I released an opinion on this same White Sox team on Saturday. It seemed as if they were in a good spot, but I was reluctant to release a major play on them until they showed some signs of life offensively. Today they get a shot at Cleveland's David Huff. Huff has struggled in three of his first four starts of the season. He has allowed 17 earned runs over 15 innings of work, while opposing teams are hitting .370 against him. Opposing teams are hitting .404 against him in his road games, and it seems as if he has not been able to get any lefties out. (.419 Baa) Huff will be opposed by Bartolo Colon of the White Sox. Colon has allowed a total of 4 earned runs over his last 4 starts, but has been the victim of a bad defense that has contributed to his high pitch count and low innings per game. Colon has pitched very well in his home starts and we are getting him at a very decent price against a struggling pitcher. By setting the total at 10, the lines makers are telling us that they expect a lot of runs to be scored in this game. With Colon pitching well at home, and Huff struggling in every category, this may be a breakout game offensively for the White Sox.

Despite, sub par numbers when traveling, Clayton Kershaw has been nearly unbeatable when pitching in Los Angeles. He has allowed 5 hits and 1 earned run over 14 innings covering two games. Both San Diego and San Francisco managed to hit an embarrassing .109 against him in those two games that resulted in Dodgers wins. Kershaw is coming off of his best performance of the year, pitching 7 innings of shutout ball against the Padres on Friday. He will be opposed by Washington's Daniel Cabrera. Cabrera has yet to win a game this season, and has had control issues at times. He will be called upon to stop a 6 game winning streak by the Dodgers, but in order to have a chance, must get more run support from the struggling Nationals. The Nationals are an ugly 2-18 over their last 20 road games, and 0-5 their last 5 games in Los Angeles. They may be hard pressed to stop the Dodgers from going 13-0 at home this season.

I am not quite sure what to make of Chris Young this season. The Padres pitcher has pitched well at times, then not so well at other times. He has two games where he went 7 innings deep without allowing a single run, then he has two games that didn't see him make it past the 3rd inning, allowing 15 earned runs in the two combined starts. Most of his troubles have come when pitching on the road, where he has a 9.88 Era in 3 road starts. To complicate matters , he has pitched better in his day starts vs his night starts. When pitching at night this season, he has a 12.08 Era to go along with 21 hits in 12 innings of work. Bad news Chris, this is a night game! Randy Wolf gets the start for the Dodgers. Although, no power horse so far this season, he has pitched respectably, keeping his team in the games he has pitched. He has given up 4 or less runs in his five starts this season, while getting to the 6th inning in all but one game. I would like for the Dodgers to have better numbers against right handed pitching, but a .281 batting average and 5.29 runs a game vs righties over their last 10 games doesn't seem so bad as compared to how bad the Padres are hitting lefties. The Padres are hitting .213 and scoring 1.70 runs a game vs lefties this year, despite the success they have had so far. The Dodgers are a perfect 5-0 their last 5 games at home, and will be facing a Padres team that is 1-6 over their last 7 games over all, as well as 1-7 over their last 8 when playing on the road against the Dodgers.

Yes, this is a little more chalk than I normally like to lay, but I believe it's worth the risk with Pettitte on the mound for the Yankees. Pettitte has pitched well in both of his starts this season, both of which were on the road. He gets his first start in the new stadium against an Oakland team that is hitting .185 vs lefties on the road this season. To add fuel to the fire, Oakland will be starting Dana Eveland. The A's have won both of Eveland's starts, but the numbers are deceiving. Opposing hitters are batting .348 against him, and he has given up 16 hits in only 10 innings pitched. While the Yankees have struggled against righties in their new park (.221 BAA), they have had no problems hitting vs lefties(.324). Welcome to the new stadium Dana Eveland. Yankee's should put up an abundance of runs tonight.

#546 Auburn Tigers -5 1/2

Seems like the lines makers keep trying to compare this years Vanderbilt team to the Vanderbilt teams of the last couple of seasons. Their mistake! Vanderbilt has fallen to 1-5 in the SEC Eastern Division, and they have fallen because of key losses at home. Last season they were a very impressive 19-0 in home games, and although you don't expect that run to continue forever, you do expect better than a 11-4 home record, and most certainly didn't expect them to lose at home to a mediocre Illinois Chicago team.

The Auburn Tigers are an impressive 11-2 at home this season. They stumbled in their second game of the season, losing to Mercer by a 74-78 score, and lost by three points to Florida on the 14th of January. They have won three of their last 4 games, with perhaps the most impressive being a 73-51 win on the road at Arkansas last Saturday. The Tigers are led by Junior Guard DeWayne Reed who is averaging 14 points a game. Senior Forward Korvotney Barber is second on the team with 12 points a game, and also leads all Tigers with 9 rebounds per contest.

A big part of this game will be how well Vandy defends against the 3 ball of Auburn, and at this point Auburn holds a clear advantage. The Tigers are hitting 34% of their three's over their last 5 games, while Vandy has shown that they can't defend the three point shot, by allowing opposing teams to connect on 40% of their shots over their last 5 games. Vandy is under a lot of pressure to get things turned around in the SEC, and will certainly be in trouble after today's loss.

Sacramento has had no problems coming into Conseco Fieldhouse and winning. In fact they have won 4 of the last 5 games in Indiana straight up. Now both teams will be trying to end consecutive losing streaks. Sacramento has lost 9 straight games when traveling, while Indiana has lost 4 straight at home. Sacramento lost a close game to Detroit on Friday night, despite having leading scorer Kevin Martin back in the lineup from an ankle injury. Martin went 4-15 from the field in his first game back, but should improve upon those numbers against an Indiana team that is ranked 27th in points allowed this season. Let's take the points with a Sacramento team that plays well in Conseco Fieldhouse.

If you are not familiar with the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, you do not know what you have been missing. This Challenge features some of the elite teams from both leagues going at it night after night with the winner being decided after 11 games have been played. The ACC has won EVERY Single Challenge dating back to its inception in 1999. Wisconsin has went 3-6 against ACC schools in the Challenge, while Virginia Tech has went 1-2 against Big Ten competition in the Challenge.

Wisconsin puts a 5-1 record and #25 ranking on the line against a Virginia Tech team that is 4-2 on the season. Wisconsin has been getting its wins by smothering opposing teams on defense, and playing just well enough on offense to put themselves in winning situations. They have played one ranked opponent in Connecticut(#2) losing that game by a score of 57-76. Wisconsin is led by Junior guard Trevon Hughes who is averaging 14 points a game, and Joe Krabbenhoft who is averaging 7 rebounds per outing.

Virginia Tech is also playing very efficiently on defense, with only one opponent(Seton Hall) shooting over 39% from the field against them on the season. They are led offensively by Sophomore Forward Jeff Allen and Senior Forward A.D. Vassalo both who are averaging 17 points a game. Virginia Tech has yet to play a ranked opponent, but both of their losses came against basketball powerhouses Xavier and Seton Hall, by a combined total of 5 points.

Wisconsin has a young team that is a work in progress. They will only get better with each game that they play. This young Badger team may be overwhelmed having to come into the Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia in a Nationally Televised ESPN event. Virginia Tech gets win #1 for the ACC in the Big Ten/ ACC Challenge.

Both New York and Miami are opening the season with new head coaches, both are coming off of very disappointing seasons, and both made key player acquisitions in the off season. New York added Donnie Walsh as team president late last season, he then added Mike D'Antoni in the off season as the Knicks new head coach. Miami's Erik Spoelstra will be making his NBA head coaching debut for the Heat. He not only is the youngest NBA head coach at 38, but he is also the first Philipino-American head coach in the history of the league. He started out as a Video Coordinator in 1995 and worked his way up through the ranks to a head coaching job. The Heat will be counting on Dwyane Wade to carry the team on his shoulders. After Wade, the talent level falls off, with Marion and rookie Beasley expected to make huge contributions. New York has several offensive minded players to throw at Miami, including Zach Randolf, Nate Robinson, and Jamal Crawford. The Knicks problems will be on the Defensive side of the ball, where they may be lacking at times on defense. Not to worry, Miami will be in the same boat so to speak. Miami managed just 15 wins last season, and although I expect them to be better this year, I don't see them being able to go on the road and pick up their first win of the season against this New York team that has went 5-1 straight up against the Heat the last 6 times these teams met. The Knicks definitely have a coaching edge, and although they don't have a Dwyane Wade type player, they do have more talent across the board.

I have to lean with a Saints squad that has put up 32,31, and 27 points a game over their last 3 contests, and those games had much better defenses than they will face today. Oakland has scored 23 or less points in 4 straight games, while their defense has given up 24 and 28 to San Diego and Buffalo in their last two outings. Oakland's JaMarcus Russell is playing just well enough to give the Raiders a chance to win. He has thrown for 4 touchdowns and just 1 interception, with just 668 yards through 4 games. His counterpart, Drew Brees has thrown for 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions and a eye popping 1673 yards with through 5 games. New Orleans won every statistical category in last Sundays game but one, and that is the one that matters most in all ball games, the turnover margin. New Orleans lost by a field goal to the Vikings, despite being a -4 in the turnover margin. If they lose four turnovers today, they will lose again, but I don't see it happening against this Raiders defense that has given up 24 or more points in 3 of its four contests.

This is another one of those games that sharp money has effected in a huge way. Nearly 70% of the Public is on Tennessee in this game, but yet the Lines makers had to move line off of the 3. This is yet another clear indication that the sharp money is on Baltimore. Tennessee comes in with a solid 4-0 record, while Baltimore is 2-1 after falling apart in the 3rd quarter last week against the Steelers before finally giving way in a 23-20 overtime loss. Both of these teams are very good on the defensive side of the ball, and are at the tops in defensive numbers in both points and total yards allowed. Look for Baltimore to continue to try and run the ball and keep Flacco in 3rd and short situations. Flacco looked good on the road at Pittsburgh last week, getting his first touchdown pass of the season, and should settle in now. He was sacked 5 times last week and will face a fierce pass rush from Tennessee. The Ravens defense sacked Big Ben 3 times last week and should be able to put pressure on Titan quarterback Kerry Collins. The Ravens are 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 home games, while the underdog has cashed in 13 of the last 16 times these two teams have faced each other. I like our chances with the home team underdog with a very strong defense.

#220 Pittsburgh Steelers -5 1/2

Two rock solid defenses face off at Pittsburgh tonight. On the offensive side of the ball, we have rookie Joe Flacco going against a Steelers defense that is allowing 13 points a game, while the beat up Steelers and Big Ben try to get things going against a Ravens defense that is giving up 10 points a game. Steelers tailback Willie Parker will not be starting this game. In his place will be rookie Rashard Mendenhall. This will be Mendenhall's chance to shine, and I look for a big effort from here in this Monday night matchup. Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 8 times last week in Philadelphia, and has went down 12 times for the year, and this is definitely an area for concern. His counterpart, Flacco has problems of his own. Besides being a rookie, he has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season, and will be facing a Pittsburgh defense that has 6 interceptions this year. The question here is, who has the best chance of succeeding? I will lean with a Pittsburgh team that has experience at the quarterback position. Even should Roethlisberger goe down, Byron Leftwich should be able to step in and play respectably. Let's not forget that Pittsburgh has won 13 straight Monday Night home games dating back to 1992, and the home team is 4-1 against the spread the last 5 times these teams have faced off.

#962 New York Yankees -135

The Yankees still have a slim chance to make the playoffs, and in order to keep their shimmering hopes alive they must keep winning. They have won two in a row, but now have a series at home against a pretty good White Sox team that is also still battling for the playoffs. The White Sox and Twins are battling back and forth for the lead in the AL Central, with the White sox holding a slim 1 1/2 game lead after yesterday's double header sweep over the Tigers. The Yankees trail Boston by 9 with 13 games remaining for the American League Wild Card. The Yankees will send Alfredo Aceves to the mound for only his 2nd start of the season. Aceves allowed 1 run over 7 innings in his first career start against the Angels on Tuesday. He did pitch 5 innings of relief on the 4th of September, allowing 1 run over 5 innings in a loss to Tampa Bay. Aceves will be opposed by Mark Buehrle of the White Sox. Buehrle has allowed just 1 run over his last two starts while allowing just 10 hits which resulted in two White Sox victories. Even though he has pitched well of late, Buehrle has struggled when going against the Yankees. He has a 6.58 career Era against the Bronx Bombers, and the Yankees have a lifetime batting average of .329 against Buehrle. The White Sox also struggle when playing at Yankee Stadium, going 1-5 in their last 6 games in New York, while the White Sox are 0-4 in Buehrle's last 4 road starts. The Yankees are familiar with Buehrle, while the White Sox haven't seen Aceves, and it may take them several times through the rotation to before they chase him out of the game.

#103 Kansas Jayhawks +3 1/2

3-Units (7:00 P.M. CST) (ESPN)

I see lots of similarities between these two teams. Both have smothering defenses, Junior Quarterbacks, and programs that overachieved compared to previous seasons. Kansas has not allowed a team to score an offensive touchdown this season, while South Florida has allowed just two touchdowns, both coming in the final 4 minutes of their overtime victory last week over Central Florida. When I see two solid defenses going at each other, and one team hasn't allowed a touchdown on the season, I tend to take the points with the underdog. Yes, I know that Kansas hasn't really played a strong schedule to start the season, but neither has South Florida. While South Florida will have an advantage rushing the ball, I have to think that Kansas will have an advantage moving the ball through the air. Kansas Quarterback Todd Reesing has completed 77% of his passes on the season, throwing for 6 touchdowns and 1 interception. South Florida signal caller Matt Grothe is also efficient, completing 60% of his passes on the season while throwing for 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. The Kansas defense will have their hands full when Grothe is under center, as he tends to run the ball about 12 times a game. This should prove to be quite a game, but look for it to be a close game that may go down to the final few minutes, and getting 3 or more points may prove to be pivotal.
