EUROSPRING 2008: Pre-Trip Workshop (INTL 2200) 2 credits

This purpose of this workshop is to prepare you for the life-changing journey you are about to take. We will be approaching everything from an interdisciplinary perspective. You will be presented with information and have opportunities for discussion about the following:

*The history, geography, literature, cultures, languages, and current events of Western Europe

*Group dynamics and your skills as team members

*Skills for documenting your experiences in a meaningful way

*John Hale, The Civilisation of Europe in the Renaissance (Fontana p/back; ISBN 00686 175 X).

*Louise Mengelkoch and Andrea Kroll, ed., The Journey That Matters, Vol. III, 2007. (Available at the BSU bookstore or at a reduced price from your instructor.) You also have the option of buying one of the other two editions.

THE JOURNEY THAT MATTERS GUIDELINES

WRITERS’ GUIDELINES
For The Journey That Matters, 4th Edition

*Include complete contact information in the body of the essay, including e-mail addresses, phone number, mailing address, alternate phone numbers and addresses, etc. If your contact information changes before publication, please let me know.

*Length: 1000-2000 words.

*Include two relevant photos with complete cutlines written in sentences and identifying everyone by first and last name in the photo. The cutline should clearly explain what we’re seeing in the photo. Drawings, etc. are also good.

*Include a brief updated bio that will be current by ____________.

*Utilize quotes and/or dialogue.

*Include ample first-hand observation and description and other kinds of research.

*Use informal attribution style (in the tradition of magazine writing).

*Use first-person style ("I") or some style that is not academic writing, but not too informal.

*Include a title and a sub-title, both of which should be sentences (subject & verb)

*Please proofread carefully and use SpellCheck.

*If you need examples, please refer to The Journey That Matters. Find out what works and what doesn’t and steal what techniques you can. I will also put a copy on reserve in the library. You might also check out any edition of Best American Travel Writing, which is published annually by Houghton Mifflin. This is available in almost any bookstore.

*Have fun! Remember, this will be the best present you can give your friends, family (and maybe your enemies!).

In fact, you probably don't want to carry it with you to Oxford, since it's quite thick. Post your report to this blog.

What did the reviewers have to say that you found most interesting? Please cite your sources completely, so we can all find them if we wish. And remember, just citing a Web address is not a citation. That's like giving us the address of the New York Times when you quote from an article instead of telling us the name of the publication.
