Ever tried to work with other people and get things done? Ever wondered how it could work better?

Formal Consensus is a simple structure that any group can use to make decisions efficiently and effectively. Learn how to use it to draw out the best possible decisions that harness the diverse creativity and talents of any group. Formal Consensus is an important tool for building sustainable communities, deep democracy and participatory governance.

Formal Consensus emerged as a way of quickly making good decisions among a group of hundreds of loosely affiliated individuals. Formal Consensus has been successfully adopted by forward thinking businesses, intentional communities, and the global activist group Food Not Bombs. Nathaniel White trained with the author of the Formal Consensus manual, C.T. Butler, in 1997. He uses the method in his paid and voluntary work, and contributed to the most recent version of the manual.

How to Transition our City to a Sustainable Future

A much-needed workshop looking at collaboration between all parties involved in making our city more sustainable will take place on Saturday 18th July, starting 10AM, at the Community Base conference room. Community Base is at 113 Queens Road, and the conference room is on the 5th floor.

This cross-sector workshop aims to bring voluntary, public and private sector colleagues together to develop effective methods of collaboration and a joint strategy which ensures the most effective outcome for Brighton & Hove residents.

The workshop will:

1. Provide a space for cross-sector partners to understand each others' strategies and priorities, and explore opportunities for partnership and collaboration

2. Share the latest research and information on how organizations can work together

3. Support nonprofit organisations in developing skills and knowledge to organize effectively their resources

4. Launch strategies and a joint action plan for how partners can respond positively to the challenges of climate change, fossil fuel depletion, and other sustainability issues together

The workshop is hosted by Transition Brighton & Hove. It will be a highly participative event and is designed so that partners from all sectors go away better equipped to make a coordinated response to any sustainability issues. There will be 50 places available at the workshop, which are free and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. If you can only assist to part of the workshop, please tell us. Postponed > Transition South East Gathering in Brighton

Many thanks for all the interest in the South East Transition Gathering. We regret that we have had to postpone the event next Saturday.

We will be working toward holding it in Brighton in October, when hopefully we can generate some more buzz.

Please do sign up to the South East Transition Initiatives (SETI) site, to keep up with future events...it is the only way at the moment for us all to be connected.

Although we received some advance bookings, a bunch of intentions to come, quite a few 'maybes', and a handful of heroes stepped forward to help underwrite the event, we felt that the numbers were not sufficient to continue (and expose anyone to the risks of not meeting costs).

It was ambitious to bring this together so soon, and although we sincerely feel a strong need for this type of event, and sooner rather than later, we also recognise that it is summertime and short notice.

With gratitude for all those who committed to this, and to everyone for all the good work being done. See you in October? And for the Transition B&H 2nd Birthday celebrations on 25 July?

there'll be a slack space social at coachwerks, 7 - 9pm, on monday 22 june - a 4,000 sq ft disused/ dead bus depot recently converted into a creative, collaborative, experimental and beautiful project space in brighton.

the format is an unhosted project space, where:-

(1) you bring along any project you'd like to put into any unused, empty, missing building in brighton

(2) for the night, coachwerks is this space to be used.
to work on your project.
to network / find collaborators.
to get help on your project.

We are having a vegetarian Jamiaican barbecue courtesy of Akushla the Great Chef at Falmer Bar, and Baba Slips (probably the best band in Brighton) will be livening it up with their best tunes. All live on Brighton's coolest radio station Phonic 88.8fm!

If you're a passenger, this is our way of saying thanks very much for your custom... if you're a friend but as yet a Lemon virgin, this is our way of saying we value your friendship and hope to get to know you better soon... and if you're a neighbour this is our way of saying thanks for putting up with us driving past your house every half hour, and we hope you don't mind us driving past every 20 minutes in the autumn!

The party is free :) but we will ask for a donation for food, and we will be shaking a bucket at some point to raise some money for some more plants and compost to make the garden even more beautiful!

We have waited a long time to launch this new introduction. This is especially for anyone who has come across the Transition Towns movement recently, or those who have been around the fringes for a while....or those who have been somewhat involved but really feel they should get more of a grip on what this thing is really about....and those who have never heard of this Transition thing, but their mate said they should come along and check this thing out.

This is where you find out why there's a Transition storyline in the Archers, why The Transition Handbook was MPs 5th favourite read during last summer's holidays, and why this has gone from a small town in Devon to an international phenomenon in 30 countries in just 4 years.

It is for anyone who is concerned about Climate Change, what's going to happen the next time oil prices go through the roof or markets crash, who would like to see a more sustainable, healthier city. Or who wants to replace pessimism or despair with fun, action and community.

Brighton Naked Bike Ride 2009

Join us for a naked lunch, a seaside bike ride in the buff, a paddle in the sea and a naturist beach picnic!

Brighton's fourth World Naked Bike Ride will take place on Sunday 14 June 2009. An amazing 400 riders took part in 2008, 180 in 2007, 160 in 2006, and more are expected in 2009. As of the 2007 ride, following negotiations with Sussex Police, full nudity is permitted at the event.

Brighton Cohousing vision workshop

Creating a vision: what, where, who and why. The first step in creating a cohousing project and developing a business plan for carrying it out. If you would like to be involved in this exciting venture, bring your ideas and your flexibility and let's start! It is a good time to be doing it. Developers are giving up land, loans are available for co-operative housing, housing authorities are keen to encourage affordable housing - and there is a lot of interest amongst people who would like to live in a sustainable community.

Transition BH is pleased to announce a one day workshop run by Rob Gourdie, a PM Professional member of the Project Management Institute, a Prince2 practitioner, the preferred methodology of the UK public sector.

This is being provided at a very affordable rate to support anyone involved in projects within Transition B&H, or imagine they might like to be, other Transition initiatives elsewhere, and also intended as support from Transition B&H to anyone involved with projects related to building more sustainable communities...or imagine they might like to be. It is likely to result in successful action and warm fuzzy feelings when looking back at the satisfying work you did.

It will be a collaborative learning exercise covering the topics of scoping, time management, costs, quality, human resources, communication, risk, procurement, using our own examples of projects we are involved with or that we might be fantasising about.

National Liftshare Day - Tues 9th June

End of the Line - FIlm Showing at Duke of Yorks

The End of the Line is the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of over-fishing on our oceans. Filmed over two years, we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food. The
film examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by
increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting
in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a
future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation.
