Community Dialogue for Change (CDC) - Invites you to the Continuing Dance of Dialogue - a Facilitated Process. This is the last in this series of 4 on the theme ‘From Isolation to Community’ – (and related social /political issues of isolation, injustice, violence and our shared community) - All welcome. In all 3 forums we’ve had deep conversations, some bringing momentary connection and understanding, some reaching an edge that requires more attention. We grapple with how do we speak about tough social issues that affect us personally and the world around us? How do we take care of ourselves and others in a passionate process? How to support all voices and challenge societal injustices? How we can listen to each other and ourselves, holding the space for a deeper understanding?

Real commitment to working together,whether in the rough or the smooth to find ways through has been a hallmark of past forums. We will continue to facilitate to support and deepen the process of dialogue in the next forum and will also offer time for us to explore ways we might come together to integrate some of these processes in our lives.

Money is a dominating force in all of our lives, whether we have lots of it or very little, yet the vast majority of us have no real grasp of how it is created and by whom. This is perhaps unfortunate, as our ignorance seems to be maintaining a system that is undemocratic, ensures the continued destruction of our natural environment and resources, and keeps us all entrenched in a form of slavery. It’s also completely unsustainable.

Money as Debt is a 45 minute cartoon which explains in very simple terms what money is, it’s detrimental effect to our wellbeing, and outlines more happy alternatives.

Transition Allotment Work Day Sat 7 Nov 12noon

Transition Brighton & Hove have an allotment on Whitehawk Hill next to the Whitehawk Community Food Project. This site needs a lot of clearing but is a great space to get involved with especially if you are new to growing. The more of us that get involved the more productive we can make it and if we can get it cleared by the spring the results will be amazing.

Previously workdays on the Transition Plot have been 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month but since these are being scarcely attended we think the 1st Saturday of each month is a better way forward for the time being.

Simon Powell will be leading an introduction day on Saturday 7th November at 12 noon in order to go over the works that need to be done over the coming weeks / months. Please come along to kickstart this site into action.

Brighton Quakers Sustainable Living Group has arranged a showing of The Age of Stupid at the Friends Meeting House, Ship Street on Friday November 6th at 7.30pm.

Caroline Lucas MEP will be speaking and answering questions after the film and we will also be showing the short animated film Wake Up, Freak Out - Then Get A Grip (wakeupfreakout.org). The evening is a fund raiser for the sustainable water projects of Jordan Valley Water Aid (part of Brighton-Tubas Friendship and Solidarity Group), with suggested donations of £3 payable on the door.

TBH AGM + Birthday party Sat 24 Oct

Our Transition Brighton and Hove (TBH) Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be on Sat 24 October 2009 West Hill Hall, Compton Avenue (off Dyke Rd), Seven Dials, Brighton BN1 3PS 2.30pm - 6.30pm, followed by a party 7.00pm - later... hurrah!

All are very welcome to the AGM and to the party, regardless of how involved you have been with TBH until now, and you views are sought on the future of TBH (see below)

We have some key decisions to make about our future, including electing people to new roles in the 'Enabling Group', amendments to our constitution, agreeing new groundrules, brainstorming proposals for spending our recent grant, setting goals and milestones for the coming year.

It will also be an opportunity to celebrate what we've done so far, get to know each other better, welcome recent members, share some food, and to hear from the Transition Network about how things are going on beyond Brighton & Hove.

Introduction to Formal Consensus Facilitation, October 24th 2009

Do you want to...
...help your group make decisions?
...turn creative differences into an advantage?
...eliminate political struggle?
...give everyone a voice?
...get time-efficient decisions that make sense?

Formal Consensus is a system that a group can use to make decisions. It offers a quick way to get the best creative decision a group can invent. It does not require unanimous agreement, and it turns conflict into a resource. It was developed for use by large groups that do not know each other well, but need to work together. Formal Consensus is used by businesses, intentional communities and activist groups on several continents.

By the end of the day, participants will know the basic steps of the Formal Consensus process, have a chance to practice using the method, and have extensive discussion of real-life examples. Your questions about your own organisation(s) will be welcome.

Nathaniel White trained with the author of the Formal Consensus manual, C.T. Butler, in 1997. He uses the method in his paid and voluntary work, and contributed to the most recent version of the manual. Nathaniel says, "Formal Consensus is the best decision-making system I've found for drawing out the creative intelligence of a group. It also happens to allow its participants to empower themselves, to increase the value of diverse group perspectives, to draw out (rather than suppress) unconscious information, and to create shared ownership of decisions (and thus more commitment to effective execution) among the full group. Although I have seen very skilled consensus decision-making in groups that do not use Formal Consensus, many of those groups can't easily pass on what they do because they have skills -- not a system." This class is charged on a sliding scale, from £5 up. The suggested price for the fully employed is £40.

Wed 21 Oct - Food Security: why we need a plan - Patrick Holden talk

Transition Brighton & Hove in partnership with Brighton and Hove Food Partnership host a talk and discussion by Patrick Holden, Director of the Soil Association UK 'Food Security - why we need a plan'

Addressing food security issues is one of the key tasks for Transition Initiatives around the world. Climate change, population increases, changing dietary habits of developing countries, soil degradation, over-fishing, peak oil and geopolitical struggles are all factors that are ringing alarm bells for the food conscious amongst us.

In August the The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published a report on food security putting some of these issues into the UK political spotlight. BBC2 did an excellent programme on it for 3 consecutive weeks: 'Future of Food'. On 21 Sept Jonathan Porritt gave an excellent overview of the issues at the launch of BHFP's Harvest programme. Against this backdrop the latest Transition Talk will put the case for 'Food Security - why we need a plan'

Patrick Holden has been director of the Soil Association since 1995. He has been involved in the organic movement for 30 years, initially as a full time organic farmer and for the last 15 years working firstly for British Organic Farmers and then for the Soil Association. He has a 93 hectare mixed organic farm in west Wales. He was awarded the CBE in 2005 for services to organic farming.

This is sure to be an illuminating talk by one of the country's most knowledgeable food experts and an accomplished public speaker.

This event is especially for anyone who has come across the Transition Towns movement recently, or who feels they should get a bit deeper into what it's all about....and those who have never heard of this Transition thingy, but are somewhat intrigued.

This is where you find out why there's a Transition storyline in the Archers, why The Transition Handbook was MPs 5th favourite read during last summer's holidays, and why this has gone from a small town in Devon to an international phenomenon in 30 countries in just 4 years. It is for anyone who is concerned about Climate Change, what's going to happen the next time oil prices go through the roof or markets crash, who would like to see a more sustainable, healthier city. For anyone interested to know what happens when permaculture, the psychology of change, The Natural Step, addiction therapy, and community action start to mingle. Or who wants to replace pessimism or despair with fun, action and community.

Brighton Media Centre are very proud of their role played in supporting the Transition Towns movement locally, including providing office and meeting space as an information point and small library focussed on sustainable work, money, finance and business. Sat 17th Oct - Eco Energy Fair

The Eco Energy Fair was held in Hove Town Hall last Saturday 17th October. Organized by the Transition Energy Group, approximately 200 people came to visit an exhibition of 26 companies and organizations committed to help with energy savings, renewable energy and reducing carbon footprint.

We had a wide range of local organizations and companies, including:

Brighton & Hove Council, with the Home Energy Efficiency, Energy Efficiency in Schools and Sustainability Team departments represented.
Well-known nonprofit organizations active in providing information and advice on climate change, energy savings and renewable energy (BPEC, RSPB)
OVESCO, the energy services company founded by Transition Lewes
Several installers of solar energy (Southern Solar, Suntrader, Eco Hi Solar, Aquarius Solar Heating, Eco Save Technologies)
Several green architects and consultants for eco refurbishment of homes (BBM Sustainable Design, Bright Green Homes, Arch-Angels Architects, Maria Hawton-Mead)
Green transport companies and organizations (Sustrans, The Big Lemon, Smart, Bike for Life)
And even green plumbers! (Blue2Green Plumbing)

The list above is by no means exhaustive.

The Eco Energy Fair was opened by Sarah Lewes, award-winning environmental journalist. She reminded visitors of the 10:10 challenge and proposed that everybody write on a small piece of paper one need and one offer they could make, with the purpose of seeing if they could be matched up. Afterwards, we made a few good matches, like helping somebody find a good quote for a solar thermal installation.

During the day we had several talks:

Ian McKay, sustainable architect, talked about a carbon descent plan for the built environment and how we can use buildings to support a more environmentally benign way of living in our city
Maria Hawton-Mead, sustainable building consultant, talked on the principles of good eco-home renovations with examples.
Dave Spear, installer of solar panels, talked about integrated solar thermal & photovoltaic and long-term seasonal thermal storage

Visitors listen to Ian McKay

Feedback from visitors and stallholders alike was very positive. 88% of visitors agreed that they had learned more about energy efficiency and renewable energy from their visit. A few examples of the actions they said they would take as a result of the visit were:

Do lots of low cost energy solutions at home
Fit free lightbulbs
Talk to the Council about solar panels in Council accomodation
Stay in touch with local companies
Join Transition Brighton & Hove

All in all, it was a wonderful day and visitors, stallholders and volunteers alike went home very happy!

COPENHAGEN 2009 CLIMATE SUMMIT INFO NIGHT

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. The film documents the success story of how Cubans transitioned their society from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens.

Sarah Lewis will be officially opening the Eco Energy Fair

The Eco Energy Fair will be opened by Sarah Lewis, an award-winning environmental journalist and editor. She launched eco-ethical freesheet Rocks, set up the weekly environment section in The Argus, launched the Argus Eco-Awards and produced the 2009 Brighton and Hove Green Pages ethical directory. She was the 2007 London and South Environmental Journalist of the Year and has written for publications such as The Ecologist and The Guardian.

The Transition Brighton & Hove Energy Group is hosting an Eco Energy Fair on 17 October at the Hove Town Hall. The event will help the people of Brighton and Hove to be better informed about how they can manage their energy requirements more efficiently. The exhibition will be open from 11am – 4pm and there is a programme of short talks and information sessions, which are free to visitors. Entry fee is £3.

This is the current state of affairs with the Eco Energy Fair.

Contacting suitable stallholders: About 90 stallholders contacted, 23stalls accepted, 9 rejected, rest pending.
Contact with local Council: Three Council officers have expressed interest. The Council will have two stalls, one for Home Energy Efficiency and another from the Sustainability Team and Energy Efficiency in Schools.
Publicity: We have a marketing plan. Posters and postcard flyers have been printed. Started putting up posters and distributing flyers. We have a website at www.ecoenergyfairbrighton.org.uk . Started sending tweets on TBH Twitter and messages on Facebook. Email campaign started. Contact with the press started, including The Argus and commuter papers. Two radio interviews done, another pending. A professional photographer has offered to help with photos. Harmony in the Community are advising us on publicity.
Finance: Second version of budget has been written. A grant has been written and we're waiting to see if it's approved. It was agreed on the forum that insurance will come from core funding money.
Logistics: Hove Town Hall booked for 17th October. We have half a dozen volunteers to man the Transition stall/ticket collection, we would prefer if more were available. A general request for volunteers has been sent. The Health Group will help with health and safety issues. We are looking at our catering options. We have printed tickets available.
Presentations: We have four offers for speakers and another pending. Identified some videos suitable to show. Currently looking at extracting sections of long documentaries to use as short videos. Sarah Lewis will be officially opening the event.
