My own visit to El Salvador (sometimes misspelt El Slavador or El Salavador) was a delightful experience. The contrast between those who are wealthier and those who are not is never far away in developing countries. What was different about El Salvador (El Slavador or El Salavador), was the attitude of the less financially endowed.

Poorer people often have to vend to earn a living and vendors can be unobligingly persistent in their pursuit of sales. Not so, the Salvadorans. Dignity, cheerfulness and innovation are more their trademark. What a people to embrace! What ingredients in their history have wrought such grace? How often do you find these attributes? What other nation has such treasure within?

Then there is the beauty of the land itself. Go inland from the 200 miles of coastline and you sweep upwards towards the 25 volcanoes that range along its inland borders. Only 6 of these have been active over the past 150 years, and then seldom drastically so. They do provide however, dramatic vistas when you climb up some of them, and an equally dramatic return to ground level in the case of the volcano Izalco. It's steep sides are invariably negotiated by a slide down to the bottom.

Geographically El Salvador opens its doors to lots of warm days and sunshine, shutting them on the cold draughts of winter climates endured elsewhere. Add to this warm rain in due season and you have a jewel of a country.

Tourism is not a highly developed industry in El Salvador (El Slavador or El Salavador), yet opportunities for tourists abound. There are 14 lakes to choose from on which to go boating. Try the crater lake at Coatepeque or Lake Suchitlan. The Rio Sumpral enters and exits L. Suchitlan - a tranquil river allowing you to daydream gently as you paddle its course. Flocks of birds fly up from their perches on the banks encasing the river as you go by. The river quietly clears its throat only when a fallen log temporarily divides its course, imperceptibly causing it to cough and splutter on the surface.

Other rivers, like the Rio Lempa give a more adventurous ride. This one runs through the Eastern parts of El Salvador (El Slavador or El Salavador), down to the coast.

Then there is the coastline itself. Jiquilisco Bay kayaking trips allow one to enter the deep mangrove swams of San Dionisco's Island. Mangrove swamps, with their theatrical separated roots rising up out of the water like dried up broomsticks of long ago, are often found at the point where the rivers enter the sea.

Parts of the coastline challenge the skills of many surfers, kayakers and canoeists, while other areas are better suited to beginners. All along the coastline one can find places to stay. Some are more developed than others - resorts especially set up for the 'greenback' tourist industry, but for those who want to just experience El Salvador (El Slavador or El Salavador), smaller, less conspicous, equally enchanting places exist right on the beach front. The La Libertad stretch of coastline, less than an hour's drive from San Salvador, is a good place to start.

Especially now with so many cruise deals and cruises are filling up there is less need to be accommodating. Yes, cruise lines want you to have fun but they are tightening their belts when it comes to the freebies. Play by their rules, though, and they are more than happy to reward you with a free cabin.

Now on to how to actually get a cabin for free. The best way is to put together a group of 15 passengers or more and the ship will gladly give you your cabin for free. Where will you find these other people? Try organizing a family reunion, call up your friends or organize your high school reunion shipside. The Violet City Lantern Tour at Mammoth Cave

I have always wanted to visit Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. I finally made the trip this past summer and it exceeded my expectations. There are actually many different tours available that vary in length and difficulty. From the visitor center, tours leave every hour or so, either on foot or by bus to the many cave entrances.

I enjoyed my New Entrance Tour so much the first day that I decided to stay overnight at the Mammoth Cave Hotel, and go on the Violet City Lantern Tour the next morning. That tour leaves on foot as the entrance is near the visitor center. Before walking to the entrance the rangers distribute coal-oil lanterns to every third person since that is the only light used. There are actually electric lights in this section of the cave, but for the most part, they are turned off and lanterns are the only source of light. Your eyes get quite used to the light level and it is an amazing effect going through as the early explorers did. The trail is mostly wide and flat (though there is some up and down), so it is not dangerous or frightening.

The park ranger guide for our tour added a very special touch by getting into character for the different phases of the tour. He acted out the part of different people of the different time periods in history. He was great and has actually appeared on TV for this.

This tour is about three miles, and three hours long. The amazing thing about this particular section of the cave is how large the tunnel is, and how level the rock strata are in places. At the first part there is an introduction to the historical War of 1812 activity of mining saltpeter (potassium nitrate) for making gunpowder and preserving meat. Deeper in is the section where Dr. John Croghan set up a tuberculosis sanatorium in 1842. It was thought that the dry air and constant temperature of the cave would cure the illness. To think how people lived down there for months without seeing daylight and exposed to the smoke of cooking and heating fires was a sobering thought.

Our guide also told of how at one point some entrepreneurs got the idea of opening a hotel inside a section of the cave, but thought better of it when they came up with the name, Mammoth Cave Inn. I'll let you decide if that's true, or not.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and plan to go back and take some different tours. Although no children under age 6 are allowed on the Violet City Lantern Tour, there are many other tours suitable for children. It is an extremely popular family location and kids love it, as you might imagine.

5. Santorini, Greece: This island is actually a live volcano, but it isn't expected to belch again in our lifetime. The volcanic yield has resulted in black sand beaches and soil that grows some of the best wine grapes in existence. Because of the volcanic soil Santorini also grows some of the sweetest tomatoes in the world. You must sample the fried tomato balls (Keftadas).

You may never see a more awe-inspiring site as when you gaze from the rim of the volcano and watch tiny boats cross the royal blue waters. If you can tear yourself away from that, you must visit the nearby town of Oia, with its stunning sunsets. Two terrific restaurants to visit are the Saltsa and the Nyhteri. Perhaps you can find lodging among the villages overlooking the submerged volcano. And two hotels that can be recommended are the Villa Kalimera and the Volcano View Villas.

6. The Caves Resort, Negril, Jamaica: The resort sits atop honeycomb, limestone cliffs overlooking the sea. 8. Long Island, Bahamas: We're not pushing Long Island alone. It is just an example of the Bahamian islands that are still beautiful, serene, and unspoiled by raucous crowds and unabashed commercialism. A massive spine of ancient reef gives the 80-mile island two faces: the sheer cliffs and caves of the east coast and the soft, sandy, mangrove-lined lee side which washes into the Bahamas Bank. Long Island does have numerous shallow and deep scuba diving sites. But it is best known for Dean's Blue Hole, a vast abyss that tunnels down about 600 feet.

Travel writers grow bored and jaded after seeing hundreds of beautiful island sites. Eleuthera, an out-island of The Bahamas, is not for everyone. If you're seeking nightlife, casinos, attractions, malls and more, then Eleuthera is not for you. However, if you simply want to relax on a secluded pink sand beach and enjoy the sound of the ocean and the search for sells, then Eleuthera fits the bill.

Accommodations

Finding accommodations on the island of Eleuthera can be an adventure on its own. Places to stay range from modern (but small) hotels and quaint inns to renting self-catering homes or cottages. Prices range from several hundreds of dollars to under one hundred dollars per night. There are choices to fit almost every budget.

Car Rental

Even though Eleuthera has a very small population, it is a fairly large, long and narrow island. The island is approximately 100 miles long but only 2 miles wide at its widest point. So, having access to transportation is vital if you want to get around and visit any of the beaches or got to restaurants and other local attractions. Renting a car on Eleuthera will be a different experience than most people are used to. There aren't any national car rental companies. You'll be renting directly from a Bahamian business person. It was also during this time period that Castro began to cut times with the United States and form an alliance with the Soviet Union. Although Castro denied being a communist, he had effectively transformed Cuba into a communist country.

Postcards From Europe

While on a recent flight I was able to sit back, relax and read a book from my favorite travel writer - Rick Steves. I have been using his great knowledge and experience on 8 European trips in the last 9 years - his hints and hotel recommendations have been wonderful and we read his books many times prior to departure and while on the trips - some vendors even give discounts by just showing the book.

Even funnier is seeing other travelers with the same book and chatting with them over what was fun and can't miss locations. His current book Postcards is different, very different, rather than making recommendations Rick is very thoughtful and reflective in his travels (most we have been to as well). For example, Rick talk about his experiences over the years whereby Europe and some locations specifically - Rothenburg - have went from a wonderful medieval town to something more akin to Disneyland. His thoughts on Munich were right on and even his discussion on high tide and low tide in Venice is not what one would expect.

He also was caught between finding new locations and getting offers of freebies but as a writer he wants to be objective and also not creative the next big thing.

So while I enjoyed his travel books and guidance this was a different side of Rick and it was informative and a better look into what makes him such an icon in the travel world.

We will be going to Europe again in 2010 and will follow his advice with confidence.

Traveling with young kids can be a great experience---or it can be a nightmare if you don't prepare and plan ahead! Whether you are planning on a long airplane ride or a long car ride, pre-planning goes a long way in keeping the children entertained and quiet.

Prepare Snacks

Children get hungry on long trips, and if you pack your own snacks, you can be sure the food is healthy, and avoid making unplanned stops along the way. Pack snacks that take a significant amount of time to eat, like trail mix or cereal, this will keep children occupied and make time seem like it is passing much faster. For the sake of your sanity and your car's interior, avoid messy snacks, or snacks that need to be eaten with a fork or spoon. . Bring something to drink as well because dry foods will inevitably bring thirst. If you partially freeze juice boxes or water bottles before you leave, you will be able to provide cold drinks without making additional stops.

Bring DVDs and Books
