Breaking News: Action Force FC off bottom of the table!!!
With a hard fought 1-1 draw in a game dominated by the defences Action Force FC, led by Big Dave at the heart of their defence, rose two places up the league ladder and off the bottom of the table for the first time this season.
AJ's came away with a well earned point against Weighton, however Weighton were left to rue the fact that they just simply didn't shoot when they created good chances. Martin, stuck in goal due to his dodgy calf, was not best pleased - bring back Shanunessey rang round the arena at the end of the match. AJ's were also missing the man up front. Hopefully for AJ's, Nick will be back next week for a tough game against the Trogs, who are yet to concede a goal this season.
Waterside continued their impressive run with a strong 5-2 win over NVA. Danny Moore bagged another 3 goals, taking him to 10 in 8 matches.
ONE10 and Real Soldierdad played out a fast paced scoreless draw. Unfortunately the only thing missing was a goal. I'm sure Carl Springy will look to stop the rot once he returns.
BarceHullona continue to quietly move up the table. This week they cast aside the chants of "1-0 to the BarceHullona", by netting 2 goals which secured all three points and a move up into 4th place.
Trogs also kept to the form book, comfortably beating a HUGE Angel squad 3-0. Bragging rights were back in Kev Neale's hands after netting his fourth of the season, taking him 2 goals clear of counterpart Dave Weatherall - with that being said, Kev is a bit of an Andy Cole and needs a dozen chances to bag one!

Finally from me, Wed is 11 November and I would like to say thanks to all the troops that have fought, continue to fight and are training to fight for this country and each of us. There have been a lot of young soldiers come through Soccer Sixes since Kev put his first team in almost a year ago, a lot of good lads, a few of whom I dare say are away fighting now, and seeing the sacrifice that these guys make, particularly at this time of year with the media coverage, really makes me appreciate how important our forces are and how much these guys give up and put in for us. I don't like or agree with the war, wouldn't guess that many of us do, but I'm fully thankful for the effort that our forces put in and the sacrifice they make.

2 Write ups for the price of 1!

Jay's write-up (last week, when we weren't there):
Once again Weighton dominated their game, creating heaps of chances and scoring four goals to keep them top of the pile. Bennet added another 2 to take him up the scoring charts, with Atkinson and Cox also adding to their goals from last week.
Real Soldierdad got back on track with a very impressive display against Deportivo. slick passing, hard work and good finishing saw the boys take home all three points - that's what you get for paying in 5's and 10p's Deportivo!!!
BarceHullona left with their faces covered, after conceading 3 goals and dropping 3 points to a team with only 5 men - OH DEAR. On the flip side, well done AJ's, another couple from Nick who continues to impress, and a great win - maybe Blakey should work away more often?!
Waterside crused to a 3-0 victory over ONE10, with Danny Moore bagging another brace. I must note here that ..., the ONE10 keeper made probably THE bast penalty save ever (well, he saved it anyway), however, he still hasn't learnt that keepers arn't allowed out of the box!!!
In the final game Reservoir Trogs left with another 3 points, another 6 goals, another clean sheet and another glaring miss be Kev Neale - (Sorry, I had to mention it) Clean through on goal for a hat-trick, Kev managed to screw the ball at least 15 feet wide of the goal, leaving the keeper, his team mates, and those watching, in floods of tears at the hilarity of the finish!On a serious note, things are getting worse for Action Force. Big Dave will surely have to mix things up a little when he returns next week.

Weighton bounced back from last weeks loss with a comfortable victory over Real Soldierdad. New boy Tim Atkinson added to early goals from captain Coxy and Bennett - not so sure about the ladies neon leggins fellas, may have to bring a ruling in about them!
AJ's got back to winning ways against Action Force, who a still struggling to find their feet. I think a goal that flies in off somwones backside is urgently needed to kick start these boys.
Deportivo continued their steady start to the season, recording a good win over the Black Sox, with Firth addidng his forth of the season, and Andy Galloway finally getting on the score sheet!!!
One10 marked their first win of the campaign with a close fought victory over NVA. Talk from the touchline suggested that NVA could have taken the points after a solid display, but a lack of goals cost them what would have been some well earned points.
The biggest tale of the night was the return of Danny Piwinski; the man who currently holds a league winners medal, a league runners-up medal, and two cup winners medals. Dan stepped out in a cameo appearance for BarceHullona, however, it wasn't the appearance which caused the biggest news? Rumor has it that many years ago Dan refused to purchase a sprig of heather from a gypsy women, who subsiquently placed a curse on him, meaning he would never score a goal throughout the whole of his footballing career. After watching him for two full seasons at Soccer Sixes, it was clear it was a curse of Dumbledore strength, as Dan's finishing resembled that of a blind horse, wearing high heels, playing on a pitch of custard, shooting into a goal the size of a matchbox. However I was told prior to kick of last week that Poo had searched far and wide for the gypsy woman, and had actually bought enough heather from her to cover the North Yorkshire moors, in the hope she would lift the curse - it obviously did the trick, as the big story this week was his goal, which he stroked home beautifully from the edge of the box to net the win for his new team. Weather this newly found scoring prowess continues, only time will tell - welcome back Poo!

I'll leave it to Jay to do the proper match report but I think I should add that we were awesome second half and I think that if we can play like that every week a top four spot isn't out of the question.
Rob K blasted his way back to the top of our goal scorers leaderboard with a hatful of one goal. A few more next week and he'll be on Jay's top scorer leaderboard. (Then again a couple of goals for any of us could get our name up in lights)

After a promising start to the season, Deportivo looked favourites to take the points against NVA. However, NVA proved a little trickier than expected and it was a case of yet another draw for the boys in red - Andy 'Gal' Galloway will surely be pulling his (beautiful quaffed Torres style) hair out when he hears this result. I must add that I predicted NVA would be a changed team when natural keeper and captain, Will, returned... and once again I was correct!
The Trogs goal fest continued with another 6 against a good strength Black Sox team. Big man Wade smashed home a couple to take him Joint top in the scorers chart. The one disappointment was the performance of Trogs skipper Kev Neale. From what I'm told (by reliable source Dave Wheatherall), his performance both outfield and in goal left an awful lot to be desired; in fact if it wasn't for Dave's amazing defending in the second half, Black Sox would surely have taken the points - Dave £5 next week please pal!
With only 3 men on the pitch one minute before kick off, AJ's looked like they could be in trouble against Real Soldierdad. As it turned out, even a full team of six at kick off time couldn't prevent Real leaving with three points. The pace was fast, passing crisp and finishing spot on - perhaps we have another contender for the Championship. Next weeks match between the Trogs and Real should be game of the week.
Action Force v Angel was a match that never reallzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - BORING!!!
Andy Martin continued his comeback for BarceHullona and looked pretty good with the ball at his feet. The problem came when he had to run (ha ha) or try and shoot (ha ha ha) - how many one on ones pal? Gaz Marshall did manage to net for BarceHullona, but One10 looked on top throughout, and took the points in front of a small crowd, to show Trogs and Real that they are a serious challenge.
The final game saw the top two teams as it stood at the start of the night, going head to head. Weighton had some good early possesion, and created a couple of chances, but Waterside looked comfy all night. Solid defending at both ends restricted chances, but after a goal from captain Phil Clark the game began to open up, and Waterside began to create more. With a few minutes remaining striker Danny Moore took hold of the ball on half way and beat two defender before slotting past the Weighton keeper (no easy feat), to confirm the win, and take his side top of the pile.

P.P.S The website has had a total of 2,490 visits from 660 unique visitors. (none more unique that you, Dave) with a peak of 38 visitors on the 30th April 2009 (the day after we won our first match). These visitors came from an amazing 60 different countries!

Week 3 - Full roundup with some very intelligent remarks from Jay

Real Soldierdad put in an impressive performance in their first match, sinking the rejuvenated Angel, who this week boasted 10 players! However, controversy was in the air after the first goal, with angel believing the ball was actually out of play before the striker smashed it home via the keeper. Captain Rich Bell raged "Maybe one week we'll actually get a decision off (referee) Uzzell" - I wouldn't hold your breath mate!!!
Waterside continued their impressive start with a good win over AJ's, in what looked a pretty physical match. Danny Moore added another 2 goals to his tally, and has so far scored in every match - I can see Martin having a chunk out of his ankles early on next week.
BarceHullona finally got the ball rolling with a good win over Action Force FC. The old predator Chris Robertson was on hand to snatch the only goal of the game, rolling back the years to when he was one of Europes most... I don't really know where I'm going with this! I was just shocked to see him turn up to football with the temperate below 10 degrees!
As I predicted last week, big Kev stepped back into the Trogs line up and made an immediate impact. A couple of early goals, included another controversial penalty decision from Uzzell seemed to knock the wind out of the NVA boys, and the trogs took advantage, smashing home 7 goals.

Personally, I think it would have been a different story if NVA skipper Will had been between the sticks. His athleticism and agility have proven to be a match for any top striker in the league in recent weeks, and he was sorely missed -

Will, your the winner of the 'Pay Jay a fiver for a big write up' competition this week by the way.
Deportivo were solid again and had a couple of good chance to win the game. Young Firthy bagged his second of the campaign with a powerful finish; or was it really dodgy goalkeeping? I can't remember? (Sarcasm)
Finally, Weighton made it three wins from three with a very comfortable victory over the Black Sox. Without top scorer Tom Shaunessy, Weighton lacked the finishing edge until captain Cox put the keeper gloves down at half time, and showed the rest of his boys how it should be done.
Next week sees Weighton v Waterside in what should be a very competitive and high quality match - let's just hope I've not said too much too soon.

Todays (240909) thursday kickabout has been aborted due to a combination of work commitments (5.30 meetings) and injuries (tom and Daves poor feeties). Because the kids are back at school and they, for some reason, get more rights over the pitch than us our slot has been moved. The kickabout will continue on the same day next week, thursday, but will from then on be in a 8 - 9 slot, so we'll be playing under the lights, which seems cooler for some reason. See y'all there,

Notvery Athletic - the second season

First of all a farewell and big thankyou to Rob K who joined us last season. He will be sorely missed in midfield and and in front of goal (10 goals last season) and his loss will also lead to a serious reduction in our spm (stepovers per minute).

Second farewell to Rob G who has put his continued education before Notvery, a decision which i'm sure he spent many hours considering. He has offered to come back every wednesday on the train if Notvery can stump up the £30 train fare.

Third farewell to Colin. he has been with us since the very beginning and his long hopeful runs down the wing will also be missed. He is, however, still attending our thursdays kickabouts so that's where to head all you autograph hunters.

Match summary:

we were playing AJ's, a team that last year soundly drubbed us 4 nil in a 7 minute cup match so tonight's 0-0 result shows how far the team has come. We took up a rather brave and unorthodox 2 1 2 formation, which was almost a 2 2 formation as Chris Harley was having transport issues, his lady friend having run off with the car, eventually though he arrived and we kicked off. Although they had more of the ball we did have several chances, the best of which from Rob G who hit a good shot with his left foot but the keeper saved. Most of their attempts were reasonably hopeful and were often bravely blocked, a feature of our very good defending as a unit and with Rob G and Dave B upfront we were causing them some problems.
Second half we were a little more under the cosh but their shots were again mostly hopeful strikes on easy saves for the keeper. Up front an interesting back spinning back clip kinda pass thing from Chris H, a move never before attempted, dipped over the defence towards Rob G but it was a little to awkward for him and his shot sailed over. A powerful strike from paul B also forced their keeper into a good save. As the game drew to a close they were piling more men forward, obviously expecting to take the three points and they were getting closer to scoring but our defensive unit held together and we gained a well deserved point. Incidentally that should put us around mid table, which is our highest ever position in the league. A good start methinks.

Jays weekly roundup:

Waterside United started the season strongly against new boys Action Force FC. New boys Brad Palin weighed in with a brace, while Danny Moore added the third, fresh on the back of 11 games already this week! (maybe a slight exageration). With Sami also due to return, (my) pre-season favourites are looking strong.
Not Very Athletic continued the growth from whipping boys into a competant side with a draw against AJ's. However, it must be said that AJ's may get charged to replace the goal posts, after smashing balls against them all night.
Deportivo frustrated a weakened Reservoir Trogs and had several good chance to win the match, but once again the words ' cow's arse' & 'shit shovel' spring to mind!
New boys ONE10 didn't live up to their cup promise of last week, going down 1-3 against a solid Weighton. Once again Tom Shaunessey stepped up with a couple of tidy goals - could be a good bet in the top scorer stakes this season.
Black Sox and Angel played out a fairly close game, with plenty of decent chances for both sides, but stronger defending, particulalrly from big Craig Eastwood saw Angel come out on top. Up front, the pace of Marcel (Marso) Veli proved very telling, with a great finish for what proved to be the winning goal.
Rumor has it that the final new team to make their debut, Real Soldierdad, are looking very strong. They make their first appearance next week against fellow new comers Action force FC, and BarceHullona are also back next week, with Andy Martin determined to take the top Scorer trophy home this season - if he can stay fit long enough!!!

Jay's Season round up

Here's the offical season roundup written by none other than the man himself, Jay Including two mentions for the mighty Notvery! Good Lad.

Both the league and cup were dominated by Shanghi, who took 57pts from a possible 66 in the league, losing only once, and who retained the cup knockout trophy for the second straight season. (we'd have had that cup, if it wasn't for the 5 games on the trot-ED)

Reservoir Trogs (2nd), Weighton FC (3rd) and Waterside United (4th) all pushed hard in the league, with Waterside UTD also finishing the season as runers-up in the cup, losing out on penalties in the final after a very close game (and some dodgy decisions by the ref - Joking Uzzell!!!) (Probably the same ref that gave Rob K's crazy sending off, it was just a little hug. - ED.)

Down at the bottom end, the match of the season was, without doubt, the first game between Black Sox v Not Very Athletic. After several miss kicks, plenty of comedy control and 10,000 wasted chances, NVA managed to nick the only goal of the game with the very last kick. I have never seen such joy and despair in the same place at any one time! (does that make Chris G's goal the goal of the season?-ED)
Best quote of the season also came from NVA, who excited proclaimed they had "hit our target of finishing with better than -50 goal difference"!!!
The new season of Soccer Sixes kicks off on Wed 16 Sept, with three new teams stepping into the action. Unfortunatley Shanghi will not be returning to defend their titles - all the best fellas, thanks for the past couple of season and I hope we see you up here again. (Darn, no more 8 nil drubbing for us, shame. - ED)

Hi all,
tonights(02/09/09) game is the last of this season, this means I need to have sign ups for next season, which starts almost straight after this, as I have to fill in a form and everything. Please let me know whether you wish to continue creating history with the long standing Notvey Athletic or whether you wish to quit cos you can't take the pressure. Cost of the season depends on the number of squad members and number of opposition teams in the league but should be around the £26 mark.

Tonights game is a 7.30 kick off vs Angel, who we should drub.

A new enemy - Everybody was-a kung foo fighting

This weeks training was a huge success, mainly due to the presence of an unexpected opposition. Another group of guys also book a pitch at the same time we do and offered us a 2/3 of the pitch match with proper big goals and everything. We bravely took up their challenge and finished with our heads held reasonably high with a 9 - 6 defeat. Considering a lot of our 10 man team hadn't even met each other before and several others hadn't kicked a ball since our last longcroft training sessions this seemed a reasonable result.
A hat trick for Rob Gibbesson, our defender, and goals from Dave Brinham and others were the highlights with some excellent saves from our, apparently resident, goalkeeper giving the crowd something to oooohhhhh at.
Next week may well be more of the same, dependent on numbers. So let's get back at them and reverse that score!

Longcroft now has 18:00 slots available on tuesday, wednesday, thursday or friday nights. £20 for a third of a pitch if I remember rightly. Personally I think thursday would be the best day. Whos in and what day would you prefer?

On form NVA robbed of second victory on the bounce

I have been rather lax of late when it comes to the creation of insightful and humourous footie blogs but the performance by the boys tonight greatly deserves my return from the blogging twilight. Chris G, Chris H, Paul B, Rob K, Dave B, Tom M and myself looked a reasonable team on paper, a little more defensive that our teams have been of late but still with some proper talent. However we proved that if you work as a team and know what you are trying to do a team can be far greater than the sum of it's parts. Our recently history, however, has been mostly the opposite to that philosophy.
We began defensively, with plenty of people behind the ball for change and although they had more of the ball any shooting attempts were from range and none troubled the keeper. At the other end of the pitch we were looking dangerous and we soon realised that a counter attacking system really worked for us and this was the system to which we stuck.
Long balls from the keeper were also proving useful, with Dave holding it up well and a one on one chance from him was well saved by the keeper.
as the half continued they began to tire from trying to break through our solid defence, including some excellent blocking all round especially from Tom and Paul, the latter even clearing with the clever use of his left ear. We soon took advantage of their fatigue and frustration with a very well worked goal which, I believe, was touched by every NVA player on the field, involved some excellent cross field balls and a very well worked finish by Rob K to even further cement his position as leading scorer (except for my 5 goals from the other week of course).
For the second half we still looked very solid at the back with not a single one on one for them for the whole of the match, a first for Notvery, and their attempts on goal began to peter out with any they did manage being from long range, perfectly represented by a shot which ended up a fair few feet into the undergrowth outside the 10 foot high cage wall.
our counter attacking system continued to prove fruitful and we had a couple of chances to further our lead before, half a minute from the end, a well struck but hopeful shot from probably their better player screamed out of a crowd of players and nestled in the top right corner.
when the whistle blew I , and all the other players, had the rather unusual feeling of being gutted to have only got a draw. two wins and a draw from our last 3 games - that's champions league form, or at least Europa.
We're gradually creating a bit of respect for those who wear the mighty Yellow, a sly comment of 'yeah, but where are you in the table?' when we were winning only helping to prove that point.
Also I had a quiet word with a talent scout I noticed hanging around the pitch and he said 'were you the bright yellow ones? Oh sorry, I wasn't watching that game. So, at least he didn't say we were rubbish.
