How did you get started in your chosen craft?

I mostly sell vintage items these days. I occasionally recycle and respin cotton yarn. I'm going to focus on the vintage in this interview. When I was about 17 or 18 years old, I discovered thrift stores. It was simply economically wise at a time when I had little money. I soon fell in love with all things "old". I was hopelessly addicted from then on. I started wearing vintage clothing, collecting vintage ashtrays, house wares and furniture to furnish my home with. When I was 20, I fell in love with a store named "Heartbreaker" in Minneapolis. They were an upscale thrift store. Everything was clean, albeit still old and musty smelling (I love that smell by the way), it was all displayed nicely and their prices were a tad higher then the average thrift store, while still remaining reasonable to the average consumer. I swore to myself that one day I would own a store like that. I'm halfway there now.

How do you make your craft or etsy store eco friendly?

I think reusing items that have already been manufactured is simply the best way to be eco friendly, why buy new house wears when there's perfectly functional, and good looking house wears all around you that are often times cheaper. Don't we all win by doing it that way? I also use recycled packaging. Always. Sometimes it's a bit tedious because I have to actually make a box, but, in the end, it's worth it.

Why did you join the EcoEtsy Team?
I was looking for like-minded folks to hang out with within etsy. I hit the nail on the head there.

What steps have you taken to lead a green life style?

In our 2 bedroom home, which includes mama, papa, three daughters, two cats and a dog, we've eliminated all paper products except toilet paper, we've replaced it all with cloth, we recycle, grow veggies, compost, we use no gas/electricity to maintain our lawn, we buy used aside from groceries/toiletries 98% of the time, we use non toxic cleaners, and the list really could go on. If this world falls apart, it will not be my fault, that's for sure :)

What is the most eco-friendly purchase you have made?

For now, I have to say my reel mower. It was new, but from a local mom and pop shop and it saves SO MUCH GAS. That, and my rain barrel.

One of my favorite sites out there for easy tips on how to reduce our carbon foot print is Global Stewards.

They advise simplicity. Live simply, buy less things and own less things. The more you go through and simplify your life/belongings the more aware you will naturally become when you’re out shopping. You will start buying less without much thought.

While you’re simplifying your things, please send as you can to the landfill by donating it. You’ll be amazed at the stuff people will start hauling away when you slap it on your curb with a “free” sign.

Eco Tip of the Week: Iron it out

This just sparked on me today as my husband asked me to iron his shirt, just last minute before he goes to work. I realized, I'm not doing what I used to do when I was in the Philippines.

My grandma taught us to iron clothes in bulk. So growing up, my sisters and I were scheduled to wash our clothes (during that time--we washed clothes by hand) and usually the next day, we would iron the clothes.

Ironing the clothes in bulk saves time and energy. We normally do our ironing on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

It is best to start with the clothing that needs high heat, then turn off the iron for delicate clothing that only requires low heat. Another tip when ironing clothes ...sit on the chair and set the ironing board just at the right level when your sitting down on the chair. This not only makes your "ironing day" comfortable, it saves you from backache too :)

Now, I gotta schedule my "ironing day" this weekend.

Hello, my name is Juanita Rivas-Raymer. I'm married with two kids and we have two cats and a rabbit.

How did you get started in your chosen craft?

Starting out as a fine arts major, my art was mostly on canvas. When I had my kids, it became hard to paint because of the cost and space. When I learned how to crochet and knit, I found my quick fix. A few years ago, I decided I wanted to find a material that was plentiful and that I could repurpose. Its been a great three years of crocheting with plastic now.

How do you make your craft or etsy store eco friendly?

Well, I figure by crocheting with plastic grocery bags, I am keeping them from the landfill.

Whey did you join the EcoEtsy team?

A friend recommended I try Etsy and have been with Etsy since then. It's a great support group of artists from around the world. Months ago when I was surfing through Etsy, I saw a thread about this new group of artists that made mostly recycled art. Of course I joined immediately. There are a lot of great ideas that come out of this group and it's nice to know that if I need advice, they are there.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration?

My kids are very artistic too and like to give me advice. Actually, my 17yr old daughter helped a lot with the tutorial. She's quite funny. My kids also inspire me to try and help the environment so that they can live in a less poluted world.

Which piece in your shop is your current favourite?

My crocheted plastic fish always put a smile on my face. The expressions are just funny. I like funny things.

What are you currently working on?

I am starting to think of how I can make a figure out of the plastic. I'd like to start making bigger sculptural pieces.

What steps have you taken to lead a green life style?

I try my best not to throw things in the trash. If I can I will compost it or recycle it. I try not to buy stuff in plastic too. It is hard though.

Is your art/craft your full time job? If not what do you do to pay the bills?

Well, I do work on my art everyday because I have been selling my art at the local farmers market about twice a month. A side from that I am also a Birth Doula.

What do you do when you are not crafting?

I am usually in the garden. We recently took out the lawn in the back yard to put in food gardens. Never plant more than one zucchini plant. I have zucchini growing out of my ears!

What is the most eco-friendly purchase you have made?

I convinced my husband to buy milk paint for our front room. It looks great.

How about recycling your charitable donation money? Kiva is an organization that allows you to give loans to those in need. The loan is then repaid to you and that same money can then be loaned to someone else - over and over again! A minimum loan of $25 can go a long, long way in helping someone make a better life! Eco Tip of the Week: Searching for supplies?

Grab that umbrella!

As you may or may not know, I make many products from recycled circuit boards ( my DebbyAremDesigns shop) .

I need to wrap my items in bubblewrap to protect them as well as wrap the beads that I ship from my other shop ( EurekaEureka ) also in bubblewrap.

I approached a local store that sells a lot of china and glassware and spoke to the manager and explained what I made and why I do what I do,etc.

LONG story short - I was given permission to go 'dumpster diving' behind their store whenever I want and I get all the bubblewrap I want. TONS of it in fact.

It just blows my mind how much of it they throw out - and of course TONS also of styrofoam which we all know will never break down.

One day I was there dumpster diving ( they fill clear plastic bags with their bubblewrap and styrofoam) and I saw the biggest mother load of all mother loads in a bag waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay at the back of the dumpster. Figures, right?

I was determined to get it but had images of me falling into the dumpster ( of course my phone was in my purse in the car ) and decided that would not be a pretty scene. Luckily I had an umbrella in my car however so I was able to snag the biggest bag at the far back of the dumpster and got enough bubblewrap to keep us happy for a good few months!

So my tip I guess is - approach shops in your area who sell items that would most likely come in bubblewrap and ask if you can have it - then off you go to their dumpsters and remember to alway have an umbrella with you in case you need to snag something at the far back of the dumpster! LOL!

How did you get started in your chosen craft?
When I look at my current life as an Eco Artisan it is hard for me to define how I got started…my journey to being where I am today was tortuous and filled with great peril LOL. My love affair with recycled wool, recycled cashmere and gemstones evolved out of key experiences that shaped my sense of style and my desire to constantly create. I can sum it all up this way. Once upon a time there was a little girl whose mother was a compulsive knitter. She grew up surrounded by mountains of wool. She was dragged from market to market in Northern Italy to bargain for more wool and wool dyes and made to wear mostly beautifully knitted creations for the joy of her mother. However, the little girl dreamed of being a painter and selling her work on the streets of Paris and spent years covered with paint until later on she officially became a graphic designer and art director. She had by then moved to Southern California and had forgotten all about the lovely wooly sheep…until one day her beautiful and perfect son was born and history repeated itself. Now, I am the mother creating with wool and trying to make the world a better place…and putting to good use all the skills I had effortlessly acquired throughout my childhood. I started out by making all of my son’s toys and that evolved into making jewelry creations for other mothers and friends. The truth is, once I felted my first recycled sweater I couldn’t stop and could be found sleeping in front of my washing machine….

How do you make your craft or Etsy store eco friendly?
As far as my KarmaWool line is concerned, I mainly use recycled wool and cashmere that is either donated to me or bought at local Thrift Stores. I then felt my findings in a certified energy-saving washing machine. When dyeing my own wool I try to stay away from metal-based dyes in favor of plant-based. I almost always work with local suppliers and package my creations in recycled avocado wood I pick up during long walks with my son.
My jewelry line features natural brass, copper and silver and has all been tested to be free of nickel and lead! I recycle and reuse packaging whenever possible.

Why did you join the EcoEtsy Team?
I’d like to say that I joined the team to be surrounded by like-minded people and be inspired by all the amazing work but the truth is…it was that awfully cute bird!

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration?
Fashion, nature, old family photos, a scent, an impression, my son’s eyes and his contagious belly laugh! I find it ironic to have stashes of notebooks filled with specific ideas and projects but then, when I actually sit down to create, something entirely different happens. Now, some of you might call this “inability to follow a plan” but I just call it “creating by chance”…As a young artist I was mesmerized by Jackson Pollock’s pouring paint on canvases and letting chance direct the process.
The quality of the materials alone will inspire me and direct much of my process. I find that if I just listen to that wool sweater at the bottom of my pile she will talk to me and reveal her true purpose LOL. Oh, I forgot…all the incredible artists and artisan I have met through EcoEtsy and EtsyFAST and other teams!!! There is so much talent out there! These guys keep you on your toes!

Which piece in your shop is your current favorite?
I know, I know…we are supposed to love them all equally, but the truth is my heart skips a beat for Dudu the chocolate brown bear and my Dreaming of Capri jewelry collection…I might change my mind next month or tomorrow though.

What are you currently working on?
Summer seems to be the time to work on stocking the studio with newfound treasures, teach workshops, and generally plan ahead. I am trying to move downstairs where I have a bigger space available…so dreaming big!

What steps have you taken to lead a green life style?
I try to shop local, stay away from packaged goods, and not support companies that are known to hurt Mother Earth…I am very proud of my new energy-saving washing machine and the fact that we are currently installing solar panels. I drive a hybrid car.

Is your art/craft your full time job? If not what do you do to pay the bills?
It’s full time effort on part-time pay:) Thankfully I can rely on my partner to help make my dreams come true.

What do you do when you are not crafting?
You’re not implying I have any “free” time do you? Mmm… thinking about crafting and creating with that perfect sweater waiting for me in some yet to be discovered corner of the earth! I can otherwise be found running after my four year old and becoming completely absorbed in long conversations to explain why a car has round wheels and how it is that 99 is smaller than 100…you get the picture! I also like to cook, sing and play guitar and I am desperately trying to grow tomatoes!

What is the most eco-friendly purchase you have made?
My ready to be installed solar panels and my energy-saving washing machine.

Tizib's Green Tip: Home Made Moth Repellant

As lovely as they otherwise are, moths are NOT welcome in my studio. Can you imagine what would happen if they started feasting on my stashes of wool???

Here is what I do. After purchasing my sweaters, I immediately wash them in my lovely eco-friendly washing machine and add the following mixture to the final rinse:

1) One part water

2) One part pure essential oil of Tea Tree (about 30 drops for a full load)

3) One part pure essential oil of Lavender

4) One part pure essential oil of Peppermint

The lovely moths don’t really like these scents. In addition, I spray the same mixture in the studio using a spray bottle.

How did you get started in your chosen craft?
I was always into and crafts and arts. I love creating and bringing to life new ideas and products, especially if someone else can use and enjoy them. I also love and respect the world I live in, and want to do as much as I can to minimise the damage and harm I cause.
When I was 22 my grand mother gave me her old sewing machine. I was in University then, and used to experiment and make my own clothes whenever I found the time. I got more and more into it, and the rest is history…

How do you make your craft or etsy store eco friendly?
I use mostly fabrics that have been cut by other retailers and not used. This fabric pieces are 100% quality, and brand new, but usually would have been thrown since they don't fit the needed design. Working with those fabrics takes longer and demands creativity and improvisation. The result mostly can not be duplicated- each item has its own charm!
In a way handmade creations of all sorts are 'greener' then mass production - products I sell on Etsy are made per request, and therefore have a known purpose rather then join the countless number of products offered in shops.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere and in everything. It's just a matter of cleaning the channels of perception and observation. Someone told me once an artist or a designer is just like being a match maker - our job is to match an idea with the material, shape, color etc. I keep this image in my mind when I create and it makes me smile…

Which piece in your shop is your current favourite?
That is a hard one - it is just like asking a parent to choose his favorite child... they are all my babies, and I'm planning to bring more into life as long as I live!

What are you currently working on?
I'm always learning and developing my ideas, techniques and trying to match that to what people are looking for. It is a lovely dialogue and creating through Etsy has made it more possible then ever! I'm very thankful for that!

What steps have you taken to lead a green life style?
My awareness to the need to be environmental conscious started at an early age. I grew up in Israel, where fresh water is very precious and rare, and becoming more so every year globally.
My traveling around South America and India had opened my eyes to the huge wastage we are producing as humans. The fact is that our consuming society in the ‘West’ is far bigger then in the ’Third world countries’, but we usually know how to ‘hide it’ better…
My growing interest and knowledge in Yoga has taught me that every action we do and every thought we think affects the world we live in.
I am not living differently then most people. I would like to do more for our planet, and with time will. As for now I try to bring the change through the smallest actions in my everyday life, like reusing water at home as much as possible, trying to recycle as many products as possible and cut down on consuming things that are truly bad for the planet (like some plastic goods, paper, animal abuse and slaughtering etc.)

Is your art/craft your full time job? If not what do you do to pay the bills?
I am happy to say that it is shaping up to be my full time job. Apart from selling on Etsy I also sell in designer shops, in special designer events, and I teach yoga too!

Eladesign's Eco Tip: See the bigger picture

Being 'green' means we need to start realizing and understanding that we, individually, make a huge impact. Mostly a devastating one... Imagine walking in the busy city streets, seeing a big tank of plastic bottles. Now imagine seeing all these bottles lying around on the beach or in the forest. Sometimes the context of things really makes the difference. Suddenly we are aware of the results of our actions.

Eco Tip of the Week: Spin Cycle

Re-evaluating the use of home appliances – and the spin-off benefits for you.

Consider not having a clothes dryer. Use a clothesline outdoors and a drying rack indoors. Dryers are really hard on the longevity of natural fabrics. Your clothes will last longer and hanging clothes outdoors will get you outside more often.

Plan your computer use and switch off when you’re not using it. You will benefit from not having the distraction and you’ll be able to focus more on your work.

Stop or cut down on using a hairdryer. Your hair will love you for allowing it to air dry without that harsh heat destroying the natural oils.

Pull plugs when you’re not using your appliances, especially if you go away for a few days. This is recommended by most fire departments because plugged in appliances can be a fire hazard. You will also save on your hydro bill as they still use a small amount of electricity when plugged in.

Use small low energy lamps instead of overhead lighting whenever possible and put out lights when you’re not in a room. Overhead lights can be harsh on your eyes. Soft light is more calming and creates a beautiful ambiance in your home.

Use a push mower instead of a gas or electric lawnmower. You will get more exercise, create less noise and save money spent on gas.

Vacuum cleaners – Consider not having wall-to-wall carpeting. They need the use of a vacuum cleaner and harsh chemical cleaners to maintain. Carpeting harbors dust, mites and other allergenic particles. Carpets also off-gas chemicals, which are bad for your health and the environment. You will breathe easier without them.

Dena from Denarella Designs First Wholesale Order!

How did you get started in your chosen craft?

Denarella Designs was started in June of 2007. Being crafty has always been a part of my life – but with the help of my husband and family I finally took the full time plunge. My bags and accessories have just come to me from the materials that I have in my workroom. I am a mechanical engineer by degree so creating is second nature to me. I find that I really spend more time creating then actually producing, but I am working on that! Recycled felted sweater and thrifted fabric was just something I got into by going to the thrift stores often. For now I am working through my stash of fabric and sweater, and am curbing my resale store trips L But this is for the best.

How do you make your craft or etsy store eco friendly?

I believe that my store is eco friendly because I use items that I get from thrift or resale store and repurpose them into something new that people want. My favorite is using vintage bed sheets (ton of yardages of fabric) for lining of my bags. I also use recycled packing materials to wrap my products before shipping. My favorite right now, is using the air filled plastic bags that you get when you order something from the Internet as plastic bags to make sure that the items that I send make it to the destination safe and sound.

Which piece in your shop is your current favourite?

I think that it would have to be my Felted Wool whales. These cuties are created by unraveling a thrifted sweater to reclaim the yarn. I then crochet my pattern for the whale. He then goes for a swim in a hot wash cycle. I add eyes and a link and he is done! They are really cute and make a great gift!

What are you currently working on?

I have just started to push the wholesale of my items to retail stores. I have gotten a few wholesale orders from owners finding me on Etsy.com. So right now I am working on a wholesale order of 15 sling bags to be shipped to Trillium Gallery in North Carolina.

Is your art/craft your full time job? If not what do you do to pay the bills?

Denarella Designs is what I do full time. It still is not paying the bills, thank goodness for my husband, but I am much happier working for me than for someone else.

What do you do when you are not crafting?

In my free time I love to be with my golden retriever, Cisco. He is 3 years old, and a rescue from Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid Florida (http://www.grrmf.com). He got me into Assisting teaching agility to owners and dogs at a local dog club. He definitely is the “Teacher’s pet”. I also love to do Hot Yoga. This is my sanity for 90 minutes in a 100-degree room. It takes some getting used to, but I Love it!

What is the most eco-friendly purchase you have made?

I really try to make Eco- friendly purchases every day. I am known by name at most resale and thrift stores in town. I am able to find lots of fabric and notions that I use daily.

But my favorite eco friendly purchase is my envelopes that I use to send my items through the mail. I wanted to make sure that the eco idea was translated through to the packaging and spent a bit of time on the internet finding the best eco-friendly shipping envelope. I use Envirotech recycled envelopes which are 100% recycled with 40% post consumed content. I purchase them from staples.com (not available in stores). The envelopes have a great weight to them, and are dark brown, which I like. This is an easy way to ship green.

Eco Tutorial - Recycled Tags

I thought up this item around February, the busy birthday month of the year. I wanted a cute tag to add to my presents, but didn’t want to buy a card (Who saves cards anyway – especially when you just write your name in them). These are also great for a thank you note on your products.

Supply list:

· Discarded cereal box (destined for the recycling bin)
· Scrap fabric – from the bin (You know you have one!)
· Small piece of fusible web (I like Heatbond Lite)
· Sizzix BigKick Machine & Suitable die

Step One:

With your iron fuse the Fusible web to the printed side of the cereal box. I have cut my box to fit the size tag that I am going to make. A hot dry iron works best with a press cloth over the top of the fusible web paper. Just press enough to get it attached; you will press it again in the next step.

Step Two:

After it has cooled, remove the paper back from the fusible web. Place your scrap fabric on top of the fused cereal box sandwich. Now, with your iron, fuse them together. I use a hot dry iron and pressure to make sure it adheres. I find a 5 second count and then moving your iron to a new place works. If it is not all adhered, just press some more.

Step Three:

Using your Sizzix Machine and Die – place the fabric sandwich, fabric side to foam, in your sizzix machine with the cutting plates. Roll it through with steady pressure. It will be more work than paper cutting, but it will work!

Complete!

I add raffia to the created tag for tying. You can use your tag on any item to give it that great look.

DIY Seed Starting

Soilless Seed Starting Mix

I start all of our garden vegetables from seed. Some get seeded directly into the ground, while others get their start in flats. I make my own soilless seed mix. For one thing, it's a lot cheaper. But mainly, I just prefer to do it myself. I thought I'd share my recipe:

1/2 part spagnum peat moss or coir*

1/4 part perlite

1/4 part vermiculite

Mix and store dry. When you're ready to use it, put it in a container and add enough water, mixing as you go, until the mixture holds together.

*Coir is coconut fiber and can be substituted for peat moss. It also goes under the name of cocopeat.

If so, maybe you'd be interested in helping to run this blog! I'm going travelling this summer (France, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Hungary and Italy! Wow!) and doubt I'll be able to keep up with regular posting. I'm looking for a pair of helping hands that can run the weekly themed nominations (a Monday/Tuesday commitment) as well as the occassional late-week or weekend spotlight feature.
