He was the chairman of a networking group called Business Connections in 2007 and 2008 and led efforts to organize the annual Business Expo to promote businesses in the region. The moneys will pay for the design and construction of a 32-bed juvenile justice facility. Employing approximately 22 people with five long-term employees working as many as twelve to twenty years, LaQuinta goes above and beyond for their guests. <br /><br />General manager Bonnie Eng who began working in 1980 when the first 28 rooms were in construction recants several stories of how her employees go the extra mile for their guests.<br /><br />“We had an employee working one night when an elderly couple arrived without a reservation. We were full. The only hotel available was at Schweitzer. The couple was nervous they would not find it as it was late at night. Our employee gave them refreshments in the lobby and told them if they could wait until she was off shift, she would drive and show them the way. When her shift ended at 11 p.m., they followed her to Schweitzer.”<br /><br />Eng recalled another story where a guest complained the iron in the room caused a rust stain on her blouse. The guest wanted the employee to have it dry cleaned before she checked out. After calling the local laundry, the employee learned it was not possible to have it done before the guest checked out.<br /><br />“She took it upon herself to buy the guest the same exact blouse after she was off shift that day. She put it in the guest’s room with a note of apology and explanation, along with the soiled blouse. Obviously, our guest was surprised and delighted,” Eng said.<br /><br />LaQuinta is a prime example of strong customer service and provides a wealth of amenities. Voted the best hotel in Sandpoint by the local community, LaQuinta Inn provides free breakfast, room service from Connie’s Café, and free high-speed internet access at a location within walking-distance to the downtown corridor of Sandpoint. Many of the entertainers for the annual Festival at Sandpoint stay at LaQuinta, and they are then photographed for their wall of fame. <br /><br />Eng is active within the Greater Sandpoint Recreation and Tourism Council. In his role as class president of LS, he and his fellow classmates raised over $2000 by coordinating a yard sale for the DayBreak Center, a nonprofit organization providing family support through dementia therapy; and in his role as chairman of the agriculture and forestry committee, he is responsible for the annual Farm Tour, an event that draws people outside our area to learn about farming and forestry in Bonner County. Additionally, he serves on the chamber’s board of directors. <br /><br />The Chamber would like to thank Doug for his tireless efforts to make our community strong and healthy through his active participation and leadership.<br /><br />“He represents why I love calling this community home. Thus, the LS class agreed to build a secured garden area by organizing a yard sale wherein all moneys raised would build an access ramp and garden for clients to plant flowers and hopefully have their own garden.<br /><br />“The success of the event was mainly due to the entire class working together,” said Lynch. “I loved being part of this event, because our class came together, worked hard, laughed too much, and raised over two thousand dollars for the DayBreak Center.”<br /><br />The LS class especially would like to thank Taylor-Parker Motor Company for allowing them to utilize their location in Ponderay. “We could not have had the success if it weren’t for Brett Taylor and his family,” Lynch said.<br /><br />The Leadership Sandpoint Class is a two-year program available to leaders and potential leaders in the Greater Sandpoint area. Leadership Sandpoint provides a behind the scenes look into various facets of this community, hands-on leadership experience, opportunities to build relationships with leaders, and incredible insight on the issues that are shaping the future growth of this area. <br /><br />“The class of 2009 will be graduating on August 26th at Enchanted Events,” said the Chamber’s executive director Amy Little. “We are pleased with the work they accomplished as a team and are excited to see another great year as the 2010 class paves the way for next year,” she said. <br /><br />Applications are now available and will be accepted until July 31st, 2009. CCS became known as “Heather’s House” after founder Gibson passed away after an eight year battle with cancer in 2006. Located at 1215 Michigan Street Suite B, CCS provides financial support and services to those needing help during their cancer treatments. From President of Leadership Sandpoint to Vice President of Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC), Judy Thompson holds a variety of roles that shape and influence the greater Sandpoint area. <br /><br />On May 14th, Thompson was honored by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce as Volunteer of the Month for going above and beyond for multiple organizations and the community at large.<br /><br />“Her strong leadership skills and work ethic are legendary in this community,” said long-time friend and neighbor Tawnie Sleep. “I’m not sure there is a person in this room that hasn’t worked on an event with Judy and knows that her passion for detail is untouchable,” she said when honoring Thompson on behalf of the Chamber at the Power Luncheon on May 14th. “She inspires me and so many more to go above and beyond the call of duty.”<br /><br />Executive director of POAC Kim Queen echoed the same compliments. “Her energy and enthusiasm, paired with her leadership abilities and tenacity, ensure that anything she sets out to do gets done right.” Queen continued, “She is an inspiration to all who have had the honor to work (and play) by her side.”<br /><br />Thompson has supported the arts and the business community in the greater Sandpoint area through her active involvement. Gretchen A. Hellar, Mayor of Sandpoint, proclaimed the week Small Business Week of Sandpoint and calls upon citizens to join in saluting small business men and women. <br /><br />“During good economic times, we can forget the importance of strong business leadership; but in tough economic times, we look for and seek those leaders to weather through the storm and create jobs and prosperity,” said Amy Little, executive director of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. “On behalf of the Chamber’s board of directors, we are pleased to recognize the tireless efforts and sacrifices made by our business owners.”<br /><br />As part of the festivities small business owner Michelle Anderson will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration on Wednesday, May 20th at her new business, Pend Oreille Health Care, located at 710 Superior Street, Ste. B. Food and refreshments will be served, and the general public is invited to attend. <br /><br />Additionally, the Chamber will continue to run the Economic and Recovery Workshop series available to the general public at no cost. On Tuesday, May 19th they will host Personal Financial Planning for Displaced Employees presented by Williams & Parsons at the Idaho Department of Labor, located at 2101 W. Pine Street, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. On May 21st Williams & Parsons presents Nonprofit Taxation & the Law from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Luther Park at Sandpoint, located at 501 Olive Avenue. <br /><br />Hundreds of small business owners in Sandpoint exemplify the freedoms enjoyed as Americans – the freedom to produce, to create wealth, to earn and save and invest, and to make opportunities for others, stated the proclamation. The entrepreneurs remind citizens the importance of economic freedom and contributions small business owners make to the economy and entire way of life. She received the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award, a Take Pride in Idaho Award presented annually honoring an individual who goes above and beyond their responsibilities to make a significant contribution for developing, managing, or conserving Idaho’s recreation resources.<br />Tawnie Sleep exemplified these qualities through her efforts to preserve the annual Winter Carnival event this past winter.<br />“When the announcement went out that there would be no Winter Carnival this year, Tawnie rode the upwelling of disappointment and helped turn that emotion into one of the most positive and memorable Winter Carnivals of recent years,” said Pend d’Oreille Winery owner Stephen Meyer. “She inspired the entire Winter Carnival committee to pitch in and create events that would be sure crowd-pleasers,” he said.<br /><br />In addition to the Winter Carnival, Tawnie is an active member of the chamber’s Recreation & Tourism Council serving the Visit Sandpoint members of the organization. Recently she and her husband were awarded Tourism Partner of the Year at the 2008 Chamber Choice Awards. Through her involvement with the council, she consistently provides complimentary lodging to promote our business community. <br /><br />She exemplifies a team spirit by partnering and helping other businesses, noted Chamber officials. “She encourages her guests to visit the many outstanding restaurants, retail stores and outdoor activities this area has to offer,” said chamber executive director Amy Little. “When her lodging facilities are full, she will go the extra mile and find places for guests to stay elsewhere in the community,” she continued.
