One show at 11am and again at 11:45am. "The Little Boy Who Wanted To Be Carried Along All The Time" is a poem written by F.Ruckert and adapted for use as a puppet play by Suse Konig. It's a sweet tale of a boy and the adventures he encounters and how nothing is quite right until he safe in his Mother's arms. For ages 12 months to 5 years old.

Catherine Gilbert Murdock is the author of the Dairy Queen trilogy, featuring the determined D.J. Schwenk, which comes to its conclusion in the brand new Front and Center. Catherine is local to the Philly area and is also the author of the fantasy Princess Ben. Delia Sherman is the author of Changeling, the story of Neef, the official mortal changeling of Central Park, and its recently released sequel The Magic Mirror of the Mermaid Queen. She is also co-editor of the "interstitial fiction" collections Interfictions and Interfictions 2 (due out November 3).

Time to sign up for your CSA!

If you’ve ever wanted to join a CSA (community supported agriculture), now is the time to get your applications in. The movement to get your food locally, to know the farmers who produced it and that no pesticides were used, and to be involved with a like-minded community is growing in popularity every year since Michael Pollan’s book,The Omnivore’s Dilemma came out in 2006 .

Local Harvest provides a service where you can type in a zip code and find out all the local farmers’ markets, food coops, CSAs, restaurants that serve seasonal cuisine and even farms you never knew were just around the corner where you can buy backyard-raised duck eggs. Farm to City is another website that provides links to the Philadelphia area CSAs and buying clubs.

In a CSA, a farmer offers shares to the public, paid for in advance, in return for a weekly selection of vegetables or fruits (northstarorchard.com is one) for the growing season, 20-25 weeks from May through November. There are also some CSAs that offer winter memberships.

A member of a buying club has the opportunity to place orders online and pays for that portion without purchasing a season’s worth of food. In either case, the food is picked up at designated drop-off locations throughout the city. You can split a share with another family depending on the size of the share and how many vegetables you think you can eat in a week.

We belong to Pennypack Farm’s CSA. It was the closest one we found where we could go to the farm itself to see the food being grown. We split the large share of 10 generous bunches of vegetables with another family and go to the farm the same day every week within a 5-hour time frame to pick it up. The large share costs $675 total and the small share of 6 units costs $450, with prices to be determined for next year.

They also grow their own broiler chickens, turkeys for Thanksgiving, and have laying hens whose eggs, along with other local products from buffalo burgers (yes local!) to hummus, are sold at their store. With every kind of vegetable imaginable and an A to Z farm stand cookbook for sale, we’ve tried kohlrabi and okra, tomatillos and garlic scapes. Pennypack also has weekly children’s programs and adult environmental education, including a meet-the-farmer series.

A newsletter is sent out weekly and there are invitations to potlucks, campfires, sleepovers and an annual harvest festival. One requirement is that each family contribute 4 hours of “share duty” per season, which can be anything from watering the herbs to weeding or planting seedlings. Present members are given first choice to sign on for next season and then it is opened to a waiting list. Just like with preschools, apply early!

This Weekend: Make a Run For It!

Have you ever wished there was a place where your kids could yell like crazy, jump around, shouting like maniacs, and nobody would even notice? Have you ever wished you could use all that wonderful kid energy, noise, and enthusiasm for a good cause?

How about taking the kids out to cheer for runners at one of Philadelphia's world class distance running events? Philadelphia is home to one of the fastest, flatest marathon courses in the country (making it a favorite of hopeful Boston qualifiers) as well as a premiere half marathon, the Philadelphia Distance Run (PDR). Both events are coming up-- this Sunday, September 20, is the PDR, and Sunday, November 22 is the Philly Marathon.

My son has been attending events like these for as long as he can remember, and, to this day, when we drive by the Fall's Bridge he still points out, "This is where mom's race was!" We have even planned trips to Florida around my brother's marathon and triathlon events. Most events are kid friendly, sometimes including separate "fun runs" or walks for kids as young as 3.

This year my son got to run through the finish line at the Philly Tri, wearing his first race bib (yes, I framed it!). If you ever get a chance, check out the Miami Man Triathlon, where the run takes place in and around the fabulous Miami Zoo (hello, sea turtle! hello, triathlon runner!). Plus, taking kids to these races highlights the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles in a really tangible way.

Among the highlights of these events: seeing world class athletes close up and for free (Ryan Hall is running the PDR this weekend, and if you have never seen a serious marathoner in action, you will not believe how fast these people are! Seriously, they look like they are in a full out sprint for 26.2 miles!); tons of noise, cheering, and happy people, so kids blend right in; and all that cheering really, truly, matters to the people running. In many cases it is the crowd that keeps them going.

And these days, more and more participants are running for a cause, such as Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training. This means a lot of these people are competing in their first event, and have raised hundreds, often thousands of dollars for charity while training. My whole family knows well that whenever we see someone in TNT's purple jerseys (or any other recognizable charity organization) we cheer like crazy ("Go TNT!" or "Way to go, TEAM!"). So all that shouting and yelling, which in your house might make you go nuts, literally supports these runners who have worked so hard, in so many ways, to be where they are.

So, the inside scoop for the Philly events is that from the Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, or Germantown neighborhoods, the best place to be is Fall's Bridge. For both the marathon and PDR you get to see runners go by with 3-4 tough miles to go (in the marathon you will see them go by twice, once as they head down into Manayunk and once on the way up Kelly Drive). Cheering here means a lot to the runners, and it is not too hard to park if you go over Wissahickon Ave. to Midvale, and park along East Falls. If you then head down towards the bridge, you have access to the bathrooms at the gas stations right there (you may need to buy a snack to use them) and there is even a Dunkin' Donuts in one of them, in case you or the kids need a quick re-charge (way better than Gu).

These races are Philly and its community at their best. The more crowd support, the better the field in years to come as the rep of the city is a big draw. And you will see people in crazy costumes, carrying all kinds of funny stuff, and wearing hilarious shirts ("Will run for beer" or "In my mind, I am a Kenyan"). The chances are also good you will see runners you know-- people you may not even have known were racing.

People will be smiling, laughing, struggling, and straining. And whether you see the leaders, the followers, or those in last place, there are few better examples I can think of as positive role models for our kids.

It’s a Zoo, Out There! (in Norristown): The Elmwood Park Zoo

I was amazed to find a zoo in the middle of nowhere (otherwise known as Norristown). Yes, I noticed the lack of some of the most popular animals – giraffes, elephants, and rhinos – but my kids didn’t. They were too busy studying the sleeping porcupine’s teeth, giggling as the red foxes chased each other in circles, and predicting which prairie dog would pop out of its hole next.

With very few animals behind glass, this small zoo felt much more open and natural than the Philadelphia Zoo. And, I know it’s hard to believe, but a day at the Elmwood Park Zoo with two young children was actually relaxing. Really. I learned more than I needed to about the blue-tongued skink during the reptile talk, but my son was in heaven. And without the large crowds we would usually encounter at a zoo, my daughter didn’t have to wait in line for her second pony ride (which meant I didn’t have to hear that high-pitched cry for very long).

The petting zoo was a like a trip to the farm, with animals housed in a quaint red barn. After petting sheep and goats, we discovered the beautiful black jaguar and watched Jamaican fruit bats nibbling on bananas. And I wish I could transport their playground to my neighborhood. There were intricate wooden play structures for little and not-so-little, ride-on animals, and even a “fossil dig” area with pebbles that kept my little one busy searching for dinosaur bones.

After a long day of animal gazing, I was thrilled to find out that the yummy-smelling hamburgers being grilled outside on the café’s deck were not for a private party, but for everyone!

Finally, a trip to the zoo that didn’t leave me feeling like I’d been run over by a herd of elephants! (And the prices didn’t crush my wallet either.)

Go Downtown: A Day of Franklin

Day of Franklin

A fun afternoon or early evening with the kids can be had by doing a mini-tour of places in the city bearing the name of Ben Franklin. This past Saturday evening, ready for a shake-up from the neighborhood playgrounds, we headed in town to meet friends at Franklin Square Park, the wonderful mecca of fun visible off 676 at the 6th street exit. Parking can be tough-- don't be tempted to park illegally on the sidewalk near the park, or risk a hefty $76 ticket (the reasoning "everyone else is doing it" bears no weight with the Parking Authority). But once parking has been found a world of fun activities awaits you.

We've been to this park before and played on the very large and enclosed playground, which has designated areas for tots and for slightly older kids. We've also done the beautiful merry-go-round, with which my son has a love-hate relationship. This night, the agenda included the park's cute and relatively easy mini-golf course ($6 for a child) where two 3 1/2 year old boys had a wildly successful first stab at mini-golf (if, like me, you measure success by a lack of tears, tantrums, and injuries).

We followed our golf game with dinner from Stephen Starr's "Square Burger". Starr has taken over the burger shack in the park, and while the menu is small (think hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers and fries) the items are well-chosen. The veggie burger had well-selected toppings and the meat eaters enjoyed their selections as well. The summer salad I had included green beans and corn, and the buttermilk ranch dressing was so good I found myself lapping up the extra with french fries when my salad was gone! We passed on the yummy looking treats (including, no joke, a butterscotch krimpet milkshake-- a whole new reason to love Starr) because our night included desert elsewhere.

After our dinner on one of the many large picnic tables and a visit to the very clean restrooms, we headed out of the park, past the giant sand-sculpture of the 2009 World Series Phillies, down 6th Street to Arch, and turned left, where we took in Ben Franklin's grave site at the back of Christ Church. Many visitors throw pennies on his grave, and last time we walked by an impersonator who was lecturing on the life of Ben. You can see all this from just outside the gate at 5th and Arch.

This was a mere pit stop on the way to our next destination-- Franklin Fountain, at 116 Market. A true old fashioned ice cream and soda shoppe. The soda jerks (I love getting to use that word properly) wear old-time costumes and the ice cream and fountain sodas are delicious. Perhaps a bit on the pricey side, but quite large. My son and I split a hot fudge sundae (homemade ice cream and fudge) and were filled to the brim. We happily walked back to the car and drove back home with happy memories of our day with Ben!

NB: We had one unplanned stop on the way to Franklin Fountain because when we walked by the pet store Doggie Style at 3rd and Market, we found that they had SPCA kittens living in a cat condo in the front window. The cats are all friendly and they let kids walk into the window display and play with the kitties. (By the skin of my teeth I got out of there without a new cat-- they are all up for adoption!). I guess, however, Franklin would prefer cats to dogs, since he is famed for reminding us that "He that lies down with dogs shall rise up with fleas."

Beatlemania in Chestnut Hill Tomorrow!

This weekend, Beatles fans should head to the hill (Chestnut Hill, that is) to join in the celebration to commemorate the release of the original Beatles catalogue, which includes all 12 Beatles albums digitally remastered and packaged with the oringinal artwork released with each album (released Sept. 9th). For those of you addicted to music-related video games, you might be interested to know that "The Beatles: Rock Band" game was released at the same time.

On Saturday 12th, let's come together for Beatlemania on the avenue.
Visit Hideaway Music to see WMGK’s Andre Gardner, host of Breakfast with the Beatles, and The WMGK Classic Rock Squad will also be there to share their favorite Beatles songs from 1-3 pm. Hideaway will also display rare Beatles collectibles.

Bring the kids for a day packed full of fun Beatles activities. Help them look for George in the Where’s George Contest? A George Harrison doll/figure will be placed in a window in one of Chestnut Hill’s shops. If you find him, you win a $25 Chestnut Hill gift certificate. Visit O'Doodle's toy store for “Yellow Submarine” Races – kid can race in the depths of the O’Doodle’s Ocean. O'Doodle's will also have free give-aways and Lucy in "Tie-Dyes" with Simon. Bring your own white t-shirt or buy one for the event for $10. Using the latest in String Dye Technology and the Simon Says game, you will learn how to get “groovy” with your own tie-dye shirt.

Make sure to do something for yourself too! Try some "Strawberry Fields" tea (20% off) at The Hill Tea Bar. If you get a moment away from the kids, visit the Diamond Spa for an "I Want to Hold Your Hand" manicure special, and relax while you listen to your favorite Beatles tunes.

If you like to rummage...

Don't miss St. Paul's annual rummage sale this Saturday, Sept. 12th, starting at 9:00 am. St. Paul's is a beautiful old stone church at the top of Chestnut Hill. When my family moved from Florida to Philly two years ago, we were coatless and clueless about cold weather. We happened to see a little blue and white sign advertising the church's rummage sale, so we thought we might as well stop by and see if they had some cold weather equipment.

And did we find all the coats, boots, scarves, hats, and gloves we could ask for? Yes. And way too much other stuff. We were there all day. I'm telling you, this is the king of rummage sales. Get there early. Prepare to wait in line to pay your $2 entry fee and allot hours to spend perusing through the rooms upon rooms of goodies.

The church volunteers actually spend all summer preparing for this sale. It is HUGE. It encompasses a couple of floors, many rooms, all full to the brim with stuff. And it is alarmingly well organized.

You will find books labeled by topics, a room of women's clothing, a room with men's clothing, a toy room, children's clothing, a room of antiques, electronics, and even a special "French" room with upscale clothing and accessory items for women. There will also be DVDs, Cd's, computer games, a holiday room, sporting goods, plants, jewelry, linens, furniture, and art.

You could find enough stuff to start a new household at this sale. Or get your Christmas shopping done early. And the prices are very low -- I'm talking yard sale prices. And a really nice bonus is knowing that your money is going to local charities whose missions it is to serve the homeless and hungry. Last year, the church raised $35,000 that was given to such organizations. And any leftovers from the sale are also given to worthy causes.

And in case you run out of arms to hold your bags of sales items, there is even a "bag room," where you can drop off your bags and get a ticket to bring back when you're ready to lug it all out to the car. There will also be plenty of food. Last year, we sat out on the beautiful lawn and ate hot dogs after the sale. It's a nice family afternoon. Although, if you can leave your kids at home or with a sitter, you will walk out with less unneeded toys (maybe).

And, I actually hesitate to share this information (I know, I'm a selfish, crazy rummage sale hog) there is a somewhat unadvertised "pre-party" on Friday night (the 11th) at 6:00 pm. I found out about this last year, so I stuck my husband with the kids and went with a friend. So, this early preview does cost more at the door ($10), but it is so worth it.

It was so packed with people shopping madly that I was surprised there was so much leftover for the sale on Saturday. Some rooms are supposed to also mark up the items 20% for the Friday sale, but they didn't end up doing this when I was there. And it really was kind of like a party. There was someone playing a piano, free wine, and tons of wonderful Hors D'Oeuvres and desserts. Just the food was worth the extra entry fee to me. (The only thing I love more than a good rummage sale is free food).

Parking at St. Paul's can sometimes be difficult, but this year rummage sale shoppers can park in the large lot across the street at Our Mother of Consolation (on Norwood Avenue). If you have any questions about the sale, you can reach the church office at 215.242.2055.

The 2009/2010 open houses for local schools are here! So, if your child will be attending Kindergarten beginning in 2010, and if you have not already made the big decision and want to check out schools, below are the dates you need to make note of on your calendars.

And this is the best time, also, to get a head start if your child is going to be entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2011. These open houses are one of the best ways to get to know a school and to get a feel for if a particular one is the right fit for your child. You will have the opportunity to tour the campuses and classrooms, speak with teachers, administrators, current parents and students, and even alumni. You will be able to ask your burning questions and discuss any concerns you have in a open format.

Reading statistics on websites and talking to friends is a good jumping-off point, but nothing compares to a personal visit to the schools you are considering. You will be surprised at how your opinion of a school may change after attending such an event.

Make sure to RSVP if you plan to attend an open house. There is sometimes limited space, so let the schools know early that you intend to come. You can find out who to contact by clicking on a school's link below.

Most of our local public and charter schools are not listed yet because the information was not available at this point. Please let us know if you hear of any unlisted open houses! Many do not have any dates on their websites yet.

Arboretum adventures

As usual, there are some great events and activities for kids at the Morris Arboretum right now, including a "bird's nest" for people (open now), a scarecrow design contest (register by Sep. 18; entries displayed Oct. 3-18) , and little lighthouses made from leaves, bark, vines and twigs (the garden railway's summer display).

Philly Spells Writing Center Presents "Write Your Own Fairy Tale!"

You may have heard of bestselling author Dave Eggers (What is the What, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) or you may have heard of his excellent writing center in the Mission district of San Francisco, 826 Valencia, that gets kids ages 6-18 excited about writing and helps teachers inspire their students in the literary arts.

The creativity and inspiration of both Eggers and 826 Valencia is heading to Philadelphia in the form of Philly Spells Writing Center, a wonderfully welcoming, unabashedly wacky world of self-expression. Their mission is to excite young people about all forms of writing through wacky and wonderful programs. They open their physical space in 2010 but offer free workshops throughout the year to the public, schools, and youth-based programs. They'll be working hard throughout the city to raise funds to open the center, but in the meantime Germantown Avenue parents can support the cause right in our own neighborhood!

Bamboo Photography- Unique School Portraits and More!

I'd like to welcome Bamboo Photography, Mt. Airy's newest business, a photography studio that captures the essence of community -- focusing on the spirit of children, the evolution of eco-consciousness, and the heart of local culture. Dana Scherer, owner of Bamboo Photography, has recently opened an office in the Green on Greene building on the corner of Greene Street and Carpenter Lane, which also houses the Environmental Homestore and the Moving Arts Studio of Mt. Airy.

Bamboo Photography will hold an open house on Saturday, June 13, 2009 from 11:00 am-3:00 pm, introducing their new location and offering children's activities, refreshments, and giveaways. The children's activities for the day include African storytelling by Yomi Awodesu at 12:30pm, a children's drum circle with Joe Tayoun at 1:15pm, and a special portrait session/door prizes giveaway at 2:45pm.

Scherer started Bamboo Photography with the actual image of bamboo in mind. "Bamboo is very sustainable, resilient, flexible, strong, and adaptable," she says, "much like the qualities of children.” She feels that working with children is a gift, a constant reminder of why we must strive and give the best of ourselves, and work to build communities where our children are embraced and given strong roots to grow.

Focusing her efforts in the local community, Scherer is redefining school photography, offering parents and schools a creative approach to this traditional service. “As a parent, I’ve been too often disappointed with the lack of choices and the quality of my own children’s school portraits, and I felt there was a definite need for something different.” Scherer says. “If I can create portraits that make parents smile, then I know I’m doing something right.” She does away with the studio backdrop all together, preferring the natural light and setting of the outdoors.

Aside from offering a high quality service and product, Scherer is also creating a business model based on sustainable and eco-conscious decisions. “If we are to consider our shared future, we have a responsibility to our children (and theirs) in making conservative and innovative choices about how we live and do business today.” Bamboo Photography represents a vision where the future of our children and our environment go hand in hand. Tennis

As the weather gets warmer and warmer I've been thinking about tennis-- a sport I used to do as a kid and absolutely loved. I never took lessons and never got very good at it but I adored taking up the racket and hitting the ball as hard as I could, and then trying different swings, imitating Andre Agassi as I played.

It got me thinking about tennis courts in this area, and on my walk to Germantown Pediatrics the other day I went past the Woodford Tennis Club, right on Wister Street in Germantown, tucked behind large trees with a beautiful, gigantic house in the front. I didn't get a chance to walk through and check out what it was all about but if this intrigues you like it intrigued me, I suggest looking at this website list of Philadelphia Tennis Courts where there are listings for an Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center and more in and around this area.

Let me know if you find any free tennis lessons for children or tennis camps. Heck, let me know if there are tennis groups for moms who are reminiscing about their past sporty selves too.

And of course, you can always just stop by Allen's Lane Playground and try and reserve a tennis court there. Happy swinging!

NOT Like Pulling Teeth: A Visit to Dr. Bresler's Cavity Busters

It was time to take Caroline to her routine six month dentist appointment. While some parents may have to drag their children kicking and screaming to the dentist, my kids actually look forward to going to Doc Bresler's Cavity Busters.

Upon entering the office, you realize this is no ordinary dentist office! The sound of little hands banging furiously on white video arcade buttons echos across the room. In the corner, kids stand on plastic steps stools play Ms. Pacman, Donkey Kong 3 and Q-Bert.

An ocean of Nemo characters greets patients in the waiting room. My favorite is Crush (the sea turtle) and his son, Squirt. Bruce the Shark is showing off his new braces, courtesy of Doc Bresler, no doubt.

There is no shrieking drill or small closet size dental room. Instead, patients enter a door with Mr.Incredible's son, Dashiell, karate-kicking on it. This door leads to a large room with red, yellow and blue dental chairs. The kids get to pick out a toothbrush and receive prizes for being brave. The kids even choose their own flavor fluoride treatment: mint, orange or vanilla.

Caroline appeared grinning from ear to ear to show me her pearlly-white smile. In her hands, she held her treasures: a plastic fluorescent yellow bracelet, a red thumb ring that glittered, a red toothbrush and sticker.

Now I know why they call Doc Bresler's "the kids' dentist." Kids love to visit!

Hansberry Garden and Nature Center Flea Market

Hansberry Garden and Nature Center is a beautiful community garden located on the corner of Wayne Avenue and Hansberry Street in the Germantown neighborhood. Its membership consists of wonderful neighbors with diverse backgrounds and gardening experience ranging from absolute beginners to experts.

They'll be holding their first Flea Market for the season on Saturday, May 9, 2009, from 10:00am-4:00pm, with a special plant sale for Mother's Day, an absolutely amazing selection of kids' books, adult fiction/non-fiction, and much more for prices as low as 25 cents, and an eccentric variety of flea market finds (toys, clothes, electronics, oddities) for great prices. There will also be a baked goods sale, a garden cafe selling refreshments, and an assortment of flea market vendors with tables packed with goodies.

This is so fun to take the kids to because the garden is such a family-friendly space- it's enclosed from traffic and has plenty of places for children to run around, toys to climb on, and plants to admire. I love taking my children for the morning, finding some great deals on children's picture books while they run around the garden plots. They get a special sweet treat made with love by one of the neighbors as we leave and everybody's happy.

Hansberry Garden will hold flea markets every second Saturday from May until September so if you miss this one be sure to check out next month's. This year they'll also be holding free gardening workshops from local garden enthusiasts during the flea markets, and possible kids' activities too. So come support local gardens and community with your family!

*Membership to the garden is only $15 a year (plus a small amount of work which can be joining a committee, attending meetings, and/or working a few hours in the garden) and members are given their very own plot to grow flowers or vegetables in this chemical-free community garden.

What is MALT?

Mt. Airy Learning Tree is a community-based "school" that draws on the human, geographical, and architectural resources of Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill. Students enroll for $5.oo per term and can participate in classes that range from swimming to computer basics to aromatherapy. Classes may run for 2 hours on an afternoon or for up to 8 weeks. The spring term is underway and continues through June.

Three reasons why MALT classes are a boon for GAPpers:

1. For those new to the area, courses can take them into private area gardens, local history can be learned, and other like-minded neighbors can make contact.

2. Classes are offered for children as young as three.

3. Participants can choose classes convenient to their schedules: nights, weeksdays, weekends, and registration can be done online!

I have taken several classes through MALT and will be starting another next week: Meditation for Beginners. What parent cannot benefit from a few minutes to him or herself?

This Weekend: Grand Opening of The Little Treehouse!

If you haven't been by the new location of The Little Treehouse, this weekend is the perfect chance to check it out. And it is well worth it! I was amazed at the amount of space and high ceilings. All of the toys from the previous location remain, but there are several, new fun additions as well. There is also a cafe with a great selection of food for children and adults and a nice, big seating area.

Searching for Spring: Book-Making with Kids

Last week, during one of those gorgeous 70 degree days, we decided to head out to a favorite park and spend the afternoon there. Being a shutterbug, I grabbed my pocket camera, some snacks for the kids, and sunscreen.

We started out in the usual spot.... playing on playground equipment. But the park we chose had gorgeous scenery all around, so we decided to hike for a bit and “look for spring”. My three year old and his twenty one month old sister were up for the challenge, and when my preschooler wanted me to take a picture of his first “find”, an idea was born.

I started snapping photos of every sign of spring they discovered... from the puddles on the ground, to the gorgeous spreading tree starting to green up. Once they knew their observations were being recorded, they were really motivated to find more. It sparked great conversations about what was and what wasn’t a sign of spring (we decided the many cars in the parking lot were a sign of spring, but trash on the ground might be a bit of a stretch).

If I had planned ahead, I’d have also brought along our trusty clipboard and some drawing/writing tools... my preschooler loves to be the scientist, recording what he sees. But we relied upon our photos and memories of the day, of which there were many. We saw dogs splashing in the creek, found a worm on the sliding board, chased after some butterflies, discovered flowers and seedlings, couldn’t shake our shadows, and even tracked fish in the fast-moving stream.

Once we returned home, we put the pictures to work; my preschooler and I set about creating the photo book. Since our pictures seemed publish-wort

hy, we opted for a photo book from an online shop. Many online photo printers now have book-making options... artscow, shutterfly, picaboo, and snapfish come to mind. These companies provide software and templates (just add photos and text) that make book-making a snap. Ours took about an hour total to complete.

We went through the pictures on the computer together, sorted them into categories, and then started telling our story. My three year old was more than happy to narrate the entire book himself, but we made sure to put some quotes from our toddler in as well.... my favorite being, “yook mommy, fwowa!” (Translation: Look Mommy, a flower!). Using their words and memories really made the book come to life.

We conducted our investigations at Valley Creek Park in Malvern because it is a lovely park and we had errands to run nearby, but this is a nice portable activity you can do just about anywhere. You could even repeat for all 4 seasons... publish your own family series! The only downfall has been a certain little boy requesting photo print-outs and homemade books about virtually everything he does, at which point I promptly introduced him to the additional wonders of the homemade book.

Celebrate Earth Day with Art This Weekend!

Caroline, my four-year-old daughter, sat working so intently on her memory book. She was carefully cutting out hearts from scrap book paper to create a textured front-cover. “Mommy, I love this pink pen,” she said as she held up a fluorescent glitter pen. Meanwhile, my six-year-old daughter, Sarah, studied a plastic model of a horse as she used a brown colored pencil to draw a picture of a “wild horse.” “I am going to make a storybook about wild horses,” she said, smiling.

We arrived late to Mindy Flexer's Studio, at 5225 Greene Street, but she didn’t mind. The kids around the table talked about their storybook. One little girl was making a storybook for her best friend, a story about all the things they love to do together. Later, Caroline walked slowly holding her book with two hands. “Mommy, I have to hold my book carefully, like this,” she said, as she skipped down the hallway.

I couldn’t wait to come back for more fun and creative activities for the family! Well, I don’t have to wait much longer...

Sendak on Sendak: Fun for All at the Rosenbach Museum

If you find yourself lamenting that the Please Touch Museum did away with their Sendak exhibit in their new digs, there’s another local spot to get your Sendak fix. Nestled in between the rowhomes and brownstones of Rittenhouse Square, the Rosenbach Museum is home to the largest collection of Maurice Sendak’s work.

Sendak, of course, is most famous for his monstrously illustrated picture book, Where the Wild Things Are. The Sendak exhibit at the Rosenbach (on display in this form through May 3rd) takes visitors well beyond that famous story. Our family attended with one adult and three children (ages 3, 5, and 9). And while it wasn’t necessarily geared towards the preschool crowd, the museum offered something for each of us.

There was a wonderful seek-and-find guide for families to follow. Kids can grab their very own Chicken Soup with Rice folders to house the cards they collect in each of the four Sendak galleries. The cards have wonderful information about the exhibits, interactive ideas and discussion points for caregivers and children, and beautiful cut-outs of some of Sendak’s most treasured characters (Really Rosie, Max, Bundibar, to name a few). Once home, the folder unfolds to create a set, and the cut-out characters have their very own stage! That was a nice take-home that my kids all really enjoyed.

During the self-guided tour/treasure hunt, questions and ideas help guide visitors. Parents and children are prompted through questions to connect with the illustrations. Topics included fears, friends, bullying, tantrums, dressing up, and everything in between. Our favorite explorations included looking for Jenny and the dog throughout the exhibits, counting monsters, and finding pictures “bathed in moonlight”. The guide provided information, as well as ways to keep busy children focused on the images. But all three of my children especially loved gathering the cards for their folder, and really used the cards as a way to relate to the displays.

The images themselves are stunning for any Sendak fan to see... from small sketches showing the drawing process, to original drawings of favorite pages, to wall-sized murals that made us feel truly a part of the stories. The exhibit is definitely multi-layered. It is very kid-friendly, but also highlights Sendaks’ struggle with life’s darker side. It pays an apt tribute to this author/illustrator/producer/set designer who refuses to believe that children are one-dimensional.

Before you leave, be sure to visit the wonderful gift shop. In addition to many Sendak books, dolls, cds, and prints, there are also signed copies of posters and books available for collectors and dabblers alike.

The museum is closed on Mondays. Tuesdays-Saturdays open from 10-5, with later hours Wednesday nights until 8pm.

Adult admission is $10, students and children are $5, and children under 5 are free.

"Hanami," you, and a picnic!

Are you relishing the idea of your first family picnic of the year? Why not plan a picnic with Japanese flair? Spring brings to Japan the fun tradition of hanami, or, literally, "flower-gazing." Families or coworkers plan elaborate picnics underneath blooming cherry trees and use the opportunity to sing some karaoke, eat sushi, and imbibe sake.

Philadelphia is home to a wonderful variety and amount of cherry trees that are currently in bloom, and the Japan America Society is hosting events in honor of Philadelphia's 2009 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia. Even if you can't take your children to any of the story times, demonstrations, or other events, the cherry trees are still beautiful and inviting - but not for long (they usually bloom only until mid-April)! GAPpers are fortunate to have a grove of these lovely trees at the intersection of Lincoln Drive and Wissahickon Avenue, at Rittenhousetowne.

The picture at the right displays another great spot for a cherry tree picnic -- under the grand cherry tree that resides behind the William Jeanes Memorial Library in Lafayette Hill. Visit one of their engaging story times if you have little ones and picnic outside afterwards.

If you admire the majestic magnolia trees even more than the cherries, visit Pastorius Park in Chestnut Hill and picnic surrounded by pink blooms. There is also a single, gorgeous magnolia at the edge of another good choice for a picnic: the grounds of the New Covenant Campus in Mt. Airy, across from the Trolley Car Diner.

There may not be any blooming trees, but you can also try a picnic under the pines at one of the tables in Fairmount Park by the Northwestern Stables, at the top of Chestnut Hill. The kids will love to watch the horses go by as you eat and there is plenty of room to run around. Hike up the trail to Forbidden Drive by the creek afterwards.

Happy Spring, everyone!

Now that the weather is finally condusive to playground visits (most days anyway), I thought I would put together a map of all of my favorite parks and playgrounds in the area. I'll add a link to our site soon also so that it's easily available if you feel the need to escape the house.

This is a google map, so you can do all kinds of fun things like zooming in and out and getting directions to a particular playground (by right-clicking).

Let me know if I left out any of your favorite parks by commenting below. I'll be happy to add them!

GAP Needs You!!

Well, we have reached 100 posts!! It's hard to believe this site was created just last September. We have grown and changed a lot in that time. For instance, we have launched our new meetup group! If you haven't joined yet, please do. We have 18 members so far and some fun activities planned. If you are concerned about paying the $5 dues, you are welcome to join and check it out for a while before paying. I only request that payment to cover the money I have spent on Meetup membership. I think it is well worth it. I keep discovering new features of Meetup; it's a great tool.

I hear from GAP fans constantly as I am out and about and it is always so nice to hear how much parents appreciate the site. I always hoped for a resource such as this, so I'm glad I was able to provide it for our area's parents.

Unfortunately, if I don't get a lot of good extra hands soon, GAP may disappear. I started off with a couple of consistent writers, but lost them due to other commitments, which I completely understand. I am so grateful to Angela, who is wonderful at keeping the calendar updated. If it wasn't for her, there would probably be no events listed. And Maria is a great contributing writer, along with a couple others who write occassionally.

But, I am still doing the bulk of the work myself and my kids are at an age right now that prevents me from being able to sit down at the computer AT ALL when they are around and not asleep.

So, if you don't want to lose GAP, please, please consider volunteering some of your time. No, it's not paid, but it's fun and your work will always be here to reference for people. I have found that working on a site such as this often leads to other opportunities that you wouldn't expect. It's well worth it.

You don't have to be a writer to help out. Here are just a few ways you could help:

Write posts, of course (for those writers out there)

Edit others' writing

Take pictures for posts

Be in charge of the weekly garage sale lists (which we haven't done in a while)

Respond to emails sent to us through the site

Be an event organizer for our Meetup group

Help with advertising

Talk to local businesses about advertising on the site

Compile lists of information (classes in the area, etc.)

These are just a few of the ways you could help. It doesn't have to take a lot of time and you don't have to have any special skills. I know we are all busy parents (believe me, I know), but we have to work together now if we want to keep this great resource around!

This Weekend: A Fun Family Craft Day

Looking for something fun to do this Saturday? Come to the Mindy Flexer Studio School, 5225 Greene Street on March 14, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Workshop is free for Weavers Way Members; the cost is $10 for non-members. Join us in creating Japanese-style accordion books! This is the perfect opportunity to chronicle a family story or vacation! Help your little artist paint, draw or collage their own imaginary story. Come prepared with photos, drawings, and other mementos.

Also, mark your calendars for a Mother's Day Make-In on Saturday, April 25, 9:30 to 5:30 or April 26, 1:30 to 5:30. Come as a family or your children (over 6) can drop in for a couple hours to surprise mom with a special gift! Children under six are welcome with an adult. Light Refreshments will be served. The cost is $20 for families or $10 individuals; the fee covers all the materials you can use to create your own prints, cards, small books or stationary. In addition, blank tote bags, cloth lunch bags, wallets, and aprons will be available for $10 each if you would like to decorate.
