Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Iron Maiden)

You can find this song, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", in the latest album of Iron Maiden "Flight 666". This work is a compilation of 17 of their most successful songs. It's a live album and recorded in 16 different cities in 11 countries around the world. Published this 9 of June.

If you haven't seen them live I recommended it, because it's a great experience. It's incredible how this band sounds, and their show...

Without a doubt Maiden are masters of masters.

My Article In Yareah Magazine. June 2009

As you know, I usually write in Yareah Magazine, a publication of mythology, literature and art. This month the magazine is dedicated to Vampirism.

You will be able to read articles about Bram Stoker, Gilles de Rais, Dracula and many more.

The artists of this month are Vangelis Fitsios and Polly Jackson.

My article has been about Elizabeth Báthory also known as "The Blood Countess". This article is a resume on her life. A life full of crimes and the most horrible cruelty of a serial killer.
Elizabeth inspired Bram Stoker to write his novel Dracula and could be inspiration for many horror writers.

The worst of writing about this woman and getting information about her is to discover a very dark era in Europe, where someone only for being an aristocrat could torture their servants and go unpunished.

Elizabeth wasn't arrested for killing common people. She was arrested because in her last crimes, she convinced some aristocratic families to send their daughters to her castle. A kind of college for aristocratic ladies. But these girls never returned to their homes.

Elisabeth Báthory used teenagers for sex and for drinking their blood, she thought that blood of virgin girls could rejuvenate her.

When she was arrested, it was discovered that a maid had her hip broken of a thrashing, but that was legal!!! But much more was discovered. A kind of jail with girls captured to take their blood from time to time. And hundreds of corpses.

Cats are one of the favorite pets all over the world. They are fun, very clever, and adorable.

But did you know that....?

The oldest cat in the world lived for 36 years.
And the heaviest one weighted 23 Kg.
A cub of cat that is born with blue eyes may change of eye color some months later.
Cats can smell with their nose but also (like snakes) with the so called Jacobson's Organ, that is inside the mouth, just behind the front teeth, and connects to the nasal cavity.
Cats sleep between 16 and 19 hours of every 24.
They can vocalize up to 100 different sounds.
A cat can jump up to 7 times their height.
When a cat rubs their head against an object or person, it is showing that it is theirs.
When a cat is upside-down, this is a sign of security and affection.
Cats relax from stress scratching a vertical object. This movement activates their circulation and invigorates their body.
Cats hiss to protect themselves and show that they are dangerous, the same as some snakes.
Cats obey women more easily because they perceive better high-pitched sounds.
Cats love kneading with their paws everything that they like. This is something that they learn when they are cubs because with this movement they get more milk from their mother.

Cats appeared on Earth before dogs.
In the ancient Egypt, when a woman was very beautiful, she was called "cat". Women, to look more pretty, painted lines in their eyes imitating the look of cats. This custom has arrived till our days.

Cats can't detect sweet tastes.
They have 32 muscles in their ears so they can direct them to the source of the sound.
A cat from Texas named Dusty had more than 420 kittens and had her last litter when she was 18.
Chocolate, coffee, and aspirin are some of the substances that are poisonous for cats.
In Asia, black cats are symbol of good luck.

The artists of this month are Francis Piep and Andrew McIntyre.

My article has been about the Spanish writer Rosalia de Castro. A woman with a very sad life and very talented, who felt rejected by the society of her time. She was a daughter of an unmarried woman and a priest in a time in which it was a big scandal, and all her sons died before her. She died with 48 with a very bad health, troubles, and the dead of her most loved persons.

His true name was Andrew Warhola.

He had serious health problems when he was a child, and passed most of his childhood in bed, where he learn to draw. He also liked to cut photos of celebrities of his time.

He always felt a big love for his mother. She even collaborated from time to time in some of his works.
He was window dresser for some time. This influenced his career because this made him get in contact with fashion and advertising.
He had more than 200 wigs. In his search for feeling satisfied with his own image, he underwent plastic surgery.
He worked for the most influential fashion magazine (Glamour, Vogue....).
He was one of the greatest advertising illustrators of the world. His images for Campbell or Coca-Cola became icons of fashion and design.

He made portraits of the most important artist of his time: Marilyn, Elvis, Elizabeth Taylor... His admiration for them made him enter in the world of cinema.
He directed projects of theatre, music and photography.

Bizarre Aquatic Animals

Axolotl
This amphibian lives in the lakes and rivers of Mexico. It is in danger of extinction. It can be kept in an aquarium, and it's convenient to try to breed them to protect the specie.

Holothuroidea
Known as sea cucumbers, it belongs to the same genre than sea urchins and starfishes. This being has existed since 400 million years ago.

Phycodurus eques
Also known as sea dragon. It is related to the seahorse, and is found on Australia. Its body looks like covered by leaves to hide from its predators.

Psychrolutes microporos
Lives in New Zealand and Australia, at 1,000 meters under the sea. Its flesh is gelatinous, and lacks of muscles. It eats everything that floats near it.

Footballfish
Females reach 2 feet long, but males are not bigger than 1.5 inches. It lives in the mesopelagic zone (from 200 to 1000 meters under the sea) of tropical and subtropical waters.
It has some kind of lantern in the forehead. Other fishes are attracted by that, and then it eats them.

Mola mola
Reaches 1,400 kg of weight and 3 meters long. Its name comes from the Latin "mola", that means millstone. It uses to swim with its dorsal fin over the sea, so it is often mistaken for a shark. Sometimes it swims on a side, and waits the seagulls so they eat the parasites of his body.

Fangtooth fish
It can live up to 16,400 feet down the sea. This fish has the largest teeth of any fish in the ocean, proportionate to its body size, that is 6 inches long.

Grimpoteuthis
It is an octopus that lives from 3000 to 4000 meters under the sea. They are also known as "Dumbo octopuses" from the ear-like fins in the top of their head.

Argyropelecus affinis
This fish lives in deep waters but where light still reaches, so it has very big and well developed eyes.

Physophora hydrostatica
This is a gelatinous animal that lives in colonies. It is 8 to 12 cm long. It's able to regulate its density by changing the amount of gas in its float, to swim up and down. It moves at a speed of 1 feet per minute.

I knew of this story through YouTube. It was a story that moved me, and it was a surprise to see this book.

The book is a new edition of another that appeared on 1971. Due to the big success of the YouTube video, it has been published again, and has been updated with more than 50 new photographs.

The book tells the story of Christian, a lion that was sold as a pet but his owners decided that he was born to be free. So they took him to Africa. One year later, they traveled to Africa to visit their lion, and their reunion was really moving. Here you are the video:

Author: Stephenie Meyer.

The famous American writer Stephenie Meyer (author of Twilight Series, New Moon and Eclipse) , has written this novel: The Host.

The Host has become a best seller quickly. The book is about a mix of science-fi and a love story. The extraterrestrials dominated the Earth and Wanderer invaded a human body. She begins to feel emotions, hunger, fears, love... And begins a fight between the soul of the body that she has taken and herself.
