heart.

Excerpt:

She was small and her legs so much shorter than his that Darius found himself adjusting his stride so he was not dragging her along behind him. He needed to get back to the king. The girl might know something useful.

She stopped and dug in her heels the moment the entrance to the hall was in sight. He delayed his reaction until he had pulled her behind the heavy column next to the door. Turning, he backed her up by her shoulders into the shadow of the wooden pillar and blocked the only escape. He towered over her in a way that anyone who saw him would not be able to see her, though they would definitely wonder what he was doing facing a wall.

“I need to report to the King,” he told her. She was shaking so badly he could hear her teeth chattering. Most likely, the memories of the massacre that had taken place in the room were now filling her mind. He had not removed his hands yet and he was afraid if he did now, she would collapse.

"He is going to have a few questions for you, but after that, I might be leaving you with him." Moving his hands from her shoulders to each side of her head, he lifted her face so so she was forced to meet his eyes. Their green depths were glinting with unshed tears and her bottom lip trembled despite her obvious fiery resolve that it not. "If you wish to be safe, stay with the king if I leave. He will enforce my claim on you, but if you leave his presence, I cannot vouch for what will happen. Do you understand?"

MM: I sense that Darius is an honorable man, and fortunate for Brice that he's chosen her! :) But now I'd like to ask why you've chosen this genre, and what you find interesting about it.

RR: I've always enjoyed the past. History enthralled me with its different rules, lifestyles, and ideals. However, I initially did not like the effort and research that it took to write a true historical novel. I was impatient to get to the best part, the characters and their stories. I decided to make my own rules. Creating my own world, I gave it history, rules, cultures, peoples, and landscape. Although there's no magic involved, the world wasn't like any place on the earth past or present. Then, upon that stage, I began playing out my characters' stories. As a more mature writer, I still am impatient to get to the characters and their stories. However, my more cent projects, those that haven't made it to publication yet, are much more complex than my early work. I've just finished a science fiction work, set on another planet with humans in the future. The culture, though based on Roman influences, centers on the existence of the Talents, sending thoughts and mass-moving, that manifest strongest in the seventh born males of a family of seven sons.

MM: I like science-fiction, and I'm intrigued by that story line. Do you have to do very much?

RR: Yes, I do quite a lot. In order to write anything well, there is a surprising amount of work to do. I spend time researching real history and culture to get ideas and information about what works or does not work. In one of my novels, The Servant of Anavrea, my characters travel to the island nation of Ratharia. It was a place that I had referred to in other books (Darius, the hero of The Mercenary's Marriage, is Ratharian), but I had never described it in detail. Suddenly faced with developing a new culture, I spent time developing clothing, government structure, and culture. Borrowing from India, Pakistan, and other cultures, I assembled the Ratharian culture.

When I prepared to write Living Sacrifices, a science fiction novel, I spent more time than I usually do on the history and setting. Set on a different planet, I chose a different calendar, physical indicators like two moons to indicate the disparity. Working from the basis that the original colony was Roman, I choose names for my characters, places, and titles using Latin words. I modified them slightly as though they had been changed with time. Roman fashion influenced much of what my characters wore. I wanted to be sure to create a culture different enough to give it a bit of an exotic feel, but close enough for it to seem realistic.

MM: Wow, with all of that going on, how long does it usually take you to finish a manuscript?

RR: It depends on how my life is going at the time. My shortest project was The Mercenary's Marriage. I wrote it in a few months. My life was extremely stressful so it took the form of therapy for me. Darius became the person that I wished I could be at that time in my life: decisive and in control.

Living Sacrifice, the science fiction novel, took three years. However, during that period I only spent about a year and a half actually writing. The rest of the time I was pregnant, having a baby, and adjusting to being a mother.

My longest project was probably Cecily's Quest. It took about six years to finish.

MM: Six years? I was just discussing this with some of my online writing friends. It's amazing how well-spoken, vivacious writers can clam up when they're suddenly required to discuss their work with non-writers. I had to read this book to find out what tangled web of deception, intrigue, and murder that brings possible heiress Mona Murphy and the rakish-handsome insurance investigator, Preston Hitchcock together. That said, I wasn't disappointed. I was completely surprised by "who done it" (WILL NOT GIVE AWAY A SPOILER!!) And the romance was sweet, engaging, and a lovely way to see this exciting story through to the end. Miss Mae expertly weaves all the fun, flirtation, intrigue, twists, turns, and joy of a good old fashioned mystery/thriller. By the end you'll be wondering if Preston and Mona aren't the next Nick and Nora Charles. Orange Blossom of Long and the Short of It says: "...All the characters are so distinct. I could almost hear the intonation of their voices. I definitely had a visual in my head from the word picture presented by the author. Miss Mae is definitely becoming one of my MUST READ authors. The whole thing was like one of those fun houses at the circus except it wasn't so fun for the characters as doors slide shut, rooms disappear, etc, etc... Who knows what puzzle they’ll have to solve to move on to the conclusion?"

Thank you Orange Blossom! Her whole review can be read here!

And also today I'm featured at fellow Class Act Books author, Rebecca J. Raye, a reviewer at Writers and Readers of Distinctive Fiction, has ranked "It's Elementary, My Dear Winifred" with the highest prize -- a Top Read Excellence!

She says: "...While “watching” the development of the very sweet romance between Winifred and Remington, you get to play a game like “Clue,” or even better -- one of those computer games where you have to solve the riddle in one room to get to the next! I had to catch my breath at some spots of danger and I said “ah ha!” as riddles got solved and doors got unlocked!...The writing flows beautifully with the characters fitting perfectly in the historical time period and setting. If you love mysteries (especially Sherlock Holmes fans) and historical romance, even Gothic, you couldn’t help but love this. And if you don’t necessarily read those genres, but want to try something different, I enthusiastically recommend this book for a very fun puzzler and sweet romance!"

Thank you, Raye! He's retired from the USAF, and is now busy writing a trilogy. Here are the covers of his first two books (last one not yet available). Book one, Child Finder and book two, Child Finder: Resurrection. Book three will be called Child Finder: Revelation.

This man is so interesting, let's jump straight into the interview.

MM: Colonel Mike, tell our readers about your background. I think folks will find this fascinating!

MA: I'll be happy to, Miss Mae. I retired from the U.S. Air Force in September 2007 in the rank of Colonel. I enjoyed an exciting 25 year career as a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI). To put it into perspective, the OSI is the Air Force version of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) which has its own television show these days. During my career, I held thirteen different assignments throughout the world, among which were five tours as a Commander of various units, to include an Air Force OSI Squadron and a Region, the equivalent of a Wing. When I retired, I was one of the Air Force’s senior-most criminal investigators and counterintelligence and counterterrorism operators.
The bulk of my operational counterterrorism experience was in the Middle East. Following the 1996 Khobar Towers terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia, I was dispatched to command all OSI units throughout the region, with responsibility for 23 countries. My teams effectively neutralized numerous terrorist threats to U.S. forces in the region, to include an imminent threat to senior Department of Defense officials. I decided that in retirement I wanted to parlay my career experiences into creative writing, drawing inspiration from the things I did, and the places I traveled.

MM: Wow. I'm both awed and impressed. Right off the bat, let me tell you how grateful I am to you, and to those who served with you, for your service to our country. Also, I did warn you that I'd tease you about being an american James Bond! And experiences like yours only proves my point. *sly grin* Okay, on to the books. Describe the concept of these tales.

MA: Child Finder (debuts June 9th) is the first novel in a trilogy I am writing, all focusing on the heroic adventures of my protagonist, Major (OSI Special Agent) Patrick S. O’Donnell. Pat is a unique combination of 24’s Jack Bauer and 7th Heaven’s Eric Camden. He’s a tough-as-nails investigator and a heart-of-gold husband and father. In Child Finder, he discovers he has a special psychic gift that permits him to find abducted children. He gets wrapped up in a Top Secret program run jointly between the Department of Justice (under FBI auspices) and the Department of Defense. Things go smoothly at first, but he soon finds himself surrounded by the murders of people close to him. The story is set against the backdrop of the 9/11 terror attacks, and the government has other things in mind for his psychic skills besides finding missing kids. He must solve murders, find children, and protect his family which gets trapped in a twisted web of government intrigue.

MM: I think you have a premise for a suspenseful movie! And the second book?

MA: In the second book (scheduled for release late fall 2009), Child Finder: Resurrection, Pat is re-drafted into the secret program, but this time with the promise that it has been made pure, legal, and ethical. He rescues many, many children as his psychic skills are strengthened and honed to precision. But he also does battle with a menacing child murderer – an evil and cunning psychotic genius. Despite the improvement in his psychic abilities, Pat finds this nemesis to be a formidable foe, and one who nearly costs him his life.

MM: I'm getting chills already. *inhales deep breath* And the last in the trilogy?

MA: In the third novel, Child Finder: Revelation (should publish circa winter 2010), Pat is sent on a dangerous mission to Korea to solve the abductions of a senior government official’s children. What he discovers about these kids and where they have been taken, disrupts the foundation of international relations. Most significantly, Pat will learn sensitive government secrets – the Holy Grail of knowledge – that will rock his understanding of who he is, his understanding of life, and challenge his own faith assumptions.

MM: My mind is spinning. It all sounds intriguing, exciting, dangerous, adventuresome...whew! Help me out here, and let's just concentrate on the first book. How did the story come to you?

MA: I was moved early in my career by crimes against children. As a dad myself, I always found it difficult to reconcile the pain I saw so many kids endure as victims of crime. Every child crime I was exposed to literally broke my heart, and there were many nights I’d come home from work deeply saddened by what I saw. I frequently would daydream about how much better it would be – not just for child victims, but for law enforcement professionals who work child crimes – if there were someone who had the psychic ability to simply point to a map and locate all missing children. As my fantasies developed, I wondered how the government would react to such a person…would it craft a secret program to deal with such a gift? If so, what would happen to a hero as he was pulled into such a program. As I thought it through, I decided it would make for great fiction – an inspiring story with a lot of intrigue and danger thrown in to make it a good thriller.

MM: I agree one hundred percent! So, let's concentrate on your hero, Pat. How did you develop him?

MA: I took a chance. I realized that most protagonists in this genre (mystery/suspense thrillers) are rough and tough, and rarely show a soft side. I wanted both! Pat is a family man (has two small children), a deeply-faithful Christian, happily-married, and has an incredibly strong moral/ethical compass. At the same time, he is a “kick-ass” investigator and counterterrorism operator (I provide some back story to his “prior” Middle East exploits). These contrasts come into play as he enters this Top Secret program – he finds himself pulled in many directions where he must make tough moral/ethical decisions (is everything he is asked to do actually legal?). He wants to save kids, but at what price? I also used his faith for contrast as well. He is a man who grew up with an unfulfilled sense of calling – is it the psychic gift and rescue of children? He’s not sure, so he grapples with what it all means.

MM: And is there a special woman in the story?

MA: A main character is FBI Agent Vicky Desantis – a seductive and sultry single woman who runs the Top Secret program that exploits Pat’s psychic skills. She possesses an intoxicating magnetism that draws Pat in. He becomes attracted to her, thereby challenging his fidelity (will he remain faithful to his wife?), and also challenging his moral foundation (she seems to be the one pushing the legal edges of all they do in the program).

MM: Uh oh, she sounds like trouble! But, ooh, all this Top Secret stuff...Do you actually name any of the Top Secret agencies you’ve worked at, or did you make up a special agency?

MA: All agencies I used in the story are real, but I employed considerable literary-license about what they do. During my long USAF career, I had the opportunity to work with virtually every US federal law enforcement and security/intelligence agency, so I have a good understanding of what they do and how they do it. My story has a lot of “alphabet soup” as we call it in the Intelligence Community (OSI, FBI, CIA, etc).

There is a fair amount of reality-grounded technique that I use in Child Finder. For example, something called the Interagency Process (when all the alphabet soup agencies convene high-level meetings) is used in the book just like in real life. Also, I use real world terminology like, “Special Access Program,” and “Black World” operations to describe what Pat gets mixed-up with. Where it becomes fiction is in the story-line and plot – stretching their reality to make for some (hopefully) thrilling reading!

MM: 'Black World'? 'Special Access Program'? CIA? I'm wondering if you had to get special clearance to even write about these! Okay. Anything else?

MA: One feature I draw out is something I encountered often in my career when dealing with Special Access Programs. By the way, these are the most sensitive government programs, where entry into the “Black World” “club” is a Top Secret clearance as a minimum, with a clear need-to-know paramount. Each “SAP” has a limited number of “billets” assigned to it to keep the number of people “read in” to a minimum. During my career I frequently worked SAPs where protection of the existence of the program was more sacred than the outcome the program was designed to produce! In Child Finder, hiding the existence of the SAP that Pat is read into becomes more important than rescuing children as far as some of the program’s proponents are concerned. This is not an uncommon absurdity in the real world, and in my story it creates some great tension for Pat and issues he must work around.

MM: Oh boy, I just bet! Listen, I've gotta ask. How did you get involved with 'spying'?

MA: I always had a fascination with government intrigue and espionage, ever since I was a young boy. I originally wanted to join the FBI when I finished college, but the Bureau wouldn’t hire me until I had at least three years investigative experience. I joined the USAF OSI to get the required experience – but never left! Twenty-five years later I found myself retiring without having given the FBI much more thought.

One point of clarification – the FBI and OSI have a counterintelligence mission. In other words, these agencies catch spies as opposed to conduct spying. I grew up in the OSI during the Cold War, with considerable experience going after Soviet agents (KGB, GRU, SVR) all over the US and Far East Asia. One operation I’m particularly proud of was in northern Japan where my unit uncovered a Soviet plot to steal critical US technology. We countered the KGB agent involved, prevented the theft, and set back Soviet military advances for several years (the Russians were really counting on this device to speed up their acquisition cycle). Later in my career, when terrorism became the threat du jour, I specialized much more in counterterrorism.

MM: See, I told you you were a James Bond! Soviet plots, critical US technology! Wow! Your life should be a movie!

You know Miss Mae is a romance author. Is there romance in your book?

MA: Child Finder is not really a romance story – although in many respects, the deep love between Pat and his wife is very romantic. Of course, there is that sexual energy between Pat and Agent Desantis that makes for some “romantic” conflict!

MM: *purses mouth* Hmph, let's move on to another subject. I'm interested to know if any of the scenes were actually drawn from experiences you lived through while fighting terrorists?

MA: Somewhat – I don’t typically like to talk about what I did there with any specificity, so I didn’t want what I did for real to migrate into my story much at all. In general terms, there were some operations I went on that I exaggerated for back story purpose in the book. For example, I describe a flashback Pat has to an event in Kuwait where he and his mentor spotted two terrorists about to launch mortars from a sand dune against some stealth aircraft on a nearby runway. This is similar to something my mentor and I experienced in Kuwait many years back…only in our case we didn’t crash our jeep into anyone or end up in a gunfight like my hero does.

MM: A gunfight? Yes, just like Bond! So what are the strengths of your hero?

MA: His rock-solid moral foundation, strong Catholic faith, deep love of his family, and a proud Irish-American heritage. And of course, his psychic gift – although initially he thinks it’s more of a curse. Another strength he has is a unique condition called synesthesia – where his brain blends and overlaps his senses (colors have sound or taste, for example). Sometimes Pat “sees” with his ears or “smells” with his eyes – and there appears to be a nexus between his psychic ability and his synesthesia.

MM: Synesthesia is a new one for me, though I am aware of those people with Acute Sensory Perception. I even touch on that in one of my books, but I changed the term to Enhanced Sensory Awareness. Getting back to Pat, your hero. We know his strengths, what might his weaknesses be?

MA: He has no poker face whatsoever! Even telling white lies betrays him. Consequently, when he’s trying to keep secrets from his wife – even innocuous ones the Top Secret program requires for cover purposes – he typically flubs them. Another weakness is his “newness” to the psychic gift. He doesn’t know what to make of it, or how to use it properly, but he receives hands-on support by another character, a psychiatrist – Dr. Woodrow “Woody” Davis (picture a kind, grandfatherly Morgan Freeman). Between them, he’s able to better understand and control (somewhat) the gift he has been given.

MM: That would make for some tense, difficult moments! Okay. What convinced you this needed to be a trilogy?

MA: It may sound corny, but Pat O’Donnell came to life for me in Child Finder, and I couldn’t see him fading away with just one story. I wanted to keep him on life support with at least two more books (and maybe even more in the future following this trilogy). Additionally, I get a sense of catharsis by writing – it helps me de-stress a bit following my law enforcement career, with all the experiences I had dealing with child victims. If I can save a few kids in fiction, it’s a kind of therapy for me.

MM: Oh, believe me when I say many authors would agree their characters come alive so much that they can't "put them to bed" either. Totally understandable. And I appreciate how writing these stories works like therapy.

One thing I especially find curious: has anyone seemed to have a hard time believing a Colonel can morph into an author?

MA: Many of my peers thought I was crazy when I told them of my plans. Normally, retired Colonels go to work for defense contractors in high-stress, high-paying jobs. I wanted to do something I enjoyed, even if it meant forgoing a lucrative second career. My family was not so surprised – they knew how much I like telling a good story, and have been very supportive of my writing.

When my three teenagers were younger I frequently would put them to bed with an “instant” bedtime story. I’d ask each to come up with a random character (a fireman, a cow, a flower, whatever they wanted) and then I would weave a story together on the spot using the characters they provided. By the way, Pat O’Donnell does this with his two kids…I wonder where he got the idea?

MM: *laughs* Yes, I wonder! And do you see more writing plans in the future?

MA: Following the Child Finder trilogy I want to keep writing stories featuring Pat O’Donnell. I like the idea of “mentoring” my protagonist and watching over his fictional career, just as I enjoyed mentoring junior USAF officers when I was on active duty. I have many ideas in mind for this particular hero, many adventures he can go on – not just finding lost children – but other quests involving spies, terrorists, and dangerous criminals.

MM: Oh, I love, love, love that idea of involving him in all these espionage-filled, action-packed adventures! *whispers* Just make sure there's no more of that pesky female FBI agent, huh?

Now, one last question. I see you've already received fabulous reviews. Were you nervous to receive your very first one?

MA: Yes! Very nervous! I received an email from Armchair Interviews that simply said, “Your review has been posted.” Naturally I thought this meant it was a terrible review (otherwise they would have said, “Your fantastic, superb, glowing review has been posted,” right?). I was pleasantly shocked by the kind words and positive comments from the reviewer. As a debut author, this meant so much to me. The other reviews have been by some very senior professionals in the Intelligence Community – and they really enjoyed the story. One of them even told me before I sent the book that I had to accept what he said even if it was a negative review! I’m grateful he liked it.

MM: And where can our readers find you, and these suspenseful books?

MA: My main website, Amazon, new author story on the Mystery Writers of America, Rocky Mountain chapter website. International Thrillers Writers Debut Author Roll Call, Armchair Interviews, Military Writers Society of America (planning a feature story on me in its eZine--hopefully in June) Police Link (the Facebook of the law enforcement community).
I’m also on MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, and a few other smaller social network sites.

MM: Well, Mr. Bond...er, Colonel. I'm delighted to have you. Won't you start us off by sharing some background information?

SL: My bio is completely hum-drum, I'm afraid. I'm just an average woman living in the middle of nowhere who has stories floating around in her head!

I've had five books published, all with Whiskey Creek Press. They are Snowdance, Vineyard Mambo, Sniffing Sand, Legal Tender and the latest, Sandswept. I have two more scheduled for release later this year; Legal Tender is a historical romance and Timeless is a contemporary romance.

My short stories are published mainly by The Wild Rose Press. There are a bunch of them, as well as an anthology, and I've enjoyed working on each and every one.

MM: That is quite a number! With so many stories, how do you come up with the plots?

SL: There are always stories floating through my head. Voices that won't be stilled. People I have never met just screeching to tell a tale. Um...that's all normal, isn't it? *G*

MM: People you've not met, huh? How about some that know you, has anyone insisted you've written a character based entirely on them?

SL: No, but I've had a few people ask if they were so-and-so. Since none of my characters is based on an actual person, I can answer honestly.

MM: Do folks treat you differently when they learn you're an author?

SL: Nope.

MM: LOL, a short and sweet answer! So, okay, what was the best thing a reader told you about one of your books?

SL: That the hours flew by while they were reading. For me, it doesn't get any better than to know I've held someone captive, even if only in their mind and heart. Because, really, that's what writing's about for me...touching hearts with my words and hopefully entertaining at the same time.

MM: What a wonderful compliment! :) And when do you think you do your best writing?

SL: I don't know if it's my "best" writing, but I enjoy writing early in the morning, when the world is quiet and the only sounds I can hear are the voices inside my own head. Again, that's entirely normal, isn't it?

MM: If it isn't, then we aren't normal together, because that's when I like to write best of all too! :) I'm curious as to what you've found to be the best way to promote your books.

SL: Word of mouth. I hope that if I write a good story, readers might tell their friends who will tell their friends...

MM: Yep. Again, I agree. Get those buzz words moving and the cell phones ringing! But what about reviews? Have you received one that you considered totally off the wall?

SL: Thank goodness, no. I have been very fortunate to have received some wonderful reviews.

MM: Great! That's always encouraging, isn't it? Now, something the readers might find really interesting...What is your favorite book and why?

SL: Now that is a really hard question to answer! I am a huge Stephen King fan, so even though a lot of his characters aren't the warm, fuzzy type, I love them. He brings them so fully to life that even though I might not want to meet most of them, I can see and hear them, and that makes them "favorites."

MM: Oooh, Stephen King (shivers not quite too deliciously!). Do I dare ask what you're working on right now? (grins mischievously)

SL: Currently I'm writing a contemporary romance. It's going well, and I'm very much enjoying watching the characters struggle to find their way to happily ever after.

MM: Goody, no Stephen King stuff there...um, right? *Ahem*...Seriously, thank you, Sarita, for being my guest today. It's been fun!

SL: Thank you so much for having me. Vickery. Surviving With Love is her debut novel which was released May 1. Congratulations, and welcome, Rebecca!

We can see by this book cover that the story is already raising questions. Why don't you tell us a bit about it?

RV: Sure, Miss Mae, and let me start by thanking you for having me on your site. It’s an honor to be here.

Surviving With Love is a contemporary romantic adventure and is the story of Stacey Parker and Cord McConnell. She is an independent-minded wilderness guide and tracker and he is an ex-military hostage rescuer with an attitude. The two of them are forced to work together to save the victims of a deadly plane crash and there are problems from their very first meeting.

MM: With that expression on Cord's face, I can believe it! And, folks, listen to this blurb:

Sparks start flying when Stacey Parker meets ex-military hostage rescuer, Cord McConnell, and she begins to wonder if they will survive this assignment in the wilderness without killing each other.

Cord McConnell felt someone step from the woods. He wasn’t prepared for the sight of a young girl with a wild mane of strawberry blond curls who claimed to be his tracker. “I won’t wait on you if you fall behind and I don’t like whiners. I’m in charge and you do exactly as I say, regardless. Understand?”

“I won’t wait on you if you fall behind either, and whining is for dogs. You’re welcome to be in charge and I’ll follow orders when I agree with them.” She walked from the clearing without waiting to see if the man who sent her senses spinning would follow.

MM: Whoa! It's obvious that Cord means business! Rebecca, what gave you the idea for this story?

RV: It was the product of a “what if” moment. I heard a bit on the financial news about bearer bonds and on that same evening there was a plane crash. My imagination kicked into gear and began asking questions: “What if” there was a theft of bearer bonds and the criminals had a plane crash? “What if” the plane went down in a remote wilderness area? “What if” a female tracker was the only one who could find them? “What if” she had to team up with a real tough guy type while searching? And first thing you know I had a book. LOL

MM: Those are good some questions you asked yourself. Were there any times when writer's block hit and you had to ask, "why bother with this stuff"?

RV: Not with this particular book, though I am stuck on another one right now. I think writer’s block is the most frustrating thing I’ve ever experienced, next to child birth. LOL But with Surviving With Love, Stacey and Cord were so excited to tell their stories I could hardly get the words on paper fast enough. I had to carry a pad with me everywhere and was constantly writing this one until it was finished. There aren’t many that come this easy. And I have definitely asked myself why I bother. Then I shut off the computer or throw down my pencil and yell, “I quit.” But an hour or two later, I’m right back at it again. So, the reason I bother is that I just can’t help myself.

MM: I think that's called "writeritis" and a lot of authors suffer with it! LOL But I'm curious as to what your favorite genre and authors might be?

RV: My favorite genre is romantic suspense, especially if there are psychic elements tossed in. Kay Hooper is my all-time favorite author with her Special Crime Unit series.

MM: I'm with you on loving the romantic suspense! Since Surviving With Love is your debut book, what have you learned about writing/editing that's surprised you the most?

RV: How complicated it can get. Writing is simple, right? I always thought so. But it’s not simple as a professional because there are so many things to consider. Genre, sexual rating, word counts, point of view, character building, plot, location, plagiarism, and the list goes on and on. This doesn’t even begin to cover the series of edits our work is subjected to or the difficulties of promotions once the book is finished.

MM: Yes, I think we all discover that "other" world that exists beyond creating the story! If only it could be as simple as to do nothing but merely write. Ah, we writers love to write, don't we, otherwise we wouldn't do it! So, what do you love most about writing?

RV: As my grandfather would have said, I love to spin a yarn. LOL I do love telling a story that will bring enjoyment and maybe a few hours of escape to someone and leave them with a smile and a pleasant feeling afterward.

MM: Let's flip the coin. What do you absolutely hate about writing, if anything?

RV: The first thing would be not having enough hours in a day to write and the second would be having to cut scenes in editing.

MM: Talking about those scenes, have you actually lived through any comparable situations like those you create in your books?

RV: I definitely call on real life experiences in my writing. In my younger days, my husband and I camped and fished in some wilderness areas and we hiked a good bit. This first hand knowledge was invaluable when writing Surviving With Love.

MM: Yes, I'd say it came in very handy. To make the setting of a story believable, readers must see we authors know what we're talking about, either by our hours of research or, as you say, actually living and doing it.

Now, the question all we authors want to hear (other than, "can I offer you a contract"!)...If your book was a movie, who would you want to play the leading roles?

RV: Stacey Parker would be played by a young Nicole Kidman. Cord is a little tougher... a mid-thirtyish Robert DeNiro comes to mind.

MM: I do like Robert DeNiro, good choice! Okay, so for relaxation, what are some of your activities?

RV: I love to go RVing at the beach with family where I take long walks on the beach and fish. I also love reading and cooking.

MM: I love the beach too, that's a great way to clear your mind, and even find inspiration for upcoming novels! So now please share a bit of background with our readers.

RV: I grew up in Upstate South Carolina and have been married to the same very patient man for almost 34 years. We have one son and 3 beautiful grandchildren and a toy poodle named Dixie who thinks she is also a child.

I actually began writing my first novel in 1998. And though I’ve had several short stories and articles published, Surviving With Love is my debut romance novel.

MM: Well, thank you for joining me today, Rebecca, I've enjoyed it so much. I congratulate you again on the release of your book, and wish you many sales!

Here are a few places where Rebecca can be found. She's given permission for me to include it here.

Said the Spider to the Fly by Miss Mae

Genre: Suspense Mystery My Rating 5 of 5

I loved this little romance mystery!

Mona Murphy is a feisty, fiercely independent but troubled young woman. She returns to her home town upon the death of her grandfather and has to face her unhappy childhood and her troubled memories. She has always tried to hide the fact that she has been “cursed” with special gifts.

Preston Hitchcock is a charming, ruggedly attractive, mysterious “insurance agent” with a lady killer smile! He is trying to determine if the death of Mona’s grandfather, a few days after he purchased a large insurance policy, was truly accidental or perhaps suicide. Very quickly Mona and Preston begin to discover clues that indicate that her grandfather may not have been alone when he supposedly “accidentally” fell down the stairs.

While trying to chase down clues, Preston wants to protect Mona from advances by her ex-boyfriend and from the investigation. But independent Mona is going to search things out for herself and she keeps ending up in the wrong place as she narrowly escapes one attack after another. Clearly someone wants to stop her investigating but it sure isn’t clear who! The story twists and turns so it is hard to determine who can be trusted. Just when you think you have the death figured out, another secret pops up. I liked how the mystery keeps the reader off balance and guessing until all is neatly wrapped up in the end.

In addition to the mystery, there is a very sweet romance. Mutual attraction draws Mona and Preston together but they will have to get past the secrets they are each keeping and determine if they can accept each other as they really are. The story had an old fashioned feel to it that made me think of a more “genteel” era. These were lovely characters with a great murder mystery. A very wonderful read!

Thank you for the wonderful review, Martha! :)

Buy link here...

Miss Maehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17839767062468333921noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4569961111536341357.post-62496897902790557652009-05-03T08:27:00.002-04:002009-05-03T08:29:54.585-04:00Would You Like to be a Reviewer?Do you enjoy reading? Val is an avid reader and reviewer of romance books. Let's don't dally, but get right to it!

Sssh, sssh, please calm the applause, folks. Allow Val to speak.

*Val steps up to the mic because she's now so famous from being featured at Miss Mae's blog...ahem...*

MM: Tell our readers, please, at which sites you review.

Val: I review at You Gotta Read, Manic Readers, Long and Short Reviews and Whipped Cream. All of them are amazing sites!

MM: And how long have you been a professional reviewer?

Val: I've been an avid reviewer for about a year and I am loving every minute of it.

MM: It's wonderful to hear someone who loves their work! Although Val may not consider this work. I'm curious. What made you decide to review books?

Val: I love to read so one day I was looking for an opinion on a book and had read some reviews that were not so kind to the author but when I read the book, I LOVED IT! I thought, "That poor author is sitting there thinking their book stinks when it honestly doesn't." I started contacting authors and telling them what I thought about their book. Then surfing one day, I found Simply Romance Reviews. Julie, the owner, let me join the review team and from there I have been addicted! It is an amazing hobby (more like life, hobby is such a temporary sounding word). Simply Romance Reviews has since shut down but I will always hold it near and dear to my heart.

MM: That's super that you understood the author's feelings. I love a reviewer who has such a heart! So, do you have a set limit as to how many books a week you can get done?

Val: On a good week, I have read four 300+ page books and a few shorts. If they are all shorts, I can do probably 15. Of course when life intervenes, my book reading suffers but usually just in time that I do not burn out. I would hate to see the day when I could no longer enjoy reading.

MM: Fifteen books! Amazing! That's a real feat. Do you need any special kind of surroundings when you're engrossed in these authors' worlds? (other than what the author is creating, I mean!)

Val: When I am reading, a little bit of noise is ok. When I am writing the review, it has to be silent. I feel like if the author took so long to write the book, I can at least show enough respect to give them a thorough review. I always thought I could be the kind of person who would be listening to metal music or something and just rock on, but no, I must feel peaceful.

MM: Ah, I can certainly understand that. I know I need quiet when I'm writing because the least bit distraction will so abruptly--and rudely!--jerk me back to the present reality, which annoys me no end! And when you're busy at all this reading, I imagine it doesn't escape your family's notice. How do they react to your "addiction"?

Val: My husband is amazed at the amount of books and sites I read and belong to. He loves that it makes me happy and wonders why I don't have my own book out there. He brings it up in conversation a lot with other people he feels he must impress. Who am I to stand in his way right? lol My daughters love to read more than breathing so we usually sit down and read together (only not the same book!) lol My youngest daughter was recently home from school and asked me to show her what I do. I did so she asked if she could do what I do. She is now a reviewer of teen books and feels so very important. She will be a writer one day!

MM: Now that's what I call quality family time! You're being a great example for your daughters, and it's paying off. By now I'm sure you have a decision as to your favorite genre? Or least favorite?

Val: I love contemporary, suspense filled books that challenge my thinking. I have discovered a new love for Regency and I love some paranormal books. I do not really care for horror! I won't even watch scary stuff on TV. I will however read every genre at least once.

MM: I'm with you. I don't like horror, and won't watch it on television either! And there's too much violence for my taste too. What about plots? Which books, or authors, have made a lasting impression?

Val: The first book that came to mind was Debbie Gould's Infidelity. It's about a woman who is beaten and finally gets out of the relationship. She is reunited with a past boyfriend who just got back from the war. They are trailed by people who want to kill them and it was just an amazing book.

Another book that I cannot remember what it was called was about a woman and her daughter. Her daughter couldn't hear and the woman had gone back home to make it on her own. Someone keeps setting fires and her antique shop is one of them. The firefighter falls in love with her and the problems start from there. The firefighter guy, learns sign language just so he can talk to the little girl. How sweet is THAT?

MM: I have to admit, a man like that would steal my heart! :) Well, since these two are ones you love, have you come across any that, in your opinion, would make fantastic movies? Or, conversely, should some of them have remained hidden in the author's desk drawer?

Val: I don't think, I KNOW! There are sooooo many good books out there and I have read a few sweet romance books lately that I swear could turn into a Hallmark movie in a heartbeat. But then on the other hand, there are those that I have read that I wish I never had.

MM: Oh, I do so know that feeling! (laughs aloud). Now, one last question. What would you like to mention to authors that might help them to receive even better reviews?

Val: Have contact with the person who reviews your books and either thank them or if the book got a low rating, ask them why and how could the book have been made better. But do keep in mind that we are just reviewers and that is just one opinion. As a reviewer, I know you authors work very hard to get your books written and I truly do admire you for taking the initiative to make your dreams come true. If you get a bad review, don't worry, your next one might be totally different. Without you amazing authors, I would have no hobby (life).

MM: I think that's excellent advice, Val. If a reviewer has gone to the trouble to read our books, then we authors should definitely take the time to thank them for doing so. In parting, please tell us what else you do outside of reading/reviewing.

Val: I am a married mother of three to three brilliant minded, over achieving drama queens. I have seven dogs, two fish and a partridge in a pear tree which only comes out at Christmas. I was born in Durban, South Africa, moved to Las Vegas when I was 8, Kentucky when I was 19 and South Carolina (which is now where I reside) when I was 23. My parents weren't in the military, I really was just born in South Africa!

Thank you, Miss Mae, for taking the time to interview me, it was a blast! You authors rock and reviewers, high fives to ya!" I will be signing autographs from my limo!

* Val places the mic back on the stand while bodyguards rush her to the back door to avoid the paparazzi! *

MM: (calling in the midst of the mad rush)...Thank you, Val, and say hello to Oprah for me, won't you, please???

Miss Maehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17839767062468333921noreply@blogger.com30tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4569961111536341357.post-42282167544767790102009-04-26T12:46:00.004-04:002009-04-26T12:51:48.470-04:00The Sweetest Romance Debuts Tomorrow!
Authors of The Sweetest Romance Yahoo Loop will debut "officially" tomorrow at Dawn Roberts' Love Romance Cafe.
