Building on the success of the Family Fun world globe, DinoZ has introduced a new line of Children's Illustrated globes, which all come with illumination and a sphere size of 11 inches. The three models include the DinoZ World Globe which illustrate people, places, animals and many points of interest throughout the world. The DinoZ Animals World Globe specifically illustrates hundreds of animals found around the globe, and the DinoZ PreHistoric World Globe illustrates prehistoric animals. Each Globe includes a informational booklet that helps to identify the various illustrations.

Customer feedback to date on this new line is very positive, specifically surrounding the number of illustrations used, their size and easy identification. In addition the meridian and base are both constructed of metal and the base is weighted, which is a common complaint for similar globes on the market. Keep in mind that illumination does require location to a power outlet.

Overall the DinoZ globes are a great item for young children!

Limited Edition Everest Globe from National Geographic

Evoking the fires of inner Earth, glass blowers transform coarse sand into a glowing mass to create the globe's crystal sphere. Each finished Everest Globe is a piece of art, exhibiting slight variations in width, height and thickness to make it unique. After the spheres cool, artisans painstakingly adhere the intricate two-sided map to the glass. Only a few artisans remain who can produce a globe using this process. Trimming by hand, each section of the map is hand applied to the glass sphere until the world is complete. The final assembly of the map onto the glass sphere is then varnished and protected.

Wood for the Everest Globe base comes from the Black Forest. National Geographic called together a team of talented European woodworkers to build one of the most well made pieces of furniture you will ever own. A beautiful focal point for any room, the base glows with a deep gloss finish that highlights the carved detailing on the rim and legs. Carefully lathed, carved and sanded, and finished by hand, each Everest Globe base exhibits qualities of balance and design uncommon in today's world.

Delicate mother of pearl inlay graces the top of the base. From the depths of the ocean, they have chosen only the finest shells of non-endangered species to send to European artisans who specialize in heirloom-quality mother of pearl inlay.

The polished brass meridian encircles the Everest Globe. The ornamental meridian on the Everest Globe provides the globe with an elegant longitudinal circumference. It begins as a flat band of solid brass precisely calibrated every ten degrees by an expert engraver. It is then curved by hand around a wooden form creating a structure that is both flexible and strong. Once bent, the meridian is hand-rubbed and lacquered to a gleaming shine. A small brass knob on the horizon ring allows adjustment of the meridian, while a felted brass catch prevents the globe from turning too far in its stand.

Each Charter-edition Everest Globe comes numbered and dated. Only 250 globes will be made. Each will include a brass plaque engraved with the number of the globe, along with your personal inscription. It will also include a signed, numbered Certificate of Authenticity from the National Geographic Society.

Buying a High Quality Globe

Globes come in a large variety to choose from. Some of the most popular globes for home and office decor are those that have hand applied maps or gores. These models include many of the Columbus Globes that are made with a crystal/glass sphere and the higher end models from Replogle such as the Statesman, Finley or Diplomat.

The process starts with the sphere itself, either high grade acrylic or crystal. The next stage is the map. The map is is cut into several gores, then each gore is cut and hand applied separately to the sphere.

This process usually takes over 40 hours as it is done by hand and only trusted to those that have proven skills at various other production levels. Once the map has been applied to the sphere, several finishing coats are added to ensure the map does not fade or is easily damaged.

Models that have a wood floor stand take even longer in the production process as most manufacturers choose handcrafted wood vs importing mass produced stands.

You can call these the premier line for any manufacturer as it is a departure from the standard mass production line. If you are looking for heirloom quality, this is it!

How the Mova Globe Works

The MOVA globe rotates peacefully and silently using only the energy of room light and the force of the earth’s magnetic field. This is possible because the MOVA globe is actually an inner globe that rotates and is contained within an outer shell made of very clear acrylic that does not rotate. The thin space between the inner globe and outer shell is filled with a safe, perfectly clear fluid that buoyantly supports the inner globe completely out of contact with the outer shell. This inner globe, floating and turning in a virtually friction-free environment and energized by light, is analogous to the earth itself. The World of Globes

Being a fan of world globes, I thought that this would be a great opportunity for folks who share the same passion for both new and old world styles of globes to find a spot to share their interests as it relates to globes and geography. It is interesting to note that many world globe manufacturers including Replogle Globes based in Chicago, IL as well as Columbus Globes in Germany have been creating globes for close to if not over 100 years. Some of their original creations can still be found on some of the auction sites.

With most manufacturers catering toward mass production, it is becoming more difficult to find modern day examples of classic old world style. However, there are some new products that have recently made a presence on the market that are bringing technology into play with the creation of floating & levitating globes as well as the new Mova Rotating globe collection.
